Join us for an enlightening conversation with Sylvain Mancuso, a pioneer in holistic health practices, as he shares his remarkable journey from traditional physiotherapy to a multifaceted approach that incorporates osteopathy, mindset coaching, nutrition, and exercise science. Inspired by a personal encounter with a sciatica patient, Sylvain's comprehensive methods aim to empower individuals by focusing on the root causes of their health challenges, integrating physical, mental, and emotional wellness. If you're eager to transform your approach to health, this episode promises insights into building long-term resilience and vitality through personalized exercise regimens, tailored nutrition, and mindset coaching.

We also tackle the profound connections between dietary choices, emotional well-being, and chronic pain management. Sylvain and I discuss how lifestyle habits, like consuming too much caffeine or sugary drinks, can significantly affect overall health, and why addressing these root causes can lead to sustainable well-being. We touch on the limitations of conventional medicine and underscore the benefits of holistic practices, similar to those found in Chinese medicine. For listeners overwhelmed by health information, we offer practical advice on making gradual, impactful changes, such as incorporating omega-3 rich foods like avocados, while also considering the implications of cooking methods on nutritional value. Whether you're in New Brunswick or participating online, Sylvain's evidence-based, personalized treatment plans are designed to guide you on your path to wellness.

Speaker 3

Thanks for inviting me.

Speaker 2

Yeah, of course I don't know if you want to give the audience a little bit more of a background about yourself, if you don't mind.

Speaker 3

Yeah, I'm Sylvain Mancuseau, kidney corner here in New Brunswick, canada. My background I was a French physiotherapist in France and did my physiotherapy study in Paris and after I moved in the west of France and did my osteopathy study. And after my osteopathy study I decided to move in Canada, in New Brunswick, in the east of Canada. I have two kids pretty grown up now, 16 and 18. And I have my practice here in Moncton since 13 years now and it's going well and we evaluate a lot between the beginning of just the physiotherapy point of view to the osteopathic side with more holistic approach now.

Speaker 3

And that's my background.

Speaker 2

Oh, that's wonderful. Yeah, I noticed you guys offer massage therapy too. I do that.

Speaker 3

Yeah, we do massage, Karu and osteo.

Speaker 2

Wow, very nice. And what inspired you to transition from traditional physiotherapy to a more holistic approach to health and wellness?

Speaker 3

It was one of my first patients. I finished my physiotherapy study with the feeling that I will save the world, I will be the best and help so many people. And one of my first patients was a patient with sciatica pain and I opened my physi therapy book about sciatica and tried everything I can to help this patient. But after seven, eight sessions the pain was still there. I know it was better coming back, you know, not really a big improvement in the quality of life of this patient. And I had the chance to work with another therapist who she was doing osteopathy study and I said, ok, can you help me? And so I just send me the patient and I will see what can I do. And only in two sessions she fixed the patient.

Speaker 3

And I said, ok, why did I miss fix the patient? And I said, okay, why did I miss? You know, because you know I, I was thinking and I did my assessment correctly, do my treatment plan, and so you didn't miss anything about the back. But the pain was not coming from the, coming from the back. And I say what? So yeah, she had a bad ankle sprain two years before and she was limping and her back was flaring up because the back was trying to do the job for the ankle and what you were doing? You were looking at the symptom, working on the back pain and the sciatica and all that, but the flare up was come from the foot. But the flare-up was come from the foot and she worked on the ankle, the knee, hip and the back was gone, because it was just the tip of the iceberg.

Speaker 3

And when I realized that, I said, okay, did I miss something during my physiotherapy study? And she said, no, no, you, just because she was a physiotherapist too. She said, no, we are too much symptomatic. We are looking at the symptom but not looking at the root cause of the problem. And from that I said, okay, what do I need to do? And she said you just need to go back five years to do other studies. Okay, let's do that.

Speaker 2

Oh okay, oh wow, that's interesting. Yeah, how do you integrate osteopathy, mindset coaching, nutrition and exercise science into a comprehensive treatment plan for your clients?

Speaker 3

It's about my life story, you know, because I begin with physiotherapy and I understood that the physical side is important, understood than the physical side is important with the osteopathy side, understood than seeing the patient from the head to the toe make a huge difference. You know, because we are not just looking at the symptom but after, when you look at that, the mindset I I don't know if you know dr hammer, it's the new german medicine you know know, in the 1970s in Germany. Yeah, I've heard of him and I was always curious about the mindset called create a illness or increase the issue. You know, and because with my personal story then I needed to work on my mindset to be a better father, I saw that I could improve the life of my patient with their own mindset. And often in the session we are talking about human needs and help patients about their everyday habits, because changing a little bit their everyday habits can make a huge difference on the long run. And after the we always say it's coming with three.

Speaker 3

You know we have the nutrition, the sorry the mindset, the exercise, and the nutrition was the last part of the three pillars we use in the clinic and we are really strong on anti-inflammatory diet, because what you eat is going to change the inflammation level in the body and can have other influences in your body. About creation of new pathway in the brain, because we know that the gut brain axis is really important and what you eat is going to increase the ability of your brain to grow and evaluate. And when we see patients we really try to. We really we are really strong. The physical side, because we have carotid massage and osteopaths, but at the time we integrate that with online programs. About nutrition and mindset.

Speaker 2

Oh wow, I like the nutrition part. That's really important, yeah, and the exercise, of course. All of it together.

Speaker 3

Yeah, and often it's just a two-minimum shift. You don't need to change everything, but you just need to tweak a small things.

Speaker 2

that will make the difference on the long run right exactly, and can you share a success story where your unique approach, you know, significantly improved a patient's quality of life?

Speaker 3

yeah, I had a patient came a few years ago for a chronic fatigue and you know the idea is, if you have a chronic fatigue it's maybe because there is some tightness in your joint that you need to. It's harder for you to move. You know, when we do, we did the physical side. But when I was talking with this patient I understood that the chronic fatigue was a way to fit some human needs for her and you know we have six human needs is significant, certainty, uncertainty, love, connection, growth and contribution.

Speaker 3

And when I was talking with this patient I said, okay, how do you feed these needs with your chronic fatigue? And we did a small exercise and she realized that when she had chronic fatigue and she was thyroid, she was connected with her family, she had significance and she had certainty. And when you do three things, when an action is feeding three human needs at the same time, it's like an addiction and your brain is going there each time and I said, okay, let's do an exercise Now we are going to take these human needs. And on the left side you have the bad vehicle and it's a chronic fatigue, and how you can switch this bad vehicle and find good vehicle to feed your love and connection, your significance and your certainty. And just doing this exercise and make her realize that the chronic fatigue was a bad vehicle to feed her human needs make a huge difference for her.

Speaker 2

Oh, wow, I see that's great. That's interesting. And what are some common misconceptions about chronic pain management and how does your approach address these?

Speaker 3

I don't know if I'm going to be friend with a physician, but the medicine today is only focused on symptoms and chronic pain is often just the tip of the iceberg and there is other things under and go to the root cause of the chronic pain. You know, for example, at the clinic we use thermography. We do a thermography scan of the body from the head to the toe and we can see that some patients had the lower back completely flared up. You know, really red with high temperature and the upper back completely blue Because the upper back doesn't do the job. You ask to the lower back to do the job and people will come with chronic lower back pain because the upper back is not doing the job.

Integrated Approach to Health and Wellness

Speaker 3

And our vision of things at the clinic is really to understand the the patient from the head to the toe but at the same time on the mindset side and on the chronic, on the nutrition side. Because we had a patient few weeks ago came here and he has pain like crazy. It was just impossible to touch him and I said that's okay, talk to me about your day. You know what do you do every day, you know, and this patient was I do a resume, but he was drinking two liters of Coca-Cola every day.

Speaker 2

Oh, my goodness.

Speaker 3

And I said you don't drink water? He said no. And I said why? He said because when I was young I was living in a small city and the water was not always good to drink but Coca-Cola was good to drink. And yeah, right. And I say okay, you connected security and Coca-Cola. But nowadays, you know, you live in a bigger city, the water is good, you don't need to drink Coke, you know. But inflammation level was so high that we, you know he was in pain because he was drinking Coke with full of sugar and chemical inside. Then he was inflamed all the time. And it's really how we, we work at the clinic it's not looking at the symptom but look at the root cause of the problem. And for him, his chronic pain was more a nutrition issue right.

Speaker 2

Yeah, we definitely need to pay attention to what we're putting in our body. I I had a client. She says I'm very anxious, and I was trying to ask her what her day was like. And she says well, I drink 10 cups of coffee a day. I said well, that could be why you're anxious.

Speaker 3

Might want to cut down Right.

Speaker 2

Right, exactly how do mindset and emotional well-being impact physical health and, in particular, in the context of chronic pain?

Speaker 3

If I go back to Dr Hammer with his study in the 1970s, everyone was thinking he was crazy Because you know, it's just.

Speaker 3

Everyone was thinking that the heaviness was coming from the outside and he was saying no, it's the answer of the brain to a stress is going to create a illness.

Speaker 3

And at the beginning we didn't have this scientific connection about, ok, the brain can create something in the body, okay, the brain can create something in the body. But in the past few years, with epigenetics, and understood that, because for a year we were thinking that 80 percent of all genetics was gen DNA. But we understood that this gen DNA is the most important thing in the body because it's the small switch which is going to activate the production of the right protein in the body. And now we understood that the brain and the emotional state can influence your junk DNA, can influence your junk DNA or not. The junk DNA, because you know the 80% of your DNA is going to create the right production of protein in the body. And it's why we can see how the mindset or the mood are going to create some illness or some physical problem, because the brain has the ability to make the body code certain type of protein.

Speaker 2

I see, okay, that makes sense. And then, in your opinion, what is the most overlooked aspect of health in conventional medicine today?

Speaker 3

We are not looking at. I don't know if I'm going to be friends again with the pharmaceutical company, but the pharmaceutical company doesn't make money when you are in good health.

Speaker 3

They make money when you are sick. Of course, then at the end the conventional medicine would have a really big connection with the pharmaceutical company. Are not looking to keep you healthy Emergency system to try to stop illness, but we have no. You know, each time we talk about prevention, nobody cares Looking at the magic pills to try to save your headache or things like that. But the the issue for me, for the conventional medicine, is just looking at the sample and working as an emergency. It's okay, we need to do something now, but we are not looking at keep you healthy. If you look at chinese medicine, in china, your chan, your, your, your physician is coming to see you every month and you pay him every month. But if you begin to be sick, he will come every day and it will be free.

Speaker 2

Why.

Speaker 3

Because his job is to keep you healthy.

Speaker 1

If you fall.

Speaker 3

If you are sick, it's because he didn't do his job. And if he didn't do his job, you don't need to pay him. And that's a big difference between the occidental medicine and the other way to see things. And in our country we are looking too much when it's too late, we don't do any preventive action. And because there is a lobby and people want to make money on the health of people, yeah, they definitely do.

Speaker 2

Yes, I was just talking about that the other day. They don't. I hate to say this. They'd rather have a sick than well, because it would be more money for them who are sick, unfortunately. How do you personalize treatment plans for your clients? And then, what role does technology play in your online program?

Speaker 3

online program we do at the clinic. We have a way to work a little bit different. We do free evaluation. When the patient is coming in for the first time, we do free evaluation to see, one, if we can help them and two, how we are going to help them. And we work as a team with carotid massage, soft tissue specialist osteopath to really see the patient at the beginning, to work as a team. And when we do the free evaluation, we assess.

Speaker 3

You know, for example, if someone's coming from for back pain, if he's an office worker, we are going to have a specific online program for office worker to help them about stress or about working station. You know how to set up your working station. He will have a specific snack that he can use during the day healthy snack and we are going to set up his online programs specifically for him to send him the online program he needs. We are not going to just say, okay, you have back pain, that's your program. Depending what you do, we'll change or tweak a few things to help him.

Speaker 3

Often the exercise for back pain is often the same. You know we are not going to lie. 95% of the patients need the same programs for the stretching or for massage guns for motor. We are really strong on core exercise, stretching and relaxing technique. But after outside with the workstation or how to help the patient to lift heavy weight in the right position, we have specific programs for that. And on the nutrition side, as I said, we are really strong on the anti-inflammatory diet and we are going to adapt the diet depending on what the patient can eat some allergy or things like that to really have his own plan all together.

Speaker 2

Oh, wow, that's really great. And then, what challenges have you faced in integrating such diverse fields and how have you overcome them?

Speaker 3

Yeah, On the technology side, it was hard to find a platform where we can communicate. We are really strong on communication with our clients. We have a texting system 24-7. Then people can text and reach out to us, because I think we need to be when the patient is leaving the clinic. We still need to be with him or her, we need to be close to them and be able to answer their question and we have a team 24-7 working on that and we can answer when people need.

Speaker 3

And on the technology side was our platform can help us to do that and at the end, we developed our own platform where we have the online programs, the communication side, the email all together to really have that together. And on the content side, as a physiotherapist and osteopath, I have a lot of knowledge about exercise, physiology and doing the exercise was, or doing the program. Exercise was not too hard. I was lucky to do have my coaching certification then on the mindset side was pretty easy to do. At the same time, we work with psychologists to to do specific programs and on the nutrition side, we have connection with nutritionists who are doing our online programs.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I was going to ask you about that. That you do have nutritionists, that's great.

Speaker 3

Yep, yep, yep. We leverage knowledge and technology for that.

Speaker 2

Oh great. And how long is a patient usually at your clinic, Like how long do they stay with you guys? Just curious.

Speaker 3

We do a path to recovery. The program is a six weeks program and what we say we improve the condition of the patient by 80% in the six weeks and after the six weeks maybe there will be an ongoing care. Then people will come back when they need. Some patients need more than six weeks. But we really see, with the program we do, we improve significantly the condition of the patient in the first six weeks.

Speaker 2

Okay, so if somebody listening because your practice is in New Brunswick, right, so let's say somebody from the States maybe they're retired or they have a lot of time to spare and they could come to your place for six to eight weeks, would you allow that for them just to come, or yeah, we can do that, but at the same time, can we have an online component of the program? Oh, do you. Okay, you can do it online okay we can help people from anywhere in okay, okay, okay, that's great.

Speaker 2

So the listeners know, but if they wanted to just come and check it out and like benefit with a massage or whatever, they could do that somebody yeah, we can combine the the treatment plan for six weeks.

Speaker 3

So if someone is coming from far, we will try to condense that for that for four weeks with a specific, then after they can go back to their own practitioner and and have the follow-up. You, you know, we can communicate with other therapists to help them do the same things close to their house.

Speaker 2

Right, oh, that's really great. And how do you stay updated with the latest research and developments in your field? And then how do they influence your practice?

Speaker 3

PubMed. You know I'm reading I don't know how many articles every week. I have specific alerts when there is an article on physical health or inflammation or mindset. You know all that Together we stay up to date with the last study coming in. You know, I really like to be sure that it's backed up by science, because you know you can read a lot of things on the internet. You can go on Google if you want, you know. But yeah, we have some membership to specific websites with the last study, you know.

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And that's the way we go to some events and some conference. You know, always try to stay up to date about what's going on in other fields too.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah, definitely. Wow, that's great. And then, what advice do you have for individuals seeking to improve their health, but feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of information available?

Speaker 3

I think, as I said, too many made shifts. You know you don't need to change everything. You know, we, we saw every year year the first of January, all the gyms are full of people and you have a line to go to the gym because everyone say, okay, it's the new year, I'm going to eat better, I'm going to go to the gym, I'm going. You know, and they want to do too many things that at the end, as you say, they are overwhelmed and in February everyone is in the coach eating chips. You know, because they can't do everything at the same time, for me, just do a little tweak. You know.

Speaker 3

I think the easy one is the nutrition. You try to be able to see what's going to create more inflammation in your system. You know, processed food, dairy products, sugar, are often one of the key of inflammation and just reducing the inflammation can make a huge difference in your everyday life. And it's going to be a compound interest. It's not going to be a compound interest. You are not going. It is not going to change. I stopped eating sugar Monday and Tuesday. I can run a marathon, it's not like that. But have patience and stick with the new habits. And I don't know if people read this book called Atomic Habits where he's talking about how to stack habits. You know, for example, you do. You know you brush your teeth every day and during you want to add some exercise. You can do some squat at the same time. You know just. You know just, add things at what you already do.

Speaker 3

And my biggest advice for people who think they are overwhelmed is do one things, at least one, and from that you will see in a week how you feel. You know it's. You know it's not because you are going to work 30 minutes Monday and you will lose 10 pounds Friday, you, but if you, you know, if you stick with your habits and keep going and have some patience. But many people are looking for the magic pills and it's one of the issue. We have, you know, one's instant gratification and our brain is wired like that. But stick with your habits.

Speaker 2

Right, cause it sounds like your practice. You're trying to change people's lives for the better and then they can have a healthy lifestyle like that for the rest of their life, whereas if they just went on Ozempic or something, it's just you know, you're not learning how. Even if you went off Ozempic, how do I eat? You know what do I eat now and how do I take care of myself? Yeah, that's interesting. You know what do I eat now and how do I take care of myself? Yeah, that's interesting. I'm just curious what foods have you noticed? Just being in this field seem to help people Do you have any or do you want to share?

Speaker 3

I do food with omega-3, you know, like avocado or things like that. You know I'm not a big fan of salmon because the salmon is staying too long in the water and it can be full of heavy metal and it's hard to find wild salmon. You know the farm salmon are full of omega-6 and omega-6 increase the inflammation.

Speaker 2

Yes.

Speaker 3

Fruits, nuts, vegetables. I was vegan for a time but for many reasons I can't stay under a vegan diet. I think grass-fed you know be able to be aware of where it's come from make a huge difference. You know about the food.

Speaker 2

Sure, I eat a lot of broccoli. Is that good? Oh, yeah, yeah yeah, that's good, good, okay, but then I I was talking with.

Speaker 3

I will not remember his name oh, that's okay, no worries and he was saying that if you eat the broccoli or any vegetable over 40 degrees, you begin to break the value. And him and he was really strong on raw vegan diet. Oh right, yeah. It's a very specific one.

Speaker 2

Exactly, yeah, right, and so people can find you on your website. What is your website?

Speaker 3

It's marcusocliniccom.

Speaker 2

Okay, We'll have it in the show notes and then also people can go there and they can either go directly to your clinic. But then you said that you offer things online, right?

Speaker 3

Yeah, yeah, we will do an evaluation of the patient online, you know, because we can, we have some. I'm really strong on posture. For me, posture is one of the keys to improve health. You know, it's like the foundation of your house and we can do online, have a free evaluation. People can book that online and from that we can decide okay, with what you have. That's the best path to recover from what you have.

Speaker 2

Okay, I see. So yeah, that sounds great. Where can people find you on social media?

Speaker 3

We have Facebook, Instagram, Monk of the Tunic, okay. We have TikTok too, I think.

Speaker 2

Oh, wow, okay.

Speaker 3

And LinkedIn.

Speaker 2

Okay, great so yeah, we'll put that in the show notes too. So, I know sometimes with Apple you can do it, but I think on some of them they might not be able to put it in the notes or something. I'm not sure which platforms it could be, like Amazon or something so I just thought I'd ask you. Yeah, and then our tagline for the Electric Spirit podcast is igniting your spirit. How do you ignite your spirit?

Speaker 3

Learning? Yeah, you, how do you ignite your spirit? Learning? Yeah, you know I'm an avid learner reading, I'm listening to audiobooks all the time, you know, when I walk or when I drive, you know, I was listening to Jim Rohn, I think, and he was saying that he called his car his mobile university, and it's the right time to learn things. You know, when I'm driving, I always have a notepad close to my seat because always things coming in, you know, and, yeah, my, I'm a happy learner and I think that's the way I keep keep my brain in it and my spirit in it.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I forgot. Do you have a book or not?

Speaker 3

Did you write a?

Speaker 2

book.

Speaker 3

I'm working on a book where I spoke about my discovery from the physical side, adding the mindset and adding the nutrition. You know I follow my path. Okay, but I didn't finish it. It's on the nutrition. You know I follow my path Okay. But I didn't finish it.

Speaker 2

It's on the way. Okay, it's on the back burner, but maybe when you release it, I'd love to have you back.

Speaker 3

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Yeah, that would be great and I'm so glad you're here. I don't know if you want to add anything else for the audience before we go.

Speaker 3

No, I think I I you know the question you said he was the right one, you know. Yeah, I, I talk about everything I wanted to talk, yeah, and I would like to see more therapists have more holistic approach, yeah, and really see more teamwork in clinics, you know, and not just therapists working in the same area, but really work as a team.

Speaker 3

Right and I think that that's really something we need to. We need to improve in the health landscape. It's the ability to understand that everyone has his own specialty and not not everyone is better than someone else. It's just act as a team at the beginning will help the patient way more than do some carol and after two months do something else. You know, just work as a team at the beginning and understood.

Speaker 2

Then we need to focus on the outcome for the patient and not only on the outcome for the money side for the clinic right, exactly, you know, it sounds like a very caring environment, that a person would feel safe to go in there, like they're being taken care of, because I know sometimes you know, when even I go to the doctor they have to hurry up and rush you out of there. So your approach is just really remarkable. So thank you so much. Yeah, I appreciate you and thank you for being here today.

Speaker 3

Thanks for inviting me.

Speaker 2

Thank you so much.
