Timothy (DM)

Welcome to Shadows of Prophecy, a D&D real play podcast, where we will find out what it takes to become a hero, face our darkest fears, and pull ourselves out of a pit of despair. Shadows of Prophecy is a Dungeons and Dragons podcast with violent themes and adult language. Listener discretion is advised.

Timothy (DM)

With us today to traverse through adventures of loss and tragedy, we have myself, Timothy, as our ambivalent DM; Dan as our compassionately resolute small business owner, Wren and Ken as the coy yet seductive Midnight Dunreath. Join us as we enter the Shadows of Prophecy. Prologue: A World Unravels. Chapter Nine - Hidden Carnage.

Timothy (DM)

You hear the crashing of a window break behind you. [Dan: "Oh nos" Kendrick: "Fuck"] As you turn around, you see it standing in the window, watching you.

Dan (Wren)

Great. [laughs] So, it definitely sees us right? [Tim: "Yes."] Okay, move it. Pick it up. Let's go!

Timothy (DM)

All right, everyone give me Dex saves as you sprint out of this room,

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

20 bay-by!

Dan (Wren)

I rolled a 6.

Timothy (DM)

All right [smiles]

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Oh-ho no! [Dan laughs]

Timothy (DM)

So, the four of you see this creature watching you from the now empty frame of the window, and you turn and start SPRINTING out of the archive. Justice is leading you another way out front. As you are running from the archive, you enter into the Order House, you pass several Order members. Confused at your presence., they start shouting after you. Wren trips and stumbles as one of the guards grabs on to you. Make a Strength save.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, I'm great at that! [whispers] I'm not great at that, listeners at home. That's a 4.

Timothy (DM)

Their grasp is firm.

Dan (Wren)

Can I throw a handful of silt in their face?

Timothy (DM)

Yeah, give me an attack roll.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, 17.

Timothy (DM)

So, you grab a handful of silt, you throw it in their eyes. Give me another Strength save, this time with advantage.

Dan (Wren)

Are you kidding me? 7.

Timothy (DM)

You break free of their grasp.

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] Oh god [Dan and Kendrick laugh]

Timothy (DM)

And as you do so, you see the creature at the end of the hall, gaining on you.

Dan (Wren)

[less than thrilled] Great.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Can I use Press-tigitation to trick it?

Timothy (DM)

What are you going to do?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Can I create illusions of ourselves, like, standing there to trick it, so we can get some more distance?

Timothy (DM)

Press-tigitation doesn't really DO illusions.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Oh, I'm still new, viewers, so.. [Tim and Dan laugh] Oh well...

Timothy (DM)

There is a Minor Illusion spell that is more suited towards making visual illusions.

Dan (Wren)

But, even those are probably too small though to make, like, a full-size person, even with Minor Illusion, right?

Timothy (DM)

You can make a full-sized person [Dan: "Oh, ok"] it's just not SUPER believable because there's no sound associated.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, right, yeah.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Can I produce smoke, though? Like...

Timothy (DM)

You can produce smoke.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Alright, I'm going to do that just at least until it can't see us.

Timothy (DM)

Okay, so you cast Press-tigitation, and smoke fills the hallway, obscuring your view of the creature. The four of you continue running and you make your way out of the Order House. You stand in the front lawn of the Order House. Where would you like to go?

Dan (Wren)

Any ideas on where we can get all this?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Maybe at the church, or...?

Dan (Wren)

That is a dramatic place to fight this thing. [Tim and Dan laugh] That makes for good drama.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Or-or the new barracks since the old ones are now ruined with blood?

Dan (Wren)

Can I ask a clarifying question on the pointed star of metal flakes?

Timothy (DM)

[walking Dan through it] Just take metal flakes and make the shape of the star.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, okay, got it. So, like a pentagram with metal flakes. Got it.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Okay. I guess we can get the materials from the smith or the mason, I assuming.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, we need an animal. We need candles, metal flakes, an animal, needle and thread (black thread or cord) and the dagger.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Does Justice have any of this besides the dagger?

Timothy (DM)

[rolls some lucky dice] No. [Dan and Kendrick laugh]

Dan (Wren)

Oh, nooo. I thought you had prepped!

Timothy (Justice Drake)

Well, I thought that I could get the humanoid fat from the bodies, and I had red candles, but I left them there.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

So it sounds like we're going back to the Old Barracks.

Dan (Wren)

Yes. Does sound like we're going back to the Old Barracks. Needle and thread: did you have that?

Timothy (Justice Drake)

[wimpy] Nooooo. [Dan laughs]

Dan (Wren)

Do you at least have the dagger on your person?

Timothy (Justice Drake)

Yes! Yes, that I... that I have. I figured that out. I just... I thought that there would be nobody in the barracks, and it would just stay there once it was done, and I would just do the banishing spell under... well, less pressing time!

Dan (Wren)

I'm going to usher us to move along. Just to at least keep moving while we're talking. [laughs] Um...

Timothy (Justice Drake)

I was going to ask Lady Grizelda for some thread and needle - that's the seamstress down on the port?

Dan (Wren)

And you know her well?

Timothy (Justice Drake)

I've been to her once or twice.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, good. Go. Go! Go get that. Give me the dagger.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

"Okay, here. Here!" and he hands you the dagger, and he runs off towards the seamstress.

Dan (Wren)

And then I'm gonna shout after him "Meet us at the barracks!" [to himself] where this all went down because that's where most of our supplies are, I guess! [Kendrick laughs] "Um... and Mara: animal?"

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

[slowly] I think I have an elkhead... but... No! It needs to be alive, doesn't it?

Dan (Wren)

Go talk to Alfred the butcher. Say I sent you. Anything will do; something small.

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

All right. On it, boss!

Dan (Wren)

[in a slightly passive aggressive voice] I guess we'll just go back to the barracks and prepare everything else!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Well, we need to get the--

Dan (Wren)

What else do we need?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

--the metal flakes

Dan (Wren)

We could probably grind down something there like weapons or something.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

That's true. That's true.

Dan (Wren)

Justice said that the red candles were there. We've got the needle and cord, animal sacrifice. We've got the dagger.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

We have the humanoid fat, now.

Dan (Wren)

Humanoid fat. Incense of musk? I don't know, sweat, I guess? We could... we can make that work.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

And yeah, we're walking as we're doing this. [Dan laughs] We're walking fast!

Dan (Wren)

If not jogging! [laughs]

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[suavely] Just so you know, DM dice roller.

Timothy (DM)

You would know that the candlemaker would stock incenses as well as the church [Dan: "Oh, okay"], and metal flakes or something you could probably get frommmm the blacksmith or any other type of metalworker in town.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Right, so based on how the map is set, we can run to the church, grab the incense, then go to the mason, grab the... or the smith or the smithy-- to grab the flakes, and then run to the barracks. So, that's a clear line of running.

Dan (Wren)

[in radio announcer voice] For listeners at home, all of those places are conveniently on the way. [all laugh]

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Question: will this monster go after Mara, or will it just continue going after us since apparently we were in the building while the st--?

Dan (Wren)

I imagine that it will go after any of us. Whoever is closest.

Timothy (DM)

Yes, any of you who were in the building at the time.

Dan (Wren)

So, I trust Mara to be able to handle herself should she encounter it. [a little bit fearful] I hope so at least. Yeah. Let's break into the church! [Tim and Dan laugh] Okay, I'm gonna go to a church door, I guess, and as to not waste time, I want to shove a dagger into the keyhole to break the lock.

Timothy (DM)

It's a church; they don't lock it.

Dan (Wren)

Just kidding. I open the door. [Kendrick laughs]

Timothy (DM)

You push open the front doors of the church, and you enter the chamber of pews, and you see an altar at the front of the room. There are those incense...

Dan (Wren)

What are those things called? The [monk chanting] *HAVA-HAY-AMA* and you swing it back and forth?

Dan (Wren)

Incensor?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[in a very cool voice] Don't ask me, I'm Presbyterian.

Timothy (DM)

Oh! Censers.

Dan (Wren)

Oh yeah, they're called censers, that's right.

Timothy (DM)

There are brass censers hanging around on the columns.

Dan (Wren)

Do any of them smell particularly musky? [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

Give me a Nature check.

Dan (Wren)

Okay. What's my Nature.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Got an 11.

Dan (Wren)

9. What is musk? I guess I know what musk is, but...

Timothy (DM)

These smell like sandalwood.

Dan (Wren)

[laughs] Great. I'm glad we can tell. Is there anybody here? Like, someone, like, cleaning or tending or just present?

Timothy (DM)

There are people at the pews, praying. This is an all-faith temple, so people of various denominations--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Inclusive.

Timothy (DM)

--praying to several different altars.

Dan (Wren)

Is there anybody that seems to, like, work there? Like a religious leader, maybe.

Timothy (DM)

So, you press into the church, and you start quickly walking past each of the pews, and you reach the front of the chamber, and you see off to the left wing are a couple of the priests, congregated, talking quietly amongst themselves.

Dan (Wren)

I will hurry over and without really introducing myself or wasting anytime be like "I need your MUSKIEST incense immediately. It's kind of an emergency. I'm sorry!"

Timothy (Evening Priest)

[started] Oh, uh... What can I...wh--

Dan (Wren)

Your muskie--

Timothy (Evening Priest)

Excuse me?

Dan (Wren)

I take out five gold. "I will make a donation. Your muskiest incense. Please."

Timothy (Evening Priest)

[stammering] Uhhh...I'm...uh... Please put that away, sir! I-it's alright, um. I'm sure that the, uh, priests of Voluptia have some musk. How much do you need?

Dan (Wren)

[stammering] Djdjdjdj-Just a bit.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Enough.

Dan (Wren)

Not too much. Yeah, like a day's worth? [whispers to Midnight] I don't know how much musk is.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I don't know.

Timothy (DM)

[confused as hell] All.... right, um.

Dan (Wren)

Like, it's a emerge-- an emergency. So, if we could--

Timothy (Evening Priest)

Right this way.

Dan (Wren)

Thank you.

Timothy (DM)

And they begin to calmly [Kendrick laughs] and relaxedly walk towards one of the side rooms. They push open the door, and you see it is a sort of supply closet of sorts, and there's a section where you see a lot of altars of Voluptia and, like, figurines of Voluptia, boxes of incense, boxes of rose petals, dried flowers, all sorts of kind of offerings to the Goddess Voluptia. Yeah, and they scan the shelves, looking for incense of musk, and they take a small box off the shelf, and they hand it to you.

Dan (Wren)

Perfect. I snatch it! [laughs] And then pass him five gold and run!

Timothy (DM)

The last thing you see is--

Dan (Wren)

Thank you so much!

Timothy (DM)

--confusion on his face, and he just stands there, hand held out, coins in hand, and then he pockets it.

Dan (Wren)

What a douchebag.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

We'll probably see him at Lark's soon enough.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, it's fair. I'll give him an earful.

Timothy (DM)

And as you turn, you see the Thing [Dan: "Oh, no." Kendrick: "No"], standing at the entrance of the church.

Dan (Wren)

Nobody else is screaming or notices?

Timothy (DM)

[as if it's the plainest thing in the world] They're praying! That is until it starts charging towards you, and people begin to see it, and the entire church breaks out in terror as people start screaming and running for their lives. Where are you going?

Dan (Wren)

Is there a backdoor that I know of?

Timothy (DM)

The backdoor is very easy to spot

Dan (Wren)

Then we are going to take the backdoor! [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

All right. So, you sprint out the backdoor, give me another Dexterity saving throw.

Dan (Wren)

Let's not trip again.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

14.

Dan (Wren)

14 as well!

Timothy (DM)

All right. So, you make your way out the back of the church, slamming the door shut behind you, and you turn to head towards--

Dan (Wren)

What was the next location?

Timothy (DM)

--the smithy.

Dan (Wren)

The smithy? Okay.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

So, we now know is chasing us.

Dan (Wren)

Which: that's good. That's better than the alternative, catching Mara on her own.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Exactly.

Timothy (DM)

As you run towards the smithy, you catch a glimpse of it standing in a window on the second level of the church.--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

This thing is vain.

Dan (Wren)

Why?!?

Timothy (DM)

--watching you.

Dan (Wren)

It just likes to stand where he can see.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

He's more dramatic than US.

Dan (Wren)

And we're hella dramatic! [all laugh]

Timothy (DM)

So, you make your way down to the smithy, and they have closed shop for the night.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I'm assuming this is late at night. Are people now waking up because they're hearing the screams from church?

Dan (Wren)

That's a good point.

Timothy (DM)

The church's kind of secluded from the residential quarters; it's also a big stone building that is really good for keeping sounds in.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[British accent] Awlright, we just keep runnin' to the... to the smitthee.

Dan (Wren)

Ah, it's closed, I imagine. Is the door locked?

Timothy (DM)

The lights are off. You run up to the front door and it is locked.

Dan (Wren)

Do I know this smithy?

Timothy (DM)

Have you had weapons made by a blacksmith in Entropolis?

Dan (Wren)

Oooo, that's a great question. Would... I might have had weapons made for, like... or at least bought weapons for, like, the bouncers. Maybe?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I mean, I assume my daggers were bought here.

Timothy (DM)

So, you might have come here once or twice and met them.

Dan (Wren)

So I've met them. Okay, then I'm so sorry, Gerald the blacksmith. I'm gonna stick a dagger in the keyhole and, like, smash it to break the door... to, like, break the lock.

Timothy (DM)

Okay, so you're not using thieves tools? You're just breaking lock?

Dan (Wren)

I could I guess I could use thiev-- Do I even have thieves' tools? Oh, I do have thieves' tools. I'll try and pick the lock. That's a honestly a good plan.

Timothy (DM)

Give me a thieves' tool check.

Dan (Wren)

What skill is that based off of?

Timothy (DM)

It is Dexterity with proficiency?

Dan (Wren)

Okay, gotcha. 12.

Timothy (DM)

The lock is giving you some trouble. You end up bending your pick [Dan whispers "Oh great"] andddd that was your last one.

Dan (Wren)

Perfect. [Kendrick laughs] Then the dagger it is!

Timothy (DM)

You might need a new way in. So, you pull out your dagger. You wedge it into the door--

Dan (Wren)

And give it a good shove!

Timothy (DM)

--and give it a good shove. Now, give me a Strength check.

Dan (Wren)

Also not... [glumly] that's a 1.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[straight to Dan] You. Bitch. [Dan laughs]

Timothy (DM)

The dagger lodges into the crevice, but does not break the lock.

Dan (Wren)

Middie, would you like to give this dagger a kick?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Yes. I'm going to kick the dagger more since I feel like I'm a little bit stronger.

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] Definitely stronger.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Not by much, um... [Dan: "Oh noooo"]. I got a 3?

Timothy (DM)

You try to kick the dagger in, and it wedges slightly further, does not break the lock.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I'm going to do it again because I am very scared

Dan (Wren)

[strained whisper] Oh nooo, it's, like, right there. I turn around.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, can we ki--

Timothy (DM)

But you feel the hair on the back of your neck start to stand on point.

Timothy (DM)

[a bit jovially] You look behind you, and you don't see anything.

Dan (Wren)

Ok, we're gonna keep moving.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I'm gonna jam it in some more; I'm on alert. 16.

Timothy (DM)

You jam the dagger in, it wedges further, and you hear the wood start to crack, but you still have not successfully opened the door.

Dan (Wren)

Ok, together!

Dan (Wren)

I'd like to give advantage then.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Yes.

Timothy (DM)

You notice a window [Kendrick laughs] on the front of the house.

Dan (Wren)

It's too late. [laughing] We're committed to the door.

Timothy (DM)

All right, give me a Strength save.

Dan (Wren)

Can I help? So, like, we're, like, just ramming the door now.

Timothy (DM)

Yeah, you're ramming the door--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I got a 17.

Timothy (DM)

--Midnight is kicking the dagger. What was your Strength?

Dan (Wren)

A 0. [Tim and Dan laugh] I was hoping to give advantage but that's fine!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Well, I got a 17, so it's fine.

Dan (Wren)

I rolled a nat 1.

Timothy (DM)

Midnight kicks the dagger further into the lock, busting it open and Wren rams into the door as it swings open. Give me a Dexterity saving throw.

Dan (Wren)

To not collapse onto the ground. Uh, that is an 18. Not strong, but dextrous.

Timothy (DM)

Alright, you catch yourself on a table in the front entrance, and you look around and out the back window, you see it standing there... staring at you.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

How big is this thing?

Timothy (DM)

6'2"?

Dan (Wren)

Oh, so it's, like, I'm about as tall as that thing is. [satisfied] It's okay; I'm tall.

Timothy (DM)

Its wingspan is probably what makes it so stately, gives it a nice...

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Gravitas.

Timothy (DM)

Gravitas, yes.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, go find us some metal shavings. I guess I'll... watch it?!? [laughing] I don't know what else to do.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Alright, so. "Alright, got it." So, Midnight runs in and searches the smithy, the blacksmith's table, to see if there's any shavings.

Timothy (DM)

Alright, give me an Investigation check as Wren watches the creature raise its forearms [Dan: "Oh no"] up, and you see its hundreds of bulbous eyes staring at you as it begins to sidestep along the window towards the front of the building.

Dan (Wren)

Oh shit. Okay!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I got a 6, so that was not good. [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

Midnight rips through the work area looking for metal shavings, and you're finding all sorts of tools, tongs, oily rags, half-finished weapons, all sorts of things, but no metal shavings.

Dan (Wren)

I will break contact with this, and go help.

Timothy (DM)

All right. Both of you give me another Investigation check.

Dan (Wren)

12.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Four.

Timothy (DM)

All right, you continue ripping apart this work room, turning up nothing.

Dan (Wren)

[anguished] Oy!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Where is this thing? These things...

Dan (Wren)

I dunno, can we keep searching? Or have we searched everything at this point?

Timothy (DM)

You've pretty much searched everything in this room that you can think of.

Dan (Wren)

This is the workshop that we're in, right?

Timothy (DM)

This is the workshop.

Dan (Wren)

Well, what other rooms would there be, I guess?

Timothy (DM)

The furnace would be out back.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

So let's go to the furnace, but I'm guessing the thing is blocking our path?

Dan (Wren)

Oh!

Dan (Wren)

It went around the front, right?

Timothy (DM)

The last you saw, it was moving its way towards the front of the building.

Dan (Wren)

Can I peek out a window in the front and see if I can see where it is? [nervous laugh] Oh no...

Timothy (DM)

Have you closed the door?

Dan (Wren)

Yes, I would have had the mind to close the door behind me.

Timothy (DM)

So, you closed the door. The lock is broken--

Dan (Wren)

That's fine.

Timothy (DM)

You go to the front of the building, and you peer through the window.

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] It's, like, right there. I could just imagine it standing in front of me.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Justice needs to be fired after this.

Timothy (DM)

As you creep up to the window and push yourself up on the ledge to peek through it, you see its face [Dan wails] glide directly into the center of the window [more wailing], and it breaks the glass in front of you--

Dan (Wren)

With its face???

Timothy (DM)

With its arm.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, okay, I'd like to just *pow*

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Dan is legit putting their hands in front of their mouth.

Dan (Wren)

I hate it *uggggggh*

Timothy (DM)

It reaches out towards you; give me a Dexterity saving throw.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, thank you. That's a 21. SUCK IT, weird thing. [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

It grapples at you, clawing through the window. You push yourself off of the windowsill, and you book it to the back of the room. It starts clambering in through the window.

Dan (Wren)

Uh, let's go to the back. To the back. [laughs]

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

To the back, let's go!

Timothy (DM)

[quickly] Alright, you get to the back door, it is locked!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

FUCK!

Dan (Wren)

From the inside?

Timothy (DM)

[slyly] From the inside. ;)

Dan (Wren)

I unlock it. ;) [Kendrick and Dan laugh a lot]

Timothy (DM)

You unlock the door, you swing it open.

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] What? Okay? I unlock it!

Timothy (DM)

When you running away from something, you don't think of these things; you're just trying to pull and push your way through--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

My d20 is ready.

Timothy (DM)

--you unlock the door, you swing it open, you run out through the back. You see the furnace off to your right--

Dan (Wren)

And I close the door behind me.

Timothy (DM)

--you close the door behind you--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Can we lock it?

Timothy (DM)

--you see the furnace up to your right--

Dan (Wren)

Not from the outside probably.

Timothy (DM)

--and you see a bucket next to it, and in that bucket, you see... metal shavings.

Dan (Wren)

Perfect!

Timothy (DM)

[slightly disheartened that they prepared their d20 for some action] Oh, I don't even need to do this.

Dan (Wren)

I grab that bucket and RUN!

Timothy (DM)

You snatch up the bucket. You sprint off now towards [Kendrick: "the barracks"] the Old Barracks.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, I hate this thing.

Timothy (DM)

You hear the Thing in the building behind you.

Dan (Wren)

That's fine; it'll slow it down. [mock apology] Sorry, Gerald.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[laughs] We'll send him some gold for his troubles.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, sure we will.

Timothy (DM)

All right. You make your way to the barracks. You go in through the front entrance. You run down the stairs, down the dark hallway to the bloody room. You still see all the bodies strewn across the room, the blood now starting to dry.

Dan (Wren)

Has anybody else made it there? Are we the first?

Timothy (DM)

You are the first.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Alright, so Midnight's going to grab her dagger and start collecting the humanoid fat.

Dan (Wren)

Ew. What? Ew! Excuse you, that's gross.

Timothy (DM)

So, you lift one of the bodies off the ground, and you start carving the fat from their stomach.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Midnight is grossed out but knows that her life is in danger, so continues to cut.

Dan (Wren)

Um, Wren will come over to Midnight and pass the the bucket of shavings and go "I can do this."

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Sorry. I got it. It's too late. I'm already... I'm into deep, literally.

Dan (Wren)

Alright, um... I want to look for the red candles. I was going to say [laughing] "As someone who has performed surgery before, I am happy TO DO that, but that's fine." but I'll look for the red candles then.

Timothy (DM)

Where are you looking?

Dan (Wren)

Justice said he left them here.

Timothy (DM)

Yes.

Dan (Wren)

Maybe near the entrance, like, in the room? No, that doesn't make any sense.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Because he wasn't in the building--

Dan (Wren)

He was out front, right?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

--so it had to be outside. The candles... he must have dropped him outside when he bumped into you.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, I go check where... Yeah, out front where he was.

Timothy (DM)

So, you leave through the front of the den, and you start making your way down the hall when... give me a Perception check.

Dan (Wren)

[groan] I'm gonna run into... God, that's the third nat 1 today. I... I don't see it, whatever it is.

Timothy (DM)

So, you make your way down the dark hall, up the stairs, and out of the barracks, and you look around the front lawn of the barracks...

Dan (Wren)

Bushes and bushes and things.

Timothy (DM)

And you don't see the candles.

Dan (Wren)

Dammit.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

We should have stopped by the candlemaker.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, we probably should have, um...

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I wouldn't know this information yet.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, I, like... I will look along the way to notice.

Timothy (DM)

Give me another that Perception check.

Dan (Wren)

12.

Timothy (DM)

As you are making your way back to the den, you notice one of the side doors along the hallway leading up to the den is open.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, was it not open before, like, before I... other times that...?

Timothy (DM)

It was open, but you've walked past it, like, three or four times now as you realize that... I mean, it's open!

Dan (Wren)

I'll peek in; it seems odd.

Timothy (DM)

You peek in, and you see a canvas sack lying on the ground.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, well, I'll peek in that.

Timothy (DM)

You pick up the canvas sack, and you peek in, and you notice it has red candles in it!

Dan (Wren)

Beautiful; are there at least eight?

Timothy (DM)

You start counting them and there's like, more than enough [Dan laughs "ok"]. It's, like, 15 red candles of all different sorts and sizes.

Dan (Wren)

Ok, perfect. Perfect. Then I will take said satchel of candles and run back down to the den, and then start I guess pouring a star shape? The five-pointed star shape with the metal scraps.

Timothy (DM)

Alright, so you start pouring a sigil of a five-pointed star on the ground. You have to shift some of the furniture out of the way to make space. You drag some of the bodies off to the edge of the room, and eventually you're able to make said star.

Dan (Wren)

[nasally] Oh no.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

We need Mara!

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, we do.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Justice, can... oh, we definitely need Justice too.

Dan (Wren)

We also need Justice.

Timothy (DM)

As you finish making the star, Justice shows up.

Dan (Wren)

He went for the needle and cord?

Timothy (Justice Drake)

I got it! [Dan laughs]

Dan (Wren)

"Thank you!" I'm gonna take them from him, and I say "Can you place these candles and light them, please? Thank you. Eight of them.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

"Yes, absolutely." He grabs the sack from you and starts placing candles around the five pointed star, just kind of haphazardly.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

By this time, I finished cutting all the fat that is needed, and I start placing it around the star as well.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

Um, maybe you just need to put it in the middle?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

"That seems fair." So, I pick up all the fat that I already put down and just dump it all in the middle.

Dan (Wren)

Ew [Tim and Dan laugh] that's gross. It's gross every time we talk about it.

Timothy (DM)

You hear the *slosh* of fat hitting the ground in the center of this star. The candles are all now laid out around the sigil.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

[trepidatiously] Do we light them?

Dan (Wren)

I think so. Yeah. Yeah, we light them.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

Okay.

Dan (Wren)

Can you Prestidigit-tigitation candles?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

All right, so I'm going to use Prestigitation on the candles to light them all at once.

Timothy (DM)

All right. All eight red candles around the room flick on.

Dan (Wren)

Do you use that in your work? 'Cause that's brilliant!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[like a goddamn boss] Yes. That's why I'm one of the top sellers.

Dan (Wren)

[impressed] That I can imagine.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

"Where is Mara?" I look around very, like, haphazardly just wondering where she is.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, 'cause we have everything set up. I put down the... I put down the incense in the middle. We will light it, and once it's here, we just need the animal. Does Mara show in the next couple of minutes?

Timothy (DM)

You wait around the room looking around when you hear banging on the back door.

Dan (Wren)

I go open it.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Wouldn't you want to say "Who's there?" first?

Dan (Wren)

No. [all laugh]

Timothy (DM)

You go to the back door, and you open it, and there stands Mara, holding a rabbit.

Dan (Wren)

Cool. "How? A rabbit? How did... what?" [Tim laughs]

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

A rabbit.

Dan (Wren)

I sent you to the butcher, and you come back with a rabbit?

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

Yes, people eat rabbit.

Dan (Wren)

I mean, I guess that's fair, but I was expecting like a goat or a sheep or a pig. I guess a rabbit will do.

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

I-I got the sacrifice, boss.

Dan (Wren)

"Thanks. Again: with the "boss". Just stop!" and I take the rabbit from her. [laughs] "Call me Wren!"

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

I ran into that thing.

Dan (Wren)

Oh, yeah, are you okay?

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

It-it-it's coming! D-do you have it ready?

Dan (Wren)

"Yes, yes, um." and I bring everybody over [laughing] to the circle.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Definitely a star, pentagram, whatever.

Timothy (DM)

Oh, yeah, it's a star but it, I let [general rambling] "Do you mind?" and I gesture to the incense.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I use Prestigi-tation on the incense to make them burn.

Timothy (DM)

Alright, the incense starts aflame, and the smoke starts billowing through the room, and that is when you hear tunnelling down the hall--

Dan (Wren)

From the front or back?

Timothy (DM)

The back.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, we can all get on the other side. [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

--as if claws were dragging along the stone, and it bursts into the room, flinging the door off its hinge, and it FLIES into the center of the chamber and just starts tearing at the globs of fatty flesh, DEVOURING it.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Can I back up against the wall because I am in such shock?

Dan (Wren)

"Okay, um... sorry, poor guy" and I will kill the rabbit with the ritual dagger.

Timothy (DM)

It squeals as you slit its throat. Blood starts pouring out its neck, falling to the ground.

Dan (Wren)

And I will lay out the scroll on the floor so I can see it, and I will recite the following incantation. Oh my God, there's so many vowels. [laughs]

Dan (Wren)

[as if reading a gibberish eye chart] "Laibus, eniergo, z'est malee how-- holium. Ecruere par ci-di-oba. Laibus iniergo"

Timothy (DM)

Goooood luuuuuck ;)

Timothy (DM)

As you start reciting the words, it turns its attention towards you [Dan laughs "Shit"], and it starts making its way slowly towards you--

Dan (Wren)

Can I shoot... can I shoot it with an arrow? Can I put an arrow in it?

Timothy (DM)

Yeah, everybody roll initiative.

Dan (Wren)

Okay. *ha!* Oh!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I thought this banishing spell worked?

Dan (Wren)

--and we've got... we've got, uh... got Justice with us.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[out of the side of the mouth] Can Justice do anything though?

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] We fight for justice.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

We fight for justice.

Dan (Wren)

Honestly, we've played... this whole, THIS WHOLE session has been fighting for Justice.

Timothy (DM)

[slyly] I definitely didn't name them that on purpose.

Dan (Wren)

I got a 20!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I got a 9.

Timothy (DM)

So, as you finish reciting the words, it stands, turns its attention towards you, and STRETCHES out its wings across the breadth of the sigil. everyone make a wisdom saving throw as an unearthly shrill shriek comes not from its mouth but within your own mind.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[laughs] Yeah, I'm good. I got a 19.

Dan (Wren)

I rolled a 5. [Tim rolls hella amount of dice] [whispers] Oh my god.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Please don't die on us, Wren.

Dan (Wren)

I know I'm just gonna go down on the first round.

Timothy (DM)

Wren, you are frightened. [Dan: "Okay"] You cannot move towards the creature as you cower in fear. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Justice cowering in a corner.

Dan (Wren)

Great, well, that's my turn. I can't do anything. Do I get to make a save to...

Timothy (DM)

So, at the end of your turn, you can make a Wisdom saving throw to muster the courage to stand up against this creature that is making its way towards you, Wren.

Dan (Wren)

Am I allowed to attack it?

Timothy (DM)

You may attack, but you have disadvantage.

Dan (Wren)

Okay. Well, I guess I'll take out my shortbow and do that... with disadvantage, which is no fun. Oh, but that's not too bad; a 14?

Timothy (DM)

Trembling in fear, you notch an arrow on your bow, and you loose it at the creature, but as your arm shakes, the arrow goes wide--

Dan (Wren)

Oh no. So, it's AC is higher than it was before.

Timothy (DM)

--piercing past its left wing.

Dan (Wren)

Dammit. Okay, that's all I could do. I'll probably back up as well.

Timothy (DM)

So, you start backing out of the room away from the creature--

Dan (Wren)

And I get to make my Wisdom saving throw, right?

Timothy (DM)

And you make a Wisdom saving throw.

Dan (Wren)

8.

Timothy (DM)

You're still frightened.

Dan (Wren)

Dammit. Okay.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Justice!

Timothy (DM)

Justice, cowering in the corner, also timidly pulled out their shortbow and notches an arrow. The arrow hits the creature, piercing through its wing for 4 piercing damage.

Dan (Wren)

Does the creature react?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Or heal?

Timothy (DM)

Barely, but it does not heal.

Dan (Wren)

Hmm. There we go.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

YES! Mara throw something at it. [Dan agrees]

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

Mara lets out a roar, and you see her body starts to transform *HRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHURRR* [Dan wheezes] as you see claws start growing out of her fingertips, a tail bursts from behind, and teeth start to grow in her mouth that elongates into a large bestial maw. She charges at the creature, slashing at it with her claws, and she tears into it for 6 slashing damage.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

All right, I'm going to take both my hand axes and toss them at the... at the Thing. 13 and 6.

Timothy (DM)

Both are going to miss.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

FFFFUCK. [Tim and Dan laugh]

Timothy (DM)

[very pleased] It's the Thing's turn.

Dan (Wren)

Sure is! And we're not doooooin' great.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[deep voice] It's clobbering time.

Timothy (DM)

It is going to slash at Mara with its bony ribcage knives... and she will take 5 necrotic damage as you see a black vein ripple through her body.

Dan (Wren)

Ew.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[whispers] That's not good, viewers.

Dan (Wren)

[whispers] That's not good. It's not good.

Timothy (DM)

All right. Back up to the top.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, Wren is STILL afraid, uh, so he will just shoot an arrow from the hallway, I guess? That's gonna miss that's a 11 to hit?

Timothy (DM)

Another shaky arrow goes wide.

Dan (Wren)

[sighing] Okay, I'm gonna see if I can "unfear" myself. Oh my god, I keep rolling like absolute garbage. It's a 10.

Timothy (DM)

A 10 does not pass. Fear still overwhelms you. Justice notches another arrow as he crumbles even further into the corner of the room, but it's successful. Lodges another arrow into the creature--

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[slightly proud] He ain't such a bitch.

Timothy (DM)

--this time hitting its torso for 9 piercing damage.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Justice is STRONG.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, and I'm whiffin' like a motherfucker.

Timothy (DM)

Mara tears into the creature again, but it brushes her aside.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

All right, Midnight's going to run to grab her hand axes and just lodge into the thing. 19 and 14

Timothy (DM)

You have advantage now.

Dan (Wren)

Physical, so melee?

Timothy (DM)

So 19?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

19, [laughing] and 9.

Timothy (DM)

Okay, so you lodge one of the hand axes into the creature

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

All right, and that's a d6 + 3, so that is going to be 8 damage.

Timothy (DM)

All right, it sticks into the creatures back. You see the purple viscous fluid start pouring out of the wound.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[whispering in the Thing's non-ear] Great. Die, bitch.

Timothy (DM)

It is going to take an attack of opportunity from Mara as it senses Justice's fear and glides on towards them.

Dan (Wren)

[realizing Tim's plan to pull on heartstrings] Gooootcha.

Timothy (DM)

Mara is able to rip out a chunk of its flesh for 6 slashing damage.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Nice. Okay, dope.

Dan (Wren)

I thought it was attacking Mara because of my fear, and I was like, "What the fuck kind of nonsense creature is this?"

Timothy (DM)

As an extra dimensional maw rips through the mortal plane and clamps down on Justice.

Dan (Wren)

That's not good.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Bye, Justice.

Dan (Wren)

[Tim unleashes a dumptruck of dice] Oh no, it's SO many dice.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I know. And y'all can't see this, but the face that Tim just made... is very, very scary. You need to hire a new bartender now.

Dan (Wren)

[drafting a DrinkedIn advertisement] I know.

Timothy (DM)

Justice DROPS to the ground as the maw spits him out, his body motionless.

Dan (Wren)

Great...

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[pitifully] Justice!

Dan (Wren)

Can I see this thing anymore? Basically, 'cause I'm in the hall.

Timothy (DM)

You can see it as you peer into the room. Justice was in the corner opposite of you.

Dan (Wren)

Okay, I guess I'll loose an arrow, again with disadvantage because I can't get rid of this fucking frightened and it's... it's a nat 20 on the other one! It's a 4 on the one that matters though, and I'll try to break my frightened. It's a 13?

Timothy (DM)

You are unable to shake the fear as you watch your bartender collapse to the ground.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I'm guessing Justice is not moving, it's Mara's turn.

Dan (Wren)

It's Justice's turn, technically.

Timothy (DM)

Mara lets out a cry of anguish as she just TEARS into the back of this creature, going full ham, ripping it apart. Chunks of flesh are being thrown to the floor. You start to see this purple viscous fluid just pouring out of the wounds in it's back. It teeters as it turns around.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Midnight is going to take their hand axes, grab the one that actually landed out of the monster, and just go back in hopefully destroying the thing. 23.

Dan (Wren)

Was that a nat 20?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Yeah.

Dan (Wren)

You crit.

Timothy (DM)

You crit on it.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

What's that mean?

Dan (Wren)

Critical? You double... you roll your damage dice twice.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

For the first one, okay. Oh, I just... oh, I'm gonna have to reroll the second time. 22.

Dan (Wren)

Is that a 19?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Yeah.

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] You crit again because you're a Champion.

Timothy (DM)

[blown away] You crit on 19s?

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, your subclass is Champion, which means that you crit on 19s AND 20s.

Timothy (DM)

Holy shit!

Dan (Wren)

So, you double crit

Timothy (DM)

So, Midnight you with ALLL of your force and all of your gumption, you lay into this creature, your passions are burning inside of you.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

So, one is 5 and the other is 11 for piercing damage.

Timothy (DM)

So, you do 16 piercing damage into the chest of this creature. It is now approaching Death's door.

Dan (Wren)

I'm glad I helped.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[defiantly] That's for Justice.

Dan (Wren)

Now, the Thing's turn?

Timothy (DM)

Now, it's the creature's turn. The creature pulls your weapons out of its body, tosses them to the side of the room, and raises its dagger above its head towards you and as it stumbles towards you teetering on the brink of life, it catches its weight on its ankle and swipes across, missing you just barely.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

*gasp*

Dan (Wren)

Dodge! Dodge! Dodge! Is it my turn?

Timothy (DM)

You dodge out of the way, your weapons have been cast to the side of the room, it is Wren's turn.

Dan (Wren)

Shaky arrow #4.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[pulling out the pom poms] You can do this, Wren. Kill it, Wren!

Dan (Wren)

Let's see how we do. That's a 12?

Timothy (DM)

A 12 does not hit.

Dan (Wren)

[disheartened] I haven't rolled above a 10.

Timothy (DM)

Gosh, do you want new dice?

Dan (Wren)

And that is an 8 to break out of fear?

Timothy (DM)

Do you want new dice? Do you want... g-grab new dice.

Dan (Wren)

I-I've rolled 20s on these dice as well [Tim laughs] I don't... I don't believe in dice jail, listeners. That's a 10 to break out of fear? No, that's a 9, let me be clear.

Timothy (DM)

No. As this battle continues, all of the responsibility on Wren's shoulders builds in his mind. He sees Justice motionless in the corner, he's seeing this carnage of the people across this room, and then he sees Midnight and Mara courageously defending themselves against this creature. Justice will make a death saving throw.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Breathe, Justice. Breathe, Justice. No!

Timothy (DM)

And Mara, again, will rip into this creature, but as she lunges, it steps out of the way. Midnight, you're up.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

I run to grab my hand axes, the fuel of seeing Justice on the floor, propelling me... oh yeah, I also have my long... my longs-- no, my shortsword [Dan laughs] Can I use the short sword in a hand axe at the same time? I have two--

Timothy (DM)

Yeah, you have two-weapon fighting, don't you?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Yes, I do. So, I want to... In my fury. I'm just gonna grab one hand axe and pull out my shortsword, and I'm going to lunge at the thing once more. That is... that was for the hand axe and that is a 9 + 13. 12. And that's a crit 'cause that's a 20--

Dan (Wren)

He rolled another 19?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

22--

Dan (Wren)

Oh my gosh.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

No, 23.

Timothy (DM)

So, as you've lunge with a shortsword, you miss the creature, but as you pull around with your off-hand and the hand axe, it lodges into the creatures chest right below it neckline.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

So, I just received--

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] "Received" From the Gods! Received!

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Two 6s + 4. So, that is 16 piercing damage. For the viewers: I fucking rock. [Dan laughs]

Timothy (DM)

You REND the handaxe through its chest, ripping it down to the ground. The creature crumples beneath its own weight [Midnight pants] as it lets out a final mind shriek and falls motionless at your feet.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Midnight stares at it and then immediately turns to run to Justice.

Dan (Wren)

Once the thing dies and fear breaks, Wren is going to be at Justice's side.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Wake up, Justice. Wake up!

Timothy (DM)

You all run over to Justice, and you start shaking his motionless body.

Dan (Wren)

Um, I would like to "medicine" his motionless body, ideally.

Timothy (DM)

All right, give me a Medicine check.

Dan (Wren)

22.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[whispers] Thank goodness.

Dan (Wren)

My only good rolls of the night.

Timothy (DM)

So you....lift up Justice's body in your arms, and you check for a pulse. There is none.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[sheds a tear, gasps] No.

Timothy (DM)

He's not breathing. His body has started... to become cold.

Dan (Wren)

So, there's nothing that I could do.

Timothy (DM)

As you hold him in your arms, you feel his life force exiting his body, and his form lays limp in your arms.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[whispers] Justice.

Timothy (Mara "Oriole")

Boss. I-I know that face. Tell me it isn't so.

Dan (Wren)

Wren's going to lie Justice on the ground and then go flip a table out of sheer rage.

Timothy (DM)

You storm over. You toss the table to the ground. It crashes to the stone, splinters with the force. Mara stands there, frozen in anger.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Midnight runs or lays beside Justice and just rubs their head, sobbing.

Dan (Wren)

Do I know any powerful healers, magic healers?

Timothy (DM)

You'd have to pull some strings.

Dan (Wren)

I will pull as many strings as I have to.

Timothy (DM)

Give me... Persuasion?

Dan (Wren)

I can do that. Oh god. That's a 14.

Timothy (DM)

[whispers] With advantage.

Dan (Wren)

That's a 19?

Timothy (DM)

Mara picks up Justice's limp body and carries him out of the chamber. Wren leads the way back to the Order House. The priestesses of Praea and Pudicium are not the people you had wished to ask a favor from. You know their favors come with a great cost.

Dan (Wren)

[arms folded looking at Tim directly] Mmhm.

Timothy (DM)

But one you are willing to spend today.

Dan (Wren)

[radly] Yeah.

Timothy (Order Priestess)

They agree, and you take him back to the ritual chambers and lay him upon a stone slab. Then they ask you to leave. "You're not to come back until tomorrow."

Dan (Wren)

[not left with much choice] All right. Sure.

Timothy (DM)

The three of you leave and head home for the evening, waiting in anticipation, hoping for a miracle... and that miracle comes.

Dan (Wren)

Thank, Jesus.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Thank goodness.

Timothy (DM)

In the morning when you return to the Order House, you are greeted by a tall elven woman who introduces themselves as Justice.

Dan (Wren)

How tall? [laughs]

Timothy (DM)

6'4"

Dan (Wren)

Oh God! Taller than me. Jesus! [laughs] [shocked]"Justice!"

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

Justice?

Timothy (Justice Drake)

[with that classic sigh] Yeah. It's me.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

How?

Dan (Wren)

[laughing] Is there anybody else here with Justice? Like, a priestess or something?

Timothy (DM)

No.

Dan (Wren)

Okay.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

Well, sometimes, from what they've told me, miracles don't turn out how they were intended.

Dan (Wren)

Well, I'm glad you're here with us.

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

You look good.

Dan (Wren)

Yeah, you look great. I mean, you looked great before but you're tall... taller, you're much taller. How's the view from up there?

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

[furrows eyebrows] Wren.

Dan (Wren)

What? [laughs]

Kendrick (Midnight Dunreath)

They're in shock.

Dan (Wren)

I'm going to take their hand and kind of lead them out of the Order.

Timothy (Justice Drake)

They seem on the edge of speaking, but every time they try to say something, they stop themselves. They follow you out of the Order House until eventually they just say "It's weird being back" and they give a thousand-yard stare as they fall back into silence, lost in thought.

Dan (Wren)

Do they eventually recover from said thousand-yard stare... in the future? Do we ever get Justice back?

Timothy (DM)

[closing his book] And that's where we are going to end this session.

Dan (Wren)

[weary sigh] Fun shit.

Timothy (DM)
