On this episode we slice our way through this slasher classic, Friday the 13th. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller this film, originally titled "Camp Blood", would go on to spawn 11 more films. SPEAKER_01I'm Shelly.
SPEAKER_04And I'm Matt. And we have got a new film this week. But as always, before we jump into that, you guys watch anything scary or anything scary happen to you guys. You want to talk about it.
SPEAKER_01I had something scary happening that every pet owner dreads and is terrified of.
SPEAKER_03Your dog took a shit in your house.
SPEAKER_01Close.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Because that's terrifying.
SPEAKER_01At about three o'clock this morning, I hear Oh yes. And I have never that sound shoots you up. Oh god. Oh god.
SPEAKER_02It does.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02Where's it at? Where's it at? Where are you gonna where are you gonna throw up at? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Thankfully, my dog sleeps in a she likes to sleep in a crate, and I do zip her in, so she's contained, because we have some other issues. But I did not make it. Let's just say three o'clock in the morning. I'm sitting there wiping up and starting laundry, which never moved to the dryer today, so it went on my part.
SPEAKER_04So do that when I get home.
SPEAKER_01But that's my scary thing.
SPEAKER_04That's the that's the worst. My dog, she'll you know, she'll have the heaves in the middle of the night, wake me up, and I'll be like, and I'll rush out, I'll get the door open, be like, all right, let's go, let's go, and like clap my you know, hands and my legs. And she just she'll just stand there scared. I'm like, it's okay, you're not in trouble. I need you to come outside so you don't throw up on the floor. But fortunately for us, we have those hardwood-styled floors, so we don't have to deal with carpet stuff.
SPEAKER_02But it's like it's that like you're like, it's not you're like, oh no, oh no, no, where's it at? Not not on the table, just not on yeah, not on the couch, not on the couch. Anything fabric, nothing fabric. Exactly, nothing fabric. Tile all day.
SPEAKER_01That noise.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh jeez.
SPEAKER_04All right.
SPEAKER_03I don't have any scary stories. Nothing happens to be a good one.
SPEAKER_04That is terrifying when you're woken up by your cat. That's super terrifying. Yeah, it's pretty terrifying. I agree. So I've I watched a scary movie, and I've been holding on to this, and I'm just I'm gonna, it's real quick, but it's been on my list forever, and I just wanted to throw it at you guys. So I finally watched Cannibal Holocaust. I don't know the show.
SPEAKER_01Well, yes, of course I have. I'm gonna assume that Matt hasn't.
SPEAKER_04I have no idea what you're talking about. Okay. So it's a little I believe it's on Shudder. It is on Shudder, and that's how I watched it. It's it's a movie that's just about like it's like a documentary found film style thing, but it's notorious because the director got pulled into court because they thought it was an actual snuff film.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_04It was found out when he got to court that no, the actors are still alive. This was just a film, so he was released. But the thing I didn't know about it was the animal kills.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Were real.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So I watched It's a turtle. There, so at the turtle scene, I made it to the turtle scene. Oh. And it was halfway through like dismembering it, and I was like, this is way too like crazy for a 1970s film. Yeah. And I and I looked online and I was like, oh, you gotta be kidding me. I'm watching I'm actually watching a turtle get murdered. Oh, it was terrible.
SPEAKER_01Italian director.
SPEAKER_04Yes, it was another Italian director. Just getting just getting yeah.
SPEAKER_01So the movie is severely pro problematic for uh several reasons. Jeez. Um and and they that's why it is a cult classic.
SPEAKER_04And that's true too. So we've discussed some films that have made the nasties list, but the like Cannibal Holocaust is the number one on a nasties list, which is for you or for yeah for I was like, I'd watch that over Henry anyway. Oh yeah, but then the nasties list was uh a list of films in the UK that were straight up banned. So that was like the number one film. But it's been on my list for a while because it's legendary. I was like, oh, it's really crazy. You know, this guy went to court for it, but I did not research enough to know about the real animal kills. Otherwise, as soon as I saw the first turtle, I would have been like, done. Fast forward. So I found out and I fast forward through the rest of the animal kills. Animals.
SPEAKER_03You're saying animals, like plural. Like there's several animals that are killed in this movie.
SPEAKER_01Like for real killed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's like uh Can we can we talk about that? Like really quick. I know you didn't want to spend a lot of time in it, but what other animals?
SPEAKER_04So there's there's like a muskrat or something in the beginning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, because you have to a short synopsis of the film is this uh it's about a documentary film crew that go out to try to convey the life of this tribe cannibal tribe that practice cannibalism. So uh you know, clearly they're hunting in the wild and so just imagine like those kind of animals.
SPEAKER_03That's pretty that's pretty terrible.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so there's like tarantulas, there's a snake that gets you know chopped up. We're yeah, we'll be talking about a chopped up snake here. Yes, we will, right? So I I say we start to get into our film Friday the 13th. What do you guys say? Yes, I think we should. Excellent. Let's move on. Let's move on indeed. Next segment is Dig Up the Bones. In this, uh, we just introduced the movie. Matt gives a quick little synopsis. We don't go into crazy detail. So, Matt, take it away. I knew you were gonna say that too. Take it away. Did you think I was gonna say take us on a journey? Because I keep saying that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's a good one, too. We'll use that.
SPEAKER_04No, I've said it enough.
SPEAKER_03No, it's good. All right, so yeah, this is Friday the 13th. It's a 1980s suspense horror film. So it's described as Camp Crystal Lake has been shuttered for over 20 years due to several vicious and unsolved murders. The camp's new owner and seven young counselors are readying the property for the reopening despite warnings of death cursed by local residents.
SPEAKER_04Say, say how you're saying it again?
SPEAKER_03What?
SPEAKER_04I don't know if I'm saying or okay. We'll find out later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean the actual. So there's an actual okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right, you bunch of nerds.
SPEAKER_01I mean, but it's it's developed, it's developed over time. It's like a lot of people say kill, kill, kill, die, die, die. Like there's interesting, but it come along with it.
SPEAKER_04And if you listen to the film, he he plays with it a little bit, but there's like there's a set thing that he said that it's set off of, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03I knew, I knew it. We'll get into a lot of that.
SPEAKER_04I knew it. So obviously, Shelly and I and Matt, you saw it too. So getting into it, we all kind of knew what we were getting into.
SPEAKER_01However, please, I turned it on, started watching it, and I've never seen it. Oh, really? I never watched the original 1980 Friday 13th. I've seen several Jason alliterations.
SPEAKER_04There's stories.
SPEAKER_01Jason X, Jason, Freddie versus Jason. I know who Jason is, and I and I knew the twist, obviously. I it's hard not to like not know it if you're into the horror. I have never sat down and watched it. That is awesome. That's awesome. So I'll tell you uh that's my first impression. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04You're just like, oh, this is something new. That's that's awesome. So I just watched like you know random little parts off TV. So this is you know, it was nice to sit down and actually like focus on it because it was you know, I watched it before lightheartedly, but for these, like I f I focus, I'm paying attention, and it was also odd too for me because initially all the other movies we've watched I've never seen ever before. So this was the first one that I already had a familiarity with, and I was like, oh well, it's I'm gonna have to take that fan hat off and like come objective. So I had to do that like mentally, and I hope I hope I did it successfully, but we'll find out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I I remember watching it like years and years ago as a little kid, and I and I remember the uh surprise or whatever you whatever you want to call it. The twist, sort of. Yeah, yeah. I remember that, and I was like, oh, this is pretty cool. Yes, but I also remember being like a little more terrified of watching it when I was a little kid. Watching it now, I'm like, yeah, it's it's yeah, it's a movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's and see I wasn't allowed to watch or as a kid. So that's probably why part of the reason.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, there you go. Yeah, you did talk about that. I just skipped over it. Yeah, yeah, I was ready. I was excited to watch it because, like I said, I watched it as a kid, and it's one of those movies where you're like, oh, it was a really good movie. Yeah. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's a good classic.
SPEAKER_04So let's move on. Let's all right. Next up, Feasting Fiends. And this we discuss the topics of the pros, the cons, our favorite lines, and then we do most enjoyable characters and then most annoying characters, and then we finish off Feasting Fiends with favorite kills slash scare. So I'm gonna say let's kick off the pros and Shelly, take it away.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so 1980, still pretty early. Um, we've probably we've had some like 50s, 60s, 70s horror movies out, and it's very emulate of a lot of the original horror. But I think Friday 13 did make a lot of it its own. You know, you heard a lot of music about like with Psycho, they kind of remind you of Psycho and Jaws. Oh, I just but I have to give it to um that's one of my pros, Henry Manfredini. Yes, um, very, very good job putting the music in when it was the most suspenseful, and I just really enjoyed the music overall. Sometimes I was like, uh, it's too much like psycho draws, but like I think he did make it his own regardless. Second pro, as we've discussed, I like practical effects. Tom Savini came in to do this makeup and I loved it. I loved it. Even you know, the cuts didn't bother me because it just was like it was good, the slash in the neck.
SPEAKER_00It was just yeah, so good. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then my last pro, it was just um being that it was the first time I really watched it, it was fun to see how they launched the franchise. And I thought they did a really good job starting the franchise. Now, did it get a little crazy when Jason went to space? Yes. Uh I'm not gonna deny that.
SPEAKER_04When you make you know double-digit movies, he's gotta end up at space eventually. Or New York or wherever you go. Exactly. He's gotta get out, he's gotta get out of Crystal Lake sometime. Right.
SPEAKER_01So I'm not gonna like pat him on the back for going that far, but to see where it all started, it was a good little backstory movie. It's a I would call it a prequel to what Jason was to come. So yeah, that those are my pros. Matt, what did you what did you think?
SPEAKER_03I am with you 100%. I said I love the storyline. I thought it was a great storyline. I like the scenes, just the the camp itself was really cool. Just using that nature as your background and stuff was really neat. And like you said, great beginning of this huge franchise. I thought what an awesome beginning. You know, it's not you're not introduced to this great monster, whatever. Yeah, you know, you know the origin of where it comes from. So it's I thought that was phenomenal. Very thought out for the time. Very thought out. Yeah, I thought it was phenomenal. So that's those are my pros. Those were those were it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, definitely. Well, Shelley, you are a soul sister of mine because the score music by Harry Manfredini, I think is how it says.
SPEAKER_01Manfredini? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I loved how he balanced out. And in my head too, I was thinking, like, it's a perfect combination of psycho and jaws, where you got the highlights. That's so funny that you thought that too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I heard that too.
SPEAKER_03So it's so funny. I'm just I'm gonna interrupt. It's so funny that you two right away, like, you pick up on the score and everything, like the music and all that. And I I mean, I love music too, but I'm I'm like You're in a band. Right. I'm like focused on like the story, but you're you're exactly right. Yeah. Where they put those, you know, crescendos and stuff where it's like, okay, something's gonna happen. Like, I didn't mean to walk on you, Derek, but yeah, that that's so funny that you guys really nail that stuff down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so love that. Obviously, Tom Savini is a legend with the special effects, practical effects. Yes, we shall all bow down, but amazing. All his work was fantastic. I thought the pacing was good. We kicked it off with a just long enough. Yeah. Yeah. Like we know what we signed up for. We watched we signed up to watch a bunch of kids get killed. Like, I like that we got a little bit, but we didn't get beat over the head with like their characters. It's like here's a little bit, but you know they're just gonna get murdered in the end.
SPEAKER_01But they didn't play Monopoly for 20 minutes of the movie, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean? Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, in that sweet spot.
SPEAKER_03You don't need to go all the way through the whole Monopoly. We got it. They're playing Strip Monopoly, cool.
SPEAKER_04All right, moving on. It was funny because that scene of uh them playing strip monopoly, which is odd how you would play that, but how they were sitting at the table all close to each other with their money, and then they're gonna eventually build out their you know all their properties, it made me very anxious because I was like, they're not giving each other space to have all their money out and have all their cards. It was like my Monopoly inner child is dying right now. Yeah. So uh, but uh one of my last pros was I thought the POV of the killer was done really well. You know, a lot of times there's too much movement, there was just enough movement, there was like lurking, and it was very obvious when it was the POV of the killer because it would either play the music from a distance and stuff too. Yeah, I thought I thought it was really, really, really well done. So those are my pros.
SPEAKER_01Awesome, Shelly, cons.
SPEAKER_04You want to keep it going with the cons?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm gonna piggyback because one of my cons are the camera shots.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01I understand what they were going for as far as like we don't want to show off who the killer is, although when they came to kill it a couple points, it was very obvious it wasn't anyone threatening. Um, because they'd be like, Oh no, um sorry, we were just like screwing around. Yeah, there's those kinds of things. They weren't freaking out instantly, and even even the counselor was like, Oh, what are you doing here? Yeah, yeah. You know, so it was very obvious that it was a you know, just a person. Nothing like it wasn't like they weren't a serial killer or anything like that. Um, so I didn't like the I I would want a wider lens. There were so many tight shots that sometimes I was like, oh god, made me sick. So I would like a wider lens and maybe see the killer a few times. Um the acting obviously is meh.
SPEAKER_04Um even Kevin Bacon was horrible.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, did she just get like a bunch? Uh it was bad. So, and then um I thought there was some character development in the film that wasn't needed as far as like crazy, what's his name? What do they call it? Oh, crazy Ralph.
SPEAKER_03Ralph, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like, why do we need to know his backstory? He's literally just the crazy guy. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. But he was so focused on. I mean, maybe I missed something as he continue on in Friday the 13th part two.
SPEAKER_04He's in two. Okay, but like he gets murdered in two like robot.
SPEAKER_01Literally, is in like they mentioned crazy Ralph in like every other scene. I'm like, why do we care about crazy Ralph?
SPEAKER_03Do you think that do you think that they were kind of focusing on him so that you'd think that it's Crazy Ralph going around killing people?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, they gave you little hints at like at one point they made you think maybe it was the owner. Maybe like they kind of like or the truck driver, you know, they kind of did like kept you guessing. I just thought there was a few characters that we focused a little, like the the waitress, the at the diner at the diner.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_01Why is she getting so much?
SPEAKER_04I think her name is Faye, but I I think I'm just calling all waitresses Faye at this point in my life. So sweetie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just take me out to dinner, huh?
SPEAKER_04It's kind of creepy.
SPEAKER_01So, yeah, that was my last con. It was just I felt like we focused on too many small bit characters to really care. But uh, you want to bounce into the back? I'll go ahead.
SPEAKER_03I don't really have too many cons because I I did enjoy it, and I know where you're coming from, like you said, Derek, trying to remove yourself as the fan, but I was like, I was kind of geeked out. I was like, oh, this is gonna be fucking sweet. I kind of was stuck in that world, so I didn't have too many cons. I had I didn't like the fact that they had, and maybe that was just uh, I don't know what that was, but they had two Jeeps. Oh, I thought I was like, I don't understand that. I'm like, so I know that what was his name? Uh uh. The counselor, Steve Christie.
SPEAKER_01Steve Christie.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say Steve, yeah. I know Steve had a Jeep, but they're both like almost if you sat them side by side, maybe they were. Steve Jeep. Right, I'm like, okay, so Steve's over here, who the hell has Steve's Jeep driving it around? I mean, it could have been like just a red truck or something. I mean, I know it's so minute to differentiate the what's that?
SPEAKER_01I thought again, it was the way to kind of think, make you think a certain way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's at the end, it kind of comes up again towards the front. We'll we'll get into that though.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Do not ruin it. We're only we're only 18 minutes in. The other the other con I had was how about Jack, played by Kevin Bacon, his crotch shot. What crotch? You mean his butt? No, his crot his butt is his crotch? No, but where was his crotch? When they were on the pad, the floating dock, and he's like, hey guys, we should go up. And he's like still he's speed-up. I don't know if he had like a like a cigarette light or something, but it was very weird. Go back and watch it. I don't want to be. I wasn't looking at that now.
SPEAKER_04I'm not gonna focus on Kevin Bacon's anatomy. I just thought it was weird.
SPEAKER_03Like it was a very it was like right in the dude's like it was a shot where Ned was on the on the ground with uh Alice, and he's they're like, all right, guys, we should probably go back to work, and they're like, Okay, and it pans up a little bit, and there's Kevin Bacon's sausage right there.
SPEAKER_01So and then uh I like how Matt's grasping like straws at college. He's like, yeah, the camera pointed at Kevin Bankins' crotch and I hate it.
SPEAKER_03I think that like emoji fingers came in and started pointing at it. The other thing, killing the snake. I didn't care for that. We talked a little bit about your your movie you watched, and then I said real or not real, but we'll get into that a little bit later, too. So those those were my cons. How about you, Derek?
SPEAKER_04So you're a soul brother now, because I also said the the snake kill.
SPEAKER_01Why did you guys hate them killing the snake? Because it was a snake.
SPEAKER_04Because it was real, because it's a real Did you Google it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it is. I did. Yeah, it goes. We want to do a fun thing.
SPEAKER_01How many how many snakes are in the world? Back then.
SPEAKER_03But snakes are good for good for lots of things, Shelly.
SPEAKER_04If if if I don't like snakes getting killed in Cannibal Holocaust, I don't like snakes getting killed and Friday the third.
SPEAKER_01Some people would appreciate the snakes.
SPEAKER_04If they would have ate it like the tribesmen and cannibal holocaust, they did eat it.
SPEAKER_01They were like, now I know what's for dinner.
SPEAKER_03They're a bunch of white kids from New Jersey. They're not gonna be able to get it. So, real quick, I'm just gonna jump in because we're talking about the snake. The snake, yes, it it it is, it was a real snake. The snake that got killed wasn't wasn't a snake that the crew found in the woods or anything. It was actually it's a pet of someone and an animal performer. Oh the person that owned the animal wasn't told that it would be killed. Tom Savinia also asked if he could borrow it. Oh, that's all he did. He just asked if he could borrow your pet snake. Oh, wow. And return it into three fucking pieces. Wow.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I've met Tom Savini in real life, and I I believe it a little bit. I was gonna say, I don't know I haven't met him.
SPEAKER_04I haven't met him.
SPEAKER_01He's a genius.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Don't get me wrong.
SPEAKER_03So how much I'm I'm curious, I wonder how much he paid that person for their snake. Who knows? What's what's the snake go for? But I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna assume the fact that he stayed on the camp for the whole shooting for free. He probably didn't pay a lot for that snake. I'm gonna assume.
SPEAKER_02But it wasn't his snake. But he didn't probably even pay for it. He borrowed it. Yeah, he said, Hey, can I borrow your snake for this meal? Oh, yeah, sure. You want Timmy the snake? Here you go. Here's Timmy. He's really good. What's his name? Timmy? Timmy the snake.
SPEAKER_03I'm I'm calling him Timmy. That's good. He's a dead snake now. He's like, hey, can I borrow your snake, friend? Yeah. I'll bring him back.
SPEAKER_04Maybe you'll bring him back in three pieces. And then so I'm gonna jump in with my final con because we kind of were talking about Tom Savini. So Tom did this fresh-off of uh Dawn of the Dead, which is notorious for the gore and the effects, the practical effects that he was able to do in that film. And it was unfortunate that not more of that was done. There was, and I understand it was like a low budget and they were shopping into majors, but I would have liked them to unleash and let Savini do what he does better a little bit more.
SPEAKER_01But don't kill real snakes.
SPEAKER_04Please don't. There was no gore there. There was no blood and guts.
SPEAKER_01If it's real, that was pretty gory, right?
SPEAKER_04That's a practical real effect murdering an animal. Oh, that's pretty real. Alright, so you guys ready to move on? Favorite lines? Let's do it. Let's do this. Shall I're up?
SPEAKER_01I grasped at straws.

SPEAKER_04I really This isn't like a movie with like lines and like gotcha moments, but go ahead. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's I mean, there's moments where we've been watching these movies and I'm like, ha ha. Yeah, it hits you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, there's a couple of those, but like, I don't know. I guess I was looking if I had to like really dig into one, you know, obviously Mama for he's Mrs. Forheys monologue. Yeah, that's I'm not gonna go into it because we're probably gonna discuss it.
SPEAKER_04We could do a whole episode on that, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right. But if I had to pick like one offline, Alice opens the door and looks out into the rain and goes, Jack and Jack and Marcy are gonna get. Drenched. And then uh I believe it was Bill. Bill, yes, goes, not if they are where I think they are. And that's all I had. We knew where they were. And we knew where they were.
SPEAKER_04So that's that's the line. What about you, Derek? I'm gonna shut the kicking together. Even though even though your con was uh Ralph, I loved that he was kind of like a Nostradamus like evil is coming. So I liked his line in the beginning. He said he just said, uh, you're going to Camp Blood, ain't ya? You never come back again. It's got the death curse. And I was like, oh, that's that's pretty good. Yeah. You're a joy. Yeah. I can't wait to leave with this weird dude in a in a please no my con wasn't specifically Ralph.
SPEAKER_01It was character development of B characters that we don't need to get to know.
SPEAKER_04He didn't he didn't need to pop up again in the uh camp. Doomed day. Yeah. All right, we saw him.
SPEAKER_03A message from God. God, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So, anyways, I liked I liked his line. What about you, Matt? So I have a couple, actually.
SPEAKER_03Oh my goodness. I know you've got to do that. Did you have to Google the lines? No, I didn't, but I I didn't have to, but did you get them from IMDB? No, I had to. What I had to do, because uh I always do my notes like the last of the minute sort of thing. Oh yeah. So I went back and I was like, oh yeah, I remember the hat line. That was pretty good. So I'll go through them real quick. I've got a couple. So I have where the camp counselor's in the opening scene, uh, Claudette says to Barry, the Do they give their names? They the only way I knew their name is because I I checked out the cast.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Was it was it in the credits? Because I saw when I was looking online, I was like, oh, I guess they had names, but I was like, they never addressed each other, they just undressed each other.
SPEAKER_03Word, boom, boom.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So Claudette says to Barry, You said we were special. Barry responds and said, I meant every word just to get into her pants. It's like, you know, classic line. Yeah. Um, and then we talked about the Monopoly scene where they're getting ready to do uh strip poker. Yeah. And Brenda says, I don't know why I find it funny, but I thought it was funny. SPEAKER_04It was what was the cop when the cop pulled up? Well, that was yeah. So he was like, You guys got any uh what did he say? Columbian gold, hash, whatever you said.
SPEAKER_03So so right there, I thought that guy was full of like quotes, but I didn't even write any of them down. But the one that you said, I thought it was pretty funny. And then um the snake scene that we talked about where Alice says, kill it, and Bill says, I can't get it until it comes out, and Alice replies, call it. Bill says, How do you call a snake? So I randomly not not not hilarious. I get this, but they were they were kind of silly. So, like you said, to your point though, there were a lot of like, but there wasn't like any crazy, like, you know, what it what it uh dialogue back then. Yeah, with the visitor where the girl says, Go fuck yourself. You know, nothing like that. But everything that um Officer Dwarf said, I thought was Officer Dwarf, yeah. There was a lot of like little funny little ones ones in there, but but yeah, not stellar, but they were okay.

SPEAKER_01Uh, I'll kick it off again. Okay, well, obviously, I did like our final girl, Alice.
SPEAKER_00Alice, yeah.
SPEAKER_01As far as you know, in the mix, she stood out. You could kind of tell there was something about her early on that you knew that maybe she would make it through. And then obviously, Mrs. Forhees. I mean, that uh I mean for a little bit that's not even in it till the end. Um, she does. I mean, there's some things that I hated about Mrs. Forhees, like the little killer.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Whatever the little voice is. Yeah, but other than that, those are my two favorites. What about you, Matt?
SPEAKER_03I thought the little bit of time that Officer Dwarf was in there, he just cracked it. Yeah, I thought he was funny because he was just like very strict, but very goofy. Like he just seemed like uh like a doofus. So yeah, so Officer Dwarf, I liked Alice, I thought she was good. Mrs. Vorrez, Pamela, her scream, I'm sorry. I'm new to this game. I know, but her scream, like that just cracked me up. And I like Brenda because I thought she was cute.
SPEAKER_04You liked Brenda?
SPEAKER_03I did. You thought she was cute. I thought she was cute. Awesome. I dig Brenda.
SPEAKER_04All right, so my most enjoyable characters, uh, Miss Voorhees, like everyone said, and then Crazy Ralph, like I just said a little bit ago. I just thought he was a cool little Nostradamus type character that you know something bad was gonna happen. I would have liked if he was just the beginning. It was a little too much later. But anyways, yeah, I enjoyed him a lot. So that's it. Why don't you keep going with your most annoying? Most annoying, uh, Steve Christie.
SPEAKER_01Same. I'm I'm just gonna piggyback. Okay, cool. Same. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He was supposed to be running the joint and he split and hung out at at the diner with Faye. I'm guessing her name. And just, you son of a bitch, responsibility, sir. What was he doing? He was he was supposed to go get supplies and try to make it back before it started raining, but I'm stop and grab a coffee.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but he's fucking off in a diner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we all agreed. Yeah, I was just like he lost a bunch of teenagers at a camp, like camp by themselves.
SPEAKER_03What did he call him? A bunch of uh Oh, Babes in the Woods. Babes in the Woods. Yeah. By every sense. What a creep, though, too, right? Yeah. So I I didn't like Steve, but I also had one more. I did not care for Ned.
SPEAKER_01Oh, he was my other one. Yeah, okay. I did not care for Ned.
SPEAKER_03I thought he I thought his character was just over the top. He would be the I'd be like, who the fuck invited this guy? Why is he here? He's so like, I want to beat the shit out of him. Just shut up, man. Just shut up.
SPEAKER_01And even worse, they didn't even give us a satisfaction to see him get killed. Right.
SPEAKER_03Because you hated him by that point, and you're like, yeah, he was like the second to be killed, too, right?
SPEAKER_01Nah, maybe not. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03We'd have to. Anyways, it doesn't matter. Yeah, I just I didn't like him because he was just annoying. Um, one of the scenes where they're talking about the lights going out in the kitchen, and she's like, Oh, the power must be out. And then Jack, Kevin Bacon's character, is like, oh, well, you know, Steve showed me how to how to use the generator, and Ned's like, uh, don't you love that macho emergency generator talk? I'm like, are you like, you're not even funny. You're just an ass. Yeah. Like the drowning shit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And then he shot an arrow at someone. What the hell is that?
SPEAKER_03Your girlfriend, you almost fuck stupid Ned. What they called him Neti. Yeah, they called him Neti at one point. But yeah, I was like, I just didn't care for him. We could have dithouse his character, too.
SPEAKER_04If he was just he if we would just scale back, I know he's supposed to be like the comic relief and the funny guy, but it was just pull off, and he was just more annoying than funny.
SPEAKER_03Comes out with a with an Indian headdress and starts joking. That was actually funny. You thought that I thought that was a good one.
SPEAKER_01I thought it was very culturally inappropriate.
SPEAKER_03Well, sure, we're gonna find a little bit more.
SPEAKER_04Maybe not in the 80s, but I I love that the uh officer Paul pulled up after he was making an ass of himself. Slow down Tonto or whatever. Yeah, and it was just egg on his face, and he was like, oh fuck. So I thought that was a funny scene. But anyways, sorry.
SPEAKER_03Going on a lot about Ned here, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Did you have any other characters you didn't like, Derek? You know the uh the guy that gives so the the girl in the beginning, Annie, who gets hitched to the uh camp.
SPEAKER_01You mean the truck driver guy? Yeah, the truck driver that she met with his insanely large steering steering wheel.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's how they made him back then, baby. He had predator vibes.
SPEAKER_03He was just like I caught that too. Yeah, I even wrote down I'm like very rapey vibe going on right now. Uh but it turns out he was actually an okay guy.
SPEAKER_04He was just like that's very weird. But he was weird though, because he also he was talking shit on Crazy Ralph, saying, you know, don't listen to him, he's crazy. But then like five minutes down the road, he's like, you need to quit, and and you need to not go over there. Right?
SPEAKER_03But I I you know when he helped her in the truck, he was like grab her butt and like he said to her too, he's like, uh, so are all the counselors down there as beautiful as you're like, dude, aren't you like 60? Just settle down. She's like slow down in us maybe 20. I thought something was gonna happen in the truck. I'm like, oh, this is not gonna be good. Oh boy. I just caught that weird vibe. But anyways, but he yeah, he spared us weird things.
SPEAKER_04Thank you, guys. We have not been spared in previous movies. Nope. Alright, so did did everyone get their annoying characters out? Yep, yeah. Awesome. So we are moving on to, and there's a lot of them. Favorite kills slash scares, Shelly.
SPEAKER_01My favorite one, let me paint a picture. Marcy and Jack just did the deed. And Marcy has to go to the bathroom, as a lot of people after they've done the deed.
SPEAKER_04That's just good hygiene. It is.
SPEAKER_01And the whole scene of Marcy in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet, and someone walks slowly by, and then she hears something, and just the whole setup of it, it's that anticipation. They add in that music, and it goes on to almost psycho-esque. She opens a shower curtain to see nothing behind it, closes it, and behind her you just see the shadow of the axe that then gently hits the light, then sways it around, and then Marcy gets an axe to the base. And I loved it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I thought that I that was one of my favorite scenes too.
SPEAKER_01Everything about it, yeah. The makeup, the music, the even the camera in that particular scene. So I really wanted my favorite kill to be, I believe, was it Brenda or Anne? And he hears the voice. Help me. And she ends up with the bigger. Oh, that's Brenda.
SPEAKER_04Oh, she goes out to the archery range.
SPEAKER_03The archery range. Yes, my girl.
SPEAKER_01Why didn't we see someone get like an arrow to the face?
SPEAKER_03That's she stood right back, right next to the door.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, oh, they're gonna be set it up. And then they never show us how she got killed.
SPEAKER_04And that's why I had beef with them not using Savini so much because he would have he would have knocked that out of the park. Yeah, they were setting it up to do that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was like, oh, she's gonna get she's gonna die with it. So I thought that was a big missed opportunity.
SPEAKER_03She was right at the target. I'm like, yeah, she's gonna be right there, and then Arrow come flying in.
SPEAKER_04But Derek, do you want to do your favorite kill? Well, I just got a list of all Matt, why don't you I don't want to take anyone, so Matt, go ahead.
SPEAKER_03No, it's fine. Okay. Um, so yeah, mine was it was Marcy with the axe. Oh, you did like Marcy with the axe. So I did like that, but yeah, that was great. Even prior to that, I thought Anna's throat slash was awesome. Yeah, the I just the very first one where it like he slashes it, but not immediately. It's like almost like a slow, like like a slash would actually do. Like it cut and then it just coming out. So that was mine.
SPEAKER_04Oh, was that your only kill then? Yeah. Okay. All right, Derek, yeah, favorite kill? So um when Jack got the arrow through his neck, the stabbed up through the blood effect, and it like squirted up. So I I I watched On Shudder is a documentary, I think it's called uh Camp Crystal Lake Memories. It's a six-hour documentary because it goes through all the films. So I watched it, and Tom Savini was saying for that scene they had like a pump, like a hand pump, and the you know, the blood was in the tube, and then when the arrow went through, they were supposed to hit it, but there was a malfunction, and his assistant quick and grabbed it because the uh pump came disconnected, and his assistant quick and grabbed the hose and blew into it, and that's why you got the effect of the blood shooting up. Yeah, so I love that scene anyway, but when I got that little tidbit, I was like, oh, that's awesome. Yeah, I love when things fall apart, but it ends up better than it was supposed to be.
SPEAKER_01Very cool how Kevin Bacon Jack was still like mobile and active for that kill. Like his face was uh Yeah, it was good. That was definitely good.
SPEAKER_04How they did that was amazing. So that was that was my favorite kill. All right. That brings us to Final Cut. And this is where I just reveal the shocking ending of the film, and we discuss and give our ratings of one to five stabs, one stab, atrocious, no redeeming value, waste of time, two stabs, bad, forgettable, poorly done, three stabs, mixed feelings, mediocre, okay, four stabs, good, interesting, enjoyable, or five stabs, masterpiece, excellent, perfect.
SPEAKER_01If you don't want to spoil the ending or have this inkling to still watch Friday the 13th, even in your older age, fast forward.
SPEAKER_04Thank you, Shell. Go ahead. Alright, so worried by their friend's disappearance, Alice and Bill leave the main cabin to investigate and find an axe in Brenda's bed. With the phone line cut and Ned's truck inoperable, Bill and Alice decide to get out of the rain and head back to the cabin. At this time, Steve Christie finally makes his way back to the campground just in time to get murdered because he's a fucking jerk. Our killer makes her way to the generator shack and cuts off the power, prompting Bill to leave Alice in the cabin to rest while he checks on the uh shack. Eventually, Alice heads out to look for him after she's done with her nap because you know this is a horror film, people take naps. Uh, she finds his body pinned with arrows to the generator door, and horrified, she flees back to the main cabin to hide, only to be traumatized further when Brenda's body is thrown through the window. How scary. Your friend's body goes flying through the window. So soon after, Alice sees a vehicle pull up and rushes outside thinking it's Steve because it was a jeep. Which goes to you we're wondering why there's two jeeps.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So Steve drove a Jeep and then the killer drove a jeep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Moving on. So instead, she is greeted by Miss Voorhees, a middle-aged woman, said she is an old friend of the Christie's, and Alice starts freaking out that everyone is dead, and Miss Voorhees comforts her and persuades Alice to go back inside the cabin. Upon seeing Brenda's body, Miss Forhees starts lamenting the fact that Steve was trying to even open the place back up. Then she reveals that her son Jason was a young boy who drowned in 1957, blaming his death on the counselors who were supposed to be watching him but were having sex instead. So revealing herself to be the killer and that today is Jason's birthday, she attacks Alice but is knocked unconscious. Spurred on by her psychotic flashbacks and her schizophrenic back and forth conversations with her dead son, Miss Voorhees continues to hunt down Alice, and they battle a few more times, and Alice continues to run away. Miss Voorhees finally tracks down Alice at the shore and attacks her with a machete. Alice eventually gains the upper hand and grabs a machete and decapitates Miss Voorhees. Exhausted, Alice boards and falls asleep inside a canoe which floats out to Crystal Lake. Out of nowhere, Jason's decomposing body jumps out of the water and drags her into the lake. She awakens in a hospital surrounded by police sergeant and medical staff who are attending to her. When Alice asks about Jason, the sergeant said that if there is no boy, she said, Then he's still out there. As a lake is shown with ripples and air bubbles in the water. And the reason we have twelve more of these films. So the twist was amazing. So that scene where Alice runs outside and it's not it's not Steve, but it's oh, it's just some middle-aged woman, you know, like, oh good, we're safe. It's it's not the killer, obviously. It's like, nope. Yeah. So I thought I thought it was awesome. How did you guys feel?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, also uh Jason jumping out of the lake still scared me, even though I knew it was a great jump scare. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That was actually that was one of my favorite scares, but obviously don't want to remember yet.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but yeah, that scene was just awesome because you think, oh, it's the end of the movie. There's you know, she's in the canoe, and then there's police over there saying, Hey, you know, waving her, and then she's like, Oh, she's got like this smile on her face, relieved look on her face and everything. And then all of a sudden, just boom, out of the water, duh, and then just right into it. That was like, holy shit, yeah. But um, for me, yeah, I love the build-up just to you know where this where this whole empire comes from with Jason's mom and stuff. Like you said, you think she's just oh, she's just a person there and everything. She's a friend of the Christies. She's just a friend of the Christies. No, then she starts going like mental right there in front of Alice and everything. So I thought I thought it was good. I I liked it. I enjoyed the ending. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We gotta give it stabs.

SPEAKER_01Uh, I'm giving it four. Yes. Four stabs. Solid four solid four.

SPEAKER_03The beginning of a huge franchise and great horror movie, four stabs.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I was close to giving it a five, but the fact that I didn't get as much gore as I wanted, yeah. I was like, it's it's it's a four. So I think this is the first time we've all gave it the same rating. Yeah, that's amazing. Yes. So good job, Friday the 13th. Yes. I think now is the time we move on to voices from beyond. SPEAKER_01We've got uh Jamie F uh sent us some feedback. Nice. Um he went goes on to say teenagers who have sex always die. It's not really fair uh to critique a movie made in 1980 to today's movies, but as a kid, they remember being freaked out watching this movie. Not so much now, just like Matt. Uh, they love the fight scene at the end. It was like watching toddlers fight. Um still the I love her scream. The kill scenes were ahead of the time, and lots of shock and gore, and the and jump scare was pretty epic with the audience um set the audience up nicely with its score. Uh overall, pretty nostalgic and entertaining, although a bit uh mockery through mockery. Bonus lesson he told his son that everyone who has sex before marriage gets murdered.
SPEAKER_04So and then he the warning young one. Yes.
SPEAKER_01His wife, Piggy Baft, uh Jennifer F to say um they were all a little mortified when they killed the snake.
SPEAKER_04Oh they looked it up too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, poor snake, call them a bunch of meanies. Um, we got our old faithful Lisa Came on it. Although plot holes and things don't make sense, they like how a small framed woman could pick up people and kill them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um pin them up against a door somehow, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But this is a classic. Her brothers introduced her to this film. She said that it's really nice to watch in 4K Blu-ray. Um, good twists. Uh, she did wish that future writers and directors would have watched and had an idea of the storyline before developing this many sequels. Uh this will be forever, her top horror movie. She gives it four out of five stabs.

SPEAKER_01Yep. Um, and she liked Kevin's uh Bacon's death the best.

SPEAKER_01It was a suspenseful and had all the horror movie classes, uh such as checking the generator alone and checking the noise in the shower alone, those parts where you want them to be taking the buddy system. Um they are she was glad to see one sensible female character wearing an actual long sleeve nightgown instead of running around in her underwear and raincoat. Um she loved the she actually liked Ralph The Town Crazy.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And um she never watched the movie when she was younger, so she was surprised by the ending. And she enjoyed it, overall enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_03She's a joy to watch movies with, by the way. Oh, you know this lady? I do know this lady, but it's so fun to watch because she's one that like likes to engage with the TV as things. She's like, why is she doing that? What is it? What are they doing? Why are they I'm like, it's just it's fun, and I'm not being sarcastic at all. I actually do enjoy it. So sorry, Shelly. Oh no, you're fine.

SPEAKER_01This is one of the first movies he remembers watching as a kid, and he found it humorous as an adult. His favorite character is the girl who made it out alive.

But my favorite her favorite line was you dumb kids, just a bunch of dumb kids from drivers. Yeah, okay. Uh he liked the cop on the motorcycle. Um he said you can't keep the chief waiting.

SPEAKER_01Um he thought the kids' fake drowning was dumb. Oh, two jumped in and two took the canoe out to find out. Uh okay.

SPEAKER_01Um the fifth girl only had to throw the ring out three feet to what reach the guy. Oh, he's basically saying that's four people went in a canoe when one person could have just thrown a ring in the room.

SPEAKER_01That's fair, but all right. And uh he gave it three and a half stabs and said if you like horror movies, you have to see it. So that's our those are our voices from beyond things, everybody. Keep them coming.
