Welcome to Episode 367 of the Chasing Daylight Podcast! This week, we are joined by a special guest, Jacob Safar, the creator and developer of Grassy.
If you've ever wanted a dedicated platform just to nerd out about golf courses, Grassy is exactly what you've been looking for. Jacob breaks down how he built this iOS-exclusive social platform to help golfers track their travels, rank their favorite courses, and build their ultimate bucket lists.
In this episode, we cover:
- What is Grassy? Think of it like a restaurant review app or "Letterboxd," but specifically curated for golfers to share course photos and reviews.
- The Origin Story: Jacob explains how he developed the first version of the app in less than three weeks out of a coffee shop.
- App Features vs. On-Course Tracking: We discuss why Grassy focuses on the off-course social and discovery experience rather than competing with live GPS trackers like 18Birdies.
- Future Updates: We brainstorm some new features live on the show, from adding a Chasing Daylight group ranking page to a "Pokedex" for golf courses and AI caddy recommendations.
- Massive Giveaway: Jacob shares details on the current Grassy app giveaway, including a Callaway Quantum Max driver and over $500 in PGA Superstore and Grassy gift cards!

If you're watching on YouTube right now, thank you for that. Make sure you hit that like button. Likes are free, they don't cost a damn thing. Make sure you do that for us. Jeremy is missing. He'll be here shortly. He got stuck out at Perump. So he'll be back on here in a few. But we have Jacob Safar from Grassy. And I'm pretty sure there's quite a few of you right now going, What the hell is Grassy?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
MattJacob, how are you doing tonight, man?
SPEAKER_01I'm fantastic. I'm doing great. I'm stuck with that podcast.
What Grassy Is And Why It Exists
MattYeah, we this is this happened like over the last couple days. Uh I am one who frequents golf apps. I love golf apps. I love seeing them. I love checking them out. And more often than not, I see one, I check it out, and I never see it again because it lacks a lot of things. So I was on TikTok because I've had a lot of couch time lately with the knee surgery. And I I saw an ad for a Grassy. I'm like, what the heck's grassy? So I go check it out. And I was impressed. So much, in fact, I sent the link to the guys and I said, You need to go check this out. This is worth checking out. I think this guy's onto something. So, Jacob, please tell everybody what Grassy is and why they need to go download it right now.
SPEAKER_01First of all, I really appreciate that intro. Like that, that makes that that touches my heart. It feels really good to hear that. Um But yeah, what Grassy is, is it's a social platform for you to share all the places that you've played with your friends and rank all the courses that you played. So basically curating your own collection of of your all your travels and everything and sharing that with the overall grassy community. Um yeah, it's it's pretty straightforward application. It's it's very much like uh the apps that exist for restaurants like Belly um or or Letterbox for movies, but you go in there, you rate golf courses, and uh you see what other people rate courses and trying to curate that community right now and and uh all that other stuff that goes along with building applications, but but yeah.
MattSo what made you decide okay, this hasn't been done right? I'm gonna do it right. What what was the turning point? Because Jeremy, welcome to the show, Jeremy. Uh, when when I sent the link to Jeremy and he checked it out, he goes, I don't know I'll have to bring up the message, but he's like, I'm crying right now because I've been wanting to do this for so long, and he nailed it.
JoeI actually have talked about it before. Yeah, oh no way, yeah, seriously.
SPEAKER_00And we and it started because of the podcast rankings, and then I was chatting with uh Mike from Beautiful Golf Courses about it, and he's like, This is awesome, man. You could expand it, do like the top 100 or whatever. And then I and Matt sent the message over. I'm like, yeah, this is completely this is completely different than what I was thinking. This is like it's every point. So I was excited to see it.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. Yeah. Um, yeah, it's it's it's been kind of it's been a kind of crazy ride. Um, you'd be surprised, or maybe not surprised, um, given your own experience, but surprised at how many people after launching the app, I launched it in August. Um, how many people DM'd me, whether it was on social media or on LinkedIn, being like, I had the same idea. Like, you know, like I'm like cool, like that's sick. Yeah, I it wasn't like intentional or anything. Like um, it was really I I wanted to build the app for myself, built it out. I was like, there's not really anything that exists quite like it yet. Um, so I just made it in about four weeks of programming and launched it, and you know, luckily it's been having a little bit of love from the community, which has been really nice to see.
Building The MVP And Community Response
MattSo, how long how long did it take you to from I'd say pen to paper to you know logging in for the first time?
SPEAKER_01Uh to the V1 of the app, it was probably less than three weeks. Um yeah. That's like one it's one of like especially with all the AI uh coding applications out there. It's really it's really easy to bring MVPs to market. Um so yeah, it was I was sitting in a coffee shop and I was just I was dealing with a bunch of other stuff, um, you know, building out other projects that weren't really catching anything. Um and I was just thinking about what I what I'd want and you know that I've been really, you know, enjoying all the golf I've was playing at that time. And I was like, oh, you know, F it. I'll just I'll just build it. It doesn't exist and we'll see what happens. And yeah.
JoeSo how's the real quick for everybody that's here? There is a giveaway that is live on the app. Is that still live, Jacob? Okay, so giving away at quantum.
Giveaways, Growth Loops, And Daily Check-Ins
SPEAKER_01Yes, is it is live. So we I oh I ran a poll um a couple weeks ago uh for the community to vote on what which driver we're gonna give away, and the quantum max was the number one. Um and so I went to the PJ Superstore yesterday and bought that thing. And uh yeah, that the giveaway is now live. You can go and enroll, um, completely free to enroll on it. Um it rewards you for you know using the app daily. I'm not sure if you guys have seen that yet, but you know, the higher your your daily check-ins are, the the more entries you'll get. Um, you know, right now I'm focusing a lot on growing the application so you can get entries by referring your friends, um, etc. But yeah, it's it's uh it's we had we gave away a lab DF3 about you know two months ago. And that was a crazy, that was a crazy experience, you know. It's similar to the how how the app started from you know, just an idea and just throwing it out there. The giveaway kind of started the same way with the lab. I was like, I'll just do a giveaway and see if it works. So then did that a few months ago and making some YouTube videos and some TikTok videos for it, um, caught a little bit of attention, you know, 30,000, 10,000 views. Um and it just kind of started to roll into itself. And I had no expectations for it when we did that first giveaway. Um, it had, you know, I was like maybe, maybe 15, 20 people will join it. Um, but you know, by the end of it, I think over 100 people joined. Um, a user out of San Diego ended up winning it. Um it had a bug with the win at the final last second. When if you ever watch the video on my page, you can see like the giveaway page crashes. I'm like, oh my god, because it's all live too.
JoeUm, but you know, that's just a quantum too. 500 plus in PJ Superstore and Grassy gift cards. So there's a lot of what not people in here. So you guys know what to do. You share it and uh share with everybody, and you could you could win.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, yeah, gonna break my bank off this one. So you'll be fine.
MattThere's different levels. You do have some uh uh options to pay for services. So break down because there's the free version, and then you break down the different levels and what the advantages are for being a part of that side of it.
Free vs Pro Features And Smart Recommendations
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, so 99% of the app is free to use. It's you go, you can rank courses, create your collection. Kind of, I think one of the coolest things is seeing your course maps, you can see all the places around the world that you've played. Yeah, very cool. Um, and uh, so you know, I I've got to figure out a way for this to somehow support and paste some support, some support myself. So I was you know just thinking about different ideas to um you know add even more value um that I can make as pro features. Um and so I built out an ML map algorithm that takes in all of the courses that you rated and you know the scores that you give in it. It looks at the courses elevation, it looks at your score, it looks at your friends' ratings, it looks at whether it's close to bodies of water, um, all this different data points on these courses that you've rated, and then it will recommend courses for you. Um, so that's kind of the main thing that the Pro Feature is doing right now. Um, you can get two X entries on Raffles too, which is a nice feature. Um But the main thing that I'm trying to build out is building out, you know, better ways for you to discover new courses, new gems around you that you would actually love. Um and and just kind of rolling with that.
MattNice. Okay. Questions for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
MattWhy only five photos?
SPEAKER_01Why only five photos? Oh, that was uh that's a that's uh that's that's uh only a product of me that being one of the things that I built five three months ago and haven't updated now. Haven't updated and and no one's asked me to increase that photo count until right now. So okay. There we go. That's that's already that'll be added to the to-do list.
Product Feedback: Photos, Memory Maps, Offline Posting
MattI take a lot of photos from courses, especially if it's one I've never played. Uh so uh I filtering through my photos, I like I did updated or I rated uh Banditrails, my favorite golf course on the planet. And I'm like, yeah, how can I pick five photos? There's you know, I have 36 that I want to share. And I know it's a you know server issue, probably you don't want to have too much on there.
SPEAKER_01Um no, um more the photos, the better. I just didn't know that I you know, I just for me I take maybe one or two photos, but that's good to know, you know. I the thing with with the application is it I don't know what people want unless they tell me directly, or if I go on and reach out and and uh ask for it. Um, and luckily people have been bugging me about it, and so this is one of those cases where I'm like, okay, add it to the to-do list, increase the photo count because you know it makes sense. Yeah, you're you're out there taking as many photos as you can because you're possibly on a one-time life or you know, few time life experience where you're on these amazing courses um with amazing landscapes. So that's good to know.
MattOne thing that I've really enjoyed is a lot of times when you have a golf app, you have to participate in the app while you're playing. And yeah, like uh 18 birdies. I'm I'm a loyal supporter of 18 birdies because I've been using it forever, and that's how I do my score entries. And you know, I have over 400 played on there, and I don't want to get rid of that, so I'm still yeah, but they also have a photo share feature, but to do that, you have to be playing around, you have to be at the course, you have to upload it while you're there, and it's just and it never really took off. What I like about this is I'm sitting on the couch, and you know, I'll bring up my like last night, bring up my band and trails cat uh album, and I'm just sitting there and I'm like, Oh, let's you know, type something fun about it. So it's a nice way to you know have some memories and go back and and talk about a place that you love, and then you get to rate it and the rankings. It's it's I mean, you're doing a fantastic job.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, thank you. Appreciate it.
JoeYeah, one of those things is you can just nerd out, like it's like my Instagram is basically all golf, right? So, like I left my personal, you know what I mean? So I left my personal, I haven't logged in in what four or five years or something like that. I'll pop in again and I'm out right back out to the hit and greens account and just because it's all golf, it's curated for what I want to see. Um, and it's like you can go there and maybe you're just scrolling through and you see some dude in Indiana playing somewhere, and like, oh, that looks sick. And then you can nerd out and and research, and you're like, hey, we tag all your buddies or whatever, and then just be like, hey, we gotta get out there, you know what I mean?
Not Competing With GPS Apps, Focusing Off-Course
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. Yeah, definitely. But yeah, but to touch on both your guys' points, like um, to start with you, Matt, right? When you talked about 18 birdies, um I thought I people a lot asked me, like, are you gonna do um anything like 18 birdies? And I'm like, that's completely a different scope of what we're trying to achieve here. Yeah, like this is not this is not a like your live golf tracking GPS app, you know, 18 birdies is already killing the game and people love it. You know, that's not something that we're even trying or thinking of stepping into. We want to focus on what you're doing off the course and you know, sharing that experience with your friends, um, discovering new courses, you know, all the all the above. Um, and then Joe, right? Like um I feel like social media in general, whether it's TikTok talk or YouTube or Instagram or YouTube, like there's so much going on in the world, and you know, and so much, you know, I I think I could end it there. I'm just gonna stop it there. Right.
MattUm that you don't want to like you don't care about care about hearing, care about seeing, like you just want to go and look at some cool golf courses and like yeah, and that's one thing that drives me crazy about Instagram is yeah, you're sitting there and you get inundated with this just nonsense, but then something hits you, and you're like, oh, and then like 30 minutes later, I got an Amazon delivery for an ad that I saw because it was trying to nerd out on golf.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's it's crazy. Exactly. And uh these big companies are always trying to manipulate you, and you know, I think there's you know, with Grassy, I think it's a it's could be one of the starts of these like micro medias where you're just on this one platform where you're only looking to get you know golf content.
SPEAKER_05That's all I want.
JoeYeah, it's a microcosm of yeah, you know, the niche that you're doing, which I like exactly. I guess there's there's a lot of golf nerds out there. There's a lot of golf.
SPEAKER_05There's a lot of us, there's a lot of us.
SPEAKER_01Definitely intimidated coming on this podcast, seeing how much you guys have like have been able to talk about, you know, from courses to all the above. I'm like, all right, you know, hopefully I can it's one of the best things though, man.
JoeIt's like you're you're you're helping capture the moment. Like for me, uh you know, we love we love experiencing new golf courses and like capturing the moment and and doing it for the moment because you know, we can't do it all the time. So when we can, we we we try and enjoy it, and it's like kind of bringing it back and putting it on paper, if you will. Um, yeah, yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_01I I guess like to kind of ask you guys it's just a question, like I know you guys kind of touched on a little bit, but uh what what kind of was that like click for you guys with Grassy? Like, where was it where you're like, okay, I want to use this and want to keep using it?
Wishlist: Group Pages, Shared Rankings, Trip Planning
MattFor me, it was it was a couple things. It was being able to rank the course, you know, and then and seeing your list of your ranked courses. Um, but then the the bucket list was sick because interesting all the time, all the time in our group chat for us here on the podcast, Dan or Jeremy or Joe will we'll send a link going, check this place out, it's sick. And then we look at it like, oh man, that's sick, you know, and we'll follow the course. But you know, two months later, try to remember what that was.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
MattYou know, and especially if it's not like like well, rodeo that you know, rodeo dunes is really predominant right now. You know, that's on your forefront, but that little course that we found in Indiana that was sick that none of us are gonna remember three months from now. I'm not gonna forget it now because now it's on my bucket list.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Yeah, well, when you rank the ranking part too, I what I really like is is uh how how you map it out. So not only not only can you you know get some good intel on on how these courses are ranked, but also it can help you like plan a boys' trip because you can look at the cities and go see how these people have posted about all these dope courses that are around, you know, uh Indiana, for instance, or whatever, you know, like you can use that information to plan you know a sick golf trip. And I think for me, because I'm I'm a I'm a big golf trip geek right now, but uh for me, that's that's that was the the hook for me.
SPEAKER_01Oh, cool. Yeah, and uh I I hope to implement a feature soon, and you know, I mean there's AI everywhere, but like I think it'd be really cool to implement a feature where you can just chat to like a caddy AI and grassy and be like based off of all the like my ratings and stuff, like where should I golf this weekend, or where if I want to go on a trip to you know Southern California, um what what top courses based off of my preferences should I be going to? Um so hopefully we can see something like that soon, you know, and help help the whole trip planning stuff.
MattYeah, that would be amazing. Yeah, I I I have an idea I want to run by you to see, yeah, because this is right after because I saw the groups, right? Yeah, that was a new a new thing I added. I'm still waiting for Joe and Jeremy to be on there so I can create.
JoeDid you create Henderson? No, I thought I I think I just joined um Henderson group. Henderson.
MattSo this is what I want to know if is possible, and you can tell me since you're the developer, and you can let me know. And this is something I would totally pay for if we could do this. So uh, because Joe has Joe has a completely different viewpoint on golf courses than me. Same with Dan and Joe. We we all have different opinions, but there are some things that we really see that we like, you know. Um, I uh so this is what I was brainstorming. If yeah two of us or three of us rank a course, uh, then it goes to a CDP page that in Grassy that says this is what Chasing Daylight thought about this, you know, boom, boom, boom. So that way we can, you know, kind of work with you guys and uh say like like when we we go to band in. So you can go on there and you can go to the chasing daylight page and see what all four guys thought of the band courses that they played.
SPEAKER_01Um does that make sense? Like you like, like there would be like the chasing daylight check for each course. Is that what you're saying?
MattYeah, but it it wouldn't like the course wouldn't show up until at least two or three of us have rated it on on the CDP page that people could view.
Data Challenges: Course Info, Booking Links, USGA Source
JoeWhat he's getting at is is that we do a yearly ranking, right? But it's localized to Las Vegas. So if we could do it like globally or global, hopefully global at one point when we get the funds, uh to where we can you know have like uh you know uh an earth view of our rankings is what he's saying.
SPEAKER_01Oh okay. So let me try to see if I I understand. And we can do this off air too, so don't yeah, you don't have to get too nitty-gritty, but but if I can kind of condense what you're saying, um like instead of having your own profile page, you'll have your own profile page, but there would be a chasing daylight page that once you know X number of you rate one course, it shows up as a chasing daylight rating. Yes, exactly. Ranking, ranking, yeah. Is that what you're saying? Like is that kind of yeah, yep. No, that sounds that sounds better than I guess. That sounds sick. That sounds sick.
JoeUm, most people don't play golf by themselves, right? And we try to play with each other as much as we can and we go on trips. And like if you had your four boys or eight boys and you were in a group, you know what I mean?
MattYeah, you know, we went to we went to Arizona and played a couple privates last year. We went to Nebraska. Well, Dan didn't come with us, but we're going back. Playing privates, yeah, playing private. Um, you know, we go to uh California all the time, we go to Bandon, you know, we and we've played a bunch of different courses that you know aren't on the mainstream that I think it would be awesome. You know, hey, this is what the CDP guys thought of this. And you don't have to go, oh, let me go find Jeremy's page, oh let me go find Matt's page. What did he think? You could just go to that one.
SPEAKER_01Oh, like it wouldn't even have to come like combine the scores into one score. You're just saying to show up, like you guys own this page and it's all your all your guys' ratings there.
MattYeah, but it's the the course wouldn't show up until we have you know more than one person.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I get it. We're on the same page, okay. No, I love that idea. Um and let and that could the funny thing is like anything. Is is fair game. Like that could like I can with whatever is like being pushed the most by the community, is what I'm gonna develop. And I think that's a great idea, right? Um I mean I've I developed the whole thing myself, right? And I I mean the whole thing is me, and then my girlfriend Jessie may be seen on some of our TikToks. Um, and you know, my family members helping me out here and there. Um, but uh in terms of what what gets made, it's like all right, what do people want? Let's and then like let's make it right, hopefully get it out as soon as possible. So um, like a feature like that, something that I didn't like I wouldn't even know that people would want. And obviously it makes a lot of sense, and it sounds like a sick feature.
Closed Courses, Labels, And Community Edits
JoeLike, obviously, yeah, that's uh that's gonna be into the uh every course is every course has a men's league, right? Every course, yeah, uh every every city has uh some sort of league, you know, like there's SNGA, there's uh SNG or uh Southern California, Nevada California. You know what I mean? And you get them in the groups, and then they could see where they've played, and if somebody matched up, then it gives them an opportunity to be like, Hey, you played that course? I didn't know that. What did you think about it? And it engages conversation with them as well, you know what I mean.
MattSo can you love that? Can you search a course now and see what people have rated it?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um, you will have to invite one friend, I believe, in order to unlock what the grassy ratings are. Um, but assuming that you did, you should be able to search any course, and as long as there's ratings on it, you'll see what people have have rated it. Um let me see if I could just pull one up quickly for you to see. Um, say if I go to let's say Torrey Pines uh North Course, hopefully more than one for yeah. Oh, I think North course here. Um you can see uh it's not really that clear, but you can see my rating, that my friends' rating, and the grassy score. Um, and then if you scroll down, uh you'll be able to see what other people have said about the course, whether they posted pictures, their ratings, um, there's my rating, uh, etc. on that stuff.
MattNice. So I like to predict it too, what we think you'd rate it. Yeah, that's a new feature.
SPEAKER_01That's a new feature. Yeah, so that that uses the same algorithm on of the uh predict of the uh suggesting courses to for you. Um and it uses all those to you know predict what you what we think you'd like, how you think you like it. Uh so yeah, that that's a that just came out maybe a few days ago.
MattSo nice.
SPEAKER_01New things are constantly rolling out.
MattUh I see on here book a time, website, call directions. How how is that how difficult was that to get implemented?
Tee Time Integrations And The GolfNow Wall
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean, those buttons themselves are obviously easy, but the data it's was extremely difficult. Um, and this is something that uh I think the app is still struggles with um is getting as many correct golf courses in the application as possible with all the correct website data, you know, scorecard data. I wish, I don't know, hope maybe somebody from 18 Birdies is on here listening and they can help me out figure out where they got all their data or maybe share that data database with me. Um but um I used all the US uh the USGA, yeah, the USGA um database, you know, wherever you put your gin in um to get all that information. And so that's where that came from. And then just like a more on a more technical side, um, when you have like an address, uh like Apple Maps has a thing called an SDK where it's implemented into the actual application and they can read from that address, and if that has a phone number and website, it will be uh filled in automatically, yeah, from there. Um but yeah, there's definitely still bugs everywhere, including that section. Um, you know, getting all that website data is is definitely difficult, um, especially for for a one-man team.
MattDude, you're killing it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, killing it. I appreciate it. Yeah, I appreciate it. Yeah.
MattAnother another question. So I was as I was going through the Vegas stuff today, uh, we I don't know if you know what's going on in Vegas, but we're losing golf courses. Yeah. Like crazy around here because of all the water stuff. So Royal Lynx was on there.
SPEAKER_01I'm not familiar.
MattYeah, uh, Royal Lynx was on there and that place closed down. And it's like I was like, man, I really want to rate Royal Lynx because I've got some good photos of it and it was a really fun course, but it's not there anymore. So are you are you going to have courses that are closed? Or is there something where you could like put on their course no longer open type thing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like someone make the rip list. Yeah, so um yeah, um I think I think I think I'll I as of right now, right? Things are always up for change, but as of right now, I don't think the right move would be to remove them because I think if you played it and had that memory there, you should be able to mark it on your map and yeah, keep that forever. Let's go. But uh as you can see, there's in some courses you can see that there's like a private label or a public label. I think uh once I have time, it's I think it's literally if once I have time, I'll I'll uh that can be changed to um you know a closed. Um and then uh it can be updated that way.
MattWhat Adrian said, yeah, uh guess you're supportive who add information and people to verify, yeah.
JoeI mean it would be nice to have somebody, some like people to be like, hey, this course is no longer open, you know. But these are right, these are the experiences that happened here and moments happened in this location, and you can go back and employ them.
MattAnd that's what I love, that's what I liked about because I was like, man, I really, I really want to do this, but I didn't know if it if I do it, is it gonna be there? Is it still gonna be there once you find out the course is gone?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh, there's no there's no program in my back end that says to remove a course yet.
Future Roadmap: Heatmaps, Caddy AI, Play Dates
MattSo nice. Uh hey, Quinn has made an appearance on the show. That's adorable.
SPEAKER_02Joe is Jacob, Jacob, real quick. I know, you know, I know I know all this is relatively new, but uh any thoughts of maybe uh maybe doing um like booking tea times, like a like a mobile booking engine or something through the site.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so when when Grassi first launched, and I was like, how the heck is this thing ever gonna make money? The first like I think the the obvious comes to mind is like, okay, you know, it's a course discovery, like you can figure out how to make a T time, like integrate T time or make a T time booking software. Um and that was on the like on the docket for a while of doing a lot of research and development into that. Um and I can tell you a little bit of a story about um that experience um and what I learned at least from you know my own research was that most of the T Time booking softwares and are owned by Golf Now, even if it's not labeled as GolfNow. Um like until there's T there's you're you're muted by the way, Joe, if you're trying to talk about it.
JoeSo it it goes through golf now for the most part, right?
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, it's like all the same thing, like they're all like subsidiaries of it. So like golf now is obviously golf now, and then there's like tea up or and which is also just golf now, and there's another one that is also just golf now. Um, and so you know, we I mean, I applied to the uh they have like a an a like a uh a partner program, um applied to it, you know, sent them emails, you know, every day at one point, um just trying to get someone to respond, even called them, and there was just nothing like okay, like looking it's looking like pretty like it's not gonna happen. And and um and then you know, a few months ago later, and then I get an email saying that you know, unfortunately we're not accepted into this program that they have. Um yeah, and so that yeah, and so I mean they're he they're owned by NBC. So um, you know, it's small golf. NBC.
SPEAKER_05They're doing okay.
Feature Ideas: Dates Played, Fittings, Coaches, DMs
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they don't really they don't really care or pay much attention to a small small apps, but you know, as we as you go larger, maybe we can integrate with them or another competitor to them, but yeah, um T Times is is still like on the top of my mind. I would like to book it right on grassy if I could. Yeah, um yeah. It it's it would just be uh, you know, if I could if I eventually you know raise funds for this this startup or you know have a team big enough where I can actually do um outreach to golf courses because that will require you know doing sales and building out that whole other software and right um which you know I'm I'm not opposed to doing, right? It's just uh a lot to would be a lot to do um right now when there's so much to already do just on building out the social platform itself. Um yeah, so I mean if a if a company is listening right now that that runs uh one of these booking softwares and wants to integrate, please hit me up because I'd love to do that. Um but to answer your question, Dan, yes, like that's that's what I wanted to do and still want to do. Um just not sure when that will happen.
JoeUnderstood. Yeah, I would love to know more about that situation too. Like you're talking about most of golf now because yeah, you know, I have friends come in town and they're like, hey, can we play here? Um yeah, wherever course that it shows there's a 9 a.m. T time, and I go to the to the courses uh because we get the local rate or we call or and they're like no, that's not available. So I mean, is that a is that like uh some company buys it and they hold it and try and write? That's what I'm thinking. I don't want to know more of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I yeah, it it's interesting, right? There's like a course by me, uh it's a muni called uh Los Verdes. I'm not sure if you've ever played it, um, but it's a muni out in in uh in LA technically. Um and their tea times get all bought up like the minute it's released. And and uh yeah, I mean what was going on there, wasn't there?
MattWasn't like some Korean game. So yeah, there was a Korean game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Shout out Dave Finks. As far as as far as I heard, I heard the same thing as well, but I I have no idea. Um and I don't know, it's interesting because it's like, okay, do these teetime softwares really care if they're still making their money at the end of the day? Uh you know, yeah, probably not, but but yeah. Um but yeah, there's there's so many there's so many features I want to add. Um, run them down.
MattLet's hear what do you want to add?
Content Quality, Bucket Lists, And Hidden Gems
SPEAKER_01I don't know, put on right on the spot. Um like off the top of my head, um I wanna I want to add like a map that shows like a heat map um of where we think based off of that ML algorithm, um where like the spots either where you're looking at on the map or around the world, like we think that you'll actually enjoy golfing. Um so that's that's one I was really considering making. And then I mentioned it earlier was that AI chat bot that can take in all your data um and you can talk about it, um talk to it about um your own ratings or even live tour data. I think it'd be cool just to be like who's uh like who's like rank going up the leaderboard right now at a fast rate or you know who's hot right now, etc. Um yeah.
MattWhat is there uh I may have missed this, but is there a spot where you can put in the date you played it?
SPEAKER_01No, I don't think there is besides putting it right in the notes, the notes section of it, there is not currently a spot to like mark when you played it. But there will be there can be.
MattI haven't put any of the dates when I played, and I was thinking that like, oh man, that might be helpful because you know, courses do have renovations, they go under certain things, and it may have a shitty rating, and they this great reno, and it's great now, and it would poorly reflect that because the dates not on there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I completely agree. I think that was now that you mentioned it, I think that was brought up someone brought it up to me before it was like, okay, I can see the rating and I can see what they how they liked it, but when when did they actually play the course? Yeah, and that that would be valuable information. So um yeah, that can die that could definitely be added as well. So many things to add. So many things, so many things to add, but yeah.
MattOh, here we go.
JoeOkay, because Matthew Man, right? So um I think I think a great feature if you have not thought about it, um, is if you can um mine the data to find out where free fittings are near you, right? Like Callaway, Tailormade, Ping, wherever, because Matt's a fitter for Callaway. If you can mine the data from their websites, like there's a free fitting near you. Go see these guys if you're interested in getting fit for Callaway or TailorMade or Ping. And throw a link out there where you can schedule that fitting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess because the only way to really hear about that is if you get that news directly from them, right? Or you're searching for it.
JoeYou'd have to go to their website. They I mean they don't promote it, they honestly don't promote it, really, not on their Instagram. You leave the courses. So it's course, or you go to their website if you're interested in like free fittings near you. Boom.
Playing Less To Build More: Founder’s Journey
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because honestly, yeah, no, that's a great idea at the end of the day, you know what I mean? So yeah, Matt's over here, like, I dude, I was I was I was gonna have a chill day. He didn't think of that one, he didn't think of that one. I love it.
MattI'm I hey, I'm gonna start posting it on on on on just on my feed, you know.
Gear Talk And Putters, Then Creator Community
SPEAKER_01Hey, we got a fitting advance here, so that's kind of that's kind of what I'm hoping Grassy becomes, is like like you could. Oh, I don't know if Matt froze there. Um, but I got you back. I got you back. Um, but like for like whether it's you know you're doing a fitting Matt and you post about it, that people in your area can see that and um you know hit you up directly. Like, there's no way to really hit message a fitter right now, um, or to even communicate. And you know, that can go for um if you're a golf instructor as well. How do you get yourself out there, you know, if if it just in general, how do you get yourself out there? I don't I don't know. Like, do you have to go buy Instagram ads? Like that's not ideal, you know, that's not ideal. Um like I I I hope Grazi becomes a place where people can share those type of things um and get real communication and real in-life experiences from them, you know, whether it is a fitting or whether it's discovering a new instructor by you who's you know got a lot of good ratings, and um yeah. And for me, it's it's trying to curate and get good content on the platform, right? Like I'm loving all the posts you're doing, Matt, because you're posting amazing photos, and that makes the platform extremely like content rich, um, making it much more enjoyable for you know new new years users, existing users to actually go and scroll the feed. Um like one of the things that I I enjoy the most is just going down the for you page and just looking at some cool golf courses and yeah, crazy clubhouses I didn't even know existed. Like I'm like, where this this golf course in the middle of, you know, I don't know, Kentucky has like an insane course with like a you know, I'm like, whoa. And then I I find myself more often than not commenting added to the bucket list because I I didn't know that there would be so many insane gems out there, right? Right, like yeah, there's so many gems. There's so many gems out there, and you'd never know about it. You'd never know about it, like the golf now photo or the Google Photos photo, like you don't like they're horrible. No, you're not gonna look at that.
MattWell, my home course is Revere, and their website and their social media post pictures from 20 years ago when there was no houses and it was just a desert, and it doesn't even look like the same golf course, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. And so, you know, I can I'm just hoping that you know, there a lot of interesting and and really rich content are shared of the platform, and I hope people feel encouraged to share it. Um, and you know, trying to foster the community to be you know supportive and be like a fun place to be. Um you know, it's just like on top of it all, right? It was funny. I I did see somebody like some some some account be kind of a troll recently. I'm like, what the heck's going on here? Is there's already a troll on here? There you go.
JoeYeah, you're only as only as good as your best troll. All right, you're only as good as your best troll.
MattHey, we had uh Kyle ask a question here. He said, Can you update your ratings? Can you add pics later? What happens with future ratings?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so um if you read a if you write a course right now, um and you you you can update it, and if you do update it right now, it updates that same post. But after 24 hours, if you rate make another rating, could be just like the next day, you maybe you will play it again and felt differently, um, it will create a whole new post. Um, but that rating does get replaced on your ranked list. Um but on that course, you but your right now the your posts that are automatically created are kind of your timeline in a way of the history of how you felt about it. Um so yeah, you can update you can update those ratings, but you know, your posts are going to be kind of how you look at your opinion changing on that course over time.
MattYeah.
SPEAKER_01Um hopefully that answers that. I mean, you can update it and update photos, etc.
MattWell, it'd be it'd be cool too, like if uh like a renovation, uh you know, a course that like completely changes the green complex and you're in love with it now and you have a photo of before and after, you know, it's a great way to to have that in your timeline to see it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. And yeah, and Joe, looking at like your your your wall, your wall of golf balls, like that's I think that's like kind of also the gist of what grassy is in a way, as well.
JoeSo many more right here, too, that I gotta find somewhere to put like the same amount right here. Those are from courses I've played, so I gotta box right here too. I gotta figure out what to do with.
Stories From The Road And Why They Matter
SPEAKER_01Like, I'm hoping Grassy also is that in a way, like your digital verge version of that. Yeah, yeah.
JoeUm digital wallets, bro. They're coming. I'll tell you that much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and um, and I don't know if you guys have played Pokemon or or whatever, but another feature I was thinking of making is like a Pokedex of golf courses, right? Um, where you try to collect collect them all, all your local ones, all the all the PGA tour ones, and like you get like new badges if you if you played all the courses that are currently on tour now. And I like it.
JoeYeah, it's a lot of cool things, but I I have one more left in Vegas. One more left in Vegas. Not a ton of desire to go there, but I have one more.
SPEAKER_01So to kind of touch on that, is it because they're mainly like private courses that you need to have a member invite you to, or you just have no?
JoeI have to go play goat track that's on the other side of town, and it's just like you know, it's like hey, it's Saturday morning, I get to go play golf. Do I really want to go play? That's so fair.
MattSo much time to play good golf. Do you really want to go play a shit course?
JoeYeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, it'll happen. I gotta do it. I gotta do it. Yeah, you gotta get that rating in. Gotta fucking and what do you got left?
SPEAKER_02When the win. That's the only course I ever.
MattI got win and summit. Um, but I played the DI before the win, so that's kind of yeah.
SPEAKER_01I played the DI too. Closed. I'm jealous. I have not played any of the Vegas courses yet. What? I hope to eventually come out, bro.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're not too far.
SPEAKER_01It's hard. It's hard. It's hard when you're when you're a uh a broke developer. You know, you just like those courses can can can cost a pretty penny. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Was was when like$400 for a round?
SPEAKER_02Uh a little bit more than that.$600.
SPEAKER_01Once there's enough pro subscribers, I'll I'll let you guys know.
JoeYeah, I played it twice, but I paid$250 the first time and it was free the second time. So that's a great average.
MattJoe?
JoeNo, I I I was busy at work today. I I download the app and everything. Um, I have not ranked anything yet, and that's where I'm gonna struggle because they're all they're all so different, and there's also there's so many moments that happen at each one, and like that's where I'm gonna struggle a lot because like is it yeah, you know, and I'm a huge golf course architecture guy, and yeah, and I'm a huge moments guy, you know what I mean? Like what happened during the round, like how memorable was it? So that's where I'm gonna struggle.
Platform Availability And Design Details
MattThat's gonna take that's that's another one, Joe feature. We always talk about how the PGA tour never does a good enough job about talking about the golf course, yeah. Oh, yeah, they'll have their quick little 30-minute segment as I come out of commercial saying architecture redesign design, blah blah blah. Yeah, but that would be you know, if you had a spot on the golf course to where you could say open here, architecture here, redesign here, that would be that would be sick.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I think nerding out about like why holes were designed the way they were, or like who made it and when and why, is a whole part of golf that is skipped over, I feel, for some reason. Like you only really get it if you watch maybe some you read in a magazine or if you watch some video like YouTube videos where I you know I I'm sure you guys have heard of um of uh Eric Anders Lang and and the uh and his community, and the videos that they put out, what's their what's their club called again? Um random golf club. Random golf club. Um like the productions that they put out, and same with like manner's golf is I've never wanted to play Iceland so bad in my life.
JoeIt's like holy shit, like their whole launch of the club collection. They killed marketing team, raise, raise, raise, we need more money.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're crushing it, and they tell like there's so much stories to be told about all these different courses around the world. It's yeah, it's it's it's invigorating, it's it's exciting, and you know, hopefully, you know, along with Grassy, we see that story, those stories being told, you know, a little bit more, and uh, you know, people just sharing that more.
MattSo, how much golf are you playing right now?
SPEAKER_01Here's the funniest thing. After watching Grassy, I played the least amount of golf in my life. I'm sure you do.
MattUh they always say if you want to play golf, don't get in the golf space.
Goals: Retention, Rich Posts, Supportive Culture
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like it's like a kid. I've been no, I I've been in this chair like every day, you know, from when I wake up to two in the morning to to, you know, just trying to build out new features, squish bugs, you know, launch it just launch things, you know, it's it's crazy. And then I'm like, I I can't believe, you know, I'm working on building this community of of rating golf courses, and I haven't even rated all the courses I played. Literally because I just haven't had the time to. And I'm like, and I've like, I feel I have like this own self-consciousness of I don't want to spam people's feeds, everyone gets notified when I post. I'm like, I don't know, there's a whole there's a whole cloud of it. Uh but I I did play golf, I think maybe like the last two weeks. I played a local muni called um uh a laundry golf park, which is a cheap golf golf course, but in just good enough condition that you know you have a good time out there. Um but yeah, I I I don't know if you guys have felt the same with this podcast, if you guys are playing less or if you guys are doing more golf work, but oh no, I do everything.
MattThese guys just sit here and talk and look pretty.
SPEAKER_01That's all yeah, that's all that's all that matters, right? You just gotta show up. Um but yeah, I I have not my golf, my actual golf numbers have have uh halted since this project has kind of caught wind.
MattAll right, so let's do uh what's your handicap?
SPEAKER_01So on Jen, I think it might be like an eight, but I think it's more like a maybe twelve. Yeah, we can play straight up. I mean you can play straight up. Let's go. Let's go.
MattWhat's uh what's in the bag? Go through the bag. What are you playing?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, so my wedges are Voki wedges, Vokei wedges. Um I have so my dream when I was growing up was always to get the uh titalist blades. Um and I I ended up buying them for myself a couple years ago and I decked out all titles. So I have you know, Vokey wedges, I have the blades up until I think up until seven or six iron. And then I think I and then I have the um I forgot what they're what the actual name of it is, but like the the cavity back version of the titleists from um you know six to four and then tireless driver and uh tireless wood. And then I got these guys though. What kind of putter? You got a Scotty too? I see those persimmons back there. Yeah, that's the let's go.
MattWhat's the what putter? What putter are you gaming?
Closing, Giveaway CTA, And Where To Find Grassy
SPEAKER_01It's a Scotty. Uh I've the is a Scotty. Is it Scotty? Yeah, of course. Yep, and it's first putter to be fair. I mean, and I mean I was lucky to get it. It was uh the first putter, like nice putter I I got, and I got it you know as a Christmas gift when probably when I was like 14, and I've been using the same putter since. So nice. Definitely got some mileage out of it. Nice putters are emotional too, though. You know, they're they're like uh they're a butt. That's the reason probably why Tiger has been using the same putter ever you know forever. Yeah, I don't know if you have seen that photo of his putter. It's so cool to look at it. Yeah, that that perfect little mark on it, right? Weird spot right there.
MattYeah, we love talking putters on here. We had Sam Hahn from Lab Golf, he was on the show. Oh cool, uh Dave. Yeah, so I I made a video last year that where I was making fun of the revealer and it blew up, yeah. And it went it got like 1.4 million views, wasn't expecting it whatsoever. And Sam reached out to me and we kind of had a back and forth, and then yeah, and then he hopped on the show and we talked for what two hours.
SPEAKER_01Great episode. That was a good episode. I need to go watch that.
MattYeah, we've had Dave from uh Goodwood on. Um, he's he's amazing. Uh Garson, we never even talked about Garson. Garson Grip. Shout out, Garson. That's our sponsor. Gars and grip, as always.
JoeLet's go, guys. There is a giveaway. We're giving away something, guys. Yeah, don't forget, we always give away something, Garson.
Matt17 entries in the in the giveaway right now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, oh let's go. Yeah, we you gotta be here at the end. We'll get some Garson on Grassy, too.
MattYeah, absolutely. Yeah, I'll talk to I'll I'll talk to Andrew and have him go check it out too. So yeah. Um what what's your what's your goal like let's say in the next three months? What's uh what's your number one thing? It's gotta be users, right? That's the biggest thing. The more users, the better. Or do you have other ambitions?
SPEAKER_01Um it's not users per se. Uh my goal, I mean, I probably should have a better defined goal to start it off. Um because this this thing, this, this whatever like what Grassy has is just been a wave of just everything at once. Um but I I I really just want to see like my goal is just hopefully to foster the community in terms to just get more, you know, rich content, more people posting photos and and more video content. Um and just seeing that the people who I guess my my one of the more defined goals that I have is that the people who are using the the application uh keep coming back to it um and and and continually being rewarded for either the work that they put in and rating courses um or they're putting in and and sharing their own perspectives with the community and commenting on posts. Got a five day three going. Let's go. Let's go. That's how fresh it is in our yeah. But yeah, that's I think that that's like my what I'm looking for. Like that's what I'm trying to work on the most is fostering a good community where people love coming on grassy and love sharing, whether it's just like uh a pick of a new club they bought or you know, a new round, whatever it may be. Um yeah, I think that's that's what I'm focusing on the most right now. I like how it's I got seven new followers since we've been on. Oh wow. Let's go. You might be able to qualify for the for the uh the creator program that I launched soon.
JoeI I I I love it because it's for it's for golfers, it's not for people taking it. It's people that enjoy the game and enjoy playing golf. It's not for people that are in any way trying to take advantage of golf, it's for people that are out there playing and engaging with the game that is probably the greatest game, is the best game ever created, in my opinion. You know what I mean? I agree, I agree.
MattLike that, I mean there's just played yet. Terrible. There's there's terrible, no excuses.
SPEAKER_01Yes, there's there's so many cool things. Like, um, I'm not sure. I I mean I kind of want to call out the top of the of the rated leaderboard, uh, Jekyll Golf. He owns a golf shop in LA and he's rated over, I think, over 155 courses in the city. Yeah, 156.
MattUm and don't worry, that's gonna get bobbed here real soon. Don't worry.
SPEAKER_01And then he, you know, he he hits me up and you know, and as well as other users hit me up like with you know, feature requests or or just say that they love the app. And I think that's like just hearing that is the reward that I appreciate the most is and I think the one of the most surprising things, which probably comes from the golf community, is how supportive, you know, even you know, getting uh some outreach from you guys, like how supportive it is and and how much people want each other to succeed has just been really cool to see. Absolutely. And uh, you know, there's and there's also cool benefits. Like I I was lucky enough that one of one of the users um hadn't couldn't make the Genesis open this weekend, and they were they were kind enough to to share share that with with Jesse and I to go uh go out there and and just you know enjoy golf. Um yeah, I was your first Jacob's the Tom of Grassy. He is the Tom. I did I did I did uh it's I did for a minute I did have uh a Tom uh inspired profile photo. Profile picture with a white it was there for a second, but I decided to remove it. But yeah, I'm the Tom of Golf of golf special, whatever.
SPEAKER_05That's hilarious.
JoeI think what's also really cool about it is like I'm at the you know, the reason we all got involved together is uh via Instagram, and it's much harder to do that nowadays, right? Like to find like um I mean you can find people that play golf in your area and hit them up, but like this is a way to if you see someone's playing all the time at the the local course by you, it's a way to engage with them and and create friends at golf. And I mean, yeah, that's why eight years ago, nine seven years ago, so it's like it's harder to do that nowadays.
SPEAKER_01So it's it's a yeah, people that's that's one of the main reasons I added the uh direct messaging feature. If you can just go and DM anybody, um like if you see like one of one of my best friends who lives out in Boise was like, Who is this? Like rating all these courses around me, and I'm like, Yeah, all right, I'll have the DM feature. You'll be able to hit them up soon, and you guys can go play golf together because you know people are always kind of looking to to find a you know a good new golf buddy. Yeah, because solar biomes get all around.
JoeI don't even I don't even like if I have a moment and nobody else is playing, I don't even want to go play by myself anymore because it's so much more enjoyable with with a homie, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, it's all about it's all about the community experience and absolutely there's no no experience is fun in my opinion if it's not shared with somebody, you know, and you know other than it's not real, it's just in your head.
JoeThen it's doesn't also you don't want to go out and hit a hole in one and nobody's there, right? Right? That's true. Fuck, dude, that would kill me, man. Because I probably wouldn't be filming anyway. I'm terrible at pulling my phone.
MattJoe likes to Joe likes to hit it on the lip. Yeah, yeah, just leave it resting on the lip.
unknownYeah, yeah.
JoeAs close as I've ever been.
MattOh all right, so uh is it on uh Apple and the other phone?
SPEAKER_01Or just currently it's only on Apple. Um as soon as I have time to develop it, you know, and all the bugs in the iOS are figured out, then you know I'll I'll figure out the uh Android version. So I do apologize for all those who are on Android. I didn't mean to leave you out, it's just a consequence of the situation right now. Um it's gonna be way easier to build on Apple, right?
JoeOr is it easier to build on Android?
SPEAKER_01Uh so I've only built iOS apps, so I can't even comment on on Android, but Apple has made it very uh enjoyable to make uh software products for them. So um, and I think just using their the I I also just love how the app works on an iPhone. I think it's super clean and and uh just the iOS, yeah. So uh yeah, I currently only have a lot of things.
MattThe one thing that I like about the map also is when you uh expand it, it does the the color rankings too. So courses that you rate a row or red on the map, and I mean that is so freaking cool.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I'm glad you liked that. I think the small details, uh you know, of the like the tiniest details are what make products good, and hopefully that's what you find out of Grassy is just the small details that you know I did the meadows, guys.
MattDid you see that?
JoeOh, you did the meadows? Well, I didn't finish. Wow, I didn't finish, so I can't I can't I can't rank that one.
MattUh but and look, look, this is the main photo on the page for the course. Is that your photo?
JoeYeah, that that I mean that that shack was pretty interesting. That was Texas Chain Top Massacre.
SPEAKER_01That was uh that was full on true routes to the fairways, man. That that's the stories that I want to just read that people that experience that people had. I just want to see that and be like, have it just spend it. And I just want to spend hours reading people's like times on courses.
MattWe played yeah, we played Percell Farms, which is amazing, and then we were trying to find one more course just to knock it out, and so we found this it's called the Meadows, and we go and play. And no, it was incorrect. Isn't that right?
SPEAKER_02No, it was a fill-in because of wasn't it a fill-in because we uh we couldn't get Ross Bridge.
JoeYeah, no, no, no, no. We're talking about the Meadows, the par three. Uh you're right, actually. So we played Purcell, we played for cell, and then we hit the Meadows where where Bob lost his rangefinder. Yes, Timberline was a time because we couldn't play Timberline was yeah, yeah. And that's what's awesome about that, too, is meadows is not great. No, Timberline is great, and I I had never heard of it. We were just looking for somewhere to play, yeah. So we were where was this?
MattAlabama, Alabama. So we play Percell Farms is amazing, and then we go to this goat track that I mean it Joe's right, tree roots in the fairway, Bermuda grass, rough, brains, tea boxes that hadn't been mowed. It was bad. Our friend Bob lost his range finder. He called them, they said, Yeah, somebody turned it in. We got it. And he's like, Oh, great, you know, uh, can I buy a shipping label? Will you ship it to me? Yeah, what's your address? They never shipped it.
JoeAlso, that whole trip, we we lost our room that we had, or the Airbnb we had. We had to stay in some random place. So many good spots. And then, and then Bob had uh Chipotle is a vegan, they had to they put uh the burrito and is all juicy and burn up the sides. So I mean, like those are the those are the things that you remember more, you know. Shout out golf trips, the best.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and now that that's now that that's on grassy, the next person who's gonna be in that area can see that directly and be like, All right, not going there, not going there. Yeah, yeah. Or they do want to go there because they they want to have an interesting experience, like you guys, you know.
