A simple rule can change a life: go make someone’s day better. That’s the heartbeat of our conversation with Jacob Barneck, who turned a devastating car crash at fifteen into a mission to uplift 10,000 people through practical optimism, community, and the smart use of tools that reduce pain and spark joy.

Jacob walks us through the early 90s reality of accessibility, where ADA momentum met gaps at school and in daily life. That friction trained a problem solver: move obstacles, ask for help, adapt fast. He shares how supplements eased daily pain, why small rituals matter, and how hope can be grounded in real progress from neuroprosthetics, spinal stimulation, and evolving rehab science. Yet the core isn’t just tech. It’s people. It’s the micro-moments—smiles, kind words, a high five—that build trust and change the direction of a day.

We also make room for the texture of life: Texas culture summed up in brisket, football, and faith. Jacob’s goal is specific—impact 10,000 people—and that number isn’t vanity. It’s a compass that keeps him serving, sharing, and showing up. If you’re navigating disability, caregiving, or just looking for a way to feel useful again, this story gives you a clear starting point: choose one person today and lift them. We’ll do the same. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review to help more people find this conversation.

Catchphrase And Mission To Uplift

SPEAKER_01

I have a catchphrase I, you know, that I'm always sending out there to everybody is go make someone's day better. Right? So if you can get out there and go make someone's day better, that makes your day better.

SPEAKER_02

What's up, guys? It's Squadfather and Life to the Max. And we're back at it again at the Ability Sun X Foods and Dallas. Please enjoy this Life to the Max VK.

SPEAKER_00

Just a couple of months, I'm trying to get back.

Abilities Expo And Meeting Community

SPEAKER_02

And today I have the honor to speak to what's from us.

SPEAKER_01

Jacob Barnick.

SPEAKER_02

Jacob, thank you so much for being on the show.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, thank you for inviting me, man. It's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

What made you come out to the Abilities Expo today?

SPEAKER_01

Man, I uh I've always, you know, I've been in my chair for about 34 years now, and I've always been uh, you know, I I like meeting other individuals no matter where I go. Um, if someone else is in a chair or has some sort of disability, they know who I am. So I just like to come and meet people and understand what they're doing. Because uh, I think you you know your mom mentioned I my goal is to positively influence the lives of 10,000 people. So I'm just out there trying to make that happen.

SPEAKER_02

But we got 9,000 subscribers. There you go.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

So hopefully that hits 10,000 people. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well man, well we'll I'll put some stuff out there. Hopefully, we've uh in the in the in the ether, in the universe, we'll get some people going for this.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so tell me uh what you want to do. Like uh what do you want to explain?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so so the biggest thing for me, like you know, I've kind of been you know, obviously I've been you know who I am, but like I've been coasting for a long time, really just kind of just hanging out, not really getting out there and making people feel better, right? And so my you know, I have a catchphrase I you know that I'm always sending out there to everybody is go make someone's day better, right? So if you can get out there and go make someone's day better, that makes your day better, right? So it's that's what I want to do. And so I started, you know, taking some some supplements that have helped me and completely change the pain in my life and other things. And so I, you know, that's kind of motivated me to be like, hey, other people need to feel good throughout the day, right? And no matter if it's them taking something or if they're just getting someone to give them a high five or a smile, that's that's why I'm here, right? I just want to make sure that everybody's happy.

The Accident And Early Recovery

SPEAKER_02

So Jacob, we kind of forgot about the big elephant in the room. Uh what what exactly happened to you?

SPEAKER_01

Oh man, when I was 15, I was in a car accident. Oh no. Um, just a fluke accident. Me and my little brother and uh two other people were in a car, and we I lived in a small town about four uh of about forty five hundred people growing up, and I lived ten miles outside of that town. And my friend brought me back home and we were going to a football camp and I was tying my shoes and she like lost control of the car going home. And uh we we we went off a hill, we we we jumped off a ditch basically, like a four-foot cliff, hit a ditch and rolled. I was thrown out sometime during that time frame. I got a skull fracture, almost ripped my eyelash off, and I broke my back. L1, L2. Um, and so I spent you know seven weeks in the hospital learning how to live in a wheelchair. Um I can I can move my left leg and I was able to walk with canes and crutches for a long time. What year was this? 1992.

SPEAKER_02

So the ADA was just getting started.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Um, which I think is pretty cool for me. Like, you know, when when I first got in my chair, my high school didn't have ramps everywhere. Yeah. Right. So I I learned how to get up and down. Luckily, thankfully, I did have full functions of my arms. So I I could get up and down stairs, you know, through moving things around and do stuff. So it gave me the opportunity to to be a problem solver in my life as well. So um, you know, I I luckily I was very positive at the beginning, and I just looked for it as you know, it's nothing I can do about it. Let I got it. Let's just see what we can do next, right? Like, like let's look forward to the future.

ADA Era And Problem Solving

SPEAKER_02

Well, there's so much promising stuff going on in the in in this like uh department where it comes to like neuroprosthetic implants, or if it comes to stem cells, like I think everyone like there's like there's hope. Like there's hope with everything and people are working on things diligently to get us out of these chairs, whether it's nine years like me from uh like a car accident when I was in the military, or if it's 35 years from you like I I think there's uh then I think that goes back to what you're trying to do, you're trying to spread past to ten thousand people, my ten thousand.

Hope In Neuro Tech And Big Goals

SPEAKER_01

And it was just a number that I needed to get to, right? So it's like I if I can get to ten thousand, then there's something else we can do, right? It's just you know, if thousand sounded okay, but just ten thousand, I think that's just something that there's real impact there, right? You you know that you've done something good. So 10,000, like emotes, emojis, and no, you know, honestly, I'd I'd I I want to physically impact the lives of 10,000 people, right? So they either need to, you know, see what I'm doing or your meet me or be a part of you know some of the positive notes that I put out online, whatever that is, right? It could be likes, etc. etc. But I'd really like to physically meet about 10,000 people and make them happy.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'm trying to impact you right now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you totally did too. I was super excited, man, and I'm so so impressed with you. I I yeah, you know, when at the age that I'm at, I'm like, you know, I don't I don't really think about this kind of technology stuff until this recently. Like you've been doing a podcast, and I saw some of the stuff you've done already. It's so amazing. So thank you so much for setting that example too.

SPEAKER_02

I want yeah, I I wanted to like get my voice out there and let everybody share their story, whether it's a girl that went through uh you know domestic abuse, or if it's a person in a wheelchair, someone with a a mess. I want them to be able to share their story. That's that's why I started this. And uh it's you can see from the episode episode one in 2021 the progression and the difference in my behavior and attitude. Yeah, because it's like I'm helping people, so I feel like honored and privileged to do that. To do that, it's uh uh amazing thing, and I love like touching the hearts of people too. Probably not 10,000, that's a lot. You'll get there, man.

Storytelling, Podcasting, And Impact

SPEAKER_01

You'll get there. I think you'll do more than that. Like just looking at what you've got now for sure. I think that's gonna happen for you. So, and I forgot that your your your mom told me that I had to mention the lights in my wheelchair, right? So yeah, let's talk about those. Yeah, man. Like again, it's just one of those things that you kind of have to put yourself out there. Like, you know, everybody that I've seen as I've come around the expo, they're like, Oh man, I love your lights. And that's just one more person that I get to say hi to and introduce myself to, and and hopefully in the they it you know, brought a smile to their face, and that's you know, that's positively impacting them a little bit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but super sick, man. Like, I mean, and it's like Durant makes it look makes it look like yeah, like people like put spinners on their wheels back then. Remember, or they tune up their cars, we could tune up our wheelchairs, yeah. I mean, uh to Jacob, it was uh honor having you on. Oh, I I do have a question. Do you live in Texas?

SPEAKER_01

I do, I live just up the road in Plano.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, all right. Would you say Texas is just these three things? Brisket, football and Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Totally. Yeah, I just have to say that. Like it's brisket slash barbecue, right? Like anything barbecue for sure, and then you know, football in Texas is like no matter what, it's always there.

SPEAKER_02

There's always such good prospects in Texas.

Wheelchair Lights And Connection

SPEAKER_01

Texas is crazy, and they start them. You you you're playing like you you start playing when you're five, you know, tackle football really early here in Texas for sure. And then there this is a very, very um religious state for sure.

SPEAKER_02

It's my well, it's my first time I'm from Chicago, so it's my first time like being in Texas, and I was just I had barbecue, it was amazing. I forgot the place, what it was called, but it was absolutely amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Uh just melting your mouth.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like and I like I thought the birds get was gonna be dry. No, that bird skin freaking melt in my mouth. It was so good. And uh last thing, uh, you talked about you were going to a football camp when uh wasn't it and you were senior when I saw I was a sophomore actually, so um my freshman year, um, I played you know JV.

SPEAKER_01

Um I was hoping to play soft, you know, varsity my sophomore year, or I was a wide receiver and a strong safety, and uh I could run pretty fast because I ran my entire life. I really off the field, yeah. On and off the field. Like my parents would tell me all the time, they're like, Can you stop running? I would run, I ran track as well. So I would after practice, I'd run to the locker room, you know, and people are like, Man, what are you? I was like, Man, I just love to run. It is one of those things.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so guess my mile.

SPEAKER_01

Your mile? Yeah, before or after, no. So um, I'm gonna say what uh 520? 419. No man, that's pretty sweet, boys.

Texas Culture: Barbecue, Football, Faith

SPEAKER_02

Six foot three, and I was I think I was 195.

SPEAKER_01

6'3, 195 in a 419 mile. That's pretty awesome. I barely make a 419 mile in my wheelchair.

SPEAKER_02

So it's Jacob, it was great having you on the show. Uh Burst Get Jesus and at uh football. You're a Cowboys fan, I'm guessing. Yeah, yeah. Uh well, I'm a Bears fan, so uh that's all right.

SPEAKER_01

We can we can still be friends, we just won't talk about football.

SPEAKER_02

All right, well, uh if uh you guys enjoy this content, then please like, comment, and subscribe. And as always, take a breath for me. Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_00

I'm on 10 so trying to dive my ponies. Am I the next best thing? But I think I'm the closest.
