About a week ago, I received a phone call from an unknown number. Thinking it was just a telemarketer, I picked up disgruntled. Turns out it was Olympic legend, Dan Gable, responding to an email I had send out weeks ago.I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised.A day later I traveled to Dan's home in Iowa City to interview him for the podcast. It was a fascinating conversation and I wish I would've had the mic rolling as he gave me a tour through his home. For those of you who don't know Dan is an Olympic gold medal winner and one of the greatest wrestlers AND wrestling coaches to ever live. His accolades as a Coach include:Coached Iowa to 15 NCAA Titles21 yr. record of 355-21-5 (94.4%)Big Ten record of 131-2-1 (98.5%)21 Big Ten Team TitlesCoached 45 National ChampionsCoached 152 All-AmericansCoached 106 Big Ten Champions3x NCAA Coach of the Year7 perfect seasons9 Consecutive NCAA titlesNCAA record of 170 team points in 19971980, 1984, 2000 US Olympic Head CoachCoached 12 Hawkeye Olympians‘Sports Figure of the Century in Iowa’ by Sports IllustratedHis accolades as a competitor include:3x Iowa High School State Champion3x Big Eight Champion Iowa State University3x All-American182-1 Combined prep and college record6x Midlands Champion3x USA Freestyle National Champion1971 World ChampionOutstanding Wrestler at Tbilisi Tournament1972 Olympic Gold MedalistDid not surrender a point in Munich GamesTop 100 Olympians of all timeWrestler of the Century by Gannett Co.In this episode Trevor and Dan discuss:-Why you need competition -Difference between good and great wrestler-Experiences wrestling and coaching-What excites him most about going to competitions -How do you get ready for the competition-Getting over stage fright-The importance of mentorship-His family struggles-Getting through challenges using adversityResources from the episode:Heart of a Champion by Bob Richards (http://amzn.to/2xPDwru)A Wrestling Life (http://amzn.to/2wJHa6j)A Wrestling Life 2 (http://amzn.to/2xQ9qV4)This episode was produced by www.helixacademy.coiTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/formula-13-wrestling-tough-lessons-overcoming-adversity/id1267588749?i=1000391934296&mt=2
