Coach Jones and Caden Brewer are taking Henderson County basketball to Europe.
Basketball dreams are soaring beyond borders as East Henderson High School's Coach Marquintus Jones and star player Caiden Brewer prepare to represent the United States at the United World Games in Italy and Austria.
What began as a local success story has transformed into an international opportunity. Coach Jones shares how his six-year journey at East Henderson focused first on building relationships with players before chasing victories. That foundation led to an extraordinary season featuring a remarkable 27-game winning streak and an undefeated regular season record. The coach's philosophy proves that when players know how much you care, they'll invest in what you're teaching them—both on and off the court.
Caiden Brewer embodies this success as Henderson County's all-time leading scorer, two-time conference player of the year, and newly announced two-time North Carolina District 12 Player of the Year. Beyond his athletic prowess, Brewer ranks among the top 10 students in his class academically. His leadership extends to mentoring younger players, including his freshman brother Jalen who joined the team this year. For Caiden, the opportunity to travel internationally marks a first—"I've never been anywhere," he admits with excitement about taking his talents to Europe alongside the coach he's trusted for four years.
Their journey represents more than basketball excellence; it's a testament to what's possible when community, dedication, and relationship-building converge. You can support their European adventure through a special fundraiser as they prepare to showcase Henderson County talent on the global stage. Follow their journey and be part of sending these hometown heroes across the Atlantic to represent not just East Henderson, but America itself.

The George Real Estate Group presents the Hometown Hero Award to someone in our community who goes above and beyond to make our hometown a better place to live. Here's this week's Hometown Hero Show. It's 845 and time now for our George Real Estate Group Hometown Hero Show. It's 845 and time now for our George Real Estate Group Hometown Hero Series. And we're just excited to death to be able to talk with the folks from East Henderson High School. Coach Marquintus Jones is here with us, and Caden Brewer and Noah George. Good morning, noah, good morning and happy.
Speaker 2:Friday how are you doing today? Well, a lot to be thankful for and certainly the highlight of my week the Hometown Hero series.
Speaker 1:Yeah, especially this week. We've been looking forward to our guests today. But before we get to our guests, tell us a little bit about the real estate market.
Speaker 2:Well, the real estate market continues to be strong. I mean we're averaging 124 single-family homes a month selling in Henderson County, some 12 condos a month selling in Henderson County. So the condo market makes up about 10% of the market. The single-family home market remains strong. But the thing that's happening is the inventory levels remain low but because of the demand, prices still are remaining higher. Our average single-family home price in Henderson County is $550,000. $550,000. But we're just seeing so much activity. It's a great time of year, certainly going into the spring. I mean real estate it's always when is it right for you? It's right when it's right for you. It's not about the interest rate, it's not about the prices or the economy. I mean people buy and sell homes around life. Life happens and it could be a really beautiful, exciting reason, a celebration you're buying or selling a home, or it could be a challenging reason.
Speaker 1:Whatever it might be, we're there to walk alongside with our clients and you guys do that every single day from your offices in Flat Rock and you do that for the whole region.
Speaker 2:Western North Carolina and upstate south carolina, and so we have an incredible group of agents. But you can find us online at realestatebygregcom uh. Follow us on social media instagram and facebook and we also podcast all of our radio shows.
Speaker 1:Well, noah, join me in welcoming coach jones and uh caden brewer to the mic today. You, before you switch the mic away, you were the one who actually brought this to our attention here on the hometown hero.
Speaker 2:Well, we are so grateful to have coach jones here. It was last year, I believe, and when you guys won the conference championship and then what an incredible season you guys have had. And there's also, I mean, and we want to talk about, um, what you guys have accomplished this year. This year I unprecedented for East Henderson.
Speaker 3:Yes, sir, Thank you all for having me and I'm so happy to be here. And, Mr George, I thank you for just all that you've done for East and just for you know, just not only the basketball team but for all sports at East. So we really appreciate that.
Speaker 2:Absolutely, man. We're so proud of our students and we're so grateful for the program you guys have created let's talk about. Well, and, by the way, there's some other incredible news you guys were going to share about today as well that we want to talk about. But, first off, let's talk about the season you had, and then let's talk about who you have here with us this morning.
Speaker 3:Yeah, the season, I haven't really reflected on it much, but having a 27-game win streak, it was amazing.
Speaker 3:Just having the guys fight and be gritty each and every day and taking the season one day at a time. It was remarkable to witness, I tell you, just having Caden Brewer here with me. He's been an honor to coach the past four years. I tell myself each day I don't know what I'm going to do without him. He has taken our program by the horns and actually just made it to what I've been trying to do for the past six years and he has done an amazing job of just leading the way, especially his sophomore, junior, senior year. He's remarkable as a student, as a person and also as a player, as you know.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and just an all-around leader.
Speaker 3:You know, academically, athletically, I mean just uh, I mean it's incredible yeah, I, I've never coached um, I've been coaching for 19 years, and 13 years of it um at the collegiate level and I never coached a kid um like caden. Um, he, he experienced um, his experience in the classroom being a a top 10 student at our school and just the person that he is and where he come from, the parents and the household he came from, and obviously the player everybody knows, just all-time leading scorer in Henderson County, just two-time Well, he just found this out yesterday. I mean, obviously he was the two-time. Well, he just found this out yesterday. I mean, obviously he was the two-time player of the year in our conference and now he's the two-time, uh, north carolina district 12 uh, player of the year. Um, that was just named, I think maybe a day ago, um, so in in last year he was the western north carolina player of the year and that award has not came out yet, but I would be shocked if he didn't win that again this year.
Speaker 2:Significant. On top of that, I was told, you guys were invited and selected to compete in the United World Games. Yeah, on top of everything you guys accomplished.
Speaker 3:Yes, that's another For me. I was devastated the last game of the season, of course, just because I didn't think I was going to get to coach him again. But now being able to coach him in the United World Games somewhere in another country, it's going to be awesome.
Speaker 2:I mean, let's talk about this. Caden Brewer was selected to compete in the United World Games in Italy and Austria, representing the United States on a global stage. I mean incredible honor Three straight conference championships, deep playoff runs and then again your historic season this past season and again, as you mentioned, top 10 student in your class. And then you were selected to coach the under 19 us team as well. I mean, I mean incredible yeah, it's I.
Speaker 3:I'm still shocked. I'm still shocked. Um, I'm excited, I'm a little nervous, um, but um, having came by my side, it always makes me a better coach that's incredible, any I mean again historic season you guys had.
Speaker 2:This is your sixth season at east and again, from where you began and to where you are right now, I mean it's remarkable to look at the progress you've made yeah, it's um, I tend to look at it a lot um, because I want to continue to have our program going in the right direction.
Speaker 3:When I took over, it wasn't about the wins and losses. It was about the relationships for me with the guys, and the more they knew how much I cared about them, the more they were going to invest into what I was trying to teach them each day, not only about basketball, but also about life, and that's where I think I get the most growth out of our players off the court and obviously it trickles over to on the court Incredible.
Speaker 1:Six years. I can't believe you've been there because you came here to the radio station, I believe, as you were just coming on board, and that was six years ago. Yes, sir, time flies.
Speaker 2:Oh, man, and you coached at Limestone. I did, were you a player there as well. I was a player there.
Speaker 3:Actually, in October I was inducted into the Limestone Hall of Fame as a player. In October I was inducted into the Limestone Hall of Fame as a player and after I finished my playing career, I also coached there for 13 years. Incredible yes, sir.
Speaker 1:Swing the mic around to Caden. Caden, we've been talking about you. Now we've got to talk to you. How are you? I'm good, I'm good, it's good to have you here with us. Tell us about how you feel about all of this excitement. Man, this is big stuff.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I mean yeah it's really exciting. I've never been anywhere, honestly, never been really far at all and to go overseas like go Europe and be able to do something that I love
Speaker 1:to do and then be with my coach.
Speaker 4:You know it's obviously really exciting.
Speaker 1:You are a Hendersonville native? Yeah, you know, it's obviously really exciting. You are a hendersonville native, yeah, and so uh, well, you guys are in june gonna get on the big bird and take off man. Uh, there's a fundraising. Uh drive underway to to help you guys. This is not cheap. Uh, those air flare tickets are not cheap. So uh, tell us about how folks can contribute, how they can get in touch.
Speaker 4:So there is a GoFundMe for me and Coach Jones to just raise money, you know, to help cover some of the expenses on the trip. You know, like plane tickets, obviously the travel costs, hotels food stuff like that Right, you can find it, I think, on Facebook probably. You know a lot of places Instagram, well we'll be sure to include it.
Speaker 2:We will be podcasting this program. We'll be sure to include that information as well. Absolutely, when you reflect I mean this is your senior year I can imagine just bittersweet, I mean and again, the opportunity to continue to play under Coach Jones overseas is incredible. Any reflection over the last four years, I mean congratulations, You're a senior, right graduating, Thank you. And any plans for college? Where are you headed?
Speaker 4:I'm not really sure yet. You know, still waiting it out, trying to make the best decision possible.
Speaker 2:You know, keep waiting for the best opportunity, but you know yeah, Did you think at the beginning of the season you guys were going to have that undefeated record through the regular season? I mean, not exactly Like I knew it was possible, but like that's not a common thing, like teams don't just go undefeated.
Speaker 4:But like looking at our schedule, looking at our team, like I knew we were going to be good, but like all it takes is one game to slip up and I mean that's a loss right there. But I mean, yeah, it's incredible to go undefeated.
Speaker 2:It's incredible Talk about your teammates and the group you have.
Speaker 4:Yeah, so I I mean, this is my senior class. These are the kids I've been going to school with for 12 years my main guys, kyle Bailey, riley Adams and Caden Allison we've been with each other since first grade, second grade, I mean.
Speaker 2:you've been playing basketball together with your friends since you were in elementary school.
Speaker 4:Yeah, and then obviously brought in my brother this year he was a freshman, jalen, he was really good for us this year. I mean, it was just fun. It was something different. I've never got to play with him, that was just. It was really cool. That's amazing.
Speaker 1:Well, coach Jones, let's talk about the future without Caden, as you mentioned a minute ago and right now, you guys are not just laying around, you're staying sharp, staying busy, aren't you?
Speaker 3:Yes, sir, we are right now just planning on how to pick up, just to stay in shape. And so after spring break we'll start back with some skill and drill with the guys that we got returning and also with Caden, just to keep him in shape, and he's going to do a lot for us the next couple months just by leading us, like he's done for the last four years in skill and drill, just trying to get our guys better, just for the upcoming season.
Speaker 1:And work with the JVs and bringing out some new guys.
Speaker 3:Yeah, he's actually a part of my JV group as well. He helps develop those young guys. They have a tremendous amount of respect for him and they love caden and just for him to be around to to help, you know, sharpen their skills. Um, it's, it's been, it's been a really good sight to see how about your coaching staff?
Speaker 2:talk about the your coaching staff you have with you.
Speaker 3:Yeah, um, I've been having uh, we lost coach white side last year and he was a big, big part of of what we was doing for the last four years. But the last two years we'll have Josh English, who he's not an employee at school but he's a huge, huge supporter of East. He graduated from East. His daughter is a senior on the girls' basketball team. He helps me out a lot with just the basketball mind and being able to talk legit basketball in depth. I have Coach Saltz. He's been with me just this second year and he's starting to come into his own as a coach. He's been doing a good job of a lot of behind the scenes things that a head coach really needs help with on a day-to-day basis. And we brought in another volunteer assistant, coach Robinson, who has done a good job of just being around just to help when things need it.
Speaker 2:What do you feel like the biggest challenge is moving forward with your program.
Speaker 3:I just think just leadership. I mean this guy, caden Simberside. He's been my leader for obviously the past three years for sure. Um, but you know our guys go as he go, and now that he's gone so I'm just looking for the next guy, just to step up.
Speaker 2:There's a void to fill.
Speaker 3:Yeah, huge, huge void, and not only just with offense and defense, just that voice to have the coaches back. And that's something that he never wavered in his four years. But playing for me, he always trusted me and that's a big, big part of our relationship.
Speaker 1:Trust Always trusted me and that's a big, big part of our relationship trust. Well, congratulations to you both on an incredible season and on what we know is to come. We mentioned a few minutes ago that there's a fundraiser in effect so we can raise funds to get these guys to Europe and play in the World Games in Italy and Austria. You can find that information on Venmo, paypal or Zelle and use the link's World Game Fundraiser. Noah, we are so proud of these folks and we just want to thank them so much for coming by and thank you for nominating them and bringing them on board with us.
Speaker 2:Well again, caden and Coach Jones, thank you guys so much for all you've done for our community, and just I mean inspiring story, I mean just an inspiring story, and I know the community just rallied behind you guys. It was something special.
Speaker 1:We thank you both for being here with us. Join us next week. We're going to talk a little more basketball. The JV Hendersonville High School girls basketball team will be with us, some of them next week. Noah, thank you so much for bringing us the Hometown Heroes series every Friday morning.
