YOU WERE MADE FOR A SUPERNATURAL LIFE
INTRODUCTION
Hello everyone, and welcome to Spirit-Led Hope. My name is Glenn Erichsen, and in this episode, I want you to see that:
YOU WERE MADE FOR A SUPERNATURAL LIFE
If you listened to the last episode of this season, Episode 14, you know that I was not sure where we were headed in this episode. To be transparent, this season has been a real time-killer in my life. There are people who dedicate thousands of hours to studying things like aliens, and telepathy, and Bigfoot, and giants…and I just do not have the time. But I do need to study enough to know what I am talking about…and that is time consuming.
Some of the podcasts and books I am studying tire me out a bit. Many are informative and helpful, but it takes some work to get through them.
So, in this episode, I want to take a break and focus on our relationship with God. Because that excites me and that energizes me. Also, just a heads up, I have a lot of commitments over the next couple of months, so I may need to take a mid-season break. If I do that, I will be sure and publish some “minicasts” to keep you in the loop.
CREATED FOR RELATIONSHIP
By the time we are done with this episode, I want you to have the confidence that you were made for a supernatural life. Now when we think about a supernatural life, our thoughts may naturally go to things like performing miracles or seeing spiritual beings, things that most consider out of the ordinary. And while there is truth to that, that is not what I want us to focus on first.
What I want us to see is that we were created for intimacy with God. And because God is spirit and supernatural, our lives were intended to be a perfect blending of the physical natural world and the supernatural spiritual world. We were designed as physical beings with a spirit, and we were meant to move seamlessly in both the physical and spiritual worlds.
That is one of the ways that humans are different than spiritual beings like angels and demons. From the beginning we were made with a physical body. Let us quickly read the Genesis account of the creation of humans.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:26-27 ESV
Remember back in Episodes 3, 4, and 5 we looked at the book “The Unseen Realm?” One of the beliefs of the author, the late Michael Heiser, is that when God said “let us make man,” God is referring to other spiritual beings like members of the Divine Council. If the Divine Council is new to you, please go back and listen to those episodes.
Even though I respect this opinion, I still believe the “us” in these verses refer to the Trinity. The reason why is because humans seem to be image bearers of God in a way that is different than the members of the Divine Council. The Genesis account seems clear to me that there is something about the creation of men and women that more uniquely looks like God. While both men and women are image bearers of God, there is something complementary in the two that reveals God in a way like no other created beings…or at least created beings that we know about.
Then there is the unique intimacy of God with humans. In Genesis chapter 2, the act of creating physical humans was personal. God breathed life into Adam. And then God personally brought forth Eve from Adam. From the very beginning, God demonstrated his desire for relationship with humans. He gave them a world over which they could have dominion, and then he walked with them and made them his own.
We do not know exactly what Adam and Eve were like before the Fall, but we do know what we are like now. We can see that God values relationship with us so much, that the Father sacrificed the Son so that our relationship could be restored.
Through Jesus, we can be adopted as God’s children. And this adoption is sealed by God himself when the Holy Spirit takes up residence within each believer individually and corporately when we are together.
Think about that…God made humans in such a way that we have a physical body but are also spiritual. And our spirit, if we choose to do it, can join with the Holy Spirit. God has allowed humans to join with him in a relationship that is deeply personal and mystical. We are stretched to understand the depths of our relationship with God and even the mechanics of how it works. The physical and the spiritual are somehow meant to work in perfect harmony. It is in this condition that we are called to live supernatural lives.
WHAT DOES A SUPERNATURAL LIFE LOOK LIKE
So, what does this supernatural life with God look like? Does it mean that every moment we are casting out demons or healing the sick? I do not think so, because even Jesus did not do that. Jesus had down times between miracles, and other than a small account when he was 12 years old, we know very little about 30 years of his life. Certainly, we have no records that he performed miracles or healed the sick until after his water baptism and encounter with Satan.
And yet, do we think that Jesus lived a meaningless, non-supernatural life until he was 30? Of course not. In Luke 2:40 we read:
The boy grew up and became strong, filled with wisdom, and God’s grace was on him.
Luke 2:40 CSB
Having God’s grace upon you sounds supernatural to me! So, we need to understand that living a supernatural life is more than just doing spectacular deeds.
Our supernatural life is about our relationship with God. God is the source of a fulfilling supernatural life. What we do flows out of that relationship. The problem we have is that we often build up in our minds a picture of living supernaturally that is either incorrect or unobtainable.
THREE WAYS TO LIVE A SUPERNATURAL LIFE
In the time remaining, I want to describe three ways to live a supernatural life. Now, of course, there are many things we could talk about. But here are three useful tips that you can act upon today.
TIP 1: Use the natural gifts that God has given you.
When we look at Scripture, we see that each one of us is created in some way with gifts that are natural to us. Some people are naturally gifted leaders, or speakers. Some people are creative, or artistic, or wise, or can make things with their hands. Some people are good at following directions and getting work done. Some people make good engineers, or therapists, or grounds keepers, or housekeepers, or parents, or whatever. Everyone has something that comes natural to them or just energizes them. The important part is to recognize that these are gifts from God meant to serve him and others.
I think it is easy to look at these types of gifts and not give God credit for them. Maybe it is because they seem to be part of our physical makeup and flow from the way our bodies and our brains work. But that makes these gifts no less supernatural. Because if you respond to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and use these gifts in love, to serve God and others, you have now seamlessly moved between the physical and the spiritual.
God takes your actions and does something supernatural with them that only he can do. Using our natural gifts for God is such an important part of a supernatural life that God rewards us. Listen to what it says in Colossians 3:23-24…
Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 CSB
In other words, we are not seeking approval from people. We serve people with God’s heart to accomplish his divine purposes. And the verse says, “whatever you do.” There is no indication that this is limited to things like the visible manifested gifts of the Spirit, which we will talk about in a moment.
If you are serving God, seeking to do his will and to represent him well with the natural gifts God has given you…you are living a supernatural life. You are taking the way you are made and partnering with God to accomplish what he wants to accomplish. In doing this, if you keep your eyes on God (and avoid self-adulation and pride) you will also draw closer to God. And that…is always supernatural.
TIP 2: Allow the Holy Spirit to transform your character.
This is a very important way in which we live a supernatural life. All of us need to grow in the fruit of the Spirit because no one has yet attained the character of Jesus. So, we submit ourselves to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.
The fruit of the Spirit is something you hear me talk a lot about. We read about the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22,23…
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23 ESV
When we get serious about growing in all these areas, the Holy Spirit supernaturally works in us to transform us. This is not a superficial makeover, but an inner reconstruction. This is a beautiful supernatural work by the Holy Spirit to make us into something different.
This transformative work is also one of the ways we learn how to hear God better. Here is the reality, most of us have areas which need a lot of work. And if we freely choose to change, the Holy Spirit will convict us and work within us. I shared in Season 1 how I used to be a very poor sport. I would throw tantrums if I lost certain games. But one day I was getting in my car and the Holy Spirit, not audibly but clearly, told me that I had been a poor sport most of my life and that he wanted me to change. And then he helped me change.
If you are listening to this and you cannot identify any area in your life where you have become more like Jesus…then you are missing one of the most rewarding ways to experience a supernatural life. It will also be one of the most challenging things you have ever done. But I can guarantee you that as you yield to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, your relationship with God will become deeper. And that is supernatural because you will begin to live more on God’s terms. You will live your life the way he wants you to live. And that automatically will allow you to hear God better and be more intimate with him. That is supernatural.
TIP 3: Step out in faith with the gifts of the Spirit.
The third way for living a supernatural life is something else I covered in Season 1. It is functioning in the gifts of the Spirit. And this is probably what most people think about when we talk about living supernaturally.
When we talk about gifts of the Spirit, we typically refer to the gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12 which include words of wisdom, words of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miracles, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpreting tongues.
Something interesting about the gifts of the Spirit is that God tells us to desire them. In other words, it is okay to want them. But when and which gift, or gifts, we function in, that is up to the Holy Spirit…it is not our choice.
Our role is to make ourselves available and be ready to step out in faith. Every gift of the Spirit requires faith and requires us to act. God may give you a prophetic word for someone, but they will never hear it if you do not speak.
And that is the tip I have for you. When and where the gifts of the Spirit are used, is up to God. But, if you believe that God is asking you to help someone using one of these gifts, my encouragement to you is to do it. If this is totally new to you, please listen to Season 1. This is not something meant to discourage you or make you afraid, or worried. Yet, it is up to you to make yourself available for these gifts. God is not going to force you to speak in tongues or give someone a word of wisdom. But if you are open to it and are aware that God wants to use you this way, ask the Holy Spirit to help you, and he will.
Gifts of the Spirit, when properly used, often create a tangible intersection of the physical and spiritual worlds. People who experience the gifts know they have been touched by God, who is supernatural. And when God works through you in this way, your faith in God grows because you were made for a supernatural life and you just experienced working cooperatively with the Holy Spirit.
One of the most beautiful things about living a supernatural life is that the three things I just mentioned are designed to work together. I have noticed in my own life that when I use my natural gifts and allow the Holy Spirit to transform my character, the gifts of the Spirit are more predominant. What we often see is that natural gifts work in tandem with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and they are coordinated through love and the fruit of the Spirit.
I think this makes sense. God will use us and work through us whether we are a newborn believer or a seasoned apprentice to Jesus. God will use our natural gifts, and/or gifts of the Spirit as he chooses. And always, he asks us to yield to the ongoing transformative work of the Holy Spirit to grow in us the fruit of the Spirit. It is the fruit that helps us love others and grow in relationship with them.
All of that is amazing. But it is based on the premise that God desires relationship with us and gave of himself to make that possible. Our life is meant to be a supernatural life with God, and it is the greatest adventure one could ever have.
CLOSING
To wrap this up, you were made for a supernatural life with God. And that begins with Jesus. If you have never given your life to Jesus, then I encourage you to do that. Jesus loves you and wants relationship with you.
Life in Jesus is a gift that he freely gives us. You do not need to earn what Jesus gives us through grace. What you do need to do is believe that Jesus died for your sins and that he rose from the dead. And then, you choose to confess that Jesus is Lord of your life…that you agree he is now in charge. This means that you willingly decide to turn away from areas of sin and turn towards Jesus. In that process the Holy Spirit will make you into a new person. And your adventure with God will take a new direction.
If you choose to give your life to Jesus, then I am celebrating with you. I also encourage you to get water baptized because that is a great first step of obedience.
In the next episode I think it is time that we begin to talk more about spiritual beings, like angels and demons.
