Israel came to Egypt under the blessing of the Pharoah and Joseph, but "there arose a new king over Egypt that did not know Joseph."  Generations come and go and cultures and values change.  God has blessed Israel with great numbers and the new Pharoah is worried about whether they will be loyal in a time of war. So persecution and slavery begins. 

The book of Exodus is about: 

• The true God Yahweh proving His superiority and the pagan gods useless
• Moses proving God's superiority over Pharoah
• God establishing true worship, with is the foreshadowing of Jesus
• God's hand of providence working even though Israel is suffering
