Get Ready for Holiness

I Peter 1:13-25
Tim Nay

Part of 1&2 Peter: Standing firm in shifting times

January 25, 2026

13 “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” —I Peter 1:13

1. We will be mentally alert & sober.

2. We will tie up loose thoughts and desires.

5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” —2 Corinthians 10:5

The mind has a “spirit.” In other words, our mind has what we call a “mindset.” It doesn’t just have a view, it has a viewpoint. It doesn’t just have the power to perceive and detect; it also has a posture, a demeanor, a bearing, an attitude, a bent.” — John Piper

22 “to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” —Ephesians 4:22-24

3. We will fix our hope on God’s grace.

“Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace.” — Jerry Bridges

14 “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.” —I Peter 1:14-17

22 “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.” —I Peter 1:22

4. We will be obedient in all our actions.

• Be set apart in your morality.
• Be set apart in your speech.
• Be set apart in your attitude.
• Be set apart in what you watch/read/meditate on.

18 “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” —I Peter 1:18-21

5. We will remember our free gift of salvation had a high cost.

TAKEAWAY: Our obedience invites God into our everyday lives.
