Mike Ham [0:14 - 0:15]: Who do you think I am?
Speaker B [0:16 - 0:18]: Where do you see this going?
Speaker C [0:38 - 4:54]: Done. All right, what's up everybody? Cam here coming to you live from the Coquina Jam here at Brant beach in Long Beach Island. Gonna be a great day. Here we are. This is the closest to being a pirate this pirate radio station has ever been. We're on the beach. We got a whole setup on the beach. Toes are in the sand watching the waves. We're gonna be here for six hours at least. This show will be live for six hours. This event goes till 5ish. But we'll be here from 9 to 3. I got a playlist with basically every song that I know. Like eight hours worth of music. So more than enough to get you through the day. And we'll be bringing you all the action as best we can do. Because I don't admittedly don't know a lot about surfing, but we're gonna learn a lot today. I feel like we got. This is the Coquina Jam. I'm gonna tell you a little bit about the Coquina jam. It's the 17th annual. We know that. Here we go. It's an all women's team serve contest and fundraising event. Women are paired randomly after being separated into age pools and compete in this summer event to support women, children and families affected by a cancer diagnosis via David's Dream and Believe Cancer foundation. Who I know we're gonna talk to some of the people from the board a little bit later in the show. And it also supports the Jetty Rock foundation who obviously we are partnered with and we're very to be a partner with the Jetty Rock Foundation. They co host the Coquina jam each year. Again 17th year. So crushing it. To carry on the tradition of supporting the trailblazing women that inspire us to conquer any challenge that may arise. And the Long beach island event has helped donate over 7,575,000 thanks to our participants, beachgoers, sponsors and regional business support. Let's learn a little bit more. We know about the Jetty Rock foundation, but we're going to talk about it anyway. It's a nonprofit arm of the Jetty apparel brand. It's dedicated to protecting our oceans and waterways and supporting those who build their lives around them. As a certified B Corp, Jetty, the coastal brand with a conscience, delivers on our mission on their mission through oyster recycling, environmental stewardship and education provided by the Jetty Rock Foundation. And the David's Dream and Believe Cancer foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit which provides hope through financial assistance, wellness resources and patient support to families affected by a cancer diagnosis. So a great day, a great cause and we're excited to be out here. I'm just gonna look at the waves all day. It's been a long week. Lunch and a couple shows. We had an event which we'll talk about a little bit later. Chris and I were down in Barnegat yesterday with some of our friends, Redbird flying solo and Felipe Rose from the original Village People. But we're gonna play a little music to start your day. It's 9:00am, 9:03 here, Sunday, July 20th. Mike Hay on the radio Garden State Roadshow here at Brant beach and LBi. We'll be here till 3. Six hour show coming to you on radioguardistate.com Tune in Odyssey or Alexa device, wherever you listen. We appreciate it. We're here at the Coquina Jam at Brant beach in LBi all day. We will be here till 3. Well, we'll be broadcasting till 3 o', clock, so six hour show on tap for you. Yesterday we did a great event with Barnegat Pride, their Red Cross blood dry that they did at the Barnegat Recreation Center. We had some good friends out there. Redbird flying solo. We had Felipe Rose who was one of the original members of the original Village People. Not the Village People 2.0 that they got now, but Felipe, the original Native American in the Village People. Great guy. Asbury park guy, that's where I met him. And he came out, performed a couple songs, even ymca. Something tells me that YMCA song is going to be a hit. But we had a lot of fun doing that. Chris and I got a bunch of pics. I'm really trying to get into the photography stuff again. Or again. I've never really been into it, but we're gonna try to do better at it. But I took some good pictures yesterday so we'll be putting that stuff out there. But then last night, met up with some friends here on the island, went down to Bird and Betty's and saw this band, the Gab Cinque Band live. It was way too late. I've been up for too long this week. Spent a week getting up at 4 o', clock, which is a new thing for me. Even today, five o' clock to get here to set up at six. But that's okay.
Mike Ham [4:54 - 4:54]: We're here.
Speaker C [4:54 - 5:04]: It's a good cause. We're having fun. This is the Gab Cinque Band called Saving it for your. We're here at the Coquina Jam. This is the Radio Garden State Roadshow. I'm Mike.
Mike Ham [5:04 - 5:06]: We have our first guest of the day, Ryan. Welcome to the show.
Speaker B [5:06 - 5:07]: Thanks for having me.
Mike Ham [5:09 - 5:10]: Try that again.
Speaker B [5:11 - 5:12]: Thanks for having me.
Mike Ham [5:13 - 5:14]: Oh, it's because I have it turned.
Speaker C [5:14 - 5:16]: All the way down. That's why. There we go.
Speaker B [5:16 - 5:17]: Is that better?
Mike Ham [5:17 - 5:18]: Yeah, there we go.
Speaker C [5:18 - 5:22]: All right, awesome. All right, so Ryan, you're from nine Iron Golf Services.
Mike Ham [5:22 - 5:27]: All right, awesome. Let's talk a little bit about what you guys do, what you got going on here at the Coquina Jam, all that kind of stuff.
Speaker B [5:27 - 5:58]: Sure. We are basically an all encompassing golf business from providing instruction to on site golf simulator rental consulting for with golf tournaments, golf facilities to help improve their business, maximize their returns on investment and things like that. I have over 30 years in the golf industry anywhere from running golf facilities to caddy and coach on professional tours through people who have never played golf before.
Speaker D [5:58 - 5:58]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [5:59 - 6:02]: Amazing. You got like a, there's a game that you got going on back there, right?
Speaker B [6:03 - 6:12]: Yeah, I've got bucket golf set up, which is kind of a backyard beach game, which again, just to me just draws more people into playing the game that I have a passion for.
Mike Ham [6:12 - 6:12]: Yeah.
Speaker B [6:13 - 6:18]: And just makes it a little more fun and mobile for wherever you want to go. You pack it up in a bag, you can take it wherever you're going.
Mike Ham [6:18 - 6:19]: Yeah, I have.
Speaker C [6:19 - 6:21]: I mean, I used to play a lot.
Mike Ham [6:21 - 6:38]: Not a lot. I mean, like multiple times a year. I haven't played in the last couple years though. But it was always like that game where it was like I'd be bad for most of it. I played baseball, so I have like that baseball swing and then. But I'd hit like a couple shots that were pretty good and that's like, keeps me coming back, you know?
Speaker B [6:38 - 6:45]: Yeah, it definitely does. Like, you can, you can play bad most of the day and then all of a sudden you hit like you said, those couple shots. It's like, whoa, no, wait, that was fantastic.
Mike Ham [6:45 - 6:46]: Right.
Speaker B [6:46 - 6:59]: I'm going to do this again. And. But it's, it's a lot harder game chasing that little white golf ball around than most people think. Oh, ball stays still. It's easy to play. But as you can attest to. Yeah, it's not necessarily the case.
Speaker D [6:59 - 6:59]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [6:59 - 7:04]: When around here do you have like some favorite places that you play courses and stuff?
Speaker B [7:04 - 7:18]: I definitely have some favorite places to play. I like LBI national close here to where we're located today, and then a couple more places like a little further south. But there's a ton of great Golf in New Jersey.
Speaker D [7:18 - 7:18]: Yeah.
Speaker B [7:18 - 7:24]: So it's. It's fantastic to be able to get out and explore different new golf courses and things like that.
Mike Ham [7:25 - 7:26]: Yeah, it really.
Speaker C [7:26 - 7:27]: I mean, I.
Mike Ham [7:27 - 7:32]: When I lived in Morris county, like the Morris county county courses are like phenomenal.
Speaker B [7:32 - 7:34]: Yeah. And there's a bunch of them.
Mike Ham [7:34 - 7:34]: It's great.
Speaker C [7:34 - 7:35]: There's six, I think.
Speaker B [7:36 - 7:57]: Right. And I spent a lot of my career in Pennsylvania and other parts of the country. And New Jersey is one of the only places I've encountered that you've got those count. The town owns a golf course or the county owns a golf course and you've got an assortment of courses you can pick from and play. And it's fantastic. Again, I think it just brings more people to the game and makes it a little bit easier for more and more people to enjoy playing.
Speaker D [7:57 - 7:57]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [7:57 - 8:03]: I mean, that's the goal, right, Is just grow the game, make it more, make it accessible to people. You know, all that kind of stuff.
Speaker B [8:03 - 8:20]: Absolutely. Accessible and enjoyable. Yeah, it's. If you're gonna pay money to do something, you should enjoy it. And there's a lot of people who don't. And it's okay. You can be as competitive as you want to be, but you also can get as much enjoyment out of as you want to if you understand and have reasonable and rational expectations for your game.
Speaker D [8:20 - 8:21]: Yeah.
Speaker C [8:21 - 8:23]: Right. And so if people want to learn.
Mike Ham [8:23 - 8:26]: More about Nine Iron Golf, where would you send them to go do that?
Speaker B [8:26 - 8:46]: I would tell them, just check out www.9irongolf.com. We're on the Internet. I've got blog posts, any golf questions, any and all golf questions. I'm happy to entertain and answer to the best of my knowledge. We've got a lot of good things coming up with New Jersey Golf. We've got Happy Gilmore coming out Friday.
Mike Ham [8:46 - 8:47]: That's right.
Speaker D [8:47 - 8:47]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [8:47 - 8:48]: Very excited.
Speaker B [8:48 - 8:58]: We're doing a premiere over in Cinnaminson at Dogle Golf for. We're gonna premiere the movie and have some games and fun stuff going on. So. Yeah.
Speaker D [8:58 - 8:58]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [8:58 - 9:01]: That's awesome. Well, thank you for joining us for a couple minutes.
Speaker B [9:01 - 9:03]: Thank you very much for having me.
Mike Ham [9:03 - 9:04]: The guts to be the first guest on the show.
Speaker B [9:05 - 9:07]: It always starts with one.
Speaker C [9:07 - 9:08]: Yeah. All it takes is one.
Speaker B [9:08 - 9:10]: Just like that one golf shot.
Mike Ham [9:10 - 9:11]: Right? Exactly.
Speaker C [9:12 - 9:30]: The Mayo Performing Arts center is the heart of arts and Entertainment in Morristown, New Jersey. MPAC presents over 200 events annually and is home to an innovative children's arts education program. To see Impact's upcoming schedule of world class concerts. Mike Ham [9:31 - 9:34]: Our second guest of the day, Tim. Welcome to the show.
Speaker E [9:34 - 9:34]: Thanks, Mike.
Speaker C [9:35 - 9:35]: Absolutely.
Mike Ham [9:36 - 9:43]: So we're here at this great event. You and I met, like when I first walked in, which was great. You helped me put on my tent, so thank you for that.
Speaker E [9:43 - 9:44]: It's not a one man job.
Mike Ham [9:44 - 10:04]: No, it is definitely not, but usually it is a one man job for me because usually by myself, but. So it's appreciated, but. So we're here at the Coquina Jam. You and the David Stream and Believe Cancer foundation obviously has a big connection to this event. So let's talk about the. The nonprofit and all that and we'll kind of take it from there.
Speaker E [10:05 - 10:27]: So David of David's Dream and believe diagnosed 2010, decided with Jeremy, who grew up where David lifeguarded, grew up surfing, decided they wanted do a fundraiser to benefit people who had been diagnosed with cancer. So the third annual Coquina Jam.
Speaker D [10:27 - 10:27]: Yeah.
Speaker E [10:27 - 10:43]: Was dedicated to David's Dream and Believe. And since then it's grown exponentially from probably, let's just say a 6, $8,000 event to they've raised in some cases over 100,000 in one year just for David's Dream and Believe.
Mike Ham [10:44 - 10:58]: It's really incredible. We were talking to some people over here like, like next door at Informed Mortgage and some other spots, and just like the connection that it has with the community, with everybody here. And like in 17 years, that's. That's a long time to run something like that.
Speaker E [10:58 - 11:06]: Well, I think that's the special thing is it is a community organization. It's. It's not just a brand. It's a person.
Mike Ham [11:06 - 11:06]: Right.
Speaker E [11:06 - 11:19]: It's a person that lived here, that grew up here, that had relationships. And, you know, what we found is there's so many people that actually want to help other people. And all sometimes you need to do is give them a trusted place to do it.
Speaker D [11:19 - 11:20]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [11:20 - 11:35]: Can we talk about, like, maybe, you know, from your standpoint, Coquina Jam, like when the idea was formed, like this was going to be the event. Can you take me through maybe like, what the thought process was around that and why a female surf competition? Why, you know, why all this?
Speaker E [11:35 - 11:39]: Yeah, I don't. It existed before us. We came in, in year three.
Mike Ham [11:39 - 11:40]: Okay.
Speaker E [11:40 - 12:08]: But when we first started with David's Dream and Believe, it was a female event to raise money for women who were dealing with breast cancer. That's sort of the first ye idea. And then it just. Since it's grown so much. It's become more about patients with cancer, regardless of their. Their gender, their sex. But the concept worked really well in the beginning to marry it up with breast cancer being a female oriented surf contest.
Mike Ham [12:08 - 12:26]: Yeah, that's. Yeah. And it's really incredible just to kind of see like its evolution because now, I mean, like all these different vendors, there's food, there's Red Bull over there. There's, you know, the whole thing is just really cool to see, like it all kind of like put together and this is at this event and, you know, struck by it for sure.
Speaker E [12:26 - 12:28]: It falls right here in the middle of the summer.
Speaker D [12:28 - 12:28]: Yeah.
Speaker E [12:28 - 12:39]: I mean, there are. I know they have the, the clam jam. I believe that was the men's event. Sometimes I believe that's later in the year. But this falls right here. Everybody's here.
Speaker D [12:39 - 12:39]: Yep.
Speaker E [12:39 - 12:44]: People just love coming out, hearing the music. It's not every day you get to hang out on the beach with a band.
Mike Ham [12:44 - 12:45]: Right.
Speaker E [12:45 - 12:46]: With vendors.
Speaker C [12:47 - 12:52]: Absolutely. I sure. You sure can take two. Put one on your mom's car and.
Mike Ham [12:52 - 12:54]: Then you keep the other one. All right.
Speaker E [12:55 - 13:00]: That's a special day and as you can see, draws a huge crowd.
Speaker D [13:00 - 13:00]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [13:00 - 13:16]: I think it's cool too, that it's like just kind of. It's just like we're on the beach, just like part of it, you know, like people can come hang out, do their thing, watch the competition, participate. With all the stuff we have going on back here, it's just like integrating seamlessly into just normal life.
Speaker E [13:16 - 13:24]: Just came in from being out in the ocean and looking back, it's like, oh, where does it connect it? Everything is integrated.
Speaker D [13:24 - 13:24]: Yeah.
Speaker E [13:24 - 13:27]: There's been years before. It's not quite this perfect day.
Speaker C [13:27 - 13:28]: Yeah.
Speaker E [13:28 - 13:33]: And you can tell this is the contest and oh, there's the beach today. It's like it's all. Yeah, it's all together.
Speaker D [13:34 - 13:34]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [13:34 - 13:35]: That's really incredible.
Speaker C [13:35 - 13:37]: If people want to learn more about.
Mike Ham [13:37 - 13:42]: David's dream and believe, where would you want them to go? To learn more, to donate, to get involved, all that.
Speaker E [13:42 - 14:17]: Just Google ddbcf, ddbcf or David's Dream. David's Dream and believe. And find out more about the story about David's journey. Plenty of partners, we have a lot of partners that are providing services to patients that are dealing with whether it's mental health, whether it's physical health. But it's more than just a fundraising and helping financially. It's more of sort of a holistic approach to providing support to families that are dealing with it. So ddbcf.
Mike Ham [14:17 - 14:24]: Got it. Awesome. Well, thank you so much for. Well, first off, helping me this morning. Second off, for having me out. This has been like, we're, you know.
Speaker C [14:24 - 14:26]: Radio guard is a very happy to.
Mike Ham [14:26 - 14:36]: Be a part of this and, you know, partnered up with Jetty Rock. But obviously, like, that community and that ecosystem just starts to grow, and you just meet good people that are doing good stuff, and it's amazing.
Speaker C [14:36 - 14:36]: We love it.
Speaker E [14:36 - 14:46]: Well, we appreciate you. Appreciate you giving us some time here today and excited to see what you do with your organization and watch it grow.
Speaker D [14:47 - 14:47]: Yeah.
Speaker C [14:47 - 14:48]: Thank you so much.
Mike Ham [14:48 - 14:58]: I appreciate that. I were back with what may be our last guest, High Tide Oyster. Right. Did I get that right?
Speaker F [14:58 - 14:58]: Yes.
Mike Ham [14:58 - 15:01]: Nailed it. Remind me your names again.
Speaker F [15:01 - 15:03]: I'm Danielle and Isabel.
Mike Ham [15:03 - 15:07]: Let me turn your mic up, actually. Isabelle and Danielle.
Speaker C [15:07 - 15:09]: Danielle. There we go. All right.
Mike Ham [15:09 - 15:11]: So how's the day been going for you guys?
Speaker D [15:11 - 15:12]: Good.
Speaker G [15:12 - 15:13]: Amazing.
Speaker F [15:13 - 15:13]: It's been awesome.
Mike Ham [15:13 - 15:14]: Yeah.
Speaker G [15:14 - 15:25]: Turnout. This is our first coquina jam, and we're a newly formed company, and we're really enjoying being a part of the community and supporting other female surfers and just having some good vibes.
Mike Ham [15:25 - 15:28]: Yeah, this is my first one, too.
Speaker G [15:28 - 15:29]: Oh. How are you liking it?
Mike Ham [15:29 - 15:37]: Amazing. Like you said, like, this view is great. Like, we got the ocean, like I just said, I basically, like, I had a day at the beach, but I'm working.
Speaker F [15:37 - 15:42]: I know Danielle actually surfed in it last year, so now we're. Now we're working it, switching it up.
Mike Ham [15:42 - 15:43]: How'd you do last year?
Speaker G [15:43 - 15:45]: Not as good as me shucking oysters.
Mike Ham [15:45 - 15:52]: All right. Better at that. So let's learn about High Tide Oyster just so that people know when they're listening at home what you're all about.
Speaker F [15:52 - 16:12]: Yeah. So I started working on an oyster farm last summer, and so through that, I just started shucking, like, different events, like weddings. And then I got Danielle into it, and we decided it would be good to go off on our own and do private parties and different events that the collective we were working for just wasn't covering. So that's kind of how it started.
Mike Ham [16:13 - 16:14]: That's really cool.
Speaker G [16:14 - 16:24]: Yeah. We work really closely with the Farm Stowe, which is the Barnegat Oyster Collective. He's our main source for all shellfish. And it's just really amazing working with Matt and Scott and the entire team at the collective.
Speaker D [16:24 - 16:24]: Yeah.
Speaker G [16:24 - 16:46]: And, you know, it's really great starting such a small business and watching it grow from just the connected community of Long Beach Island. Everyone is so welcoming and just has been so Amazing to pop up at people's houses or any events that they have going on and shuck oysters and have a really great time. People love oysters, so we love giving them oysters.
Speaker D [16:46 - 16:46]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [16:47 - 16:59]: I mean, I wish we knew about you guys before. Like, we were getting married in October in Asbury park, and my fiance, Chrissy, booked a oyster shucker to, like, go around during cocktail hour and, you know, the thing and.
Speaker F [16:59 - 17:00]: Well, congratulations.
Speaker G [17:00 - 17:01]: Thank you.
Mike Ham [17:01 - 17:01]: Appreciate that.
Speaker C [17:01 - 17:02]: Thank you so much.
Speaker G [17:02 - 17:06]: Yeah, it's gonna be great. We were just at a wedding in Asbury. It was really beautiful. So I'm sure it's gonna be an amazing day for you guys.
Mike Ham [17:06 - 17:12]: Yeah, we're very excited. And we actually, for the podcast that I run, had Matt from Love Oyster.
Speaker B [17:13 - 17:13]: Oh, yeah.
Mike Ham [17:14 - 17:33]: And, like, he took me out on the boat, like, in the great bay by Atlantic City there. And, like, we went all around and we were pulling the. The whatever, like the. Not pots, but, like, the cages or whatever. It was so cool. I didn't realize, like, they start. It's literally, like, so tiny. Yeah. The seeds, it's so crazy. Then they, you know, grow up, basically.
Speaker F [17:33 - 17:39]: Yep. And it takes. It takes a long time to grow an oyster. It take, like, a year, depending on how big you want them. So it's definitely a process for sure.
Mike Ham [17:39 - 17:47]: And, like, I feel like I love the fact that you guys work so closely with the collective, because I do think people sleep on Jersey oysters a little bit.
Speaker G [17:48 - 17:49]: Absolutely.
Mike Ham [17:49 - 17:52]: You know, it's like Blue Points or Busts, you know, but it's Blue Points. Whatever.
Speaker G [17:53 - 18:04]: With the oyster collective, we have so many different farmers working with Matt and Scott, and they have such, like, different flavor profiles in each one, and they're not too far away from each other either. That's what's crazy about them.
Speaker D [18:04 - 18:04]: Yeah.
Mike Ham [18:04 - 18:27]: Well, we did. We went to an event at the collective, I guess now that's, like, two years ago. And just, like, knowing that, like, Matt from Love Oyster, like, his oysters are in the same bay, like, you could see it, like, where his thing is to where Matt's thing is. And they taste literally totally different, which is so crazy. But it just, you know. Science, man.
Speaker F [18:27 - 18:28]: Exactly.
Speaker G [18:28 - 18:29]: It's just the ocean. It's like a mystery.
Mike Ham [18:29 - 18:30]: Yeah.
Speaker G [18:30 - 18:30]: You know what you're gonna get.
Mike Ham [18:30 - 18:35]: I know. That's crazy. Who won the. Did somebody win the. The prize?
Speaker G [18:35 - 19:03]: Yeah. So we actually just gave the prize away to one of our Instagram followers at 2:00 clock right before we headed over to you. And they were super grateful for it. It's really happy. You know, Jetsam that we worked with with the knives and the rest of the giveaways, along with the BoC giveaway. It's really great what he's doing as well with his Oyster and Clam knives. He's giving back to the community and he's using oceanic plastics to create all of the Oyster knives.
Mike Ham [19:03 - 19:03]: Cool.
