Wake Up
Embracing the Gender Spectrum
The dividing lines between masculine and feminine energy are blurring as humanity evolves, creating what some perceive as confusion but what Dr. Douglas James Cottrell identifies as spiritual opportunity. Drawing on four decades of intuitive wisdom, Dr. Cottrell explains how we're witnessing a profound transition from dominant masculine energies (control, aggression, authority) toward more feminine creative powers (receptivity, nurturing, intuition).
What appears as gender confusion to many observers actually represents a misunderstanding about the nature of consciousness itself. Those expressing gender diversity aren't confused—they're often courageous souls who've chosen challenging paths for spiritual growth while simultaneously offering learning opportunities to others. Our emotional reactions to those who appear different reveal our own spiritual development level, as what triggers us emotionally in others exists within ourselves.
Dr. Cottrell draws fascinating parallels to ancient spiritual traditions that honored those with differences rather than marginalizing them. Like the biblical rejected stone that becomes the cornerstone, those who don't fit neatly into societal expectations often become catalysts for transformation and expanded consciousness. The most evolved response to encountering differences isn't judgment but curiosity and compassion—recognizing that these "unusual" individuals might actually be our greatest teachers.
Ready to expand your understanding of consciousness and compassion? This episode challenges you to examine your reactions to those who appear different and recognize the spiritual invitation they represent. Share your thoughts about how we might collectively grow through embracing rather than judging human diversity.

Douglas James Cottrell:You're listening to the Wake Up with Dr Douglas, james Cottrell and Les Schubert, the show that explores the human consciousness and condition. Good evening, les. What do we have for tonight? What are we going to look at?
Les Hubert:Well, we've got a few subjects, doug, but the first and foremost is the reason why there's so much gender confusion these days. People just want to know what's going on. Is it because we're now exploring the feminine energies of the divine, or is it just what's going on? Is it because we're now, you know, exploring the feminine energies of the divine, or is it just you know what's happening? What's your take on that?
Douglas James Cottrell:Well, it's true, there is, through the grapevine, I've been told that we're moving into the influences, more to the feminine aspects of the amplification through, you know, all those things we can say, the influences around us in nature. So, as we move towards that understanding, uh explore that uh femininity, the uh consciousness, the creative power. Uh, we move away from the masculine. But there's this conflict back and forth. You know there's a struggle and that is, uh, you know, the masculine energy which wants to be in control and it wants to uh take charge. All the time uh has to acquiesce to the more creative, um, more, I guess you could say, softer, feeling, sensing and more sentient beings are coming forward and taking positions in the world that were traditionally assigned to men, but naturally they are now, as the yin and the yang and the pendulum swings back and forth, the women are coming forward, they're being more assertive, in a very feminine way, they are taking positions of leadership all over the world, not just in the US of A, but all over the world, not just in the US of A, but all over the world, and more scholars and more poems and more movies and more influences coming through from this passive, feminine creativity. Remember, we refer to Earth as Mother Earth and the idea that creation always has a mother, that motherly influence to grow things, make things, develop things. So in the world today, it's no wonder that we see more of the feminine energy coming forward. Now again, this is a time between the two extremes, it's a transitional time. So there's this confusion, but also there are those people who have been caught up and locked into bodies that are halfway between male and female, and this gender confusion, if we can call it that in a physical sense, must be extremely distressing for people who are caught up in that particular form or body. The other side of that is the misunderstanding or the people who have no comprehension of this condition that's going on. But it's like saying you know, you're the tallest person in the school and everybody else is shorter, and they're wondering look at that person over there. They're so tall. What's the matter with them? It's all their fault. They shouldn't be tall, we should do something about it. Why that's the way they are? Conversely, there's a short person in the school or the hospital or the office and everybody's looking. Look how short they are. I wonder what happened to them. Oh, my gosh. Well, put the brakes on them, you go. This is not their problem, not their fault, it's the way it is.
Douglas James Cottrell:So, as we move through this attempt to understand, as we're moving away from more of the might makes right and the masculine, assertive, aggressive energy to more of the passive, receptive and creative energy, we have this period. This time it's a transitional time in which there is confusion. Now, more intelligent, more sentient people, more feeling, if you will, for the person that's out there. You know when something happens to somebody that's bad and you feel for them. Well, that's a spiritual indication of how high you are. You're feeling, sensing, becoming aware of that other person. You're showing compassion and understanding. You're showing spiritual intelligence. And as you move forward from that point of view, then you begin to be consciously aware. You explore the greater consciousness, that part that nobody can really define what human consciousness is. But you get to that understanding slowly because you see, the more intelligent you are, the more spiritual intelligent you are, the more you know that you do not know. That's the secret on that one. But the people who think they know it all, they have it down. It's right, it's this, it's that. Nature is not that way at all. Nature is chaotic. You look at the Fibonacci principles and you'll see that there is this mathematical principle that at first looks like it's chaotic and random, but it's not, it's exact. And so what's going on with this transition? This confusion, if you will, is in the mind of those who are not spiritually aware. They're showing their spiritual poverty, their misunderstanding, and to those that are going through the process, they're wondering. And they're growing, they're learning to accept themselves as being unusual. But in this time, this creative time, this is happening more often because it is. We're going through an evolution. You know, we're growing as a human nature, as human beings in nature, and as such, we're going to have these, let's say, let's call them little dead ends, where we go down a certain way in evolution and we stop and we keep going another way until we get it right. But overall, I would take this, if my intuition is, this is an evidence of how great we are becoming our, our consciousness is expanding.
Douglas James Cottrell:Now, in some religions there's a masculine and feminine and the idea that, as you move towards spiritual illumination or ascension or self-awareness, you blend the female and the male energies together. Lord Shiva, for instance, is a combination of masculine and feminine Looks. Feminine is masculine and somewhat is both. So what is God? What gender is God? Well, god is not a gender. God is God. What is God? Well, there you go. He got me. Well, I got an opinion. God is like electricity. God is like lightning. God is this energy around us all the time. And this energy, this creative energy, this light, these are all aspects of God. Well, the same within us, all these expressions of our human consciousness, our human being, our physical demeanor, our physical abilities and the aspects of our size, tall, short, thick, thin, etc. Etc. Those are expressions of that human consciousness.
Douglas James Cottrell:Who's to question what's right? Who's to say what's wrong? Who's to say this is better, that's wrong, that's right. No one should do that. I mean, the idea is that we have this consciousness that expands and expands and expands. And as we come to that point of why is there confusion?
Douglas James Cottrell:The summary of this is the confusion is in the mind of those people who are observing and can't comprehend or understand difference To the people who are going through this.
Douglas James Cottrell:They understand, it's the way they are.
Douglas James Cottrell:I mean, I'm six foot tall. When I was going through school I was taller than most everybody else, but did I think I was a freak, that I was something different. No, I was just taller. And the same for people who were just smaller or some that were a little bit roly-poly. There's always that person in school and the bottom line was who's right, who's wrong? What is it what's wrong? Well, we can judge them and say that guy should be thinner, eating too many chocolate bars, or something else about this person or that person. And of course it's all subjective, it's all extremely prejudiced, it's all opinionated and it isn't accurate. So the confusion is in the mind of those people who can't comprehend the differences in people. And when they take it into emotion, remember we teach that what you see in other people to the same emotional degree that you see that in somebody else, you own it yourself. So are you afraid of your gender? You know, maybe you're a big, strong-looking person and you have weaknesses and you don't want people to know about it.
Douglas James Cottrell:So what do you do? You blame somebody else. Sure, if you are spiritually impoverished at this, if you are spiritually aware, you go like, hmm, that's interesting, I never came across that before. So let's find out about this thing, what's in the mind of somebody else and say, hey, what's it like. I remember when I was a kid there was somebody going up to a great big, tall basketball player and saying what's the weather like up there?
Douglas James Cottrell:We've all heard that. Well, it's because we're attempting to understand or comprehend somebody else's perspective, which is okay. We're attempting to blossom, to grow the human consciousness. So why is there confusion? It's because there is ignorance.
Advertisement:There is darkness.
Douglas James Cottrell:When you go and ask somebody, how does it feel to be like you? Well, that's a bit of an intrusion. Who are you to go and ask somebody about themselves? That's like somebody coming in and say why are you green? You know, or why, do you like apples? You know?
Douglas James Cottrell:what I mean, and so it's kind of like saying, like hi, how are you? Let's find out about this person Usually people that are unusual in name or shape or size or whatever there is about them, they are usually extra special people. When we look at children with handicaps, mongoloid children, children that are otherwise physically challenged, we should be honoring them Because they have the courage to go through an experience. It's going to be very difficult and most of the most of the ancestral worship here and some of these long-term religions in the world, always, always, always, when somebody was invalid I'm talking about physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually when they were challenged, they were taken care of by the tribe. They were honored. There was something special about that person and to help them was a spiritual privilege.
Douglas James Cottrell:Oh wow. Maybe we ought to take a lesson from back then and put it now and say when we see somebody it's a little unusual, maybe they're a little challenged or maybe they're a little in difficulty, maybe it's our spiritual test that they're coming forward and offering us an opportunity to be spiritual. Think about that, my friends. You're in the wake up. We'll be right back after a short message.

Announcer:Did you get his new age health guide too?
Douglas James Cottrell:Yep, right here. Good, my turn to read. Okay, everybody, we're back. So here we looking at uh, this idea of why is there confusion and why is there some confounding uh experiences with people who don't really know what's going on with their gender situation. And our solution tonight less is that, it's the person's not knowing that's driving their reaction to this confusion. So the person going through it, it's a learning situation and they should be proud that they're going through an unusual lifetime, because that usually means they're making big time, big steps in their spiritual evolution.
Les Hubert:So, in other words, from a spiritual standpoint, if you objectify and back out because you mentioned before just previously, Doug, that this person chose to come into this experience from the other side, Do you feel it's because they, as you mentioned, to give us a chance, an opportunity to have a spiritual experience, to grow spiritually in order to accept this person as who they are?
Douglas James Cottrell:Exactly. I mean, it's better to be an observer and learn than to be the person who is going through the experience their shoulder. You are gaining more information and more experience by watching than actually being there and nervous and trying to figure things out as you're driving forward in the car. Everybody's had that experience. They say thank God, you were driving, I learned a lot, you know, and so that's the way it is. In this situation, if you can learn from observing people, if you can comprehend, because you, you know. It's like that game, solitaire. You know the cards right, you're looking over somebody's shoulder, you can see all the mistakes oh, you missed that card, oh, this one but the person doing the uh, the game itself is preoccupied and they're focused, whereas the person observing is, let's say, multi-focused, they have a grander view. So I agree with you. The idea is, if you can back away, back up and then assess what's going on, you're going to learn a lot.
Les Hubert:So, because that's pretty much why we're here, I remember in previous readings you had said don't pray for the thing, but pray for the opportunity to gain that thing, which would be, in this case, spiritual understanding. So how brave it is for that person to come in. I mean, the downside is we might judge them wrongfully, but how brave a soul to come in to, to take on that role of a, of a person that we would see some people would see us confused, when they're not. They're just trying to give us an opportunity to grow. I mean, that's pretty, pretty brave of them exactly.
Douglas James Cottrell:It's a spiritual karma, it's a spiritual life. It's a spiritual karma, it's a spiritual life, it's a spiritual evolution. And who's to say that that person, who's the outcast, isn't the teacher they're teaching us. And that person is special. I mean, in the good book it talks about the cornerstone. It talks about the Messiah or the spiritual person being the stone that doesn't fit in. So what do they do? They make it the cornerstone and build the entire temple based on that stone.
Douglas James Cottrell:That was irregular shape. And this is how we should see things. When we see people that are different, we should go and embrace that and say there's something I don't know about. Let me find out about this. How does that relate to me? Where's my strengths? Where's my weaknesses? Where's my understanding? My gosh, I just learned something. That person can do amazing things Poetry, music, artwork, mathematics, scientists. They can explore the great beyond, because their level of consciousness naturally is different and, I guess, evolved. It's like somebody that's ambidextrous. You know, when you see them they are a little, maybe confused. You know they have this war going inside between the left and the right side of their body being stronger, but they're ambidextrous. They can use both hands equally. Can you do that? No? Well then, they're special and you're not. You're in the wake up. Listen up, you're in the wake up, my friends.
Les Hubert:Yeah, my question is did you ever see the movie Moneyball? I thought it was very interesting because he took I think it was they bought the Oakland A's and he took this team from nothing. He had a very limited budget and the reason why he got so far with the team was because he took these people that had problems, that had imbalances, and he used them to the most of their ability and took them right up to the limit. It was amazing. It was amazing and I thought to myself that you can apply that to life. I mean, and thank you so much for this understanding, because so many people have been so judgmental of these poor souls, these brave souls who are coming in and saying you know, I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to help you to grow spiritually and to see that there's more to it than just you're judging me. And of course, you know politics gets involved in that whole. But thank you so much for that insight, doug. I think it's going to help a lot of people.
Douglas James Cottrell:Well, remember, you're in the wake up. Wake up, these people that are in front of you are extra special people. Try to find out why these people that are in front of you are extra special people. Try to find out why Just because they're different doesn't mean that they're to be excluded. Include them in your life and you will learn more. You're listening to the Wake Up. This is Douglas, james Godrell and my good friend Les Schubert.
