Thank you for listening and Go M.A.D. today!

SPEAKER_02:

Welcome everyone to season five, episode one of Go Mad with Doug and Brandon. Season 19. I cannot believe each episode does not count in as a season. Oh man. Season five, episode one, Jesse's here with us, of course, as well as. Jesse. What's up? And I I just am we're coming off of summer here, and we are so ready to dive back in. Uh before we go any further, because we're gonna we're gonna get into what we're talking about and everything else. But Doug, people may be tuning in. I mean, new listeners last year, all that they may be tuning in for the first time. Who are we, Doug?

SPEAKER_01:

First of all, thanks thanks for listening. Because we we we get these little stats from um the places where we post the podcast. More people than ever were listening. Lots of y'all were finding us last year in uh we just had to. That's where we wanted to start it.

SPEAKER_02:

That's why I wanted to start with thank you for listening. Exactly. Exactly. There we go. So we both say there we go.

SPEAKER_01:

So much. Um, yeah, this is why we're here. Go to your Bible, go to your Bible app, 2 Corinthians 5 20. We are Christ's ambassadors. Uh get just just get this, okay? Uh as though God were making his appeal through us. What does that mean? We implore you, we beg you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. We've got a world of people without Jesus, without hope for this life or for the next. And through us, God is like grabbing onto people's legs, walking in the wrong direction, throwing them a life preserver, saying, get right with me. But he's doing it through us, through God's people, through believers. There are so many opportunities we have to be that representative for Jesus that we probably a lot of times don't even recognize or know. That's why we're here, is to help us see um what kinds of chances there are, what kind of opportunities there are to share Jesus, to be um Jesus' representative. And uh we hope, we pray that that's what this podcast is for you.

SPEAKER_02:

And if you've never tuned in before, you'll quickly find out we like to have a lot of fun along the way when we do that as well. Uh we can be idiots, but uh we we uh can we look at this set.

SPEAKER_01:

What are you going?

SPEAKER_02:

Tagline Idiots with truth. How about that? Uh we're gonna take it.

SPEAKER_00:

Very catchy. And season five, that's Jesse's in my podcast. Historically, season five is always the best season of every show. Yeah, you can look it up. It's look it up. You can saw it on the internet, I believe. No, I I didn't, but it's probably there somewhere.

SPEAKER_02:

It's there. So, and as we're kicking off, I love that we get to kick off in the fall season because the cooler temps. I mean, look, the cooler temps that we have outside right now, right? And the Yankees heading to the World Series right now, right?

SPEAKER_01:

Neither one is true. What? Neither one is true. I would have believed you if you need to. I would have believed you. There's something called the news. Oh. You want to tune in every now and then, especially if you're you know gonna be on a podcast.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, we're recording this and it's like lower 80s still, and uh but it's no good. It's mid-October, everyone, and here we are. So it is uh there's a lot of stuff that you see around the fall, the the fall stands and everything else. You go into stores and there's just fall stuff everywhere.

SPEAKER_00:

That's right. Every store loves fall things, and some stores like Halloween things more than other stores. For instance, Home Depot. Um, I guess because there's no real big holidays between like Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, you gotta fill it in with something. So the Halloween uh decorations come out pretty early. Oh, yeah. And Home Depot really, man, if anybody does Halloween, it's it's Home Depot. There's a whole section that you just don't want to bring your kids by, not only because it's scary to look at, it's because as you walk by, they're emotion detected and they're gonna they're gonna jump out of you and they're gonna say something to you. And I was in Home Depot uh a few weeks ago, and I witnessed, I think there was a parent who was getting some kind of glee out of seeing his child like not really sure about these Halloween decorations, and then all of a sudden one of them like said something and he was like, ah!

SPEAKER_01:

Don't we all love that when our children are terrified?

SPEAKER_00:

Well, I I heard one of them, uh, this big tall uh I don't know, scarecrow or something, and uh in this creepy voice it said something like, I've been looking for you for a long time. And I was to the little kid if not Oh no. If nothing else, uh at least I think Home Depot understands how fear works, generally speaking, for most of us.

SPEAKER_02:

I would say that not only has that child not slept since then, Jesse hasn't. All right. Yep. It's been and that's really we actually uh it's what a koinky dink because uh we are talking today about fear and faith, because really, I I I I want to zoom out for just a second because fear is such a real topic, it is one of the things that the devil uses constantly to try to distract us and everything. And yes, there is that fear around this time of year, obviously, and and that's fueled by a lot of movies and decorations and everything else. But we live in a pretty fearful world. There's a lot of people. When you look at the news stories of just the past few weeks and you see things happening in the news that we never thought would be possible, when you see the violence, when you see the the anger people have, when you see people saying, I don't know if I feel safe going out in a crowd anymore. Fear is a very real thing in today's world. And that's why I want to talk about it and hit it head on.

SPEAKER_01:

With believers, too. There's so much, man, just from COVID to financial fears, the politics, the violence, there's just it's real with the kids that are are wandering from the faith. There is so much that we can be fearful about. We can spend our day, all day, every day, fearing. Listen to this. So so I looked up a couple of uh stats on this. So uh, based on recent surveys and psychological research, the average American spends approximately two hours and 18 minutes each day worrying or thinking about fears. Um, worry and fear-based thinking are significant components of the estimated 80% of daily thoughts that are negative. Um and there are it it's especially true for younger people. The same survey noted that younger generations report higher levels of anxiety. 62% of Gen Z and millennials say they're in a constant, a constant state of worry. Talk about being a representative, an ambassador of Christ. These we have a responsibility and an opportunity to say, as a believer, you don't have to be living in anxiety. You don't have to be living in a state of fear. But first, we got to get that taken care of inside of us, right?

SPEAKER_02:

I'm gonna give a little teaser so people know where we're going. We're gonna talk a little bit about some of the causes of fear, but Isaiah 41, 10 says, fear not. The Bible talks about do not fear over a hundred.

SPEAKER_01:

One of those bottom line verses. I love those.

SPEAKER_02:

And it is and fear. Now you may be thinking, well, how can I fear not? We're getting there. We're getting there, but I so stick with us. Don't uh if you happen to tune out at this point, at least no fear not. God says fear not, but we're getting in practical ways how to combat fear.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, how do you guys let maybe let's start here? How do you define fear? What are we talking about? Are we just talking about being afraid walking into a dark room? Uh, to me, it's going through life, kind of like in this it always wondering when the other shoe is gonna drop. You know, not being able to enjoy life. That's kind of what you know, the Bible talks about a spirit of fear. We're gonna talk about this. That you we haven't been given a spirit of fear with Jesus. And we'll talk about that in a little bit as well. How specifically we can conquer a spirit of fear. But uh regularly kind of being convinced something bad is always just around the corner. We have news 24-7, we're all and news runs on bad news. That's where the ratings are. Um, always just around the corner. I might even call it we use this word cynicism. Just I always feel like something negative is gonna happen. I can't enjoy the mountains in my life because I know a valley is on the way.

SPEAKER_02:

For me, I would say the it goes along kind of with what you were saying. Fear to me is when something robs my feeling of peace. Where it is where joy robs. Yeah, and where all of a sudden it is feeling like kind of on edge, then where there's not peace about something you you don't know what's gonna happen. And so there's this fear that sets in. It's good, Brad. Use the word fear to describe fear. Um the other expert.

SPEAKER_00:

It's really that it's the it's the it's the fact of just that peace goes away. Jesse, what about you? Uh you know the old hymn writer uh Isaac Watts, like Joy of the World, he uh wrote something where he paired hope and fear as as uh um opposite emotions. They're both l uh uh expectations about the future defining how I live today. One is based on the good to come and one is based on the bad that might come. That's good. Um and and so it's something in the future that hasn't happened may happen, may not, but it's affecting how I live today.

SPEAKER_01:

Brad, you brought up the um that that fear is is a lot of time when our joy or our peace is being stolen from us. And of course, the the enemy, the devil, he comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He doesn't want us to feel in fact, um, so God's word says that that peace should be ruling in our hearts. Instead of having over two hours a day worrying and and having anxiety, um, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. Well, how how can we make that a reality? All these things that we fear, I was, you know, looking this up, uh, countries some of the top fears in a in a recent poll. Countries using nukes against us, our country becoming involved in another world war, people we love becoming ill or dying, not having enough money for the future. I've noticed this is all pretty much stuff we can't control. Yeah. Uh and I have been there. Uh I'm I haven't I haven't I don't even think I've told anyone this except my wife, but but we're on the podcast, I'm going to be transparent here. So when I turned 50, uh I noticed this about four years ago, I started having some uninvited visitors in my mind. I started worrying, I don't know what it was about that number. I always, when I was a little kid, I remember thinking like 50 was old. And and I don't think that anymore now. But but I started having worries about my family when I'm not around anymore. What happens if something, if I get hit early, a heart attack or whatever. And every time I'd hear about a death in the news, I'd start to worry about them again. I'm not talking about a healthy concern, like, hey, maybe I should cut out some of the refined sugars from my diet, but a growing burden I could not shake. Um, I took steps with the Lord. It probably was two hours or more. I mean, because I didn't sit there for hours and think about it, but it was like ever it seemed like every time that there was a uh uh something joyful happening, I was like, yeah, but what happens if if they have to face life without their dad and their husband? And uh I think those were like, you know, the Bible talks about with the full armor of God, the flaming arrows uh shot from the enemy. I think that those are arrows of fear a lot of time. I took steps with the Lord that we'll talk about in a little bit, and I'm I'm a lot better with it now. But the point remains there's so much in this life that can enslave us to fear, and I don't think that's too strong of a word. It enslaves us if we let it. If it's not one thing, it's another. And going through life this way is just so awful, it's tormenting. So uh, so we gotta figure out, especially how as as believers with the fear conqueror that we serve in Jesus, how do we get this fear out of our life?

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, so uh I think we actually uh will make a pretty quick turn here to um how we get that fear out of our lives. Because uh one of the things that um one of the places that I served as a missionary, um, it was fear was a big thing. It was kind of ingrained um in a lot of young people. And we would be driving them home uh from an event and they would start telling each other kind of different fear stories. And what I saw in that, what we saw, Doug, was that um all of a sudden they would be talking about fear and the fear would just keep building because they spent a lot of time focused on the fear and not the solutions of how to get rid of it. And so I think it I think we all can see it is a very real thing in today's world that there is fear about not just it used to just be more well, I mean, there's always fear, but the seasonal thing was the big thing, uh going into the stores, whatever else. And some of those fear things, even in stores and in the movies, have gotten so blatant because we have to keep pushing the limits of what's going to cause fear in us. So when I look at this, when I I what I learned in some of those situations of those drives home with some of the young people was like, hey, let's stop talking about fear and start talking about the antidote. Let's stop talking about the disease, let's start talking about the cure. And for me, you look at the the fact now I've heard some people say that uh, and I I did a little research on this because I honestly I shared this fact a few days ago and then was like seriously, we're researching like crazy.

SPEAKER_01:

I know we're really proud of us, right?

SPEAKER_02:

As Jesse said, best things don't never go. The season of research. I I looked up because people have said that fear not, do not be afraid is in the Bible 365 times. Wow. I don't think it's true. Uh I I've I've heard it. I went to research it. You started in Genesis. Don't be closing that. Well, I know I'll I'll be honest. I looked up other people who had looked into it, but I I was I looked it up and it's the but it is in there well over a hundred times as far as fear not, do not be afraid. And so God wants us to see this from his word and a couple of verses that stick out to me. Isaiah 41 10, these are such peace-bringing verses to me because of the the the prescription for victory here. It's a step we need to take, and then what we get to experience when we take it. So Isaiah 41 10, fear not, for I am with you. That's why. So we know we need to fear not because he's with you, and be not dismayed. He says Psalm 34, 4, I sought the Lord and he answered me. So that's our part, seeking the Lord and delivered me from all my fears. Not some, not a few, whatever else. It is all my fears. Psalm 27, 1. The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is my is the stronghold of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? And and one more here, Psalm 23, 4. Talk about fear. And even what you were just sharing, Doug, about just what hit when you when you turned 50. That I think that's very real for people. That that sense of mortality, and what am I going to do with my what about my loved ones? What do what do I do for this? Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear what? No evil. Why? For you are with me, because God is with us.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, the just love the word of God. You'll find us if you just started listening, um, sharing a lot of scripture. Not just because I've heard it the Bible called Life's Instruction Manual, and I like that. There, there, I there's great advice in it, but it's so much more. The word of God is alive and active. Uh, it's able to, it's a sword, the Bible says, that separates truth from lies. And and when when scripture, when you read it, you let it penetrate your heart, you pray through it, you spend time meditating on it, it can make a huge difference. That's why the Lord mentions it so much. God knows our tendency to fear, he has a lot to say about it in his word. He loves us. And if if you're listening right now, and whether it's a doctor's report or the balance in your checking account or a child that you're so worried about, the way their life is going, he loves us. He doesn't want us going through life terrified and in a state of anxiety. That's why he says, Don't be anxious about anything. Um he said, but by by prayer and petition, I love this. Um in Philippians, I believe. It says by prayer and petition, we bring our requests before God, and then he is our rear guide, our rear guard, and uh and gives us a peace that goes beyond all human understanding. Second Timothy 1 7, this is important because this is not this scripture. We're not just talking about here about the occasional boo. I'm a little I I I got worried for a minute. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, or in some in some translations, timidity. A lot of times the same thing, but of power. So these are the opposite words of fear. Power, love, discipline, the opposites of fear. So, what is a spirit of fear? To me, it's not it's not occasional lapses, like I said, but it's how you go through life. When's the other shoe gonna drop? Um, always, like I said, always convinced something negative is just around the corner.

SPEAKER_00:

So I recently came across these verses in my Bible reading in the book of Hebrews, chapter 2, verses 14 and 15. It says, Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, that's us, he himself, that's Jesus, likewise partook of the same things that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. I I I think maybe the fear of death uh might be the the greatest fear or one of the greatest fears that we humans experience. And what's so crazy about these verses is that Jesus defeated that fear not by sweeping it under the rug or by toning it down a notch, but by dying himself. And so he overcomes our greatest fear by walking through our fear ahead of us, uh paving the way for us to follow him. And that that takes a weight off my shoulders. I don't have to fear death because the one I'm trusting for eternal life has walked through death first. So that takes all of the pressure off of me to walk into this unknown uh without a guide.

SPEAKER_02:

Do you guys realize what you just covered there? So, Jesse, you talked about him going before us. Doug, you talked about Jesus as our rear guard. He is before us, he's behind us, he is as well. And he walks with us, he walks by he walks next to us, ahead of us. We don't have to worry about, we don't have to fear because whether it's what we're going into or what we might fear that's coming behind us or that's all around us, he is there. The word of God tells us that he is with us, whatever the circumstance.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, Jesse just brought up how it is it's Jesus and his his death, his resurrection. That means fear, if the fear of death can be conquered in a believer's life, we might take a last breath in this body, but then we're with him, we're alive forever. That's what this scripture, first John 4.18, and then we're gonna in just a minute, we're gonna talk about four ways to fight the fear monster. Uh, but first John 4.18 says perfect love casts out fear. So perfect love, the love we have from God, which is the perfect love, Jesus love, is is agape. You know, you've heard the three types of love. Agape, which means selfless love. So that kind of love focuses on the success and the needs of others before our own. So get this. The opposite of agape love is fear because fear comes from an unhealthy focus on ourselves. My emotion, my financial, my emotional, my spiritual needs first. We've seen what that can do in a marriage. Um, selfishness invites it in. And I can even get uglier when it infiltrates our service of God. Uh, we don't do, won't do hard things because we're afraid of losing prestige or power or money. So, all right, we've established that this is just ugly. Fear in our lives. Uh, so what are some things we can do to fight the fear monster? We we're all about uh we we always pray about this. We want on uh on Go Mad with Doug and Brad and Jesse. Uh that we we want to offer practical steps because that's the word of God. It's not just this spiritual off on a cloud somewhere. There is always in God's word practical steps um of how to battle it. First Peter 5, 7, cast your anxieties on him because he cares for you. How? How do we do it, guys? All right.

SPEAKER_02:

So, first of all, I think it's the we go to that we need to do it regularly. These are is these are four steps here. So if you're writing down notes, it's four simple steps here. I but simple I say, but you do have to really work on these to get into a habit. Regularly, it's not just a one-time thing. Every day brings about new things to fear. The enemy knows, the devil knows that if you stop being afraid of one thing, he's gonna throw another thing at you because then you keep freaking out. And so we need to do it regularly and with all things. We need to remember that we need to turn over things every time to Jesus and not walk in fear. So regularly would be the first step in casting your anxieties on him.

SPEAKER_01:

That's so good. Uh you regularly um and specifically, I would say, um, when when something new or even the same old thing that the uh your fear monster that pops up, we say we don't just say God keep me from fear, but we name the thing and and maybe name the thing with scripture that quotes God's promises back to him. Lord, you haven't given me a spirit of fear, so deliver me from this, from from from the the fear of the doctor's report or the fear of them uh of not having enough money. He hasn't forgotten them. You don't you don't repeat them back and get specifically right because he's forgotten them, he knows them. But we honor him when we show him we haven't forgotten that he has delivered us from those fears so many times, and we want him to once again. Uh how about this creatively too?

SPEAKER_02:

Oh what do you mean so creatively? I'd she you'd mentioned that, but what does that what does that mean to you as far as creatively? Because something comes to mind for me, but for you, what what does that mean?

SPEAKER_01:

I just think that we have to think about we get we know ourselves really well, and we go, these are the things that tend to trip me up. So um, and and get me or so maybe for you it's a type of movie or a type of music. You get creative, you say, I'm gonna block that, I'm getting rid of that streaming service, or I'm replacing that band with worship music. We find specific ways to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. Um, get creative about how you can be praying regularly about this. Put put something, put, put, um, do not fear, fear not. Put it on your fridge, a little, a little note card. Um, put it over the the head of your bed on your on your bathroom mirror, and it it reminds you to creatively, regularly be handing this over to Jesus. Memorize scripture about this. Um, out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. So remember, hymns, worship music. Um, you know, I gotta tell you this real quick. I always knew it you would always know it's dad. You always know when it's dad pulling up to your house. You know why? Our dad Ron. Because you will hear Gaither's music blasting uh from down the road from his car. He makes the most of every moment to set his thoughts on Jesus creatively.

SPEAKER_02:

So the creatively, when I was thinking about that, it actually goes to something you mentioned, and I'm just gonna get real specific real quick, and uh we can lose some listeners through this. Um, if you are um looking at the fear topic, I just taught a class on managing media, making better media decisions at our on Eagles Wings Leadership Center. Great group of uh native young people together, uh learning together this year. And I was talking about choices, and I said we're not when you look at the horror genre, oh yeah, there's a lot of different choices to make in different movies and what content's okay and everything else. But when you are specifically choosing to watch something that fuels and triggers fear, even if it's just for two hours and you're I and you're just filling in, it's just it's just entertainment. I know it's not real. I we have experienced and seen and heard stories of so many people through an open door, a fear open door in media, have all of a sudden then had this life change where it has gone to a dark place really fast. And I know we think it's just a movie, but when you were saying, when you are looking at even some of the titles to these movies, I don't even like looking at the posters, much less going into the movies, and it's not saying, Don't go watch any of these, don't go watch this or that. But when it comes to horror, it's based on fear and the word of God. You just said it, Doug, perfect love casts out fear. So we're saying God's perfect love, and I'm gonna go watch something that triggers fear that He has cast out.

SPEAKER_01:

That is a great point. And maybe, maybe you're uh older and you're like, you know what, the horror genre doesn't interest me. I got no problem with that. Like Brad said, there is fear all throughout streaming media through on whether you're on Netflix or NBC or wherever you're watching it, everything's about a murder, everything's about kidnapping, everything. So if you're gonna keep feeding whatever, whereas a horror movie or just anything that feeds your fear, get rid of it.

SPEAKER_02:

And that goes into number four. So we we talked about regularly four ways to fight the fear monster regularly, specifically, creatively, what you got? And what we're just talking about was wisely. Um to make the right decisions, be smart about what you're feeding your heart. The the old Scott's lawn commercial, feed your lawn. Feed it, feed it. You want to feed your heart the right things because when you feed it the right things, it's going to grow. I just had a situation where uh our lawn just started going brown and then just turning to dirt, half of our lawn. And it's because this is being attacked. It was being attacked by this one whatever kind of worm thing, and it kills lawns. We had someone come, he fed it the right stuff, treated it, got rid of what was attacking it, and all of a sudden it was growing again quickly. Stop what is attacking your life and causing the fear, and turn to Jesus and what he wants for you to be able to say, I'm going to feed it like you were saying, Doug, worship music, not watching the wrong things, tuning into the right things, and choosing to live in a life that is free from fear. So let me wrap us up with this. Uh, we're during the summers, my family travels to uh these uh communities, and uh sometimes we're staying in sketchy parking lots uh because we're just kind of staying close to the team we travel with and everything else. First year that we did this with uh our daughter Carissa, so she's just three months old, maybe four months old, and all of a sudden we start hearing things that are being really hard, like rocks being thrown at this rental RV. We're like, oh no. Um, and they're just there it sounds like rocks, and then Where you were staying. Yeah, we're staying in it, so we're just exposed outside. There's a and and we're in this RV, and then all of a sudden we hear a gunshot down the street.

unknown:

Oh man.

SPEAKER_02:

And then all of a sudden, we see the shadow of a head of someone's head walking by our bedroom window. So someone is right there. And I had been in situations before where I've I've stood in this small trailer before when I was single, before I was married, before kids, where someone said, you know, Brad, I have a gun right now and I could kill you if I wanted to. And I was able to have not fear in that moment and say, Well, that's in the Lord's hands. But then when I have my wife and my daughter there, all of a sudden I was freaking out. Fear set in in a major way. And fast forwarding to the end of the story, getting through this, and I talked with someone about this. And I actually talked to dad, uh, our dad right afterwards. And what God spoke to my heart, this isn't what dad said to me, it's just what the Lord kind of said to me in the process was, Brad, if you trusted me before, why aren't you trusting me now? Why are you afraid now when I've always cared for you, I've always looked out for you. And it hit me that fear was a choice for me. I was choosing fear over trust and faith. If you are someone that's listening today and you know Jesus, you know that he has got a track record that is spotless, flawless, and you can trust him and you can move from a life of fear to faith. If you are someone who does not know Jesus yet, please know that his track record is flawless. His love is amazing, his hope is real, his peace is forever, and he can cast out that fear in your life. If you've been looking for the answer, cry out to Jesus and just talk to him and say, Dear Jesus, please forgive me for running to the things that I want to. Forgive me for running to things that are called sin. And Jesus, please, I believe you died on the cross for my sins. I believe you set me free when you did that. If I will just choose a relationship with you, I declare with my mouth right now that Jesus is Lord because I believe that you were raised from the dead. Set me free from my fear and help me follow you, Jesus. If you prayed that right now, you have started a relationship with Jesus. If you pray that and mean it, he is there and you can turn to him and you can be set free from a life of fear.

SPEAKER_01:

We are uh when these uh mics go off, we're gonna as a team here just pray for each one of our listeners here um about whatever fear is that is tormenting you that you're carrying. Remember, as Christ's ambassador, you uh as you learn to throw off fear, to fear not, and trust Jesus with everything, to cast your cares on him, your kids are watching you, your spouse is watching you, your co-workers are watching you, and they will see the kind of difference Jesus makes in your life, and then you're gonna have an opportunity to tell them the kind of difference he can make in theirs. So go mad, go make a difference, and um we're gonna pray for you in just a moment here.
