Show Notes

True service comes from the inside out. This means that, although being able to observe your environment, the people in it, and what's needed of you in each moment, the key subject of your observation needs to be yourself. In this episode you'll learn how this can be done in tandem with the basic awareness of the outside world that's required to do your job and, y'know, function as a human being.

The fourth installment of a powerful new series about practical service skills with endless applications to every aspect of life. They are often overlooked because they work on deeper levels than the surface technical skills than the modern service industry seems tends to over-prioritize. But learning these skills means learning true skillfulness (in the Eastern sense of acquiring wisdom, maturity and effectiveness) and transforming your service into one of power and possibility.

Recommended Pairings:

  1. A key communication crash course episode centered around Mindful Listening w/ Rebecca Shafir
  2. The absolutely essential introduction to Karma Yoga.

All of this is true:

Observation of yourself is not scary - in fact, it's the only pathway into self-worth and self-love.

Within you is a still, wise, and infinitely broad awareness that can anchor you in the most chaotic of situations. Learn to access this "Buddha self" and remain tethered to it regardless of what the rest of your mind is doing.

Knowledge of technical details is important in any profession and most definitely a service-oriented one. How about the technical details of the emotions you're experiencing in response to a situation?

Observing the obstacles to really showing up for the people you're serving is an important skill indeed. And those obstacles always come from within. Learn how to observe your behavior and inquire if it's really working.

Self-observation can be done compassionately - in fact, it must be. See what needs to be worked on in in you, while not viewing yourself as somehow deficient.
