Products With Purpose

#88 Eleonore Eisath - Beworm: Could Mircobes and Enzymes Help Solve our Plastic Problem?

Eli Harrell

In this episode of Products With Purpose, Eli spoke with Eleonore Eisath Founder of Beworm

Beworm is developing a biocatalytic recycling process that decomposes plastic waste into natural raw materials.

They isolate plastic-degrading bacteria from our beloved be(e)worms to degrade polyethylene, the world's most used plastic material. The enzymes produced by this bacteria split the plastics up into basic chemicals for the production of new (bio)plastics or other petrochemical products - creating an infinite, closed-loop system!

Eleonore Eisath is an ambitious dreamer with a passion for trash. She gained experience as a project manager for Everwave, a German startup removing plastics from rivers. She manages the Beworm team, talks to partners and customers, designs the communication channels, and works on the strategy.

Some of the highlights from this episode:

  • Discovering enzymes and microorganisms for plastic degradation is expanding rapidly, offering hope for a sustainable future
  • Unlocking the mechanism of plastic degradation offers industry opportunities for licensing and scaling up sustainable processes
  • Transforming food packaging: Overcoming contamination and regulatory barriers through innovative recycling solutions
  • Unlocking the potential of enzymatic recycling: Transforming plastic waste into high-quality materials
  • Financial journey: Securing grants, seeking investors for timely progress in plastic degradation
  • Embracing minimalism: Finding fulfillment beyond material possessions for a purpose-driven life
