Dr. Gounder is an infectious diseases specialist, epidemiologist, journalist, and filmmaker. She is the host and producer of “In Sickness and in Health”, a podcast on health and social justice. Dr. Gounder has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Reuters, Sports Illustrated, and Bloomberg. She is a frequent expert guest on CNN, MSNBC, HLN, CBS, BBC, MTV, and Oprah. She is best known for her coverage of the Ebola, Zika and opioid abuse epidemics, and is currently making “Dying to Talk”, a documentary about the Ebola epidemic in Africa.

Dr. Gounder has studied TB and HIV extensively. While on faculty at Johns Hopkins, she was a Director for the Gates Foundation-funded Consortium. She later served as Assistant Commissioner and Director of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Gounder was elected as a member of President Biden’s COVID task force.

Dr. Gounder received her BA from Princeton University, her Masters from The Johns Hopkins University, and her MD from the University of Washington. She completed her residency at MGH and her fellowship at Johns Hopkins. She was elected a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in 2016.
