Serving the Forgotten: The Storehouse's 25-Year Mission

George Real Estate Group

What happens when paradise has a hidden side? This week we explore the stark reality of Henderson County's wealth gap through the eyes of Lynn Staggs, director of The Storehouse, a local nonprofit celebrating 25 years of service to our community's most vulnerable residents.

Behind the scenic mountain views and gated communities lies a troubling truth: many of our neighbors, particularly seniors, survive on just $500-900 monthly with minimal food assistance. Lynn shares how her organization bridges this gap through weekly food pantry operations and dedicated delivery routes serving homebound seniors who lack transportation and family support.

Nine months after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Western North Carolina, Lynn offers a sobering update on the ongoing recovery. "Yes, the water's back on and the power's back on, but life has not gone back to normal," she explains, describing communities still struggling with damaged infrastructure, displaced families, and the blue tarps that have become an all-too-familiar sight across the region.

We discuss The Storehouse's ambitious expansion plans—moving from their cramped 4,200 square foot location to a nearly 12,000 square foot facility that will allow them to triple their impact. The new building will enable extended operating hours and innovative programming like cooking classes to help clients maximize their food resources. Their fundraising approach is refreshingly straightforward: if 13,000 people each donate $150, they can build it debt-free.

The conversation highlights their current "Spark the Change" Fourth of July fundraiser running through July 31st, with matching funds from ten community partners including local churches and Advent Health. With just two paid staff members and over 75 volunteers, The Storehouse exemplifies efficient community service, ensuring donations directly support their mission of feeding the hungry in Henderson County.

Want to make a difference? Visit storehouseonline.org, call 692-8300, or stop by their location at 1049 Spartanburg Highway to learn how you can volunteer or donate. Because in a community of plenty, no one should go without the basics.

Speaker 1:

We just had some amazing open houses this past weekend. I mean the activity is happening and I will give you a brief snapshot on the market. The market continues to move. Henderson County we're averaging about 126 single family homes a month selling. Buncombe county is averaging over 200 homes a month selling and, interestingly enough, transylvania county just around the corner, just over the, the county line, uh, near brevard they're only averaging some 35 homes a month selling in transylvania county, but it's relative to the amount of homes available in the counties I mean. So the market's still moving the interest rates to the interest rates.

Speaker 1:

But of course, if we know real estate happens around life, it could be a really positive reason why you might be buying or selling, or it could be a challenging reason. But whatever it is, we'd love to have the conversation. Reason, but whatever it is, we'd love to have the conversation again. Call us at 828-393-0134. 828-393-0134. We're so grateful to have one of our regular special guests with us, lynn stags, with the storehouse of henderson county. Good morning, lynn. Good morning. Thank you so much for being here this morning.

Speaker 2:

Thank you for having us again and again, and again it never gets old telling the story again.

Speaker 1:

You guys are doing incredible work here in the community.

Speaker 2:

25 years yes, it's, our anniversary was in may, so we're just sailing right along with our 25th year now that's amazing and the work you're doing, and for those that maybe are tuning in for the first time ever, and my goodness, you've missed out on so much.

Speaker 1:

Let's pretend no one's ever heard of the Storehouse of Henderson County, if you had to describe that and share with what you're doing to someone for the first time ever.

Speaker 2:

Well, you know, people have a heart for different things in life. Some people, you know they want to do missions out of country, out of town, different places. But my heart has always been here in Hendersonville. I grew up here and I love here and I love the people here and there is just a big gap between the haves and the have-nots in Henderson County. Riding around you may not ever see, you know, with all the beautiful homes and all the beautiful gated communities that we have, you may not realize that. You know. Just a mile or two down the road you may run into places that you would be like, oh my goodness, we're still in Henderson County. It really happens that way. The poverty there is, poverty here in the community, like, oh my goodness we're still in Henderson County.

Speaker 1:

It really happens that way. The poverty there's, there is poverty here in the community yes, there's.

Speaker 2:

There's no middle class, basically is what's happened here. And so those people who need, and the elderly, the people who grew up here and lived here their whole lives, when they become seniors, sometimes they can't afford to stay here at the level that they were before. So that's how our mission started, with five little old ladies, and here we are, 25 years later. We have senior delivery routes, we feed people every week, we do Christmas with Henderson County Public Schools and we're just riding the roller coaster when you say senior deliver delivery routes, what does that mean?

Speaker 2:

well, we have certain criteria for our seniors. They have to be, you know, 60 plus that no transportation, no family to help them out, and they get their food delivered to them once a month. They get all their food boxes delivered to them. Plus they get all the essentials that you know we may or may not have in the office all the time. But the senior delivery route people are guaranteed a certain amount of things that food stamps don't cover. A lot of times people just assume well, they'll be fine, they get food stamps. Well, food stamps doesn't cover toilet paper, and that is essential. And food stamps doesn't cover any kind of hygiene products or aspirin or anything like that. And we try to hit all those areas.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and you said at one point you told me it was, and I was so shocked to hear the income level of your clients.

Speaker 2:

That little crowd, this pocket that we're serving. Usually they're anywhere from $5.50 to $900 a month, a month A month, not a day a month and maybe $15 to $25 in food stamps a month $20 a month in food stamps.

Speaker 1:

It's not even worth the paperwork that's hard to comprehend and, by the way and we talked about this affordable housing, I mean trying to find a place to rent with an income of $500 to $900, I mean, it's just, it seems impossible.

Speaker 2:

Well, I mean, I know that they sometimes receive rental assistance, but still the places are so full. Finding a place and if you've got a mom with three kids or something like that, finding a place that will take, you know, the rental assistance and being in a drivable area without living, you know, 20 miles out in the county, that's a feat in itself it's a real challenge.

Speaker 1:

And again you guys, the Storehouse of Henderson County has been serving the community since 2000,. 25 years. It's a. It is a 501 C3. Yes, and it's a nonprofit. And again you guys are doing the, the senior delivery routes and the food pantry right.

Speaker 2:

Yes, we run the food pantry every week, the senior delivery routes. That's happening while we're there and then at beginning in Octoberober we partner with henderson county public schools and we do christmas with the schools. So last year was an unusual year because the hurricane. Normally we serve about 2 000 plus kids. Last year it was 2,700 kids and the little director here about went under, but it still happened it still happened.

Speaker 1:

Well, and you, because of the nine months ago, I mean, we were experiencing this hurricane and, uh, you know, right before Christmas and, like you said, you had a, you know, 25 percent increase. You know, from 2,000, if I doing my math right, but from 2,000 children to 2,500 children doing Christmas 2,700 kids, oh my word, oh, my word.

Speaker 2:

And it was such generous people from this area and outside the area that made this happen and outside the area that made this happen. But the one thing I want to impress upon people is yes, the water's back on and the power's back on, but life has not gone back to normal. Now there's a bigger housing shortage here for the people who are affected. People are still not back in their homes. There's still blue tarps everywhere. Once you drive outside the city limits, you will see how the land is still ravaged here. Bridges are still out, um yeah, it's the the.

Speaker 1:

It is still a long road of recovery ahead of us in our community and, uh, you know we've recently been helping some clients in the back cave area looking to sell their property and so to be out there and to see again some of these areas, just the total destruction. It's hard to comprehend and for people that are still in those areas they're seeing it every single day, versus people that are living in town or whatnot, it's out of sight, out of mind. But a reminder is again our community is still recovering. It's still a long road of recovery ahead.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and we're still dealing with the families who are affected. You know, now, not only did they have the challenges before, but now they have the additional challenges from the hurricane. And how are we going to get through the summer? The kids are home, we need more food, you know, those things are still going on, on top of the fact that, well, we still don't have the bridge fixed and we have to walk across the river every day. Right, just random stuff.

Speaker 1:

It's a lot, yes, across the river every day, right, just it's random stuff. It's a lot, yeah, and and so the amount of work and needs that are still out there are significant. And this is the long game, this is the marathon that we're in, and, uh, you are having now your annual fourth of july, fourth of July matching fund raiser.

Speaker 2:

Yes, we had about 13 years ago I think I've lost all my numbers in the hurricane. We had a veteran couple walk into our office and say hey, we received this inheritance. We are challenging you, we will match anything you raise up to $10,000. And you got eight weeks and they turned around and walked out and I'm like, oh my gosh, what are we going to do? So we got on the radio and we advertised and advertised and advertised and that first year we raised $11,000. So we met that match and raised $21,000. So we met that match and raised $21,000. And ever since then, you know, we were like, okay, what are we going to do next year? They're not going to get an inheritance next year. And we came up, we started partnering with the churches and so we had five churches the first year and then it went to seven.

Speaker 2:

Now there's a one business and, I think, eight or nine churches there's 10 on the list this year and they partner with us and we have a goal this year of 150 000, which meets all of our food, budget and operating expenses that's amazing Because we have two paid staff and everybody else is volunteer and people don't realize we have 75 plus volunteers that come in every day that we're open, pack those boxes, carry them to the cars, unload the trucks, go do the pickups, do the deliveries. We have seven routes here in Henderson County.

Speaker 1:

They take all this stuff out to people and it's all volunteer run and which keeps you guys are so efficient and the money donated stays in the community and it goes and it's all going back to the community and and it's a way to get involved, that's now. I know you guys are always looking for more volunteers. There's always opportunity there and there's opportunity to give financially. So this year, with the goal of $150,000, with the matching funds of the churches and also Advent Health, which again I know that's a significant partnership there.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, partnership there. Yeah, our sponsors are Advent Health East, flat Rock, first Baptist Church, ebenezer Baptist Church, first Baptist Church, fruitland Baptist Church, grace Lutheran Church, hendersonville Church of God, hendersonville Presbyterian Church, reformation Presbyterian Church and St James Episcopal Church. So it always just goes to let you know that all the churches can play nice and we are here as a community. It is a group effort.

Speaker 1:

Coming together.

Speaker 2:

It is a coming together kind of thing.

Speaker 1:

So today's the last day of June.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

And again excited about the 4th of July. But this is your 4th of July Spark the Change matching fund fundraiser and you guys started June 1st at the beginning of the month, but this is going to run through the end of July.

Speaker 2:

Yes, we have until July 31st. That's amazing. If you want to drop it by or write a check, just put 4th of July on there and we'll know which fund it goes into.

Speaker 1:

Again, your dollars can go further with this fundraiser right now. So when are you open and we want to talk? We have a short break coming up in the second half of the show. We want to talk about the new building, which is so exciting.

Speaker 2:

So, temporarily, you're still in your current location yes, we are in our current location with a very great landlord and but we have 4,200 square feet to do all this work in and we are gonna get to move up the road as soon as the building's completed to an almost 12,000 square foot building that's amazing tripling your size yes, much needed.

Speaker 2:

And so now my office won't be that, won't have four sets of people in it. You know my, it's my office, it's the bookkeeper's office, it's the day to entry people's office and the senior delivery route office. So there's four or five things working out of my office well that again it just shows the, the bootstrapping.

Speaker 1:

I mean you and your team and your volunteers. I mean you did whatever it took and you continue to do whatever it takes, and again, with the efforts and the needs now being even more so with after the hurricane in our community. So there is an opportunity to give, and you mentioned earlier I've shared this before we have just two sides of the same coin incredible prosperity here, incredible wealth here, and on the other side of the coin, great needs and hopefully, our listeners. Again, I know we have a lot of regular listeners and they are able to share with their friends and family. We're going to podcast this. We actually podcast all of our radio shows and so please share this podcast with your friends and family about the storehouse and the opportunity to give and to participate and be part of that. And again, we have a short break coming up, but we'll be back, but we're going to talk about the new building and all the things going on there. There's opportunities to participate in that as well.

Speaker 2:

And you don't have to wait for the new building. You can come see us at 1049 Spartanburg Highway now.

Speaker 1:

You can see the metal structures are up right now.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's down the road a little bit. You know it's a mile and a half from us where we're at now.

Speaker 1:

But if you don't want to wait, oh, you can stop by and see your office right now If you don't want to wait until the building's up.

Speaker 2:

hey, we always need help.

Speaker 1:

That's right. So that's awesome. Lynn, thank you so much for being here Again. We have a short break. You're listening to the Georgia Real Estate Group radio broadcast here in the queue every Monday morning, sharing with you about our community and ways to give and ways to give back, and also, of course, we share about what's going on in the market and the housing market and the market's the market. The interest rates are the interest rates we know.

Speaker 1:

Real estate happens around life. Life happens Could be a really positive reason why our clients are buying or selling. It could be a challenging reason but no matter what it is, we are here to advocate. We're here to facilitate. If you're curious what your home is worth, if you're curious about you know, do you own a rental property? Maybe you own a real estate? You know investment property or commercial or land and you want to talk about. You know what are your options. Maybe you're thinking ahead for your estate. Maybe you're thinking ahead. Whatever the situation is, give us a call. 828-393-0134, 828-393-0134.

Speaker 1:

You're listening to the George Real Estate Group radio broadcast here in the queue. Stay tuned in, we'll be right back. Good morning and welcome back. You're listening to the George Real Estate Group radio broadcast here on the Q every Monday morning sharing with you about our local real estate market and community. We're so grateful to be here. Welcome back. We're now in the second half of the show and just grateful to have Lynn Staggs with us here.

Speaker 1:

With the storehouse of Henderson County We've been having that conversation about their upcoming 4th of July fundraiser. Doorhouse of Henderson County. We've been having that conversation about their upcoming 4th of July fundraiser or their current 4th of July fundraiser. That's running from June 1st all the way through the end of July and we'll continue to have that conversation. Before we do that, just a quick snapshot on the market. We're still running about 126 single-family homes a month selling in Henderson County. The demand remains steady. I mean, we've actually seen, actually seen uh year to date. We've seen more homes sold, just a little bit more homes sold this year today versus this year to date last year. The prices are are holding and I always I know lynn loves guessing the average single family home price in henderson county. If you want to take a guess I say 542.

Speaker 1:

The most recent data I have is 539. So you're so close, but 542 is a good guess and we did it when earlier this year we peaked out in the 550s. That's come down a little bit with the average price. The median price is holding, but when we look at what's happening in the supply and demand, I mean the prices are holding. Yes, is it down a little bit from earlier this year, but the fact that we're selling more homes but we are seeing a little bit more inventory on the market, so the market's softening Days on market are taking a little bit longer. Interest rates are holding, but we still see about a third, we see about a third of our sales in Henderson County being purchased with cash. So we still have cash sales and this might come as a surprise. I mentioned in the first segment the number of homes selling in the surrounding counties. Now the average single-family home price in Buncombe County is in the high sixes actually, and the average single-family home price in Transylvania County is in the sevens. Oh, I believe that.

Speaker 1:

So it's fascinating. The market's the market, but, as I say many times, the real estate happens around life. Therefore, life happens, therefore real estate happens, and it could be a really positive reason why you're buying or selling, or it could be a challenging reason. Whatever it might be, we'd love to interview for the job. And if you're thinking ahead with your estate, thinking ahead with your tax planning and, in regards to real estate, we're working with selling, we've helped a lot of our clients with their own land. We've helped a lot of our clients that own real estate portfolios and their investment properties.

Speaker 1:

In regards to what do you do? How do you plan ahead? What should you do? Maybe you might want to consider giving some of your real estate to a nonprofit. I mean, there's different ways to think about things, but whether it's your personal home, investment property, commercial property or raw land, we'd love to have the conversation. Give us a call today 828-393-0134, 828-393-0134. Find us online at realestatebygregcom. You also can follow us on social media and we podcast all of our radio shows. You can certainly share this podcast with your friends and family. So, lynn, you guys have been in the works now for a long time, planning ahead and working on this new building.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and I'm excited because we're busting at the seams of our old building, and I do mean that in the literal sense some days we can only be open three days a week because of space confinements and it's a safety issue. We can't unload a truck and unpack and put everything away while we're operating because we're just space confined. Everybody drives by and they were like but you got that big old building, but we don't have that whole building, we just have the front two units, and so moving 1.7 miles up the road is going to give us almost triple the space.

Speaker 1:

That's incredible, and so your vision of being able to serve more, to help more, your capacity goes up.

Speaker 2:

Yes, our capacity, our days open, being able to offer classes, having cooking classes in there, having other partners come in and be able to use the space to help our clients with issues that they may have. People from the co-op be able to come in and go hey, let's teach you how to cook spaghetti squash. Or you know, here's what you do with this weird vegetable. You don't know what to do with eggplant? Here you can do this. So just teaching people things. You know we pack a box. People go to food pantries. I personally want to do a class called cooking out of the box. So here's your box that you get. What can we do with what you got today?

Speaker 1:

And again, it's sharing the knowledge. It's helping your clientele make the resources go further.

Speaker 2:

Yes, and knowing what to do with the weird vegetables, things that they've never experienced. Some people, unfortunately, have grown up on chicken nuggets and fries and never had sauteed zucchini. So those kind of things, you know, even though for me I'm like, really, those kind of things are the things that we need to be teaching people, we need to be showing them. Here's what you do with fresh stuff.

Speaker 1:

So your clients are getting fresh vegetables? Oh yeah, that's amazing.

Speaker 2:

We get fresh vegetables from Sam's Club. We get them from man of Food Bank. We get them from some of the local farmers here, the Johnson Farm. They give us fresh, fresh vegetables, so we're getting fresh stuff. The orchards give us apples and fruits and so that's amazing. We have a plethora of things. Health food.

Speaker 1:

That again it's being I, uh, I. I recently was at a property and talking about eating fresh vegetables. This property we were at had a farm and had, uh, some crops and they'd recently harvested, uh, some okra no, no, not okra, it was asparagus and there was a few stalks still, uh, that were there and we just snapped the stalks of the asparagus and we ate it right there. It was the most sweet tasting, uh, it's not like asparagus again, it was just eating the.

Speaker 2:

The asparagus right out of the ground was amazing yeah, and and people don't realize too you have a pot on your porch. We have planter beds at our house. I don't buy tomatoes and lettuce and cilantro and stuff. It's right there in my front yard. I just grow it and there's nothing like having your stuff fresh. You walk outside and just pull what you need.

Speaker 1:

My neighbor is so gracious, she grows heirloom tomatoes. Oh my word, and she's so generous and kind and there's nothing better than a fresh cut tomato off the vine. Yes, it's the best, and I think we're coming up.

Speaker 2:

They're going to be getting ready pretty soon. Here the little tomatoes are already popping. It's amazing. The cilantro is I mean. That's going all the time. The lettuce is just coming up. I can't give it away fast enough.

Speaker 1:

But you have this vision for cooking classes. Yes, and for your helping the community through that avenue with this new building.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I want the building to be used as many days a week as we can. That's the purpose of it to help this community, to teach in this community, to get the residents in this community on their feet. Better, more well-versed, better equipped.

Speaker 1:

And this is again. You just finished. This is your 25th anniversary of the storehouse and this year and back in May was your 25th anniversary. And then how appropriate and just again the vision you've had in this new building for the next 25 plus years. I mean it's amazing in the generosity of the community to make it possible the vision you've had to get back to the community. And then I mean it's incredible.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and the thing is is, the building is a simple plan. I just need 13,000 people to donate $150 each and the whole thing's paid for.

Speaker 1:

No problem.

Speaker 2:

Then we have no mortgage and everything that comes in will go to direct program costs.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing.

Speaker 2:

Because we saved money. We purchased the stuff up front and so we didn't have to. You know, we do have a loan, but I don't want to use it. So reach out to your friends, your family. $150 is doable. Some people can do a whole lot more. Some people can go in with their friend and do 75 each which is amazing again, whatever level that you're able to give.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so the, the building, uh, you know the funds which you're working on, but again, we were focusing on fourth of july I mean not that. I mean I mean it's all important, it's all important. So again, these two things are going on at the same time. The 4th of July matching funds, again running through the end of the July reach out, go to their website, call, stop by. I mean, there's so many different ways and we're so thankful for the churches and also Advent Health that we're matching the funds.

Speaker 2:

Yes, because we I mean the $150,000, that gets all of our stuff met, all of our food we're able to purchase, you know, because you can't get everything at one place.

Speaker 1:

Well, and you've shared with us before that the needs have grown Grown extensively.

Speaker 2:

Yes, the needs have grown, grown extensively. Yes, so I mean the matching funds and and this fourth of july match that carries us year to year, the building that will carry us years into the future that's amazing.

Speaker 1:

Well, thank you, lynn, and all your 75 plus volunteers and your staff. That makes it all possible. Always grateful to have you here on the radio. Again, it's important to us to support the Storehouse and our nonprofit community here in the community. It's making a difference in our community.

Speaker 2:

Just visit us at storehouseonlineorg. You can come see us at 1049 Spartanburg Highway or call us at 692-8300.

Speaker 1:

Awesome, lynn. Thank you so much. And to our listeners again, we're just if you can consider volunteering or giving. I mean whether it's with your time or your resources. I mean there's always. I hear from clients moving here from all over. They're so blown away by the generosity but also the volunteer community that we live in and the nonprofit world that's here and people want to get involved and they're joining and they're moving here and they're saying where can I volunteer? And we see this happening frequently. But people are moving here, and also our natives and people that have grown up here again, that have seen and want to give back regularly. And Lynn made a decision to give back and to be a catalyst for our community. So thank you for that.

Speaker 2:

I love here.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I tell people all the time I'm biased. I think we live in one of the most amazing places and the people are amazing and there's two sides of the coin incredible prosperity and there's incredible need. So, again, there's an opportunity to give and to donate and to be generous, and that's what life's so much more than what we make it about. Again, the relationships, the helping others, being kind. Again, it's those things that we'll remember.

Speaker 2:

That's why we sell more houses.

Speaker 1:

We love serving our community through real estate, so we are grateful. We've had an incredible year. Continue to help and continue to advocate for our clients buying and selling. So give us a call 828-393-0134, 828-393-0134. Find us online at realestatebygregcom. Follow us on Facebook, follow our podcast. Speaker 1:

Thinking about estate planning for your real estate. Without a smart approach, the property you leave behind could become an unwelcome burden for your kids. Many children simply don't want to co-manage an inherited house or deal with the tenants. Fortunately, you can prevent that with the right plan. The George Real Estate Group specializes in tax-efficient strategies like 1031 exchanges and Delaware Statutory Trust to simplify inheritance and income planning.
