What if I told you your next big breakthrough could happen in just five seconds? Sounds too simple, right? But sometimes that's exactly what we need. Today, I'm going to be diving into Mel Robbins, top motivational speaker across the world, and I'm going to be talking about her five-second rule, the simple yet powerful tool that has helped millions of people break through procrastination and fear, and we're going to be talking about how you could use it to level up your personal life, business life, professional life, whatever it is all around.

If you're new here, welcome to the More Than a Side Hustle podcast. My name is Anthony Hartzog. I am a seven-figure entrepreneur who has been able to build these businesses outside of his nine-to-five job, and now we help other people do the same. We've coached thousands of entrepreneurs, and our goal is to show you that it's not only just for successful people. Everyday people can build businesses outside of their jobs. So, whether you're just starting a side hustle, looking to scale, make sure you continue to tune in.

What exactly is the five second rule? So, essentially, it's about doing something with uninterrupted hesitation, according to Mel Robbins, so whenever you feel the urge to do something. So, whether it's waking up early, talking to your boss, having to make that phone call. You count backwards from five and then you take action. Now why do you do that? The purpose of it is because it forces us out of the everyday autopilot of our lives and it kind of puts you in that fight or flight mindset, right. So you do this before your brain can actually talk you out of it. One of your brain's primary functions is to help you out of feeling discomfort. Essentially, we're wired to protect ourselves from being uncomfortable. So with the five second rule actually removes all discomfort from that feeling. So let me give you an example with that. So when I actually want to record this episode of the podcast, normally what would happen is I would have a nice setup, I would put the three cameras up, I would do all these things and I would sit down, hit the record button. I said I am not going to wait. The five second rule said five, four, three, two, one, hit record, turn on the camera. I actually still have my do-rag on and I even realized it because I hit the five second rule and I took action. Guys. So that's an example of it and it may not be that for you. It may just be going on live. It may just be hitting record on YouTube. It may just be asking your boss for that promotion. I remember the first time I did that as well. It was like you know what I'm going to do this, and I ended up asking my boss for that promotion.

Let's talk about a few ways you could actually implement the five second rule today. Step number one I actually want you to identify the moments where you hesitate on taking an action. So I need you to pay attention when somebody asks you a question or there's something that you have to do, and you sit there and you freeze. Now it may not be as easy to remember that, but I want you to think about it. Maybe it's before a tough conversation, maybe it's before hitting post on Instagram or hitting subscribe on YouTube or something like that, but make sure you are identifying the moments where you pause. Step number two once you identify that moment, this is when the actual action takes place, right? So we're going to start by counting backwards from five. So now you are getting out of your head and you're starting to take motion, so you don't have to wait. Then, obviously, step number three is that action, that acting immediately. Do not wait, do not hesitate, get started today. So again, this could be picking up the phone call, booking that call, calling that client back asking for that review, whatever it is in your business. We are taking action after we get to the number one. That's step number three.

Speaker 0:

Again, the five-second rule is about building momentum and actually implementing these small steps can actually lead to big results. We talked about what we need to do to take action, but we need to understand why does this work? When you think about fight or flight, if you are about to get, let's say, someone's coming towards you, that fight or flight fear is going to tell you what the next steps are. Some towards you, that fight or flight fear is going to tell you what the next steps are. Some people may freeze. That is you not taking action. Some people are like I'm going to jump and spring out of that fear. If a dog is chasing you more than likely not you are not going to stand there and wait for that dog to bite you, right, you are probably going to run. So that is the example of your brain getting out that discomfort and taking action. So this is why this works.

Speaker 0:

So, as we wrap up this episode, I want you guys to think about what are some of the next steps that you need to take.

Speaker 0:

So I want you to think about what's one thing you've been hesitating on. It doesn't have to be the next big idea. It could be something small, it could be something as just picking up the phone and calling your family member or just going for that walk. I don't know exactly what you have going on, but for me, it was hitting record. That was literally the purpose of me doing this and taking action. So I challenge you to implement the five second rule today Five, four, three, two, one hit, subscribe and also tell me what was the thing you implemented under this video on YouTube or tag us on Instagram. That's an example of you utilizing a five second rule right after this episode and telling us exactly what you did whether you left a review, whether you left a comment, whether you tagged us on Instagram. You are taking action today by following that five-second rule and I promise you these small actions will lead to big results down the line. Action beats hesitation every time and you're one small action away from changing your life, guys.
