Gianna Diggs:

You are listening to the mompreneur mindset podcast, a space where we empower you to build an aligned business. So you can spend less time on the things you think you should be doing in your business, and more time with the people you love. I am your host, Gianna Diggs. Let's get into it. Welcome back to the show. So in today's episode, we're going to talk about how to manage self care with multiple businesses with my guest, Monisha Taylor. So a little bit about my Nisha, she is a wife and mom of two, she is a former attorney turned legal recruiter. And she's also a postpartum depression and abuse survivor. So more, Nisha is passionate about helping women to build confidence, hope and focus on self care. This led her to her recent business launch to help women get their self care through a discount travel club. And so her goal is to show others that through faith and proper self care, you can heal and enjoy your life. So without further ado, let's get into the interview. Hi, my, Nisha, welcome to the show.

Monisha Taylor:

Hello, thank you for having me.

Gianna Diggs:

Thank you, welcome. I'm happy to have you here. So I'm excited for our conversation today, because we're going to discuss you know how to make time for yourself care, right, as a mom, entrepreneur, of two businesses, and a wife and a mother of two, you know, self care is, is super important when you're managing all these different branches. So my first question is, how do you manage your own time and energy, when you have multiple business to run?

Unknown:

Wow, um, I would like to say I have that all figured out. But I don't. Basically, I would say that I do my best to calendar my time. And then I'm also flexible with my time where if I can find little pockets of time here and there to do things, and I will do get up early, before the kids get up, to try to do some things to just mentally prepare myself and I do a lot of my self care at that time. And then like around lunchtime, I'll you know, record some videos and maybe do some posts. And then in the evenings, that's when I will use my time to like, you know, talk with people talk with customers follow up with people and kind of go from there. So, so I pretty much have my day, kind of like morning, afternoon and evening. And so far, that's been working for me, I'm quite sure at some point, I'll end up changing my schedule again. But for right now, that's that's been working, that's been allowing me to get things done, because I do work full time. So you kind of have to, you know, kind of put things through your, you know, in your schedule and kind of be willing to change things around if necessary. Like, of course, I have to make adjustments for like appointments and stuff like that. But I tried to keep my schedule flexible, but I do live by a calendar. So I just said all that to say I live by my calendar.

Gianna Diggs:

Right? I love that. Because a lot of people don't. And I feel like I I had a calendar, and even in college, like, you know, or even in high school, you know, we had our I had my planner. And I feel like I lost that as an adult. And I think it was because I had to have it. It was like, Okay, I know, I need to write out when I have a paper do I need to read it when I have a test too. And so it's easier for me to kind of keep track of that. But I feel like as an adult, it kind of was just like flying by the seat of my pants. And then once I stepped into entrepreneurship, it was like, oh, no, that has to change. You know, like, I can't fly by the seat of my pants, because I got to pick up my daughter when she was in daycare at this time. Or, you know, now it's like she has to be at school at this time. So now my calendar is like you can't book me from like, you know, 1230 to like three or 230 Because I'm blocking off time to get my daughter from school. So, exactly. So I love that you was talking about just like living by your calendar. So do you have any, like, favorite tips on how to practice your self care? Or even just, you know, you kind of touched on it, but like how to carve out that time? You know, like, what kind of like, what's your like, what's your process, if that makes sense?

Unknown:

Sure. So of course it varies. I've been doing a self care challenge, where you literally can do anything for self care. And that could be like I said, a long shower with aromatherapy. balm via now you can get those steamer bombs and put them in your shower. You can stretch for 10 minutes, you can listen to your favorite music for five minutes and say, okay, look, I need a dance break, I'm going to listen to this song for five minutes. Or you know, of course, you can do meditation, yoga, breathing, box breathing, that's one of my favorite things to do. If my day is just crazy. And I'm starting to feel overwhelmed and I'm starting to feel tense, I will stop. And I will just breathe. And even the Apple Watch has like a mindfulness thing where it literally tracks anything that you do for mindful Ness. So I did a meditation on peloton the peloton app this morning. And my my Apple Watch tracked it and said, Oh, you've done 10 minutes of mindfulness, you know. So there's definitely different things you can do for self care ideas, I definitely try to share those in my blog. Because I know as a busy mom, when you're overwhelmed, you're not going to sit and be like, Okay, what can I do for self care? Like that's not right, that's the farthest thing from your mind is like, you just need to have things that you can quickly do to kind of reset yourself. So you can go about your day and do the things you need to do. And that's, that's what those little self care nuggets can do for you.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. And I liked that you. You mentioned just the timeframe of it of like, oh, you can do that for five minutes. You can do this for 30 minutes. Because I think, as a society, we always we look at self care. And we're like, oh, we gotta carve out an hour for self care. And then, you know, if you're a new mom, or if you have three kids, you're like, well, when where do I have an hour to carve out self care Exactly. And so I love that, you know, that's something that I work on. And I mentioned all the time too, is love, like, okay, self care can be a minute of just a breathing, exercise and breathing. Be exactly dancing, have a dance party with your child, include your kids. And I think that's so important for us to understand because especially as moms, because a lot of times we don't feel that our we're even worthy for self care. Because we don't we feel like oh, I don't have the time for that. And that one minute that one minute could have just have just breathing could have helped you with your entire day when things are crazy.

Unknown:

Exactly, exactly. Like I've been doing a 30 day self care challenge on my social media pages. And I give people little things to do every day. And I'm like here, this is your self care task for the desk. today. Go do it. So today was 10 minutes of stretching, you know, the other day was clean out a drawer the other day was take a long shower. Another day was dance to your favorite song, like as little quick things that you can do that don't take all day to do.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. And that's the key is knowing that it doesn't take all day

Monisha Taylor:

doesn't take all day and you feel better. Right?

Gianna Diggs:

So what are your tips for setting priorities and lino like avoiding burnout? Because I think that's something we, we all kind of, especially when you're new in business, and you're trying to get things done. And you feel like you, you don't have anyone helping you at that point, right? You're probably a solopreneur. And burnout is the key thing that kind of stops moms from kind of moving forward, because it's just like, I don't you just you don't have the time. And now you're like, Oh, you're just all over the place. Right? So like, how do you set those priorities and avoid it, do your self care?

Unknown:

Listen to yourself. Listen to yourself. The to me, the first sign of burnout is when you feel overwhelmed, your brain feels foggy, you can't seem to remember anything, you can't seem to focus on any one thing. And your everything just feels like it's caving in on you. Like I feel like, at least in my situation, that's the first sign of burnout. And that's when I take a day. I take a day to take a mental health day. Whatever it is, even if I can't take off from work, I may not work my business that day. But I give myself a break. Give myself a break. I think that's the only thing you can do. And it may it may be a day, maybe two days, it's whatever you need to reset. Because we have as entrepreneurs we have this habit of just go go go go go right nope, I'm working. I'm working weekends. I'm working Monday through Friday. I gotta keep going, I gotta keep going and you don't listen to your body. And if you don't listen to your body, your body will stop you. Right. So when you see those signs when you can't focus when you're feeling overwhelmed when you're feeling anxious and it's hard to breathe. Then you're like Okay, nope, I needed I need to listen to that. And I need to shut it down. Right? It'll be it'll be there tomorrow.

Gianna Diggs:

Right? Oh, I love it. That's

Unknown:

what I do. Yeah, I live I listen for those for those body cues, where I just can't seem to relax. I can't seem to focus. I can't seem to breathe. Okay, I need to take a break. I need to take a break. It happened to me not too long ago. And I literally just shut everything down that day. I didn't do not one thing. Next day, I felt better.

Gianna Diggs:

I definitely can relate to that. Because I've had moments of like, I just I need a week. You know, it's like, because I did overwork myself. And I burned out and I was like, I need a week of just doing nothing. And I gave myself that. And you said something, it's my pregnancy brain is kicking in right now. He said something I wanted to I wanted to touch on and I lost, it'll be there tomorrow. Oh, yes, thank you. Girl, I love to

Unknown:

choose it is real, it doesn't come back either. It was just know that your child's gonna be real smart. Because they can all your brain taking them off. Your child's gonna be very smart. Just know. Hopefully, he's smart, like your sister. So both of my kids are very smart. And mommy can't remember nothing. They don't took all my brain says.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. But I love that you said that. It'll be there tomorrow. Because I think that I think that speaks the hustle culture. Right. And that speaks to people that are just like, do it now. You know, like, yes, we know what that Tomorrow is not promised, obviously. Right? Like, with everything going on in the world. We know that Tomorrow is not promised. That's not that's a given. But just this this thing of like, it has to get done tonight. Right? Like, I can't wait until tomorrow. And it's just like that you give?

Unknown:

Yeah, if you give yourself a heart attack or stroke, because you didn't give yourself a break. It won't be there tomorrow.

Gianna Diggs:

Right?

Unknown:

Right. So that's literally what it's about. Your mental health is your physical health. Like if you can literally give yourself a physical ailment because you didn't take care of your brain.

Gianna Diggs:

Right, that's a word. In my head, I'm like, That's a quote. That's a word. You know, and it because it's it's true.

Unknown:

Physical health, it really is your mind is in control of everything. Everything. Every bodily function, everything. So if you don't take care of your mind, your body will not be able to function not too long after that.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. And I think we don't realize that. I think a lot of times we you know, based off our medical, you know, the medical field, and it's always well, this was the cause. And that's the cause. And a lot of times it's because we're not allowing ourselves to just

Unknown:

you know, it is it stressed. Stress is a killer. A right is stress. Stress is a killer. Stress is the main cause behind most physical ailments. Many times you go to the doctor, and I'll say, Oh, I don't know what caused this. Are you under a lot of stress? Like they'll ask

Gianna Diggs:

you, right? Because what's going on in your life?

Unknown:

What's going on in your life? Oh, well, you know, this happened. And that happened. Okay, well, yeah, you're stressed, you need to find a better way to handle your stress, like doctors will tell you this, right? That's proof right there that your mind is in control of everything. It's just proof right there, how your mind can not handle the stress, that you're not going to be able to function.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. And that's so important because we again, going back to like I said, with you juggling two you have your full job, you have your you're juggling multiple businesses, you have your wife, you have your kids, we can't we can't wear all these hats if we're stressed out and, and not allowing just five minutes to ourselves. Oh, yeah. That's, that's the key. So I want to touch a little bit on guilt, right? I kind of talked about how we we don't feel like we're worthy of of self care. But I want to, like how do you deal with feeling guilty or selfish, right? Because a lot of times it's like, oh, like self care. We always say self care is not selfish, but a lot of people feel it is right. How do you deal with those feelings? And you know, in trying to take time for yourself.

Unknown:

I make sure that when I take time for myself, it's not taking away time from my family. So that's why I get up early. or I take breaks throughout my day when my kids are at school, or I, you know, do things for myself when they've gone to bed. So I do I focus on myself care when I'm alone, usually. So that way, it doesn't feel like I'm taking away time from my kids now will I go out with some friends and leave my husband with the kids every once in a while? Sure. And I do that all the time, you know. And to me, self care is daily. It's how I get through today, I have to do something for myself care daily, if I don't I feel off, huh. And I literally don't get as many things done in the day that I need to get done. And I need to do a lot of things every day. So I have to take time for myself. I lately I was I was being lazy and sleeping later than I should. And I realized I wasn't getting my self care. And I because I was I was running out of time in the mornings. So I was literally getting up right just in time to start getting myself ready and then getting the kids ready. And I was like, this is not working. I'm not getting myself care in because my self care. Like I was telling you before I meditate. I journal, I listen to some motivational books or videos. I do my visualization, visualization, I do affirmations, I do all these things to get ready for my day. And I was sleeping later. And I did not have time to do any of that. Hmm. And I just I was filling off. And I could tell and I was like, Okay, I need to get up. So I got up earlier today. And I had time literally for all of that. In my date, my day was automatically better.

Gianna Diggs:

And I think you just touched on two things that came to mind. First priority, right? And making sure that it becomes a priority. And a lot of times, we Oh, I forgot to do it. It's okay. And like I and I can speak from experience. Oh, I didn't journal today. Okay, I didn't join it the next day, right? And then the next day, and now it's no longer a habit because you're not, you're not doing it. So I really love that you touched on the fact that you made a priority and the fact that you have self awareness of it. Right. Like you're like, okay, something's off. Right. And I think that just comes with prioritizing. Yes. And so I love that, that that's something that you mentioned. So what advice would you give that that Mom, mom entrepreneurs, she might be just starting, or you know, she could just not be practicing herself care. And she's really struggling to make time for herself. She's maybe not seeing self care as a priority. Like what would you tell her

Unknown:

you have to make time in your schedule for it if it means getting up earlier if it means staying up later. So you could just have five minutes to breathe, or 10 minutes to stretch, or a few minutes to journal or do a gratitude journal or we read something that feeds your spirit. Like any of those things, you have to take the time to do something for you. Because if you don't take care of you, you won't be able to take care of those around you who needs you. So you know we live in very stressful times. In life is crazy. And your mind will wander into these horrible horrible thoughts. Right not take the time to control it and focus on the positive. All those things for self care help you focus on the positive it helps you to focus on loving yourself. It helps you to focus on loving those around you. You know they always say if you don't love yourself, how can you love others? So it teaches you to love yourself, do the things that bring you joy, so that you can lovingly care for others?

Gianna Diggs:

Yeah, love that. So before we go, can you let the listeners know where they can find you online?

Unknown:
