Black Eden 1912 Bourbon; The Black-Owned Bourbon Brand Honoring Idlewild Michigan
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A bourbon bottle can be just glass and marketing, or it can be a doorway into a place most people have never been taught to remember. We sit down with John Joubert, founder of Iconic Spirits, to taste Black Eden 1912 and unpack why the name points back to Idlewild, Michigan, a historic African American resort community founded in 1912 during an era when Black travelers needed safe destinations of their own.

John shares his Detroit roots, his path through basketball and a career in entertainment, and the moment during COVID that pushed him to build something lasting in his mother’s honor. That journey starts with Phyllis Wines, then scales into whiskey with a clear goal: create a premium Black-owned bourbon brand that carries history without sacrificing quality.
We also get nerdy in the best way. Black Eden 1912 is a straight bourbon whiskey at 90 proof with a 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill, aged four years. We talk sourcing and blending (including MGP), why consistency is an art, and what we taste in the glass, from a sweet nose to cherry and sugar-cookie notes. Then we break down the “shelf appeal” side: the Kingston bottle shape, screen-printed design, real cork, and the packaging decisions that make this look as good as it pours.
You’ll hear how John grows distribution market by market, why he still shows up for tastings himself, where you can find the bottle, and what’s coming next, including older barrels, a potential tasting room, and events like the Metro Detroit Bourbon Festival. If you like bourbon with a story you can verify, hit play, subscribe, share this with a whiskey friend, and leave a review so more people can find it.

Jamie FlanaganIt is time for happy hour. It is the man cave happy hour. Whiskey, cigar, spirits, and the stories that go along with it. I'm Jamie Flanagan. That guy across from me right there, that's David Wright.
SPEAKER_05The guy right across from me is August Kitchlack.
August GitshlagYou're gonna talk about the guy on the screen up there.
SPEAKER_01You know what? That's okay because I'm not there. I'm here. And I'm on location.
August GitshlagIt doesn't mean you're any less sexy, Matt Fox. I'm on locational drag rapids, all right? With your welcome cocktail, just chilling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Here, here we are.
Jamie FlanaganMatthew, what did you? We uh we're coming up. We're gonna we're talking today with the uh owner of uh Black Eden, it's iconic spirits, and we're gonna get to that as soon as we find out what Matt poured for his welcome cocktail.
SPEAKER_01So I I got a uh 1920 Prohibition old Forester, some orange bitters and some Lonzardo cherries, just hanging out, doing a podcast with some of my best friends.
Jamie FlanaganHey, awesome. Matt, we're glad you were able to squeak away from work to be able to get in here and uh work ended a couple hours ago.
SPEAKER_01So are you at like a convention or something?
August GitshlagAre you in a in a hotel room in Grand Rapids? Where's the Shriners at? Running up and down the hallway with your hat on. Aren't you at the hotel lobby bar? Pick it up, tail, buddy.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm at the don't tell motel. That's where I'm at.
August GitshlagI can tell by the art. Yeah, right. Do you have do you have porters from the bed? I didn't I didn't hear you, buddy. What's that?
SPEAKER_01What did you have you watched any movies lately, August? No. The art, the art on the walls. Oh, yeah.
August GitshlagI don't know. There's a there's a joke there that just doesn't fly when you're so far away, buddy. It didn't connect.
SPEAKER_01Porn jokes don't work on this podcast. Oh, okay.
August GitshlagYou're sitting in the desk chair that's in the hotel room. I get it. Okay. Fair enough. Fair enough.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the podcast.
August GitshlagOh, my stuff's classy. It's all filmed in Beverly
Meeting John Jobert And The Brand
August GitshlagHills.
Jamie FlanaganThat's it. So John, see how silly we are. It's uh it's a it's a whole band of silliness here. But John, yeah, we brought you in today because we came across there's another podcast here that records out of the podcast Your Voice Studios, these guys puffs and drinks, and they were doing a show, and then somebody they had on where they were really advocating for you, and I like kind of googled it. I'm like, hey, fellas, he's down the street doing a tasting, and you and we all so after the show, we all came over and and and said hi. Yes, you did. And I got a sneak peek of the black Eden bourbon. Is it bourbon? Straight bourbon whiskey. All right, it's it's and and the the bottling. We'll talk about the bottling and and all that. It's yeah, it's sexy. It's pretty uh it's it's it's a sexy beast, and all about that. But before we get to all of that, and it's Jobert, right, John? Jobert, iconic spirits. Yes, and bourbon's not all you do, so there's wine and and some clear spirits and and all kinds of stuff you got going on, right? Just just some wine. Wine. A wine?
August GitshlagI saw a Moscato, okay, right? All right, I'm a winemaker myself, I'm a hobby winemaker.
Jamie FlanaganSo the bourbon and bourbons and wines, we'll talk about those another time. Today we're gonna focus on on the on the bourbon from iconic spirits.
August GitshlagBut before we get to that, yeah, before we get to that, anywhere close to the product. Yes, before we get to that. Before we get to that, there's an important ritual here on the Van Cape Happy
Detroit Roots And Basketball Years
August GitshlagHour.
SPEAKER_02John, tell me about your childhood. Well, my name is John Jobier. I am born and raised in Detroit. So I am a Detroiter. Uh actually southwest Detroit. Southwest. Zipco 48217. All right.
Jamie FlanaganAll right.
August GitshlagI was seven in seven in meringue. So I grew up in St. Jude.
Jamie FlanaganOkay. Now I'm a Ham Tramican. I live in Ham Tram.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Okay. Yeah. All right.
Jamie FlanaganSo all right. So a Detroit guy, you did you stay here?
SPEAKER_02Um I I did. I did. Uh I went to Detroit Southwestern. Um play high school basketball, one whole lot, right? I'm of the uh Bashawn Leonard uh era.
SPEAKER_07Yep.
Jamie FlanaganI think that seat's a little deceptive because uh he's a tall fellow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's uh Sean Leonard, who was one of my high school teammates.
August GitshlagI went to Lakeshore, St. Court Shores Lakeshore. We beat us in districts at East Detroit High School. I was there that day. Son of a bitch. Now that team was a that was like one of the best team high school teams ever come out of Detroit. Absolutely. Absolutely. That was uh that was a great great era.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah. So prospectors went there, you know, played basketball, graduated from Southwestern, went to Grammar State University. Oh, okay, played basketball also there. Then I had a uh devastating uh knee injury. So went there, uh graduated, got my degree, came back to Michigan, and you know, started started my life and you know, and been here ever since.
Jamie FlanaganHustling, hustling, hustling. Yes, sir. Always hustling. Absolutely. So, what brought you to Urban and Wine? What brought you to iconic
From Loss To Wine And Spirits
Jamie Flanaganspirits?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so I'm in the entertainment industry, right? So spending some time in that, I always understood how wine and spirits go together with entertainment from every type of aspect that you can think of.
August GitshlagThe iconic pictures of uh Dean Martin and uh Frank Sinatra holding it. Absolutely, you know, that was a thing.
SPEAKER_02So uh with me understanding that it's something I always you know wanted to get into. So during COVID, that's when my mother made a transition during that time. So that inspired me to want to do something to honor my mother's legacy. So we started off with a wine brand first, and the name of that wine brand was called Phyllis Wines, which is named after my mom. Right. So, you know, it took some time to develop it, but the plan was always start with the wine and then scale up to the bourbon. Because you know, myself being a long time, you know, whiskey connoisseur, I would say. Uh something that I always wanted to do, and so that's that's where it led me to here.
August GitshlagThat's an interesting direction because it's such a different process. Yeah, as someone who makes wine and has has messed around with a with a with a garage still, it's a whole different thing. Um, but the wines I you can make them, the whites, you can you can pump them out. I just I'm trying to think of the scale of how you guys are doing this because I do it buckets at a time, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, but so yeah, they go from wine to the booze. So we'll have a whole wine conversation. Yeah. Uh but take and that was why a lot of times people go from the clear liquids, be like, I'm gonna do a bourbon, but it it takes time to to get a bourbon uh in the barrels and out of the barrels. And if people are distilling themselves, a lot of times they start with uh those those the the the the clears and they're white and they're white lightning and they'll make they'll mix it sometimes with the vodka's uh so that's why we've had plenty of them on the show.
August GitshlagYeah, plenty of them on the show, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganSo you jumped right uh into the right into get finding a bourbon that you liked, right? So how long has Black Eden been a thing?
Idlewild And The Black Eden Story
Jamie FlanaganSo Black Eden 1912. That's a that's an important year, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Very uh his historic story, you know, behind the name. So Black Eden was the nickname of a historical black resort community called Idawow, right here in Idaho, Michigan. It's about three and a half hours uh northwest of Detroit. Yeah, and that community was established in 1912. Okay, I didn't realize it was that far back.
Jamie FlanaganI didn't either.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
August GitshlagI mean, we we've all heard, we've all seen the you know, the outcast movie, and we're familiar with it. I never put it in Michigan myself. I always thought for some reason in my head it was in Illinois.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was outside Chicago. But you know what? What's funny is that it is an Idawild, Illinois. Okay, it's not it's not a city, but it's like um there's a golf course there named after Idle. Um I don't know uh the exact history of it there, but that may have been something that you might have, you know.
August GitshlagFor some reason, it's in my head, but I just yeah, but I just I feel like I obviously when I knew you were coming out, I started googling that again and looking into that stuff. So it was just like, oh man, I went down that whole rabbit hole. Yeah, that went down years ago, you know.
Jamie FlanaganSo Idowa was uh an African American resort destination. Those things were a little less commingled in 1912. Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you know, just that's polite.
SPEAKER_02Just to be blunt, uh, during that time, you know, African Americans weren't allowed to go to white resorts to see their own people perform entertained. So Idowa was birthed out of that. Yeah, and one of the early curators of the community was Dr. Daniel Hell Williams, who was the first doctor to perform open heart surgery. Right? So it's like, yeah, yes, and so he recruited some of his friends, uh, Dr. W. D. Du Bois, uh, Madame CJ Walker, some others to buy property in Idaho. And so this became uh a hub for African Americans uh to go to. So during the height of the community was during what was called the Chitlin Circuit. You guys familiar with the Chill Circle. That have not heard of that. I have heard of that. You've heard of Chick-fil-A. Okay, so the Chillin' Circuit was it was a time where musicians, again, weren't allowed to go to big places to perform. So they went to a lot of smaller places where we can say juke joints. Yeah, sure. Right, right, that's right. Yes, throughout the time. And so Idawa became one of those places that was a favorite for everyone to come to. One, because of course it was a black-owned place with over 300 black-owned businesses, you know, so they felt very safe during that time. Yeah, when when people didn't feel safe even just driving down the street. Absolutely. So it was a very, and I'm talking about your who's who in music from James Brown to Edda Jane, Starawan, Billy Holiday, Jizzy Palepsey, uh BB King, your who's who. And not just uh entertainers, but also other notable people in the in the community, you know, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Lewis, uh Dela Reese, all these people used to hang out in Ottawa with their families, and then it was a place where they you know come together and just have a great, great time. And not just only those notable people, but just regular everyday people as well, you know, will come there and just you know, just have a great, great time.
SPEAKER_05So interesting. What what was what was there an intent as far as the location goes? As far as like as far as the being there as opposed to Battle Creek or Port Huron. Well, you know what?
SPEAKER_02The the opportunity presented itself for that piece of land that which you know happened to be in that particular area, which is actually in the city of Baldwin. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay, yeah. My in-laws live on Oxbow Lake.
SPEAKER_02Okay, right in Baldwin. Yes, okay, okay. Yeah, so it was just an opportunity then that you know they took advantage of that, and that's how you know just became that hub. And so you had you know, people from uh not just the Midwest, but you know, the East Coast, West Coast, they know that came there and just you know had a great time.
Jamie FlanaganSo when it was referred to as a Black Eden, yes, that's so that was the nickname.
August GitshlagSo I haven't got my hands on that bottle yet. Is this the story that's on the back? Because you got some text back there, my man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just a short, short paragraph, a little bit of information. Yeah, just the does bring it up.
August GitshlagOkay, good of the history. Okay, but the readers are a man of a certain age, you gotta put another reader. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04That's it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, yeah. And so and our connection to the community is that my family also has a lake home there. Oh, nice. And so when we decided to create a brand, we wanted to create it after something that represented a period that represented black essence, as well as pay homage to the history. Is that a picture on there? Is that the lake? Is it so that is that is the lake. That is Lake Ottawa. Okay, and everyone's everyone's lake home were all around the lake.
SPEAKER_04Oh
Proof Choice And First Tasting Notes
SPEAKER_04all right.
August GitshlagSo when you were selecting this, yes, sir. You chose 90 proof. Did you think about going higher or lower? How did you settle on 90?
SPEAKER_02Well, so 90, we wanted to do something that was flexible, right? So we wanted something that you know had some kick to it, but also the flavor profile was sort of uh upfront, so you're able to taste, you know, some good flavor. We know we understand um we have a lot of you know, bourbon connoisseurs that you know they like heat on the back end.
SPEAKER_00And then you like oh, I'm a rye guy. Sorry, that's why I like it. You like a little spicy, little spice of your life, right? Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And so and others like to just enjoy the taste of it. So we want to do something now we thought was balanced. It's not gonna blow your head off, and yeah, it's not you're just 80. It's not just 80, but and one thing we've been learning since we've been in the business is that a lot of women enjoy our person as well. Oh, okay. Yes.
Jamie FlanaganI like women that enjoy personal.
SPEAKER_03All right, here you guys ready? Guys, ready? Yep.
SPEAKER_05Oh, good one. August, that's the best pop you've ever had.
SPEAKER_04That's what she's all right.
SPEAKER_01There we go. That was cherry, August.
Jamie FlanaganThat was that was pretty good. That was the cherry.
SPEAKER_01You bought it.
Jamie FlanaganSo, all right, so you came up, you're like, I want to do a bourbon. You came up with the name, you came up with the concept, and then you're like, I have to source the whiskey, right? So uh you've partnered with uh you're getting it out of Illinois.
SPEAKER_02So uh so our distillery is in Illinois. However, we we did source our our juice through MGP. And you know, a lot a lot of people, you know, a lot of people do. We we have no shame in that game. Oh yeah, no, we we understand like that. Yeah, we know MGP makes great juice and they try to source 60% of the bourbon that's people.
August GitshlagHow much of your own your own uh product you're using these days?
SPEAKER_02As we say, we like for you to pour your own truck.
August GitshlagThe cause and solution to all of life's problems.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yes sir, yes sir.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna live on my wrap. So you're gonna pour my own.
SPEAKER_02We party with them, sourced our barrels through them, and then our distillery is actually in Illinois, and so that is where all the magic takes place. So, all right, so you source some juice from them, and then what what happens to it? So we source the juice from them, then we uh we do our blending in Illinois and we we proof it, and that's where we you know do some things to it to create customize your magic, absolutely, and you've been you've you've found that you can keep it consistent, yes, because that's always a challenge that everybody that's in the in your art this side of the business is like you got to prove to me that you can bring it the same case to case, case to case, month to month.
August GitshlagYes, yes, and it is an art, it is a change.
Jamie FlanaganIt is an art, so two two eagles distillery, yes, sir. And that's and and so what happens, what happens when you get to to two eagles? Is that the ancient Chinese secret? You can't tell us, yeah. Yeah, KMC recipe.
SPEAKER_02I won't be able to let all three of you leave out of here alive. All right, all right.
SPEAKER_05How about how about one?
SPEAKER_01I'm over here.
August GitshlagWe can't hear Matt. Matt's trying to say something over there. He's like, I'm over here, you can't kill me. You have your hand raised, Matt. What's up?
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say, I'm gonna I'm gonna live vicariously through the four of you while I look up at you. All right. So I'm gonna live vicariously, and I want to know exactly what the first reaction you get when you taste it for the first time.
August GitshlagSo Matt is usually the guy who immediately says, I got cherry vanilla, you know, leather shoe oil, and you know, meats foot oil. I got comes out with all the crazy flavors.
SPEAKER_05Dirty peat moss, yeah. Well, he's been trampled by a cow. Yeah.
August GitshlagYeah, with hints of vanilla.
unknownYeah, right. Yeah.
Jamie FlanaganSo it's a straight on the label, it says it's a straight bourbon whiskey. And and so straight bourbon whiskey, there's there's gotta be some corn in here. There's bourbon bourbon whiskey, but a straight bourbon whiskey. What's the straight? So straight, straight just means there's nothing added to it, no additive uh to it.
August GitshlagNo, yeah, yeah, no coloring, that kind of stuff. Yeah, you can't.
SPEAKER_02So I will say your your mash bill, is it on the bottle? I didn't know. Uh so the mash bill is not on the bottle. However, I can tell you the mash bill is 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% marted barley.
August GitshlagYeah, you can get that corn. The sweetness of smells right away. Right away.
SPEAKER_05I will say on the nose, even though that's just 90 proof, it's got a stronger nose to it.
August GitshlagIt's got the well, I don't I don't think it does.
Jamie FlanaganNo, you don't think it does smell super sweet. I got cherry on the nose.
August GitshlagBut yeah, I the last time I had a I smelled something this sweet, it was a cask gauged. It was like a rum or a sherry or something like that. Like, so you get that nose right away. I mean, we know it's not, but yeah, I knew right away it was a heavy corn, which is fine with me. I yeah, yeah, I love that kind of shit. Yes, you can swear here.
Jamie FlanaganBut it's not it's not corny, it didn't smell corny.
August GitshlagWe've had some that are no, we have some that smell like it was like like yeah, Easter dinner corn.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, I was always getting different noses.
August GitshlagI always want to call out higher higher in the in the in the corn, yeah, in the mesh. So we're losing you, man. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, you're good. I always want to call out a specific uh bourbon that we've had in the past that was really corny.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, oh no.
Jamie FlanaganWhich one was that? I was just one of the brands that we played with.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, one of the brands. It was just super corny.
Jamie FlanaganIf you can't say anything nice, then just don't say it at all. Don't say anything at all. All right, fair. But oh, sugary. I'm getting uh like sugar sugar cookies now on the nose.
August GitshlagYep, I got that right away.
Jamie FlanaganSo not on the first nose now that I've had the sip.
August GitshlagThat's the corn.
SPEAKER_02I I love I love when everyone, you know, has uh their own palate who work you know for themselves their own senses, yeah. Tell me what what they get, you know.
August GitshlagI love it. I I was I tried to get one of my childhood run I run into people on opening day. So I do all the high holy holidays of drunken obligation in Detroit, and and and opening day was the sixth and final one that I have to day drink. And I ran into some childhood friends that we planned it. It's a law we all met up. It is a law in my life in my life, it's a law. And he's like, you know, I'm not a big bourbon guy, so I got him a Woodford, and he's like, All right, this is okay. I'm like, you gotta come on the podcast. I go, why? He goes, I go, because you're not a bourbon guy. I want your reaction when we're doing tastings and we're trying some of this stuff. And if your face goes weird, it isn't gonna offend anybody because we're gonna make sure everyone knows you're not a bourbon drinker to start. But we want what you're tasting, what you're smelling, right? Without a previous, you know, two years of doing this shit and tasting stuff. Yeah, we we need we need a rookie, yeah. I want a rookie and a voice and his goofy reactions to stuff, you know. It's almost like, hey, smell my finger and see what happens, you know. But he bailed on us tonight. But we'll get him, we'll get him.
SPEAKER_01We'll get him, we'll get him.
Jamie FlanaganJohn, I I like this. I'm getting I'm getting sugar cookies on this, and it's it's finishing nice.
August GitshlagI will definitely not, I will lower my simple syrup addition to this old fashioned because I don't think I need it. I like the sweetness that it comes with now.
SPEAKER_05And and even with the sweetness, you still got that little bit of bite. That that's that's what I yeah, if there's no bite, I I just yeah, it doesn't do it for me.
August GitshlagWe've had so many different spirits that we've tried here, and we always talk about the mash bills. We talk about that's always Matt's thing. He always asks about the mash bills. I am a rye guy. Okay, and I like that. I like I like the spice and I like the malted barley. It's it's refreshing my almost my my own palate to have one that's sweeter. Kind of like a bullet. Bullet is sweet like this too. Bullet's a little corn heavy. Yeah, and I don't drink a lot of bullet, I drink the bullet rye. This is nice. This is this is an easy drinking bourbon that's not gonna hurt. It's it's better. I don't know what it's better than yet. You know what? I always say what it's better or worse than when I know how much it costs.
SPEAKER_05Well, see, well, we can already say it's better than most of your generic brands that you get at the end.
August GitshlagYou keep my wild turkey out of your mouth, David. You keep my wild turkey out of your mouth.
SPEAKER_05Wild turkey, Jack, you know.
August GitshlagI love wild turkey. All of the wedding whiskeys we were just we started with well, wedding whiskeys are c are are Canadian in the state. Yeah, wedding whiskeys are all Canadian, Jack Daniels or CC and C C, yep. They're all crown royal is your premium wedding whiskey in the state of Michigan. That's just what it is. Go to weddings out of state. Ain't no one heard of that shit. Ain't no secrets in seven. You're doing seven and sevens anywhere except bowling alleys in Michigan and weddings, you know.
Jamie FlanaganMan, yes. There's some nice legs on this, too. Thank you. Uh, there's yeah, it's it's there's some there's some there's some legs hanging out there in the the Glencarens.
SPEAKER_01The oils are doing what they're supposed to.
Bottle Design And TTB Approval
Jamie FlanaganThey are they are they are John. As far as coming up with the the packaging and design, we've talked to uh a few several people and uh getting your getting the packaging approved, what sort of experience did you have with with that? Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, with designing the bottle, uh no experience actually.
SPEAKER_03You know, just something that but how is like dealing with the government, right? Oh well, that's always the challenge, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, I mean, because I mean it's great, it's a great package.
SPEAKER_02I would talk about getting it approved by the governmental forces T T B who uh approves all your colas. Yeah, it no, it was it was it was a challenge, but the one thing I did get sent back on anything? No, I was gonna say we we hit it the first time. Yeah, you had a little did you have a little tutoring or something?
August GitshlagGood for you and your patent lawyers and everybody else. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03MGP people are like, hey, trust me. You know, they they earn their money. So good, good, good for you. Yeah, so we didn't have a problem with that. Well, that's good.
August GitshlagSo many people it's like, ah, I don't know, back to the drawing board. Try try again. The nightmare that hard luck vodka went through with their getting they had the greatest bottle in the world. And they're launched all over the place. And then after a year and a half, two years, they get sued because they sold the same bottle to somebody else that the company screwed them over, and but it didn't sue the company that did the bottles. They screwed the company that bought the bottles. And it's like, oh my God, what are you talking about? It's America. Sue everybody.
SPEAKER_02It doesn't mean you're going to win, but everybody.
August GitshlagI mean, it comes from the top down, if you know what I mean.
Jamie FlanaganYeah. Sue them. All right. Well, that's good. So there was no big arduous task on uh the shape of the bottle, right? Because this is uh a little different. It's uh a skinny, almost uh like in a tall, tall flask esque.
SPEAKER_02The actual the name of this bottle shape is called a Kingston.
Jamie FlanaganOkay.
SPEAKER_02Yes, so it was something we wanted something that had like a nice vintage look to it, uh something that that was sort of you know sleek, started sleek, but then starts to you know broaden up at the shoulders. We wanted like some nice sexy shoulders, yeah. With a you know, nice neck because as you see, our cap strap right here goes around the bottle. Yeah, and so a lot of other brands, you may not see this type of cap strap. They normally would just have something plastic.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, something plastic.
SPEAKER_02So these cap straps are they're very, very tedious to put on. So we, you know, we we had a hard time doing that, but every single bottle we had to put these on here, and so we you know, we like child labor shit right there, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02We like the long neck, you know, with the with the crescent and the B and the E. Just again, we wanted something, a nice classic vintage look. And you went cork, yes.
August GitshlagThat's an expense. That was a conscious decision to go cork because you always know you're gonna go real cork and not synthetic cork or just a twist off.
SPEAKER_02No, no, we we wanted something that again, you know, because this is something we want to capture an experience in a bottle, right? So we didn't want to go synthetic, we want something nice, cork, natural, and just again to fit the whole ambiance of the bottle.
Jamie FlanaganAnd it's all silk screened on the bottle or printed on the bottle. Yes, and again, that's an expense. It is an expense. We chose expensive as this damn bottle, Jack. We'll get to it, we'll get to it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but we we chose to do something we didn't want to like do printed labels. Uh, we thought that a screen print, something that's there. Yeah, on it's is a much more classier look.
August GitshlagSo it's quite, and there's so much competition. I want this on my bar. I want visuals right now.
Jamie FlanaganI want this on my bar. I want I want it looks nice, it tastes great. It I want it, I want it on my bar. So, but yeah, it's yeah, that one's not going, that's going on dad's shelf if that gets left behind. Oh, it gets locked in with the cleaning with the cleaning stuff, you know what's where it is. It gets locked up, but yeah, so that's it's it's it's it's nice. So these are a lot of expenses going into it. Yes, and yet, because I saw it on the shelf and I wasn't like, oh hell no. Because I a lot of times I see a bottle and I'll go, oh hell.
August GitshlagDoes that come with the retail? Did we get that packaging and the retail experience? So it was uh no, that's actually that's going back with you? Yeah, that's yeah, that's coming back with that's a fun little I didn't know if it was like a wine holder or like a no, this is this is something.
SPEAKER_02So when we're gifting bottles um at its different events, uh this is something that we use. And this is my wife. Shout out to her, Dr. Wanda Jobert. She's our what you call cure curator specialist, right? So anything on there, I'm sorry, procurement specialist. I got it. There you go.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, yes, so that's uh that that's brilliant. It's a great, great package. Oh, thanks. So,
Price Point Age And Distribution
Jamie Flanaganall right, there you go. MSRP up on the shelf. What are we looking at?
SPEAKER_02So the average, depending on where you're at, the average is between 50 and 54. Okay, what's the state minimum here then? Yeah, so the state minimum here is 49.
August GitshlagOkay, so it's a $50 bottle. Yeah, yeah. Okay, and then you're gonna depend on the bottom. It's 49. 49 is kind of the standard going right. Yeah, we were just we were talking about it two or three weeks ago. Yeah, $50 bottle.
Jamie FlanaganI mean, if it's yeah, if it's any more, I gotta fill up my gas tank for that. So it's like, you know, you're you didn't gauge it on how much your gas tank is. Not right now, right?
August GitshlagMy Bronco Sport is my Bronco Sports rather than no kidding me? No.
SPEAKER_05So how long has this this creation existed?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. This is three about three and a half years.
Jamie FlanaganSo you've been doing this three and a half years? Okay, and the wine, the wine was how long before?
August GitshlagIt took it long enough to get here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I just heard about you guys. And that the wine is a uh a little under four years. Okay, so I'm on Simon Tennessee, but we did get a little head start uh with the wine.
Jamie FlanaganOkay, yeah, because yeah, like I said, the puffs and drinks, the other podcast. I invited them, they didn't come, so you know you don't have to go on their show. No, no, they would really love to have you. You guys would have a right, but uh they they introduced me to it last week and and super I lost where I was going, but super, super excited about it.
SPEAKER_05So, what what's your distribution right now? So uh my question. Sorry, man, you should be here.
SPEAKER_02So right now we we are in six states. So we're we're in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, Nevada, Maryland, DC, and we're getting ready to launch into the Georgia market in May. Nice.
August GitshlagSo you did the Vegas market. Now, I haven't talked to friends in the friend, like I mentioned hard luck vodka. They they had a uh an owner, an investor who pushed they had to go to Vegas because everyone comes to Vegas and they'll see it and they'll ask for it back home.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, okay.
August GitshlagWas that your thought process here? Or is it value? Like you thought you could just move product there.
SPEAKER_02We well, we Vegas was one of those, well, Nevada period was one of those targeted markets. Um because yeah, they're easier to get in. One, we had uh we we do have um our partners are in in Vegas there uh from here to Detroit, but they're in Vegas now. So we have we have uh booths on the ground there you want people. Literally, so we definitely want to get you know into that market.
Jamie FlanaganSo so I iconic spirits. Yes, sir. Who is iconic spirits? Is that you or do you have a uh uh is with an I? Yeah, with I think it's okay because we're special.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So yeah, who is icon? So I iconic iconic spirits is me. You know, okay. I I really created and birthed iconic spirits, of course, with the you know, support of my wife, but uh iconic iconic is me. And um, again, by me spending time in the entertainment industry, I have an entertainment group called iconic entertainment group. Okay, so you know we're just keeping things iconic.
SPEAKER_05All right, so a little off track since you brought that up. What kind of what kind of entertainment acts do you represent?
SPEAKER_02So I have an independent record label, so I have some hip hop artists. I have actually uh a legend of film C uh by the main name of Moni Love. Of course I know Moni Love is Moni Love, yes.
August GitshlagSo she's I'm a man of a certain age. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So she she's my artist. Have a couple of groups here that's based here in uh Michigan, and we're getting ready to take on uh someone else who is at a jazz soul, a legend. I don't want to announce her name yet because we're still finished up on the paperwork. But uh, was that a sex change?
August GitshlagDon't worry, he's not listening.
SPEAKER_02So those that's that was my yeah, you know, and I started off uh doing management and then from you know throughout the year, just getting relationships led me to getting a distribution deal with the Orchard, which is the subsidiary of Sony. So, you know, that was sort of fell in my lap. So you know, I couldn't turn that opportunity down.
SPEAKER_05So if you ever want to get into the entertainment comedy portion of things, I do hypnosis shows. We'll we'll talk later. Okay, he is the motor city hypnotized. He's looking to get signed.
August GitshlagYeah, in fact, I'm having hypnotize me to stop any potatoes. This week, this weekend every week did it work? He said I ask him every week, he won't do it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. This weekend I had to Iowa for a post-prom party.
August GitshlagSo yeah, yeah, you'll do it. I'm actually afraid he'll do he'll meet tell stories on the podcast and hypnotizes me. Yeah, right, yeah, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganIt's way too much.
August GitshlagAt one time when I poop in the cat box, don't run, don't grunt as a good time.
SPEAKER_05One of these episodes, one of one of these nights, and and we're gonna keep August and Jamie and Matt all here, and I'm gonna hypnotize you guys for my show.
SPEAKER_02Okay, make sure you guys sign disclosure.
August GitshlagYeah, absolutely. Yeah, right. That one cannot be live on Facebook. That's it. I cannot be liable. Yeah, it cannot be live on Facebook.
Future Releases Tasting Room Plans
Jamie FlanaganYeah, so John, how how long is this aged, right? So you you get it from MVP. Great question, but never asked that.
SPEAKER_03And then this is uh four years old.
Jamie FlanaganFour okay, that's nice.
SPEAKER_03Because two to be bourbon, you have to be two.
SPEAKER_02So you're going four, yes, all right, yes, all right, and we and we do have some more aging, so we're uh we're gonna pull the trigger on the older barrels.
August GitshlagWhat's the next step? Yeah, you have a next step that you we have a next step.
SPEAKER_02We're probably gonna come out with something that's older, that's aging right now. But you're sticking with bourbon, yeah. We're gonna stick with bourbon, okay.
August GitshlagYeah, for now, for now. All right, yeah, for now. An older expression of this mash bill. Yes.
Jamie FlanaganAll right, okay. All right, because this is a lot of times we'll get young brands and you're like, oh, that's young. Yeah, and you can take it. And this isn't this wasn't oh, that's young.
August GitshlagAnd it's our it's our local guys, it's our Detroit guys, and we know, and then you know, they're just want to push the product out as fast as they can.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, well, it's how they gotta keep a doors open understanding because you know you have to pay bills, and the doors open.
Jamie FlanaganYou're like, that'll make a hell of a cocktail. Yeah, yeah. I mean, even this, I will, I will do straight. This is do you have any I'll even do it with my gay friends. I don't know why that even happened.
unknownOkay.
August GitshlagUh any tasting room or space ideas in the future.
SPEAKER_02Uh, yes, we are that's another phase that we're working on partnering up to establish the tasting room so we can start doing that. But you know, right now in the stores that you know that we're in, you know, we do a lot of a lot of tastings.
Jamie FlanaganYou are the man on you are the man on the street. You you because a lot of times you go, oh, so such and such a store is having a tasting. Yeah, and they're just some cleavage and uh spokes model. Hair view and a cleavage. And then here, taste this. It's John's in there, yeah, yeah, telling his story. I mean, he's a good looking dude. What do you mean here doing a cleavage?
unknownYeah, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganBut I love that that we went and it was like, oh no, this is my brand. And we're like, holy crap, okay, awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we know we we we do have a taster tasting team, yeah. But uh but I really like to you know go to the stores. I like to be able to, you know, shake hands and really talk to the people and just you know let them know, you know, about the brand and tell them about the history. So I like that connection, and it also makes people feel a connection to the brand because you know you're you're speaking with the owner. And how many times are you gonna get an opportunity to speak to an owner of a brand?
Jamie FlanaganSo you've met a lot of people out at tastings. What is something somebody said either about a connection to uh have you met anybody who's had like a connection to uh to Idlewild? Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, yeah.
August GitshlagWhat was what's the best story you got out on the road? It's gotta be some of those stories gotta be just make you like it it does.
SPEAKER_02It does. It's it's funny because uh like so. We we sponsor a comedy show in Idaho every year. This would be the fifth year. It's called Comedy in the Wild. And so a lot of people, you know, come through there. And of course, you know, I don't remember everybody that comes through there, but when you know, we have some people might come into a store and they look and they be like, wait a minute, I remember you. We were at the comedy show. Uh yeah, you know, and so I like that because it's familiarity, you know, with the brand, and uh we we love it, we love it.
SPEAKER_05Well, I will give you credit as far as just like boots on the ground doing I mean he's the man I well he's the man I again very short sidebar. I have a good friend who started a tequila company about 10 years ago. First two or three years, he and his wife were in every store every day. They were seven days a week, they were in stores.
SPEAKER_02And yes, that I mean that's that's how you grow it. That's what you have to do. When so we're you know, we're considered a boutique brand, which you know, which which is fair. Get to it. You do it. Absolutely, absolutely. And so when you when you're like that, so you have to get out. Yeah, you have to to get in the market, you have to boost on the ground again, get in all these places, you know, spaces and places, and just you know, talk about the brand. Because what we want is we want more eyes and ears on our brand as possible. So you gotta get out there and you know, you have to do it.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, that you have to ask it. And that's why that I'm sure that's why a lot of companies fail after three years, or who knows?
August GitshlagI mean, yeah, I wonder how many Matt's trying to talk about.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm sorry, Matt's barely here. Yeah, Matt's not here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so John, I you what I really enjoy about what you're doing is that you're you're you're growing organically. You're you're letting people speak about your brand, you got your tasting team, but you are growing organically because yes, being a boutique brand is is great, but there's another phase to growth, and organic growth is the best way to go. It's word of mouth, it's people talking about what you do and how you do it. I I'm just I'm not there tasting it, but I can tell there's passion behind what you're doing. So thank you. Thank you. I appreciate what you do.
August GitshlagWell, we've had one other owner on the show since I've been here for the two and a half, three years. Duke and Dame.
unknownYep.
August GitshlagWas that an owner? Oh, yeah, he was an owner. He wasn't a brand guy, he was an owner. Yeah, we just got lucky that he had family in Southfield, so he was a town. Right, right. We've had owners on the show, but never in studio, right? We've had owners that like out more outside and doing these at whiskey tastings and stuff like that. But uh and Duke and Dame is another black-owned brand. Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_02I am familiar with them. I I do know them.
August GitshlagYeah, they are uh their whole thing was cruise ships. Yeah, that's that's their wanted to push their product on cruise ships. I'm like, I get it. All right, cock pills on cruise ships.
Jamie FlanaganAll right, they see it, and when they get home, they want to see it, yeah. So that's the that's the point. Wow.
Phyllis Wines Meaning And Legacy
Jamie FlanaganAll right, John. So we got to talk about Phyllis, right? So we'll come back and uh crack a couple bottles of wine. But Phyllis has the logo is like a tree. Can you tell them anything? Uh can we do a little spoiler layer on that one about the tree and the Phyllis logo?
SPEAKER_02I'll give you a little spoiler. So, first of all, the name Phyllis, we're not researched the name, it means the strongest uh root of a tree. And so that is why that is why that logo is a tree, and it happens to be purple, which was my mother's birthstone as well as her favorite color. All right, I love that. We save the rest.
August GitshlagWe'll say we'll save the rest for that. I'm gonna bring my Moscato in because he's a wine guy, and we're gonna do I'm gonna throw down with my sorry about the mess labeled Moscato. I'm a big Han Solo fan of Star Wars guy. Then there's that scene where he shoots Guido and he goes, sorry about the mess, but flips the coin on. I remember that. So then when you're making wine at home, you just make a mess. And my cousin, who's a tattoo artist, who's a very well-known tattoo artist, does a lot of the lions and stuff like that. He painted this amazing painting of Han Solo's blaster with like the roses, all the traditional tattoo roses around it, and it says sorry about the mess and a banner going across it. And so we scanned it in and made it my wine label. Oh, nice, it's it's pretty cool, very authentic, I would say. Yeah, oh yeah. And so the paintings hanging up on the wall in my house, and then the labels on the wine that I make, and uh and just give the friends. Nice. So nice. I have some mascot.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'm gonna say you can't sell it because you get with a copyright.
August GitshlagNo, no, I don't, I don't, well, no, no, no, no. I don't sell it anyway. No, no, I know. What I do do when I make wine, I have a guy who says, Hey, I'll buy the wine. If you make it and bottle it, I'll give you like 500 bucks and I'm gonna put my label on it. Because I want to because I also want to take the time to make it and bottle it. I'm like, cool. Yeah, and I overcharge him and it pays for all of the things.
SPEAKER_05It pays for the next the next pass.
August GitshlagThat my girlfriend drinks and I give away. That my family just drinks on holidays. So yeah. Yeah, I just went through uh some um my my winter white blend, which I might, if I have one in the car, I'll give it to you. I might have one left in the car. And my Pinot Noir. And I just ran out of the Pinot. I'm gonna start my my family's favorite is my Blackberry Pinot, but I can't get the same blackberry juice I always had, so god damn it, I'm on a tangent, but I'm looking for blackberry juice. I spent an hour at work today, sorry, boss, looking for a good blackberry juice source to get some good blackberry juice to put in my next batch of wine. So anyway, yeah, I I I fuck with wine. That's my thing. Nice, yes.
Jamie FlanaganAll right, John. We're looking forward to the next expression. Oh, yeah, absolutely. We're absolutely and we'll when you the wise, we'll come back. We'll do the when you uh when you're feeling it. Do you have a good summer wine? Maybe we'll we'll wait till it gets a little moscato. Moscato is a sweet, yes, it was yes, yes.
SPEAKER_02Now we're well, we'll wait. We'll have a wine conversation going on. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I agree. There we go. And we will do that. I do want to make an
Meyer Launch And Retail Whiskey Talk
SPEAKER_02announcement. Yeah, we'll be in Myers. Um, starting uh next month in May.
August GitshlagWe absolutely are from Detroit because you put an S on the end.
SPEAKER_02You are you are homegrown. That's why we'll be in 120 Myers instead of you'll be able to go to your nearest Myers.
SPEAKER_01That's why, that's why I could not find it yesterday. I went to the Meyer down the street here and I was looking for your stuff.
SPEAKER_02Go to Total Wine.
SPEAKER_01Uh well, there's I'm in Grand Rapids. There's not a total wine on it, but I went to Meyer and I'm like, I'm looking for it, I'm looking for it, and I couldn't find it to know that you're gonna be in Myers going forward.
SPEAKER_02So the uh the Grand Rapids Total Wine, we are in there as well. So all right, yeah.
Jamie FlanaganSo the Total Wines and uh local independence, and now Meyer. That's awesome. Did you check?
August GitshlagDid you check for the the clearance section at the Meyer?
SPEAKER_01I did. No, there was no list.
Jamie FlanaganNo list, no list. Meyer does like a little sale thing on the bourbon. We did this a couple episodes back, and uh yeah, the Meyer I go to normally doesn't have it. The the big box stores can do this, they can apply for half off.
SPEAKER_05We talked about this. I have looked for it and I've not seen it yet.
August GitshlagAnd they have to it's they did it in January. Yep, January to April. They they they apply for half off the clear inventory. Okay, and they have to have so they cannot have more than X amount of bottles on stock. And they have to they apply to the state and they can sell it for half off, and they have to clip a list of everything that's half off at the end of the liquor aisle so people can look at it. Wow and they can that's why we grabbed it.
Jamie FlanaganBut then they can't reorder, they cannot reorder for a year.
August GitshlagFor a year, okay, yeah, and they do it and it's at three months, and if you don't sell it in three months, it goes back to full price. So I got a bottle of redemption weeded for $25. Wow. I mean, the good stuff because that that specific mire wasn't moving it. Yeah, everything else on the list was like new Amsterdam pineapple come shot. It was like dunk dunk shit. You know, apple brandy pear gin from you know Loveless, you know, something you've never heard of. Yeah, but they you know, you can't like have like 36 cases of Buffalo Trace and apply for it and try to undermine the competition, they won't let you do it. Okay, so it's as a rule to it, so yeah, absolutely. That's why there's a rule to it. But they'll they know these big box stores are inundated from these distributors about carrying these products, and if you want to get rid of all your you know, coconut blush or whatever, blush barrel age gin, you gotta still let you off it at half off. So if you really want that for seven dollars because they're only charging 15 for it, you can get it. But that the there's occasionally a bourbon that wasn't moving, they only had one case of. Yeah, because they because everyone, every mire has sometimes there's a gym, every mire has an individual beverage manager, yeah. And Kroger does the same thing. Yep, they have a beverage manager who will apply and say these are the ones. It's all about what time of year they apply for their dump. Yep, yeah, and you can see those because I grabbed a bottle of bullet tenure about a year and a half ago on an NCAP at Kroger. I'm like, how can they do this? This shit ain't legal. Yeah, yeah. I know the book. I worked at a bar for 18 years. I know you can't do this. Yeah, and I'm like, some kid's gonna get fired, but I'm gonna buy this before he gets fired. I talked about that. That was my whole idea. Good for you, though. Yeah, good for me.
Jamie FlanaganGood for the consumer. I talked to Tony, Big Tony, the wine garden in uh Sinclair Shores. This is a good place to get into. But connection will help you make. Talk to yeah, talk to Big Tony, and and he I mentioned that to him. He's like, Oh, yeah, yeah, you can do that. But he goes, I goes, I just sit on him because he sits on him, small the store is the independent, so I will just sit on it.
August GitshlagYeah, it's it's the big guys that that that do the half off thing to clear shelf space.
Jamie FlanaganYeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, all right, John.
Festival Plans Links And Sign-Off
Jamie FlanaganAnything else? Uh we got the we got the big mire now, but that is so exciting.
August GitshlagAny any events coming up where you're doing a tasting or cocktail or something when you show up at uh urban craziness?
SPEAKER_02Uh the bourbon festival in Detroit. Well, Metro Detroit Bourbon Festival, which will be in Southfield, isn't it? Yes, in Southfield. Yeah, so we will be there. So you know, come out, hang out, come by our booth, and and you know, get you a taste, and I'll I'll be there. So you know, all right. Come and see me talk.
August GitshlagHey, uh Jamie, see if you can get the guy who organizes that, get us a box of that. All right. By that I mean a table there. Yeah, we'll work out.
Jamie FlanaganWe'll work out. All right, John. Thank you. Thank you so much. Uh yeah, thank you.
August GitshlagThank you for sharing and sharing your passion with us, sharing, you know, your this is your project, your passion. This is very cool to sit and talk to you about it. And it's kind of thing that makes me shake a little bit, having been a Detroit historian and you know, the the Ossian Sweet story on the east side and all that kind of stuff is important to me growing up. This is awesome. I love that.
Jamie FlanaganI love I love I love the history. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
August GitshlagThe history is what makes me like well up a little bit. Yeah, I love it. Having grown up and you know, working for a Detroit state black senator, you know, I'm I'm I'm in politics. So that's kind of like what I do. So all right. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Appreciate it, man.
Jamie FlanaganThanks for having me. Black Eden1912.com. Yes, Black Eden 1912 on the shelf. Yes, sir. And all those links will be in the uh show notes and do all the podcast things in all the podcast places. But we are missing one thing, Mr. Flanagan. What are we missing?
SPEAKER_07Well, we didn't talk about my iris radio.
SPEAKER_01Goddamn online Irish shit that we can't escape here. Always gotta do it.
Jamie FlanaganBrought to you by the 24-7 on Ryan Radio.
SPEAKER_05So, John, just some background. Jamie does a radio show called My Irish Radio.
August GitshlagThat is what we put into tastings in terms of mixing into wizard.
unknownLike, what are you doing?
August GitshlagSo I maybe does it. I have a hidden hat that I throw out and start yelling at a bad Scottish accent.
Jamie FlanaganDoes bad culturally insensitive?
August GitshlagYes. Appropriating Irish. Yes. Because we all want those potatoes, you know.
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean I guess. I think we love the three of us are probably Irish anyway. So I got enough in me.
August GitshlagI have I have a lot. A disturbing amount of French, but German.
Jamie FlanaganAll right, we'll uh we'll do it all again very, very soon. Gentlemen, cheers, cheers, brothers, cheers, brothers, cheers, guys.
