382: Las Vegas Golf Prices, Matt's NY Trip, & US Open Qualifying

Welcome back to episode 382 of the Chasing Daylight Podcast! Flying by. We're a little bummed out right now because the uh the knights just lost. Uh game four. It's now tied up 2-2. They head back to North Carolina on Thursday. Quick turnaround on the fly home. That's good because the game after that, which we'll have to have, is now on Sunday. So this weekend's golf tournament will not get delayed, or we'll be able to watch the game for those who care. I know not everybody watching or listening is a Knights fan, but we are, so we talk about him. Uh, so the the headline for this week's show. By the way, we're missing Joe. He's run a little bit behind. He has some fatherly duties he had to uh take care of before hopping on. Uh, but Dan's here, Jeremy's here, I'm here, Joe will be here in a few. Uh, but with all the shit that's going on in Vegas right now, uh, we've got the the A's are in town playing at uh the ballpark in Summerland. Dan and I are going to a game Friday night. Uh the Knights are going crazy. The the Aces have won three championships since moving to the town. Uh, we have two NASCAR races. We have an F1 race. Uh UFC, I mean, it's not as dominant as it was, you know, a few years ago, as far as in Vegas. It's kind of worldwide. T Lou, he'll be here, he'll be here in a few. He's coming. And uh then we have uh the basketball team is in the works for the NBA coming here. We just got a women's hockey league professional team. We have the Henderson Silver Knights, the Knights uh double A or minor league affiliate. We have uh the flat or the Neon, what are they called? The lights, the lights of the soccer team. Um there's there's stuff coming like crazy, and then the A's are gonna be here in a few years. We have some of the best restaurants in the world spread out across the strip, and a lot of restaurants that are really good throughout the valley that was not like it is now, you know, 15-20 years ago. Uh incredible hotels. Uh, this is you know, it is an entertainment capital of the world. Um, F1 has really brought a big audience to this city that everybody knows about Vegas, you know, but uh you know people now want to come here because the F1 race and the town is going nuts. Except for golf.

Vegas Golf is Getting Too Expensive

Yeah. I was gonna bring it back. It took a little while, but I was gonna bring it back. Uh we're losing golf courses, and I had a very upsetting thing happen to me today. Uh trying to finalize the contract with what I used to call my home course, Revere. But I've I feel jaded, you know, I feel smitten. I I just they absolutely raked us over the coals uh at the rate they wanted us to pay to play there in November. And I get it. I get it, I understand, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. And I don't. It's it's a it sucks, you know. Um thankfully, their sister course, uh uh Legacy stepped up, and so we will now be hosting the VGN Finals uh two-day event at Legacy. Yeah. Oh, I was texting Jeremy that, right? I wasn't that wasn't in the I'm sorry, that wasn't in the group chat.

I mean, it's it's it's tough out there. It's really tough out there to find. Thankfully, you know, we have a lot of friends and we know a lot of people, and so we can get decent rates at at different you know courses across town, and and you know, we've we've worked that angle put the time in to get that, and we're very grateful for that. Um, if that wasn't the case, man, I don't know how much we'd be playing. You know, I I'm sure something we'd be doing more travel because it's it's getting ridiculous. Yeah, uh it broke my heart. I I wanted to hold the finals at at Revere. I I love playing there in the winter time. Uh it's it's a lot of fun. Uh Lexington is always in great shape. Um, but lately, you know, that I've been hearing, I haven't played it in a while because I've we've been working and traveling and and uh excuse my I have airplane subway New York street throat going on right now. Jeremy um and I thought I was in the group chat, but it I it wasn't. Um the finals at Revere got canceled. Um holy moly. It's been moved to legacy. Um because I was trying to lock in the the finalizing of the contract today, and and uh what they wanted per player each day was astronomical.

Wow, yeah, golf's getting this golf is expensive, guys. So I I I spent the first few minutes of the intro uh telling everybody how Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world. We've had all this stuff going on, all new sports teams, all new events, crazy concerts, venues, the sphere, you name it. But golf is like declining so fast. Conditions across some of the local courses is going to shit. Um the rates are going through the roof for what is, in my opinion, very inadequate golf compared to what you're paying.

He took me and a couple of my co-workers um to go eat at Pizza Rock for lunch. Uh he's I saw him press that subscribe button. So if you're listening, Aaron, thank you. Um but no, he he's he he started playing golf a year ago, and he's geeked about it, right? And you know, when I started playing golf, it's almost 10 years ago now, which is crazy. I mean, just the difference in green fees is astronomical, and the con, like you say, Matt, the conditions are definitely different, you know. It's I mean, look at Wild Horse, you know, Darden did everything he could over at Wildhorse, yeah. And and there was times when it was fucking great, it was pristine, and now it's just kind of you know, beat. And you know, a lot of courses aren't putting in the love and they're raking in all this money because they're catching all this money from green fees, but yeah, it's it's a different time.

It and I was telling everybody, you know, we're fortunate that we know people at some places and and have friends that have memberships and card holders, and and we get to play some pretty awesome golf courses at not rack rated, yeah. Um, but we were rack rated at my i said what is formerly my home course. I'm gonna have to change that.

Um, because one of the guys that we were at lunch with works over at the Lake Las Vegas, and he works right on Reflection Bay, and we were talking about golf and all that, but yeah, it's just it's tough, dude. I don't know how I used to like the the when I used to play like two times a week or once a week, like if the prices were that when back then, like I don't even know if I could have could have done it, you know, it's just crazy.

And something that we experienced this in here because I was in New York the last four days over the weekend, and service fees. Service fees are starting to be the new tax that they're just raping you on, and they're like, fuck it, let's just we'll we'll instead of making it a $19 burger, we'll make it a $15 burger and put a five-dollar service fee on there. You know, it's it's oh it's an affordable burger, but I'm sorry, the the service fees, uh you know, we can't we can't control the service fees.

It's getting pretty much it's making me wonder about my choices of living in Vegas, is you know, all the things that I love about this city and how great it's become. But am I gonna be able to golf here in five years?

You know, am I gonna be able to I think it's like that everywhere though? Like I was talking, my dad, you know, he he's retired, but he works up at the golf course there, and it was like he was saying that I think it was like 60 or 70 bucks for a round, which there is like double what it used to be when I remember. Used to be 35 bucks with a cart weekend, now it's 60, 70, 75 bucks, so it's everywhere.

There's a there's a really big separation between Vegas and the Vegas local community, and you know, 30 years ago that wasn't the case, it was just the locals who worked in the industry trying to support you know the people that come here, and it's really turned in, I mean, Summerlin, Henderson, you know, even North Las Vegas and out Cadence and Sky Canyon, all that stuff has really grown the community feel here, and so there's a lot to do outside of the strip for the locals, which before there wasn't always, you know, you had a station casino here, a PT's pub there. It wasn't really you know like it is now, but we have a lot of options now, and it just sucks that one of our really great options 10 years ago, golf, is not a great option anymore.

We attempted to go to a Yankee game. Uh, it was Yankees versus the Red Sox in Yankee Stadium, had some you know, good seats. I I was surprised at how good the seats were. I thought being up that high, we were gonna have shitty views, but it was a fantastic view. And uh it got rained out. Um, second time in my life trying to go see a Yankee game in New York, and it got rained out. Um, so everybody is leaving the stadium. It's raining outside, so everybody's trying to get under the train. And the train, you know, you swipe your phone, you go in, and there's this small room that maybe holds 200 people that leads upstairs to the tracks. Well, there's 20,000 people trying to get on the southbound train, and we were like stuck like sardines, just you know, no movement, trains were delayed, it was shit weather, and so it's humid as fuck because it's raining, and we're all trapped in this room, and I'm just I'm just ripping sweat, right? And I'm like, well, at least I could at least I can watch hell. Oh, Joe would have been he'd have been praying, he'd been praying, you know, Jesus, come save me now. I can't do this.

I'm like, no, dude, go ahead. And he's wearing a Boston Bruins jersey, right? Hockey jersey. And I'm like, Oh, I'm in a t-shirt and shorts, and I'm sweating my balls off. You're in jeans and a hockey sweater. Cap off to you, sir. You know, but he was like, um, he goes, Who are you rooting for? I said, I'm I I live in Vegas. He's like, Oh, he goes, he goes, You guys got a hell of a team, you know, and blah blah blah. And and we had this like you know, 10-minute conversation about hockey, and you know, because Cassidy mean though, and it was it was a great conversation, and it was he had admiration for the Knights, their front office, and how they handle things because they're a no bullshit team. And it's like, wow, you're the one person that I've talked to in this state that actually has a decent opinion. And he wasn't from New York, so that's awesome. Yeah, it was it was good times.

I was telling, I was telling Jeremy yesterday, I met some new characters in New York on the street, like characters I hadn't seen before because you meet a lot of characters collecting Pokemon out there. You meet a lot of characters because it is so diverse, and there's so many people. You can run into a new character every time you run turn around the corner. all right, so on the golf side of things, couple things going on. Um, oh shit, I forgot to bring them out here. God damn it. Uh I got the those new shoes from Parlinks, and I wore them yesterday. Jeremy and I played with Steven Jackson yesterday out at Boulder Creek, got a little practice round in for the tournament this weekend. And uh I put them on and I was like, man, these are pretty freaking comfortable. They have a different kind of insole, it it has the like the nubs like the G4s do. Um, but it's it's got carbon in it, and it's very supportive. It was very comfortable, and they have a special tread that is it's three layers, it's like a little pyramid. And my god, does that thing grip the ground? I was blown away, super, super comfortable. Um, they have two versions. There is a water-resistant version that has mesh in it, breathes fantastic. Yesterday, a couple times the wind was moving out there yesterday, and uh got some of that airflow through that through that mesh. Wonderful, wonderful. And they also have a waterproof version that doesn't have the mesh, that's all leather, that's a lot more uh it's a little thicker. Um, so that's gonna be a band and shoe for sure. PNW shoe, band and shoe. But uh, I was chatting with Brian from Par Links today. Um, we're gonna hop on a phone call next week and discuss uh what he wants to talk about, and he's gonna come on the show. So he's gonna I gave him the option he can come on, do the live, and interact with everybody if they want, or you know, we can do the one-on-one interview like we've done in the past.
