Why Travel Feels Like A Setback

Welcome to the Highly Effective Man podcast hosted by former Navy SEAL turned Life and Fitness Coach. I'm your host, JP Bolwan. This podcast is your resource for unlocking the healthiest, most productive, highly effective man within you. Let's go. What's up, guys? Welcome back to the Highly Effective Man Podcast. I'm your host, JP Bolwan, and I'm coming at you guys from Vegas this week. Uh I'm traveling with uh my wife's family, and we're hanging out in Vegas, and so I felt like this would be a good opportunity to talk about nutrition while traveling. So if traveling for work, family, or life keeps wrecking your nutrition, or if you feel like every trip turns into damage control, this episode is gonna show you how to eat healthy while traveling without having to track macros and stressing and starting over. So that way you can come home feeling sharp instead of like you like you've fallen behind. And this isn't about perfection, it's about standards that will travel with you. So the three big things that we're gonna talk about is number one, why travel doesn't ruin discipline, a lack of standards does. Number two, how to eat for control, energy, and performance on the road. And then number three, the simple rules that highly effective men can use anywhere in the world. A lot of guys think that travel is a great excuse to just let their diet go by the wayside, right? They say, I'm on the road, it's okay, or you know, the food options suck, or I don't have anywhere to cook, you know, I'll just get back on track when I'm home. But here's the truth travel doesn't break discipline, it's unclear standards, right? So once you stop treating travel like a special exception, then everything's gonna change. So highly effective men, they don't look, we don't eat perfectly on the road, right? But you have to be intentional with some of the things that you select or some of the things that you that you're trying to eat or that you want to eat, right? You have to understand that consistency isn't about always having optimal cond optimal conditions, but it's about having minimum standards that that hold the bar, right? So affordable standards that you can take with you, right? The goal of nutrition isn't control at home, the goal is control anywhere, right? Highly effective men don't change who they are because of their zip code changes, their standards go with them. So, first thing we're gonna talk about is how travel exposes weak standards. And you've probably seen this before, and maybe you've lived it, right? You're you're dialed in at home, you're weighing and measuring, or you got all your stuff prepped, right? Your routine is solid, and then a trip hits, right? You got airport food, hotel breakfasts, maybe you have client dinners or late nights, and suddenly everything becomes optional, right? Especially like right now, I'm in Vegas, so you know that there's a lot of temptation everywhere, right? Well, it's not the travel that causes the breakdown, okay? It just reveals it. So if your nutrition only works in perfect conditions, that means you're you're pretty much set up for failure, right? But effective men, they don't rely on just those perfect conditions, right? They rely on rules. So when standards are unclear, every meal becomes a debate, right? Convenience starts to win, and then all of a sudden you feel guilty, and that's because you haven't been making the right choices. But clear standards eliminate that negotiation even when you're on the road. So travel isn't the problem, it's a lack of non-negotiables. Okay, so number two, what we want to do is we want to eat for control, not perfection. And so here's where a lot of guys will mess this up. They think if I can't eat perfectly, I might as well not even try, right? Or I might because I had this one meal, now the whole weekend's off, right? So one airport meal turns into three bad days. Well, eating healthy while traveling is is about damage prevention, right? Not necessarily optimization, but your priority shift from energy over aesthetics, control over comfort, and consistency over perfection. Okay, and having some simple rules is what's gonna help you win. So what you want to ask yourself is what is the best available option for me right now? Might not be the ideal one, but what is the best option on the menu or wherever I'm at? And that mindset alone is gonna be about 80 to 90 percent of what you need to stay on track. You don't need perfect meals, you just need to have predictable decisions when you have to uh choose what you're gonna eat. So here's some travel nutrition rules that will actually work. And every effective man I've coached that and travels consistently will do this, right? We talk about uh eating for fuel, right? Not necessarily comfort. And you don't you're not gonna have to track your macros, and it's not like a meal plan or anything extreme, it's just some rules that you can think about when you're selecting your food, right? And so here's some nutrition standards that you can take with you anywhere. So first thing you want to look at is protein first at every meal, right? And then the next thing you're looking at is vegetables whenever possible. And if you can, cut out the liquid call the liquid calories, right? So no juices, sodas, or anything like that. And then number four, eat slow and then stop when you feel like you've had enough, right? And then if you if you're feeling like it, you can have an intentional indulgence per day, right? And that's it. No tracking, no apps, no guilt, right? Protein, veggies, no liquid calories, eat slow, and then when you feel like you've had enough, just stop. And then if you have if you are gonna give yourself that indulgence, have it once a day. Now, these rules will work in airports, hotels, restaurants, client dinners, whatever it is, because they're simple enough to enforce anywhere, right? And when the the rules are clear, discipline becomes easy, even on the road. And this is how we approach nutrition inside the highly effective man inner circle. We don't chase perfect plans, but we do build standards that will hold up in real life. And for men who want you know some extra guidance, I have my VIP coaching, which is the rebuild demand, and this is where we install systems for travel, stress, chaos, real schedules so that you're not starting over and you're not falling off. So eating healthy while traveling isn't about willpower, it's about having portable standards that go with you. When your rules travel with you, discipline doesn't break, it adapts to what you're doing. So another way to think about it is if you have if you're going camping or you know, you got your back, you got your backpack or your rucksack, right? Think about what you're packing for the trip. You don't bring everything you own, right? You bring what's essential. So nutrition is the same. What's essential is protein, plants, and control. Everything else is optional. So here's your assignment for this this week or maybe your next trip is that before you leave, write down three nutrition rules that you will follow no matter what. Not goals, these are rules, and you enforce them. So if you want to build systems like this with men who live in the real world, join us in the highly effective man, where we have standards that travel and excuses that don't.
