Welcome to Resurrection Sunday. As we celebrate Easter today and the day that Christ rose from the grave and that God raised him out of the tomb. What a glorious day that we can look back on and celebrate today. That uh as believers in Jesus we know that he was the Messiah as God raised him just as he said he would, just as the scriptures were fulfilled. Just as Jesus prophesied that he would be raised and he would raise himself on the third day. What a joy it is to look at that today and to study that today. And we're gonna study that uh in Matthew, Luke, and John today. All three won't read out of Mark today, but certainly. Uh as I always encourage you to study all four of the gospel accounts. So Matthew chapter twenty-eight today, Mark chapter sixteen, Luke chapter twenty-four, and John chapter twenty verses one through twenty-five. Um we'll all cover Resurrection Day as you study the Gospels to pick up and jump in just straight in in Matthew twenty-eight, uh starting in verse one. It says, Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, do not be afraid. For I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has risen. Just as he said. Come, see the place where he was lying. Go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. Behold, I have told you. And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him. And Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid, go and take word to my brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see me. In verse eleven, it says, Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priest all that had happened. And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers and said, You were to say his disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep. And if this should come to the governor's ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble. And they took the money and did as they had been instructed. And this story was widely spread among the Jews and is to this day. What a glorious day that we can look at as as the two Marys come and find the empty tomb and then see Jesus just as a as they're reaffirming, after they hear from the angel, and then go to tell the disciples. And I think it's neat that Jesus instead still sat down and met him along the way. Um how awesome that is before they go to tell the disciples. You know, as as we turn and and and look and not to read out of it, look at John chapter twenty of of Peter and John running to the tomb after getting word from Mary to go see the empty tomb and the facecloth that was still laying where his head had been, and the linen wrappings still still there and rolled up in a place by their self, as it says. Um they see that and and uh see the empty tomb and um in verse eight of chapter twenty, and John it says, So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, which means John, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away to their own home. So John and Peter uh race to the tomb. Uh John stops before he goes in. Peter comes up behind him and goes straight in, and then John follows him in. They see the the linen wrappings, they see the clothes, the burial clothes that Jesus was in laying there, um, but obviously no body, and that he was raised, and then they go back to their house and go back home. Uh and maybe still not completely fully understanding. Uh it says that John believed, but maybe Peter had uh not completely fully understanding what had happened. Uh in Luke 24, uh where it records the subtitle, The Road to Emmaus, uh, is another explanation of that, and and we'll read verses thirteen through uh uh through thirtieth here, and it says, And behold, two of them were going that uh uh going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they were walk they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. And he said to them, What are these words that you were exchanging with one another as you were walking? And they stood still, looking sad. One of them named Cleopaths answered and said to him, Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of these things which have happened here in these days? And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things about the Jesus about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet, mighty indeed and word, and in the sight of God and all the people. And how the chief priest and our rulers delivered him to the sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he is that it was he who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as found it just exactly as the women had also said. But him they did not see. And he said to them, O foolish men and slow of heart, to believe in all that the prophets have spoken. Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, he explained to them the things concerning himself and all the scriptures. And they approached the village where they were going, and he acted as though he were going farther. But they urged him, saying, Stay with us, for it is getting towards evening, and the day is now nearly over. So he went in to stay with them. When he would when he had reclined at the table with them, he took bread and blessed it, and breaking it, he began giving it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. They said to one another, Were our were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking to us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us. And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem and found gathered and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, saying, The Lord really has risen and has appeared to Simon. They began to relate their experiences on the road and how he had recognized by them in the breaking of bread, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. Again, just another amazing uh time of Jesus as he's risen from the dead, walking with these with these two along the road, explaining still the scriptures that point to him, the scriptures we have in front of us that point back to Christ, as we can read through the prophets that point to Jesus, the Messiah, and all of the prophecies that he fulfilled in his life through his resurre through his crucifixion and resurrection. He's explaining it to them just as we can read through and he's explaining it to us in his living word that we're all so blessed to have right in front of us. And in John chapter 20, verse 19. It says, So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, they were closed up, they were still in fear of the Jews, and you can imagine they'd walked with Christ for three years, and uh all the things that had happened, and though he is risen and he's empty, they're still in fear of the Jews. It says Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. And when he had said this, he showed them both his hands and his side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. So they had been with Jesus, they were used to him being there. Their strength, just as ours is, was in him. As he had been crucified, he was in the tomb. They were in fear. They were in fear of the Jews, they were locked inside their houses. So as he appeared back to them, their strength again is in him, and their joy to see him, their risen Lord. Our entirety of the Christian faith is built on the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead. He conquered death. The wages of sin is death, and he conquered that on the cross. He paid for our sin, a debt that we couldn't pay. He went into the tomb, he fulfilled every prophecy. And he was raised on the third day, raised to life, just as we are raised to life in him and in him alone. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through him. Only in him can we have salvation. Only in believing in him and believing in the resurrection that he was raised. If you don't believe he was raised from the dead, you don't believe in the Messiah, Jesus Christ, that died for your sin. He was raised by God on the third day. He appeared back to the disciples. He appeared to others, and we're gonna look at the others that he appeared to before he ascended into heaven over the next uh uh we're gonna look at tomorrow as we finish out this study. Um we'll close today at this for resurrection Sunday. Uh again, we'll pick up tomorrow on Monday and and look at um the next forty days uh that Jesus appeared to the disciples and others and many uh before he ascended into heaven as he appeared to them as as the resurrected Messiah. I hope you all have enjoyed this study this week as as much as I have, and and again I just encourage you to jump in, read in uh every day it's been of what to cover and what and then what to leave out, and it still got a little longer in places than I had planned. Um so I encourage you again, jump into all four gospels and and read and study and let the Lord speak to you. What a glorious day this is we get to celebrate. We get to celebrate our Lord and Savior and what he did for me, for you, and for all who put their faith and trust in him and his resurrection that we're celebrating today. God bless y'all, we love y'all. Happy Easter. Thank you, Jesus. For going to the cross. For fulfilling all the scripture, all the prophecies, as just as it was fordained, for being raised on the third day, conquering death, conquering sin, conquering the issues that we can't, Lord. Just thank you so much. We celebrate this day in your name. Amen.
