Yolanda Spearman:

Hey Deanna, thank you so much for having me.

Gianna Diggs:

I'm excited to speak with you today because we're going to be talking about clarity and the power of clarity, and I think that as mom entrepreneurs a lot of times, we lack clarity in certain areas in our life and in our business. And so I'm so excited to speak with you today about this topic. So talk to me about what was going on in your life, that made you realize that you were lacking clarity.

Yolanda Spearman:

Okay, sure. So, again, thank you so much for having me. 2017 January, I just had our youngest son, he may have been about six or seven months a year old. I received a text message, from someone who basically, very long story short, Said that he had proof that, my husband and his wife had an affair and it had been going on for so long. he actually, you know, Was very colorful in the text message. And so of course, I was devastated. I was of course heard, I was confused. I was, okay, do I stay? Do I go, what am I going to do? So at that, during that timing of, Yeah, this happened. What am I going to do? I definitely needed some clarity, definitely, needed to figure out, like I said, do I stay? And if I stay, what does that look like? Do I leave? If I leave? What does that look like? Because not only did I have my youngest son, but we also had a, Our daughter was, uh, I wanna say two or three at the time. And then we have some older children. So I wasn't, and I'm not saying that anyone should ever say because of, you know, children or anything like that, but these are some things that I, you know, had to consider, well, if I leave, how is this going to not only impact me? How's it gonna impact my older kids? How is it gonna impact my younger kids if I stay? What does that look like? So, just a whole gamut of confusion and. You hear the little munchkins in the background, I apologize, but just the whole gamut of what, what am I going to do? And I definitely needed some type of clarity, surrounding that.

Gianna Diggs:

Hmm. I think that's powerful in that you, most people, When stuff is going on in their life, right? It's, it's always a reactionary thing. And the fact that you just, you use the clarity to, to help you make the one of the biggest decisions that you would've had to make. I think that's powerful. So what strategies, have you found to be helpful in creating the clarity for your life and now in your business?

Yolanda Spearman:

Sure. So, I am not sure if they continue to do this in the schools, but I know when I was growing up, when they would teach us about fire safety, they would always say, okay, you going to stop, drop and roll. And so those are just some three basic strategies and things that just stuck out with me. So, stop to acknowledge where you are. And that can be in life, that can be as a entrepreneur, that can be in your business. Where are you? I'm here and this is where I want to go, but right now I don't have, all of the money to be run that multimillion dollar business that I want to, run. But I have$500 to get started, you know, just acknowledging where you are. Stop to acknowledge where you are and then, drop. I just use that for drop the facade,

Gianna Diggs:

Hmm. I

Yolanda Spearman:

and change your, you know, just change your station. Because as a, as a mom, as a woman, as a wife, you know, you have so many things that are going on in your head. You can't do it. You're too old, you're too young, you're too this, you're too that. So you have to change your, you know, station. Um, and stop listening to all of that, stinking thinking. Either it's from without or from within. And then for roll, I just said, you know, you just gotta roll with it. You're gonna have some rollercoaster days. Some days are gonna be good, some days are gonna be not so good. But just expected and roll with it, in life and like it's definitely in business. There things are gonna happen. And then don't rush. Just you stay your course. Your course is your course. Your mompreneur journey is your mompreneur journey, no one else's. And you, you know, do what you need to do, in order to fulfill the purpose that you know you have for your life.

Gianna Diggs:

I like that. Stop dropping. Roll. That's easy. I think the kids, I'm like, I should ask my five year old, do you use, stop dropping. I hope you, you stop dropping roll in school. But I love how you, you took something that we all know and, and that, that's your process. Cuz that, that feels easy. I think a lot of times it comes to clarity, it's like we make the process so hard. Right. It's like we, we make it like, I'm not sure. I don't know. And then, you know, you're going back and forth and you go through your, the seven stages of grief. Right. You know, whether something grieving happened or not, right? You walk through that, all the, that whole process when you're, when you're trying to gain clarity, whether it's, you know, do you. Create this program in your business or, you know, what created your thing of, do I stay with my husband who I just found out was cheating? Right? Like,

Yolanda Spearman:

Great.

Gianna Diggs:

and so I, I love that. It's just stop drop, and roll with it because we make things so hard.

Yolanda Spearman:

Yeah, I, I think so. I don't know if they still teach that. So for all of my firefighter moms out there, entrepreneurs and your listening audience, if that is not the case, then just let it just apply to just seeking clarity. And for me it just has to be simple, you know, like you said, that stop dropping, roll. It just has to be simple and then just go with it from there.

Gianna Diggs:

Right. And I think that's, that's where we gain the most clarity is when we simplify it.

Yolanda Spearman:

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Gianna Diggs:

So what are, what are some of the biggest obstacles, like when you're creating clarity in your life and

Yolanda Spearman:

Okay. Sure. So, silencing, and I'm, I'm speaking from me, and, I think it may resonate with other entrepreneurs silencing that inner critic within, um, the one that says, no, you can't, or you two this, or you two that. So just silencing that inner critic. And then unfortunately, sometimes it's the critics of those without, so those who may be closest to you. So silencing those critics. And then comparing myself to others. That's, that's something that I am definitely learning to undo. Like I said earlier, my journey is my journey. Your journey is your journey. We can look to one another for inspiration, but we don't need to compare ourselves to one another. Looking through the lens of someone else to gain my clarity, funny. We're a family of seven and out of that seven, four of us wear glasses. My husband, my oldest daughter, myself and my youngest daughter now, if I picked up my youngest daughter's glasses to see through, even though I need some clarity, but if I look through her glasses, It's still gonna be blurry. I'm still not gonna be able to undersee anything because I'm looking at it through her lens. So I need to make sure that I'm looking through my lens to gain my perfect clarity and not through someone else's. And then finally, I would say just, overcoming perfectionism. I am just, Unlearning that and learning that. Progress. Making progress, making progress, making progress because when you, I'm a perfectionist, it will paralyze you. And when you're paralyzed, you're not able to do anything or offer anything to anyone. So just those are the things that are probably the biggest obstacle. I've had.

Gianna Diggs:

I love the analogy of glasses cuz it's, it's so funny because my niece wears glasses and my daughter, she has, she can see she doesn't need any glasses. I wear contacts. I'm probably the only one, my husband, he has. Perfect vision. And so I guess my daughter takes after her

Yolanda Spearman:

Right?

Gianna Diggs:

um, my mom is the same way. We all, and my grandmother, we all have glasses and things, right? And I tell her all the time, like, don't put on your cousin's glasses. I wanna wear glasses. I'm like, you can't see. I can see. No, you can't. And I say all that to say that A lot of times we look at the gurus and we look at those who have multimillion dollar businesses, or we look at the people who have our dream lives and not that we can't learn from them. That's. Obviously not what I'm saying because you're there. People are learning from us today listening to this episode, but it's discerning that. They may be able to direct you in, you know, learning things that you are not aware of. But at the end of the day, they, like you said, this is your journey. This is your journey in business, and the decisions that you wanna make in your business are still, you talk about perfectionism, but are still perfect in that it's meant for you. Right. And even if you do stumble, if we don't make mistakes, like how will we learn? And I think. And I'm glad you said you're learning, cuz I definitely, am learning about that perfectionism, because it's, it's stifled me in so many ways and like I don't want that for anyone else.

Yolanda Spearman:

right. right. Most definitely a monster that we all need to, we all need to tame and I'm definitely, like I said, we have older kids. Our oldest is 27 and our youngest is six. So, things differently with group two than with group one. And definitely making sure that we let group two know, Hey, just do do your best. It's not about perfectionism cuz you'll drive yourself crazy. Make progress. How did you do today? Did you feel you did your best? Yes. Great. No. Okay. Well, what can we do to improve upon that, you know, in the future?

Gianna Diggs:

right. And I love that you're teaching your kids that, cuz I don't think we were, you know, we were taught that. Right.

Yolanda Spearman:

Mm-hmm. Right,

Gianna Diggs:

So for you, especially when you have young kids, it's so important. So how do you know when you found your clarity?

Yolanda Spearman:

right. So I believe, honestly, that there's a sense of peace. You know, that resonates from within. And even if you are afraid or you're nervous, or you've had this idea for a business and it's like you got these butterflies in your stomach, But you know that, you know that, you know that this is something that you are supposed to do. You've received the clarity. This is the lane that you're supposed to be in. There's a sense of, okay, I don't know how I'm gonna do it. I don't even know, who's gonna be able to help me do this? I've got a ton of butterflies. But if I don't do this, not only will I not be walking in my purpose, but I'll also cause others to miss out on what I'm supposed to be offering them. Um, so I believe that's how you know when you're able to do it. even when you're, I think I said at one point, you're nerve guided, so you're nervous and you're excited, or you're afraid, but you have that peace, you know, you have that peace, that comes from within so that no matter what happens, This is what I'm supposed to do. This is what I'm supposed to do.

Gianna Diggs:

Hmm. I love that inner peace, and I think, I'm glad you said that because a lot of times we don't listen for that. And we or we ignore it and. You know, having that understanding of like, okay, I don't know what's gonna happen. And, and I think trust too is what kind of just came to me, is trusting that it's, it's gonna be okay. And, you know, I'm so scared to put this out there and do these things, but I trust that everything's gonna work in my highest, for my highest good.

Yolanda Spearman:

right. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. And it is scary. Like you're doing something new. you may be doing something new for the first time, but. I think someone said you'll know that you found your passion. When you know you do something, even if no one pays you for it. Now, obviously as entrepreneurs, we wanna get paid, you know, for what we do. It's that drive. I think it speaks more to that drive that's within you. Um, that you're doing it. You know what, regardless of if the pay is 5 million or$5, of course, you know, like I said, we want the pay, but that's not what's motivating you. It's that purpose and that drive that's within you that's motivating you.

Gianna Diggs:

Mm-hmm. Yeah. That's important too because, you know, nowadays all the, you, all you see is you can make this in your sleep and you should do this, and this is gonna make you all the money. But I'm always like, okay, that's great, but in five years are you gonna be happy that you're doing that?

Yolanda Spearman:

Exactly right. Yeah. Yeah.

Gianna Diggs:

Because it, because the money, does it matter anymore after a certain amount of time?

Yolanda Spearman:

yeah, there, I don't think there's anything that can compare to peace, right. Um, to making sure that you are mentally and emotionally okay. So, yeah.

Gianna Diggs:

All right. So once you've created clarity for your business or your life, right, how do you make sure that it lasts?

Yolanda Spearman:

Sure. So I think, that whether you're finding clarity, creating clarity, it's evolving. So it's not once you say, okay, I'm going to have this particular business, that's it, it evolves in, how you're going to go about doing the business and maybe what worked for doing the business. Today is not what's going to work for doing the business next year and what works for doing the business next year is not gonna work for running the business in 20 years. So just making sure that whatever you're doing, it still aligns with your vision of clarity. But being open to trying new avenues, you know, I was just thinking there's more than one way to get to Texas from Chicago. You can, and I am not about to tell you how, how to get there, which road to take, anything like that. I should have probably Googled that. But there's more than one way to get to a destination. So if the first destination works for you or the first way works for you in this area and you're trying it again and it doesn't work, just say, Hey, you know what, there's another way that I can go. So just being open. But again, just making sure that whatever it is, that it is, aligning with your clarity that you, you know, said from the get-go.

Gianna Diggs:

Hmm. I like, I like that. Make sure it aligns with your clarity. That's cool. So what advice would you give to a mom, entrepreneur who is really struggling to maintain, clarity in her life, in her business?

Yolanda Spearman:

Sure. So I would say, don't allow fear to hold you back. Um, do it even while you're feeling afraid, because fear it's a natural human feeling, right? It's so do it even when you're afraid, because you. You will miss out on so many things that, it's for you to have if you're not doing it simply because you're allowing fear to hold you back from doing it. Unlearn some things you've learned, like those things that we learned as when we were younger. That have stayed with us and, that have unfortunately planned out in negative thoughts and, and negative behaviors and I can't do it and I'm not good enough. And all of those things just unlearn those things and when they come back, just put a d n R on it. Like, don't rest, don't, do not resuscitate it. Just keep it there and don't allow it to impede on the progress or the clarity that you have. I also. Think that you need to believe that you're capable. And that goes back with unlearning the things that you've learned. So believing that you're capable, write the vision, and then get your tribe. And your tribe can consist of whomever you trust enough to allow into your inner sanctum, cause you can't let everyone know your heart or your vision, anything like that. But there are those who are in your life, whether they're blood related, whether they're a coworker, whatever the case may be, get your tribe because they're the ones that's going to help you, on this journey of not only, maintaining your clarity for yourself, but maintaining clarity, for the business and making sure that you are going the right way that you need to go, and then extending grace to yourself. We can be some of the, we can really be down on ourselves, like we can extend grace to everyone under the sun, but when it comes to ourselves, we don't extend that same grace. So I would just, definitely advise, the entrepreneurs out there to extend to yourself the same grace that you would extend to someone else.

Gianna Diggs:

Mm. I love all that you said because I'm like, that's true. That's, oh, that's definitely true. Especially that last one with,, extending yourself grace, because, you know, I had a moment recently of, oh, I didn't get this thing done, or I didn't, in my perfectionism, I didn't get something submitted that I wanted. Right. And. And the extent of myself, grace, I just realized, well, it's just time to pivot and do it differently than what I wanted to do. But that comes with all the other steps that you said before that. And so I'm glad that, that that was the advice that you gave and I hope that that helps someone out there. So, Yolanda, before we go, and wrap up, can you please let everyone know where they can find you online?

Yolanda Spearman:

Sure. So I am on Facebook and Instagram, Yolanda y Spearman. And it's y o l a n d a y s p e a r m a n. That's website. That's Facebook, and that's Instagram.
