Hello and welcome back everyone. Hope that you guys had a great week and I hope that you guys have another great week this week and, yeah, hopefully you can enjoy this. Today we're going to go over the second commandment a little bit and some questions that you might have with the second commandment, and that is you shall not misuse the name of the Lord, your God. That is the second commandment. So some of the questions that are in the Catechism that I'm reading through I guess I should have told you that. So I'm reading through Luther's small Catechism with explanation, and in here they just have some questions that people might have and they're like highlighted red, kind of like in the Bible, you know, jesus's words are highlighted, so the there's. I mean, that's just an example for you guys. But anyway, some questions that we're going to go over today are what does God forbid in the second commandment? How is God's name misused? What is cursing by God's name? What is swearing by God's name? And the last one when are we permitted and even required to swear by God's name? So yeah, I will read those questions and then I will also read the explanation and the answers to those questions. So let's get right into it Okay. So the first question is what does God forbid in the second commandment? And here's the answer In the second commandment God forbids us to misuse his name. Example in Exodus, chapter 20, verse seven, it says the Lord will not hold yep, the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name, and we will keep getting in depth with things here a little bit more. The second question is how is God's name misused? God's name is misused when people speak God's name uselessly or carelessly and they say see Exodus, chapter 20, verse seven for the example. And then, anyway, it's here what you can do. Well, what people do to misuse his name is curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie or deceive by his name.

So I mean I'm sure that we've all heard somebody just like casually talking and they say oh God, and you know, I mean you can fill in the blank yourself, but if you, if you struggle with that, try to replace that saying with something else, you know there's many things that you can just do to replace that. You know, and if you have someone saying that in your everyday life and you're like, okay, this is kind of it's kind of like a little bit annoying and I don't like it because you know it's. It's kind of rude when some people do that, but it's like you know it's their life. But you could just say to them, you know, like, hey, could you not say that please? Or, you know, just, be nice about it, you know, say, hey, I don't like that really, you know, just, I don't know, don't be afraid to say something about it, you know, because then it's like, okay, just build some of your confidence a little bit, you know, and you're sticking up for God's name. So I mean, it's not like you're gonna, you know anyway, okay, the third question what is cursing by God's name?

Speaker 1

Cursing by God's name is blasphemy. Wait, blaspheming. Sorry, that was kind of weird. Leviticus, chapter 24, verse 15,. If anyone curses his yard, he will be held responsible.

Speaker 1

Okay, here are some Bible narratives here. They mocked Jesus when he was hanging on the cross. Matthew, chapter 27, verse 39 through 43. The Assyrian Field Commander blasphemed the God of Israel. Okay, some Jews accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. John, chapter 8, verse 48 through 59. Calling down the anger and punishment of God upon our self sorry one self or any other person or thing. They have another example here with James, chapter 3, verse 9 through 10. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father and with it we curse men who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing my brothers. This should not be. Here are a few more Bible narratives. The people at Jesus' trial cursed themselves and their children Matthew, chapter 27, verse 25. Peter cursed Matthew, chapter 26, verse 74. James and John asked Jesus if they should ask God to destroy a Samaritan village. Luke, chapter 9, verse 51 through 55.

Okay, another question here is what is swearing by God's name? Swearing by God's name is taking an oath in which we call on God to witness the truth of what we say or promise and to punish us if we lie or break our promises. So I mean, let's say that you're like okay, I swear to God that I will go do this for you, you know. And someone is like okay, if you swear to God, you know. And then it's like you shouldn't do that, you know, that's something that we shouldn't do. That's swearing by God's name. That was a question what is swearing by God's name? And yeah, we shouldn't do that, because what happens if you don't do it, you know?

Speaker 1

Okay, the next question when are we permitted and even required to swear by God's name? We are permitted and even required to take an oath by God's name when an oath is necessary for the glory of God or for the welfare of our neighbor. Examples include the following Testimony in court, oath of office, wedding vows Okay, that's pretty good. I mean I'm going to be getting married here soon, so I'll be doing that wedding vow one. So here are a few Bible verses to go with that. Numbers 30, verse 2, fear the Lord, your God, serve Him only and take your oaths in His name. Hebrews 6, verse 16,. Men swear by someone greater than themselves and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.

Speaker 1

Bible narratives. Here here we go. This is the last little thing here. Jesus permitted Himself to be put under oath. Matthew, chapter 26, verse 63 through 64. Abraham put His servant under oath. Genesis, chapter 24, verse 3. So that is some examples for you of when we are required and permitted to swear by God's name. So, yeah, that's some stuff there right there. So, yeah, that's all I got for you. I hope you guys enjoyed it and yeah, I hope you guys are living life and having a good time. Life's fun. So you know, just have a good time, just joke around when you can have fun. Don't take things too far. Know that God's watching you at all times. So, yeah, I'll have your back. Just keep in mind and pray at all times. Okay, thank you for listening. Have a great day, have a great week and God bless.
