Sleep Tight Kids: Beds, Blankets, and Hope for Children in Need

George Real Estate Group

What happens when a school teacher's concern for her students transforms into a mission to ensure every child has a safe, warm place to sleep? In this heartwarming episode, we delve into the remarkable story of Sleep Tight Kids, a nonprofit organization that's become a lifeline for children and families across Western North Carolina.

Founder Jill Schwartzkopf shares how a literal dream became reality when she established Sleep Tight Kids in 2009 after noticing students coming to class cold, tired, and without basic necessities. What began as collecting blankets and comfort items has evolved dramatically, especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Today, the organization delivers approximately 15 beds weekly to families rebuilding their lives, many whose children have been sleeping on floors for months.

The conversation reveals the often-overlooked challenges families face during disaster recovery. While homes may be repaired, starting over without beds, linens, and basic household items creates another layer of hardship, particularly for children. Sleep Tight Kids fills this crucial gap with a 100% volunteer-operated model serving 14 counties.

Between heartfelt stories of impact, we also explore the resilient local real estate market. Henderson County continues showing balanced activity with 53 new listings and 55 homes under contract in just the past week, demonstrating healthy demand despite interest rate concerns.

The episode highlights an upcoming community event at Village Pub in Biltmore Village and opportunities to support Sleep Tight Kids through donations and raffle tickets. For listeners touched by this story of neighbors helping neighbors, visit sleeptightkids.org to learn how you can contribute to ensuring every child has a comfortable place to sleep tonight.

We have so much to talk about this morning. We have some special guests which I will get to in a moment, but just before we go there, just the market.

Speaker 1:

Everybody's asking about the market and again, you got to be careful about all the news, all the real estate. People are like, oh, the real estate market? But the real estate market is moving. It's absolutely moving. We still see great demand. We still see great activity. I will give a little bit of a snapshot of what's happening here locally. Just in the last seven days there's been 53 new listings, 40 price reductions. Now get this 55 homes have gone under contract in the last seven days in Henderson County. So if you're doing the math like I am, you've had just as many homes go under contract as you've had come onto the market. So it's a very balanced market in regards to supply and demand. And in the last seven days there's been 35 homes closed. So I mean it's a healthy market. We're still averaging about 125 single-family homes a month selling. The prices have softened a little bit. We're in the 540s for the average single-family home price in Henderson County, but the demand is there. We've really seen over the last two years this consistent demand low inventory levels. Now this time of year we tend to see more inventory coming onto the market, which means more options for buyers. But the market's the market. The interest rates are the interest rates. Again, it's a great time to buy and sell. If it's right for you we know real estate happens when life happens it could be a really positive reason why you're buying or selling. It could be a challenging reason, but either way we'd love to interview for the job. There's no pressure, there's no cost, there's no obligation.

And good morning, wendy, good morning.

Speaker 2:

How are you?

Speaker 1:

Good Thanks for being here this Monday morning.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, I hope everybody had a great Easter.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely Happy Easter yes, absolutely. And again the a great Easter. Absolutely Happy Easter. Yes, absolutely. And again, the weather's beautiful and here we go into the spring. But, wendy, you've been very successful in the real estate industry and while doing that, on top of that, you're very involved in giving back to the community as well, which, again, I think it's a hallmark of our agents at the George Real Estate Group. It's not just real estate, it's about the community, it's about giving back. Wendy, tell us and introduce for us our special guest we have with us this morning and we're going to have a. I'm so excited about this conversation this morning.

Speaker 2:

Yes, hey everybody, I am going to introduce you to Jill Schwartzkopf. She has been a dear friend of mine for years and years. We met in the wedding industry here in Western North Carolina and she is the heart and the soul of this special, special charity. And I would love to introduce her, Jill Schwarzkopf.

Speaker 3:

Hey everybody.

Speaker 1:

Good morning Jill. Thank you so much for being here this morning.

Speaker 3:

Thank you for having me.

Speaker 1:

So you're the founder and visionary of and let's make sure it's Sleep Tight Kids. That's right, and this is a nonprofit you started a number of years ago. We want to share with our listeners about this incredible organization and the things you're doing, but let's back up. Where did this idea come from?

Speaker 3:

Okay, so I was actually a school teacher in Henderson County at Mills River Elementary School. There were a lot of kids that were coming in that were dirty, they spoke of being cold at night, they spoke of not having blankets, that kind of thing. And I actually had a dream one night. I woke up the next morning and I said to my husband, I'm going to start a nonprofit and we're going to collect blankets, and we're going to collect blankets, and we're going to. And he was like, okay, you know. And so we had to go through all the hoops of getting a 501c3, which is not an easy thing to do. But even the name came to me in a dream, the Sleep Tight Kids name. You know, first thing I woke up and I got online and I saw it was available for sleeptightkidsorg sleeptightkidscom. I was like, oh, I'm doing this.

Speaker 1:

So let's pause for a second. You were so compelled I mean, your heart was so taken by this you just couldn't not take action.

Speaker 3:

That's right.

Speaker 1:

You saw what the children here in Henderson County were facing and you're like I have to do something about this. That's right.

Speaker 3:

Yes, and even before I became a 501c3, I started collecting blankets and items, pajamas, things like that actually at the school, and so I would send out just like a little note and say, if you can afford a blanket, drop it by my room. And the people were just so giving in that community in this community it's an extremely giving community and they rallied for the cause. And in that community in this community it's an extremely giving community and they rallied for the cause. And then later that year I became a real 501c3. But I mean, a lot of people just gave blankets and stuff. It was amazing.

Speaker 1:

It is, and I think for our listeners it's hard to hear Again, we live in such a prosperous and again just privileged community that we're in, just to be really candid, and on the other side of the coin I mean there's two sides of the coin there is still great needs here in the community.

Speaker 3:

Yes, there definitely are, and now the need is growing. We started in 2009, and we did comfort bags. We started in 2009 and we did comfort bags. So a lot of these comfort bags. They would have a dental kit, a blanket, a teddy bear, a, a book, and the DSS workers police, sheriff's department would be able to carry these comfort bags with them in their cars and when they would go to get pick kids up, unfortunately sometimes both of their parents would be being arrested or being taken into custody. We would have to take their, even take all of their clothes off, because their clothes would have meth in it. We provided, you know, pajamas, blankets to wrap them in, swaddle them in until they could get to a foster home. So we did that for many years the comfort bags. But when Hurricane Helene happened, then it moved to the next level. So now, with Hurricane Helene, we're doing more necessity driven things. A lot of people they don't have beds, mattresses, all those things got damaged or washed away.

Speaker 1:

I think it's important for us to again these conversations that we have ongoing, that you've been doing, but this catalyst of what we experienced with Helene, I mean this is a long-term recovery effort. Again, it's interesting because, you know, life seems somewhat normal, right, you drive around through town and for most people they've been able to get back to what that quote-unquote normal looks like, but it's not for so many people.

Speaker 3:

It's not for so many people and we're actually now getting more calls than we ever have and it's because a lot of people are either getting housing of some sort or they're getting their homes redone and now they're ready to move back in, and so they don't have those items and people are you know they're struggling. So they don't have those items. And people are, you know they're struggling. They don't have just the necessities, even cleaning products, the mattresses, the beds, pillows, even towels, things like that. We've purchased mops, like I said, the cleaning supplies, so you just can't believe the necessity-driven part of it is really taken over. So we're kind of backing off on the comfort bags and providing those beds and mattresses. They're very expensive and people just don't have the money.

Speaker 1:

Right, yes, just the extra. I mean they're just surviving, and then they lost their homes. I mean I think the number was some 1,500 homes just Henderson County. I mean that's not including the other counties, but I mean so many families that, and there's still. It's still in process and it's going to take a long time. So you've, and so how are you guys getting the word out and how's that happening?

Speaker 3:

Yes, so we, a lot of our people hear about us through DSS and foster care services and they actually we serve 14 counties. That's yeah, really yeah, it's a lot of counties, um, so, and you can go on our website to learn about all those counties at sleeptightkidsorg, as well as donate, uh, but um, yeah, so, the those dss officers and, um, even the sheriff's department and everything they give um the people that need it. You know our, our name and number and we field at least 15 phone calls or beds per week and that's something.

Speaker 1:

That's significant, it's significant.

Speaker 3:

It's significant, and so we've actually had to form an alliance with a bedding company Beds for Kids and so we get our beds from them. We buy our beds from them at a discounted rate. We have a large warehouse in Polk County and that's where all the beds go out of. We are 100% a volunteer-based organization. So I just literally I get out my list and I say, okay, who's volunteered to go deliver beds? And Wendy, a lot of the times goes, like I said, I have a group of people that literally they just have their trucks ready to go and they're able to make those deliveries 15 a week.

Speaker 1:

Yes Wow, Did you ever think? What year did you first start? Sleep Tight.

Speaker 3:

Kids 2009.

Speaker 1:

Okay, here we are. I mean some 14, 15 years later. No 16 years later yes, and did you ever think it would evolve into what it is right now?

Speaker 3:

I mean I just it blows my mind, I mean it really does. And, of course, with Helene, I mean who would have known that this was coming our way? And I'm just so, I feel so fortunate too, because I feel like this is Helene is almost rejuvenated, sleep tight kids. It truly has. I mean we have to help, we can't just sit aside folks.

Speaker 1:

We can't Just like when you were a school teacher. You're like I cannot not take action.

Speaker 2:

That's right.

Speaker 1:

And here again, the needs are here and the organization you've set up I mean, you were there and you had the organization to pivot to step up to this need that's nothing that you ever imagined.

Speaker 3:

Right, I mean, and you can't believe, so many people have, and I mean I just thank you guys so much, so many people have stepped up and donated. It's unbelievable People that you know from Charlotte and Florida and all these different areas, atlanta, texas people have just donated California. I mean it, people have just donated California. I mean it's crazy, it's amazing. It's amazing people have come together.

Speaker 1:

So it's just a powerful story. Yeah, and again, we're so grateful, Wendy, for you introducing us to Jill and bringing Jill on the radio this morning. We have a short break, coming up here in just a minute, but, Wendy, when did you again? How did your involvement? How that's evolved? I mean, how long have you been working with Sleep Tight Kids now?

Speaker 2:

Probably from the beginning I would say pretty much close to the beginning Just from Jill and I working in the wedding industry here in Asheville we just became really close friends and through the deliveries and the comfort bags and just volunteering throughout the entire year she really has brought a group of friends not only in the industry but just in the area all together and just giving love and stuff like that and showing support for these kids. And so we've evolved with Jill through this whole process and we were so proud of her.

Speaker 1:

It's amazing, it's amazing, and so sleeptightkidsorg. And then do you have social media. People can follow as well.

Speaker 3:

Yes, instagram and Facebook, it's all. Sleep Tight, kids.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing we have. There's an exciting event happening tomorrow night, which we'll let's talk about that after the break, but so stay tuned in. There's an important event happening tomorrow night to support Sleep Tight Kids and we're going to talk about more details, ways you can get involved, ways you can give, ways you can volunteer, and again, there's raffle tickets even being sold. It's going to be a fun event tomorrow night, so stay tuned in. We have a short break coming up and we want to share more about that information. Wendy and Jill, thank you so much for being here this morning. You're listening to the Georgia Real Estate Group live radio broadcast here on the Q every Monday morning and again grateful to just again continue to get the word about incredible organizations doing incredible work here in Western North Carolina, and Sleep Tight Kids is doing that. So stay tuned in. We'll be back right after this break.

Speaker 1:

There's a strange thing that happens in life Sometimes, when things are just okay, we stay stuck longer than we would if things were truly bad. It's called the region beta paradox and explains why people stay in homes, that kind of work neighborhoods that used to be okay, or rentals where the price isn't too bad because it's comfortable, but comfort can cost you your dreams. What if you didn't wait for something to break before you made a breakthrough? What if the nudge you've been waiting for is now At the George Real Estate Group? We hear it all the time. I'm so glad I did it while I could. The move, the decision, the change before it's too late. Whether you need more space, less stress or just a fresh start, you don't have to stay stuck, you don't have to settle and you don't have to do it alone. Call the George Real Estate Group at 828-393-0134. Don't let just fine, hold you back. Let's make a move while you still can. Good morning and welcome back. So thankful to be here with you this Monday morning. On. Welcome back. So thankful to be here with you this Monday morning. On the Q Again, hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend. And here we are, april 21st. Time's flying.

Speaker 1:

The market again keeps moving. I shared that the first quarter in Henderson County was up some 7%. The number of single-family homes sold this first quarter versus last year's first quarter. We continue to see strong demand. Interest rates are the interest rates. Actually, one in three homes sold in Henderson County are purchased with cash. So we continue to see strong demand. The market's very healthy. You certainly are hearing reports across other parts of the country where inventory levels are so high. Our inventory levels are remaining steady. Again, just as many homes went under contract just in the last seven days as went on the market. So, again, very healthy market.

Speaker 1:

But your home, your situation, your specific goals are unique to you and so we put together these plans and we're glad to help walk through. There's no pressure, there's no cost, there's no obligation to have a conversation about your real estate goals and dreams, whatever that might look like. And again, we'd love to have the conversation. Give us a call 828-393-0134, 828-393-0134. Find us online at realestatebygregcom. Also, follow us on social media and Instagram and you can follow us on our podcast. We podcast all of our radio shows.

Speaker 1:

You never know the difference your gift can make in someone's life and again, that's where these incredible nonprofits in our community and today we're highlighting Sleep Tight Kids. Your gifts can make a difference in a family's life and a child's life. And again, there's avenues to give where your money is going to stay here in the community, and I know it's sleep tight kids. They, they, they are such a lean organization where the majority of the money 99,. I mean I don't want what 90 plus percent of your I mean like it's such a high percentage of the money stays. I mean, I mean, in the community. You have a very lean organization with very little overhead, and you guys have been doing this since 2009. That's amazing. And so we've been having the conversation with Jill Schwarzkopf yes, that's a familiar name, by the way, but anyways and we have Wendy Morris here with us this morning, again, so grateful to have the conversation no-transcript.

Speaker 3:

We sure do, we do.

Speaker 2:

We do.

Speaker 1:

And there's still tickets available right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so what we're doing is we are headed to Village Pub in Biltmore Village. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Zeno Lancaster of Lancaster Law Firm. He's a partner in this fantastic restaurant. It's so good so we thought we would be out there. We're going to be out there 5 to 7 tomorrow and we are just going to all just come together and we also want to just come together and just show our gratitude for everything that people have done for us as well. So it's always good as a community to just get together and just talk about everything that we have done since the hurricane. We haven't had an event since then. So, yeah, we would love to see you out Village Pub tomorrow, five to seven. We're also selling raffle tickets. Our friends at the Biltmore Estate have been amazing. We have four tickets, two sets of two grounds passes, house passes. We are raffling off at $5 a ticket and you can Venmo Sleep Tight Kids or we'll also be selling those tomorrow as well, and we'll pull the special two names tomorrow night.

Speaker 1:

Can people buy tickets without attending the event?

Speaker 2:

No, absolutely Absolutely. You can reach out to us on the website or Messenger or anything like that. You can Venmo Sleep Tight Kids and put how many tickets you want to purchase, and we'll get you on those tickets as well.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. What else, Again? This is an opportunity to connect with the community, to see your friends and family and again support. Sleep Tight Kids.

Speaker 3:

And it's free. So, yeah, there's no ticket cost to get in. So it's great because you can bring. Kids are welcome, your families are welcome. We just want this opportunity for everybody to get together.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. And again your organization has evolved and again, as with Helene, the needs have changed in how you guys have been able to pivot and step up. But you were sharing in the first half of the show, 15 calls a week for beds and these aren't used beds. These are. I mean you guys are giving and providing new materials for people.

Speaker 3:

That's right. So all of the items and they always have been as Sleep Tight Kids are newly purchased items. So we have, you know, great relationships with people that like with our blankets and things like that, where we get them in bulk. So really monetary donations. I mean, obviously you could go to Target and buy a bed for I mean, or buy a blanket for $19.95. But I can get a blanket that's just as nice for $4.99, because we buy them in bulk.

Speaker 1:

That's right, I mean. So that's where you're the donations. It's great if nice for $4.99, because we buy them in bulk, in wholesale, that's right, I mean. So that's where the donations. It's great if you want to go out and go purchase it yourself, but your money actually can go further through the channels and relationships that Sleep Tight Kids have. And so I mean let's just be really candid. I mean there's a great need for monetary donations at Sleep Tight Kids. Yeah, great need for monetary donations at Sleep Tight Kids.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and if you're a business in town, we have a lot of businesses that do support Sleep Tight Kids and we are happy to give you a shout out and talk about your business as well, because it is. It's a huge community where you help us, we help you. We all just try to come together and help these families.

Speaker 1:

Yes, that's amazing. Um, and are you still teaching, or is this your?

Speaker 3:

no, so that's evolved so, believe it or not, I left teaching right around this time um that I started sleep tight kids um and I became a full-time wedding photographer okay, which is how I know Wendy. You know because she has blush.

Speaker 1:

You know Asheville, so it's just, you guys are very busy.

Speaker 3:

We're very busy with weddings and non-profit. We thought this was a great idea to do in April.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, what do they?

Speaker 1:

say about I mean right, this is your.

Speaker 3:

This is the wedding season, but if you want something done.

Speaker 1:

They say go talk to a busy person right. Yes, they, they're going to get stuff done we thrive in chaos.

Speaker 2:

I think any of us do the busier the better we love this charity and we just want to get the name out as much as we can. So why not get everybody together tomorrow night?

Speaker 1:

that's right, exciting event. Mark your counters, come out tomorrow night. Village Pub in Biltmore 5-7. And all this information is online, right, facebook. And then again opportunities to buy raffle tickets and again, if you can't make it, you're just able to give and the website you can give directly.

Speaker 3:

That's correct. Yes, go to the website and click the Donate button and that will take you straight in any amount, even $5, $10.

Speaker 1:

I mean any amount is so appreciated.

Speaker 3:

It's so appreciated. And these families that we meet with, they are so grateful. You know we have conversations with these people. They, you know there's just a lot of people that are hurting. You know they've lost their jobs and they're trying to get back in the game and their kids have been sleeping on the floor. I had last week, a little boy had been sleeping on a rug since, Helene, I mean you're talking months and months so to be able to provide that kid with a bed and bed linens, you know, and a pillow, I mean it's truly, it's priceless.

Speaker 1:

Well, the things that we take for granted, right, I mean, and for families that have lost already so much and then, by the way, I know they're grateful just to have a roof over their head but again it's just. How do we keep serving, how do we keep giving, how do we keep walking alongside our neighbors that have lost so much, how do we keep improving their lives throughout all this and again, things that we take for granted. And you guys are a vehicle. It's wild to hear how your organization has evolved and changed. And then now you're meeting this need and we've seen so many people step up from the hurricane.

Speaker 3:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

And Wendy, you recently had an opportunity to go out and see a friend of ours with Jake Jarvis with Precision Grading, who's been doing work. I mean you personally were able to. I mean you were bringing out some donations, but I know you've seen the devastation in Chimney Rock firsthand. It's hard to comprehend.

Speaker 2:

It's really hard to comprehend. It honestly looks like a movie set. I knew it was going to be bad and it's so crazy because I was just down there like a couple of weeks before the hurricane hit. So you know, when you see these photos online of Chimney Rock, you're like gosh, that's bad. But when you see it in person it's bigger. It's just bigger, and these people are rebuilding. Some of them don't even have running water still, so they're doing great work down there, so we always appreciate them as well.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so many people have stepped up. I mean people that aren't even nonprofits, I mean just neighbors helping neighbors, small businesses donating their own resources. I mean there's so many people coming together, which speaks to our community and the resilience and the generosity that our community has. I mean it's a powerful story and it's going to be ongoing and that's where it's important to me to keep reminding our listeners about the ongoing efforts right now in our community and, again, different aspects of what that might look like. You know, jake Jarvis is helping getting people just access to their homes and then Sleep Tight Kids, I mean they're providing beds. I mean all these. It's so many different collaborations that's making it all possible.

Speaker 3:

Yes, right, and we didn't realize too at Sleep Tight Kids there's really not a lot of people giving beds Like that's kind of that's a huge need. That's just kind of you know Under the radar. Under the radar. Nobody really thinks about that kind of stuff, but it's a real problem. So we're just so happy to be able to come in there and fill that gap.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and then again on top of the hurricane. I mean we have friends that we know that lost homes and clients that actually lost homes in the fires, and again it was just one thing on top of another and then you think about losing your home, whether it was with a fire or with a hurricane. You don't have anything.

Speaker 3:

That's correct, and we also at Sleep Tight Kids. It's not just the hurricane, it can be from a fire or from homelessness, poverty, you know. So we don't really.

Speaker 1:

It's not just the hurricane. It's anybody that's in need.

Speaker 3:

That's right.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. Again, these are new beds, new comforters, new sheets, cleaning products and again all this information you can find on their website, sleeptightkidsorg that cleaning products. And again all this information you can find on their website sleep tight kids dot org. That's right. And the events tomorrow night and which is why we had you guys willing to come, have you guys, uh, you know, today on the show this monday what's fresh on people's mind. They can come out tomorrow night. They can give, they can and just connect with people. They can buy raffle tickets and we're thankful for our friends at the biltmore that donated those tickets.

Speaker 3:

We love our Biltmore State friends. Yes, thank you, Biltmore.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. Again, it's the generosity of so many people that come together. So, jill and Wendy, thank you both. Thank you I just want to make sure in wrapping up, make sure we've covered everything. Anything else that you want to make sure that we touched on.

Speaker 3:

I don't think so, but we appreciate you so much.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely so grateful for both of you. Thank you for the work you do. Again, if you want something done, ask a busy person, right?

Speaker 3:

Amen With coffee, With coffee right.

Speaker 1:

Coffee is important and we're so thankful, again, we're so thankful to be here every Monday morning sharing with you about positive news about our local real estate market and community. And we know real estate is again, real estate is essential. And again, real estate is essential. And again, it's through relationships that we've been able to help so many people and through word of mouth. I got to say thank you to our listeners.

Speaker 1:

Each week we get calls from people from the radio show that have been listening and they call in. They say hey, we're thinking about buying or selling. We're so grateful for that and for the referrals. And again, it's word of mouth and we know real estate happens around life. It could be a really positive reason or a challenging reason why you might be buying or selling, but we'd love to connect, we'd love to interview for the job, and so give us a call 828-393-0134. Find us online at realestatebygregcom. Again, we podcast all of our radio shows so you can connect with us there on social media or stop by our office there in Flat Rock. Have a wonderful day, have a wonderful week and again, if you're out in Biltmore tomorrow night, five to seven sleep tight kids at the Village Pub, take care and we'll see you next Monday.
