Sermon Title: Who We Aren’t

2 Corinthians 5:16-21
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Gods special ministry (5:14–15, 18–19, 21a)

1.   He has reconciled all sinners (5:14–15): This he has accomplished by the death of Christ on the cross.

2.   He has regenerated all repenting sinners (5:18–19, 21a): Each new believer receives a new nature.

 Our special ministry (5:11–13, 16–17, 20, 21b)

1.   The task (5:11–13, 21b): We have been given the ministry of reconciliation.

2.   The title (5:16–17, 20): God looks upon us as his earthly ambassadors!

Who We Aren’t

 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

English Standard Version

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh.

 1.     WE ARE NOT PEOPLE PLEASERS

Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.

 2.     WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN MAKING JESUS INTO A SELF-HELP GURU (He is God)

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

 3.     WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN JUDGING YOUR PAST

 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;

 4.     WE DESPISE WAR AND CONFLICT (Macro, Micro, Relational, Spiritual)

MEANING WE ARE ABOVE ALL, PEACEMAKERS!

19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

 5.     WE ARE NOT POLITCAL

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

 6. WE ARE NOT AFRAID TO SHARE ABOUT JESUS TO OUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND CO-WORKERS

21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

 7. WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN “RELIGION” (WE WANT A TRANSFORMING RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS)

 JOHN CHRYSOSTOM 347 ce :

The gold bit on your horse, the gold circlet on the wrist of your slave, the gilding on your shoes, mean that you are robbing the orphan and starving the widow. When you have passed away, each passer-by who looks upon your great mansion will say, “How many tears did it take to build that mansion; how many orphans were stripped; how many widows wronged; how many laborers deprived of their honest wages?” Even death itself will not deliver you from your accusers.
