As open access continues to become more prominent in the field of academic publishing, it is essential to have a foundational understanding of the topic as it continues to evolve. Recently, the Biden administration announced it instructed all U.S. federal agencies to require open access to federally funded research, starting in 2026. The U.S. is the world’s biggest research funder, according to Nature and as such, the change to require federally funded research to be open access will increase the number of scientific research articles publicly available.
