The Wine Pair Podcast
Special Episode! Meet the (Wine) Makers #14: Roman Roth of Wölffer Estate and Jens Honoré Co-Author and Photographer of the Book Rosé Revolution
Sometimes an interview just feels magical. Like, you just happen to find two people who have amazing stories, who genuinely like each other, and who complement the other in terms of their philosophies and approaches, and that is what we found in this interview with Roman and Jens. Roman makes beautiful wine for Wölffer Estate, so beautiful, in fact, that Jens and his partner Rasmus wanted to include him in their amazing book Rosé Revolution. Look, you may not think you are a Rosé lover, but we think that’s because you don’t know Rosé, and this episode, and this book, are fantastic ways to learn more and appreciate more about Rosé. Roman and Jens have some absolute pearls of wisdom to share, like everyone can make wine in a good year, but the real proof of talent is how good their wine is in tricky years. Another pearl from Roman is that the key to a great wine is found in fighting just the right time to harvest it. The other wonderful thing about his interview is that it encompasses the concept of Rosé Revolution, which is that Rosé is a worldwide phenomenon, and in it you have a Dane, a German, and an American all talking about Rosé wine. What more could you want? Please join us for this awesome conversation!

Introduction to the Interview with Roman Roth and Jens Honoré 00:36
Hello, and welcome to The Wine Pair Podcast! I’m Joe, your sommelier of reasonably priced wine, and for this special episode, I am on my own as my wine pairing partner in crime is busy making cakes for her Baby Cakes micro-bakery, which by the way you can learn more about if you head over to her website lovebabycakes.com.
Now, as a quick orientation to our podcast, what we usually do in each episode is learn about, taste, and review two to three wines that are reasonably priced, which means under $20, and should be easy to find. However, for this special set of episodes, we interview people who are involved in actually making wine. Because part of what we want to do with our podcast is to educate ourselves and you on different aspects of wine knowledge in a fun, entertaining, and unstuffy way, even fun and entertaining as Decanter magazine has called our podcast, and that is what we are doing today!
A small plug before we get to the interview with Roman and Jens - if you like what you are hearing or are interested in hearing our other “regular” episodes, please subscribe to or follow our podcast so you can hear more - especially since you are only getting one half of The Wine Pair Podcast in this episode! You can also go to our website thewinepairpodcast.com to send us a note or subscribe to our newsletter, you can follow us on Instagram at The Wine Pair Podcast, and, if you like what you are hearing, you can even leave us a nice rating and review, we won’t mind!

Interview with Roman Roth and Jens Honoré 02:13
Hello Roman and Jens - and welcome to The Wine Pair Podcast!
We are so happy that you are with us today, and we are really excited to learn more about you both. And this is the first time we have interviewed an author and a winemaker together, so this should be really fun and informative for our listeners. We are looking forward to learning more about your book Rosé Revolution, Jens (Yens), and how you met Roman and all that good stuff, but let’s start out with some background on the two of you.
Interview Questions:
- Tell us a little about yourselves - your background, your family, and any connection to wine in your background. Let’s start with Roman, and then we’ll have you go, Jens.
- Roman, tell us about how you got into winemaking. Was this something you had planned for and pursued, or did it "find" you?
- For Roman, did you have a mentor, or someone who taught you the ropes or was really influential in your journey and career?
- For Roman, what do you think defines you as a winemaker and makes you and your wines special? Do you lean more towards the art or the science of wine (or both)?
- Jens, tell us a little how the idea for the book got started, and how you met Roman.
- Jens, what were you looking for in terms of winemakers? What about Roman fit that expectation or needs you had for the book?
- Jens, what was your experience in terms of photography for the book? What were you hoping to capture and what did you want to show, and what are you particularly happy with?
- Jens, what was your favorite part of the experience of creating the book?
- If we were to invite you to Sunday Night Dinner (a tradition in our Italian American family), what of your wines, Roman, would you bring and why?
- How can people find your wines and the book (your website, social, etc.)?
