SPEAKER_00I'm Shelly.
SPEAKER_03I'm Matt. And we are Little Bracket of Horrors. And this week, we're getting into the 1978 classic Phantasm. Isn't it 79? Yes. Did I say 78? Yes, it's 79. We blew it already. Put it together. Good Lord. 1979. But anyways, uh before we jump into perfection. Exactly. Before we jump into all of that, anything scary happen to you guys, or you guys watch anything scary, Matt? Anything?
SPEAKER_01Uh I I watched uh I had two scary things happen.
SPEAKER_03Oh, two.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if I should mention this, but I don't really give a shit. I got a vasectomy. That was fun. Yeah. Very, very scary.
SPEAKER_03And so did I.
SPEAKER_01And you were a lying son of a bitch because it was painful.
SPEAKER_03It wasn't that bad.
SPEAKER_01It was pain for me.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yes. But uh, but anyways, uh, I watched uh World War Z.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. With Brad Pitt.
SPEAKER_01Bradley Pitt. Yeah. Yeah. I like that movie. I thought it was pretty good. I liked it.
SPEAKER_00Arguably not zombies, but zombies kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03I think I I think I saw that in the theaters, but that was the uh ultra fast ones that were.
SPEAKER_00I despised the zombies in that movie. Wasn't it? Yeah, it wasn't. Wasn't that a book? It's not a zombie if it's running faster than I walk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, traditionally you're you're looking at the stuff.
SPEAKER_00Just like 28 days later.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say, wasn't that? Yeah, yeah. They're faster.
SPEAKER_00And I but I would say they're more like just diseased infected. Yeah, that's rage zombies, maybe is a bit category for them.
SPEAKER_01Yes. In World War Z, they didn't actually eat anybody, they just bit them. I can't remember.
SPEAKER_03I only watched that movie once in place forever since. But anyway, anyways, yeah. But that's cool. Uh I watched uh Intruder, which is Hulu or Shudder? I watched that on actually on Tubi. I watched uh Intruder, but 1980 film, but it's it's about a grocery store that gets attacked by a serial killer. And uh Sam Raimi plays like a butcher in it. And Ted Ted Raimi's in it as well. He's like a little bagger boy in the back.
SPEAKER_00But did he get his lines out?
SPEAKER_03He had like he had like two lines, but he got him out. But that was a cool film. If anyone wants to check out like an like a campy slasher flick, I would tell I would totally check out Intruder.
SPEAKER_00I just imagine Ted Slight.
SPEAKER_01I've never seen I don't know who he is.
SPEAKER_00Ted Ramey's mainly a director, but um him and his brother Sam talk very similar, and the they kind of uh say things under their breath and pause a lot, and it's interesting. It is interesting. Yeah, that is the word for it. Interesting.
SPEAKER_03Alright, you guys ready to get into it? Yep. Let's do it. Alright, so our first segment is Dig Up the Bones. And in that Matt's just gonna give us a brief synopsis on the film of Phantasm. Matt, take it away.
SPEAKER_01So uh the residents of a small town have begun dying under strange circumstances, leading young Mike to investigate after discovering that the town's mortician, only known as the tall man, is killing and reanimating the dead as mishappened zombies. Mike seeks help from his older brother Jody and their friend Reggie, a local ice cream man, working together. They try to lure out and destroy the tall man, all the while avoiding the minions and their deadly silver spear.
SPEAKER_03I was so excited when Will landed on this because I've been wanting to watch it for a while, so now was a reason. And uh we're gonna get into all that. Were you guys excited to land on Phantasm? How'd you feel?
SPEAKER_00Uh, I mean, at first I was because my dad hyped this movie up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Steve, Steve loves this film.
SPEAKER_00I'm not gonna lie. Well, we'll get into it later, but he emailed me his thoughts.
SPEAKER_03Oh, boy. Oh, I can't wait.
SPEAKER_00You know, like this could have been an email or like this meeting could have it wasn't. Because he kept talking to me on the because I called him immediately afterward and I said, Dad, that's one of your all-time favorite horror movies. I need answers.
SPEAKER_03Yes. But funny.
SPEAKER_00He kept trying to talk to me, and I was like, no, just send me your thoughts. Send me your thoughts. But he emailed me his thoughts. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So he didn't write you a letter and mail it. Right.
SPEAKER_00Carrier pigeon. Cool. One stamp or two.

SPEAKER_03I I lost track, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was a little excited only from watching the trailer. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Was it because we were excited at first?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I was like, okay, this has got to be pretty good. Like we said, we'll get in more into it, but I could almost see how it's sort of a cult following movie. Um, I was excited about the the tall man, so so yeah, I was kind of excited. I was ready to, I was ready to give it a whirl.
SPEAKER_03Next up, Feasting Feast In this we discussed the topics of overall pros of the movie, cons of the movie, favorite lines, most enjoyable character, most annoying character, and then finish it off with our favorite kills slash scares. So, Shelly, give us your pros.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um, so I mean I I do have to give the score a nod. That's one of my pros. Although I feel like they let it fade into the background a lot. You had to really listen for it, but it it had good potential. The funeral home is one of the main sceneries. It's really cool for a movie. I can't say that we've seen it too much in horror where they are at a funeral home, a moratory type place, cemetery. Most of the scenes are in that arena, so that was very cool to me. And I think there was also some mystery of who's the tall man had already gotten to at some point. Like the blonde girl showed up and went there. Was she possessed by the tall man of that?
SPEAKER_03I I took that as like a shape shifting that he was doing too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I really don't understand a lot. Um so my last one that I had was after my second viewing, very begrudgingly watching it. Oh, a second time. Burrudgingly, it's a great one. I noticed that there was some foreshadowing with Reggie and the pitchfork while he's playing his guitar. That he very precisely took his two fingers and touched the end of the pitchfork since I had already seen the ending. It clicked at that point. It popped back out, yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_00So the foreshadowing of the pitchfork was cool. Great job.
SPEAKER_03Thumbs up, guys. Good job on foreshadowing.
SPEAKER_00And that's all I've got.
SPEAKER_03That's Shelly's pros.
SPEAKER_01So the the one thing that really stood out for me was just the eeriness of the whole surrounding. It was just very eerie, like you know, like 1970s, 80s, hanging out in a cemetery. Like, just you know that crazy shit's gonna happen. So but I kind of dug that. I like that. I like that scene, I like the the tombstones and all that kind of stuff. And and like Shelly said, it was it was interesting, the mortuary and everything, you know. This, you know, that was primarily where this where this movie took place. I thought that uh that was probably my favorite part, was just the scenery, just the eeriness of it. I know there's more phantasms out there. There's five in total, including the original, but yeah, there's five in total, yeah. So it kind of got me excited to see the other ones, which I will be doing, believe me. So good luck. Yeah, good luck. Have fun with that, right? Have fun. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I started going down the rabbit hole of watching I watched the second one. Oh, so you did? Okay. I started to, I come like halfway through the third one. But no, I was looking for I'm gonna you know show my cards a little bit here, but I was looking for answers with the second, and uh, there was just more questions. So if you're looking if you're looking for answers, don't worry about it. There's just there's other elements that come in, you're like, what's going on now? Like things like that. I don't know if I'm looking for answers. Okay, well great. So maybe it'll be good. So I'm gonna jump onto my pros. So pros, I I thought it was extremely entertaining between between the crazy concept acting and some of the bonker scenes, I found it was just fun, even the bad parts. I thought there was some well done camera work, uh, the one shot, and they only did it once, but when the I'm I call it the murder ball, when the bur murder ball was going through the uh mortuary, it cut to like a black and red tinted scene where it was like the POV of the murder ball. Oh yeah. And I thought that was really cool. They should have done that more, but I I enjoyed that a lot. And then I also you guys talked about it uh for your pros, but the the set design, just the the uh funeral home and the the mortuary, just it looked grand and looked awesome. So those are my pros. Noise. Moving on into calm.
SPEAKER_00I want to kick it off with Matt.
SPEAKER_01Oh, let's do it. Matt. Yeah, so so for my cons, one of one of the this wasn't like a huge con, but you know, you watch these movies and you're just like, why didn't they do that? Like, why are they what why are the why are you wasting your time doing that when you could be doing this? So the one scene where where Jody locks his brother in the room, you know, and he's trying, you know, he's leaving and he's gonna be able to get it. Yeah, he's going to the uh mortuary to investigate and and take out the tall man. And he shoves his brother in the room and he takes the the screwdriver and smacks it into the door. Understand that. Okay, okay, okay, whatever. Mike can't get out of the room. So he's sitting there at his desk, he's all frustrated, you know, swearing at his brother, and he has a hammer and one shotgun shell, and he's you know, MacGyver's this little I said the same thing shotgun.
SPEAKER_03I could call it a McGyver, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right. So he McGyver's his shotgun, okay, and and he goes over. I know what he's doing, okay. But I'm like, you have a fucking hammer. Why would you just not beat the doorknob off of the thing? Like, yeah, and then and then on top of that, the effect for the shotgun blast was just like it was super silly.
SPEAKER_03It was silly. Get used to it. Uh oh yeah. Characters in horror films do not make the most sound decisions. Right, right. Otherwise, these films would be like five minutes long.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Did you have any other cons?
SPEAKER_01So I did see uh I said the acting was just, you know, your rough, typical 1970s, 80s horror movie acting, not stellar, you know, was uh I think even the girl when he went to go see the girl with her grandmother where where he was uh she was reading his uh I guess they're reading his hand that I don't know in that box. I think that was just to overcome the fear. Yeah, they they talked about it. But anyways, the girl, the young girl, like just the dry responses to everything was just it's like, okay, we could have probably had somebody else do it. But what whatever. 70s, 80s, you know, shitty acting. So that those were my cons.
SPEAKER_03What about the scene? Uh, I think when Mike is underneath the car, uh he was working on the car. Oh, yes. He thought those little things were after him, and then he got stuck under the car. Which the car was lifted. Yeah. And it had big ass tires on it, and somehow he just Mike took the hammer and bonked Jody on the uh foot, and it was the worst scream I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't just the scream, it was the delay. Yes, it was like bonk, and then like it cut away and then went on his face and he was like, Oh that's my perfect. That was pretty good. Uh perfect. Uh it was a big scream because and then he was like, You hit me.
SPEAKER_01But I think so, yeah, just with the acting, I think Reggie, the ice cream guy, you can see why he continued in the series because out of all the acting, he was probably wasn't a stellar actor. Again, he was probably the best out of all of them.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so for my cons, a little bit to what uh Shelly said, but the editing was way too erratic. Some of the cutscenes lost me and like didn't flow. And I guess the film was originally like three hours long, right? But after the first test screening, they had to cut it back to that hour 29. So I get it. But uh a little bit to what you said, Matt, but I said characters were not the most believable in the decisions that they made. And I just kind of brought up all right, so Mike is working on his car, he feels like there's things running around, so instead of getting out of the garage, he rolls underneath the car that is jacked up. Yeah, and it's had a high tendency to, you know, fall off the jacks and fall on him. I was like, what do you how do you think that's the best move? I I I get it, you're like a 15-year-old kid, but that made no no sense at all. So yeah, I I guess uh, you know, the believability of the characters was just a little off. Those were my cons. How about you, Shelly?
SPEAKER_00All right, buckle up.
SPEAKER_01Wow, man. I'm looking at her, I'm looking at her notes and I see like a four-paragraph essay there. Let's go through it, Dice.
SPEAKER_00Uh the plot, overall story, uh-huh. Complete disconnection. I don't care if you're setting up a franchise. There was no story. There was really no connective plot that I could follow that I could understand. That I was like, oh my god, like you have to get sure. I don't even understand why they found interest in this tall guy besides that he could lift a casket by himself. Maybe he's just real strong. And that's your one suspicion that you're going off of because he listed he lifted a casket by oh okay. Anyways, um yeah, so I just said there was no substance to explain why the funeral director was doing what he was doing. I just don't understand. The protagonist and antagonist relationship between the brothers was forced.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I agree.
SPEAKER_00There was no chemistry between those actors.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_00And they were supposed to be the two that we were rooting for. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There were so many scenes between those two where you're just like, this is so weird. Like uh the one after Mike gets attacked and he comes back to the house and he's he's a finger.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and he's uh weird, I guess I believe you know.
SPEAKER_03He's like, oh geez. Very weird, but go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Uh the tall man had the ability to be a really good killer. We're talking Jason, Freddie.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And then he killed like one guy.
SPEAKER_01Super creepy dude.
SPEAKER_00But I think there's so much potential to be like among the monsters of horror, and I just didn't see it. Uh, I said instead he just sent these off-market jawas to do all of the killings.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's what they were. So did you read a little bit of the facts on that?
SPEAKER_00I I yeah. Well, I didn't have to read any facts. My dad gave me all the facts.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_01You got them on day one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, those ja those those little characters were were before Star Wars BTW.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But after Star Wars. The books existed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_00Anyways, off-market jawas is what I'm sticking with.
SPEAKER_03Off-market jaw was.
SPEAKER_00And then I didn't understand why the blood was yellow.
SPEAKER_03With uh with the tall man when he got his fingers chopped. Yeah, there that was never really.
SPEAKER_00Well, even when the one guy got killed with a spear yellow, which I looked like P.
SPEAKER_03It was. It was P. So after the buttons. That's what I was thinking. So the little the little the the full-size minion for the tall guy. When the spear hits his head and it it shots, it shoots all the blood out of his head.
SPEAKER_00Was he a full-size minion or just a I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I'm just guessing.
SPEAKER_00That's what they're calling him. Because who was that guy? I called him the groundskeeper.
SPEAKER_03He was yeah, he was a caretaker. That's all he was. He was a caretaker. I just called him a full-size. He just showed up and chased after the kid. Yeah, that was the only time we saw him. I wonder why. Well, they had to cut down from three hours to make this movie work. Yeah, right. Because no one wanted to sit through three hours of it. Thank God. But in that scene, that was actually, it was supposed to be urine when the guy falls down and on his legs runs out. So I was right. Yeah, it was urine. So it was pee. It was pee pee. But the reason they were able, because originally they were nervous they were going to get an X rating because I guess that scene, but the fact that it didn't show up in the original film, like in our high def, you know, films we catch that, but in the original film, they couldn't, they just they couldn't see it at all, so they they didn't know that that guy was peeing himself, so they got the R rating instead of X. Interesting. It it helped out uh the director. Interesting.
SPEAKER_00Little do you know nowadays that P is not an X radiator. It's very it's a very 4K fluid.
SPEAKER_03You gotta get those 4K uh TVs to catch it.
SPEAKER_01I'm with you though, Shelly, on on what you're talking about there, because you have no idea watching the movie for the first time, you have no idea who these fucking people are. Yeah, you're just doing it. So what's with the yellow stuff? So yeah, as you read a little bit about it, you under you you see, oh well, they're from they're like aliens, but yeah, nothing is described. Right, right. Nothing's described or anything.
SPEAKER_03Zero backstory, you're just thrown in the middle of this weird town. And I want to inside more too. Right.
SPEAKER_00And I don't want to get intoo much because it's gonna we're gonna discuss it at the ending, but it's just like even when they're like, oh, look, you're kind of left with, but why still?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right. No dots are connected. Like this is like a connect the dot notebook, but none of the dots are connected, it's just random little parts, and you're it's nothing's like lining up.
SPEAKER_00You can have a first movie to a franchise that doesn't have a lot, yeah, but still gives you the plot and why we're here. Friday the 13th. The mom shows up the best and tells us why we're doing what we're doing. Right. There's backstory. Understand why we're killing. Right. Couldn't tell you still.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're making you're making me change my rating. Oh yeah. No, because you're making valid points. But even but so you're absolutely right.
SPEAKER_03But even that even what I said, like, even with all this like plot hole stuff and stuff that didn't connect, like some of the stuff I just love so much that it made me like this film. But we'll we'll we'll get into all that.
SPEAKER_00So that you we just went over pros and cons.
SPEAKER_03I know, and I just and I said why I liked the film.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was three things.
SPEAKER_03I I said that.
SPEAKER_00No, that was it. I'm gonna go. Damn it. I wanted to hear more.
SPEAKER_03I wanted to hear more. So let's move on to favorite lines. Anyone want to jump, Shelley? You want to take favorite lines? You got any? Any at all?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, I guess, and it was in the trailer where he uh the tall man steps out and it's supposed to be a scare, I guess. The funeral's about to begin, sir.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I th I love that line. Uh I thought he delivered that. I I enjoyed him, but I love that line.
SPEAKER_00It's a well maybe two or three lines. I've been waiting for you again.
SPEAKER_02And then I put down we know what Shelly gave this one. I can't wait.
SPEAKER_00I put down Yeah, it was the for I did like the line when the fortune teller told him to stick the hand in the box, and at the end the granddaughter says it's a simple reflection, fear is the real killer. Yeah. So I thought that was poignant.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. There was some foreshadowing.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, I mean, you know, put the fear aside, maybe he wouldn't have been seeing some of the things he thought he was seeing.
SPEAKER_01Maybe they could maybe they even could have focused on that a little bit more, his fear and him getting getting over this fear. Because I know at one point he's not afraid of the I forget the woman. Oh, the lady in Lavender? Yes, yes. Yeah. He wasn't afraid of her. He had the knife, and then he's like, I'm not afraid. But anyways, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I had two lines. I thought the line with Angus Scrim, who played the tall man, I thought his first line to Jody was cool, and I thought he delivered it well. But I also wrote down the little monologue that Reggie had. When they all got together, they're hanging out at Jody and Mike's house and they're trying to devise a plan to go back and take out the tall man. He said, Okay, I see it. I see it all now. What we gotta do, we gotta snag that tall dude and stomp the shit out of him, and we'll find out what the hell is going on up there. Yeah. We'll lay that sucker out flat and drive a strike right through his fucking heart. And I thought that was the best acting in the film. Yeah, and that's why Reggie probably goes on to be in the rest of these freaking films. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, so Mikey does go on to say that well, that son of a bitch is strong.
SPEAKER_03He said that mother's strong, man. Which is also. Oh, that mother, yeah. So, Matt, did you have any lessons?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so not necessarily a line, but I thought was a really cool scene, and maybe it's just because I'm a I'm a dork for music, where Reggie and Jody are sitting down on the stoop and just playing a song, and it was actually a catchy little song. It was.
SPEAKER_00I did like that portion.
SPEAKER_01I I I so the I believe somebody has somebody actually wrote that song that was that has ties to that movie. But anyways, I just like that. I like that little scene. I thought, oh, it's kind of yeah. I want to hear the whole song, man. Let it go. And then well, it was crazy.
SPEAKER_03That's where you hit the yeah. Because in Friday the 13th, I forget which character was playing the guitar in the cabin, but I could tell, like I I play guitars, so I can tell when you know people are just faking it. Yeah, so those guys were legit playing, and I was like, oh, it was a catchy little tune. Oh, it was. I appreciated it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was uh Jody. Jody, the brother. Oh, so that was that's actually his song. Oh, that's what that song is. Oh, okay, okay. That's awesome. So that's all. That's what I got.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I really like that scene. I I I didn't understand why we had that scene.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00I think I did like it. No, I thought the same thing. Uh it was catching, they're playing music.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it was I think it was like we watch one of our movies that we watched with New York Ripper, yeah, where they they were playing like his buddies music that had nothing to do with the show. Yes, yes, yeah. It was Henry. It was Henry. Right. So maybe Oh, that's it. That's what it was. It was Henry, yeah. So maybe it was Jody trying to get his music out there too. Well, maybe, yeah.
SPEAKER_03A lot of these low budget films are just asking for buddies to put to put songs in them. All right, guys, let's move on. Most enjoyable characters. I'm I'm giving it to Shelly first because I'm itching to know.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, I really like Reggie. Okay, uh, Reggie obviously was the comedic relief. Uh, you always have your funny one in the horror movies. That was Reggie for us. The cool thing is, Reggie, well, a lot of these guys, Reggie's real name is Reggie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And um the director or writer, who was the same?
SPEAKER_03Don uh Costa Reggie.
SPEAKER_00He wrote and directed the fantastic. He did the whole thing. And whole thing. Reggie was his friend in real life, and he wrote this role specifically for Reggie to be himself. This is how this guy is in everyday life. Just like a cool, fun, yeah, buddy type guy. Yeah. So interesting. Don wrote this role for his buddy Reggie and gave him his break. I mean, he only really did the Phantasm franchise. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But I didn't look at his I'm B D to see if there's any other stuff.
SPEAKER_00Right. I loved him. I thought he was a big thing.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna say probably not.
SPEAKER_00Derrett said he loved I'm guessing that's one of your enjoyable characters.
SPEAKER_03He was gonna be one of mine, but I went with someone else. I'm gonna I'm gonna jump in now. So I said The Tall Man, which was played by Angus Scrim, and I know you know contrary to what Shelly said, I thought he was he was a great villain. He was super creepy and intimidating. Uh loved the character was simplistic with the scary elements. He didn't talk a lot, but the things that he said and the way that he spoke, I thought really hit. Also, just shout out to the Murderball. I would have liked more of the Murderball, but shout out to the Murderball.
SPEAKER_00I have nothing against how Ingus played the tall man. I have everything against how the movie features the tall man.
SPEAKER_03I got you. That's my issue. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Not how it was played, but how they used it.
SPEAKER_03It was a great character. They they could have added more meat to him, but I I I did enjoy his character and just like the little things that he did and how they shot him. Like I think the one scene where he's walking down the street and uh Mike's on him, and Red Reggie was getting ice ice cream out of his thing in the and the freezing smoke. I don't know what you call it. Whatever. Yeah, but he just like stopped and froze for a second second. It was like a dream science, yeah, some sort of science smoke. But uh I thought that was really cool, and yeah, it was a creepy little scene.
SPEAKER_01I'm with you, Derek. The tall man was jerseys. What was your favorite too? To the T what you just said. I think I think that his character was well, he was definitely creepy. If you walk down the street today, I'd be like, holy shit. Like just it it just the vibe that he gave out to Shelly, though, too. I wish they would have had a little more to him, a little more, yeah, a little more uh substance or whatever. Just I I wish that they would have went a little bit different direction. SPEAKER_00So it's sad that he only really got caught up with this franchise. A lot of these actors seem to have been sucked in by this franchise. I'm so sorry for them.

SPEAKER_00But they had potential to do more, except Mike and Jody.
SPEAKER_03I don't think that they fell off a cloud.
SPEAKER_00Them as actors. And I checked Mike's IMDB for sure. Uh it's just this, it's just Phantasm series and everything. Yeah. He continued through the franchise too.
SPEAKER_03He wasn't in the second one, but he was in he was in the rest and then Reggie's threw all of them.
SPEAKER_01But a lot of them, like the the first and then like the third one, a lot of them came back in the third and fifth one or something.
SPEAKER_00Well, that happened with Nightmare, the Nightmare series. There was a lot in the first, the second was a whole different story, but then all of them came back in the third for the well if they were alive.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so you guys ready? Let's move on to most annoying characters.
SPEAKER_00Matt, you want to kick this one up?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna agree with you. Um I'm gonna I think I think I might sing something that uh Shelly would agree with Jody. I just there was everything other than his music. I thought his music was stellar, his guitar picking, man, solid. Guitar was great, him and Reggie tore it up. But yeah, I didn't care for I didn't care for Jody. And that relationship too. Yeah, I wish there was more of a better relationship with him and Mike. More believable. More believable. Yeah. I mean, he comes back into the room and then uh Jody and Mike. So I read a little bit about it, they're supposed to have like this sort of like connection.
SPEAKER_03Oh, like the telepathic connection. Yeah, telepathic connection. Yeah, yes, yeah. Because I think when the the tall man steals Mike and he has him in the hearse and he's like going down the road like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Because they flash back to like Mike in the in the hearse and then Jody sitting on the fucking chair. Yeah, just staring at the ceiling. Yeah, back and forth, and then that was it. So I wish that I wish that they would have it would have been a different story if they would have developed those two characters a little bit better. But yeah, Jody. Yeah. I got you. Shelley?
SPEAKER_00Uh the Lavender Lady. No incident.
SPEAKER_03I didn't even think of her, but yeah. Okay, go.
SPEAKER_00I just for what? Yeah, I mean, he seemed pretty capable. The tall man got it. Yeah. Whereas maybe he was shape shifting. Who knows? They never really told us that's what he was doing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But every time the lavender lady killed someone, they flashed to his face, so maybe he was. I don't know. There's really no explanation. Yeah. Like most of the movie. Um I just thought it was gratuitous. And I don't think this movie needed boobs. Yeah. You want to talk about not getting your X rating?
SPEAKER_01Just don't do that.
SPEAKER_00I mean, mind you, I'm strong in my sexuality to say she had nice boobs. Don't get me wrong.
SPEAKER_03That was a boob double. That was a mistake. Oh, it wasn't even her? Those were not her boobs. It was a boob double because she's not. She didn't want to do it. Yeah, she wasn't comfortable with her boobs on screen. Yeah. So they got it.
SPEAKER_00Maybe we don't put the boobs on the screen.
SPEAKER_03Right, right. Something that I thought was odd. So in my mind, Tallman was shape-shifting into Lavender Lady. He definitely was. So that's what I thought. We don't know. We don't know though. Never explained about anything. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Nothing was explained. You're right, but reading about it.
SPEAKER_03So take this ride with me. Go for it. Okay. So Tall Man is ship shifting into Lavender Lady. Lavender Lady is going out and seducing these men. Okay, you get the men to be vulnerable in a position, and then you kill a limb. So in the first scene, Lavender Lady I know where you're Lavender Lady completes the act of having sex with Tommy. That was that's unnecessary, uh, tall man. You don't have to complete the act of having sex with these guys to kill them. What's going on? Maybe it felt good for him. Maybe it did. Maybe the alien dude likes dude. This feels alright. This feels alright.
SPEAKER_00Even worse is when Lavender Lady gets a hold of Jody and they start getting it on.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00How did the underwear end up in his mouth? And he wouldn't drop it.
SPEAKER_03He continued doing it. The kid runs by and he's like, uh?
SPEAKER_00And he's still got the underwear.
SPEAKER_01Yes. He was running with it too.
SPEAKER_00I just am like, you took the time to take the underwear off. Uh-huh. I get if you maybe took him off with your teeth. We know he didn't do that.
SPEAKER_03Classy moves.
SPEAKER_00We know he didn't take the underwear off with his teeth. It was more like they made it like he took them off and then was like ahead.
SPEAKER_01Check me out. Weirdos.
SPEAKER_00So the Lavender Lady was in all the things I hated. So I gave her my worst. I didn't like him.
SPEAKER_03Well, I'm gonna. So Mike was my uh most annoying character. I thought he was just like a pesky, annoying little brother. Couldn't stop stalking his older brother. Also, how is a 15-year-old kid driving like he's a long-lost Duke brother? Right. Was that a Barracuda? What was that car?
SPEAKER_00Well then, dad knows Steve.
SPEAKER_03Steve coming with the facts.
SPEAKER_00Uh it's a 1971 Plymouth CUDA.
SPEAKER_03Nice. So also like, how's this 15-year-old kid driving like that? And then uh just all of a sudden he's got MacGyver traits, like you said. Yeah. So he was annoying to me. I was not a fan of Mike. You guys ready to move on to our favorite kill slash scare? Yes, yes, yes. You are? Okay, great, Shelly.
SPEAKER_00Uh, just the one orb kill. Orb kill was great. The one orb kill. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's there are more in the next films. So if you're into that, check them out if you want to see the murder ball more. But yeah. More of that. I'm there. I'm there. All right. So that's Shelly's. Matt, take it away. I mean, there's really there's really nothing other than that.
SPEAKER_02Was there any anything scary to you? Scary to me? Yeah. Jump scare stuff.
SPEAKER_01No, no, really. I mean, I just again I keep going back to the creepy factor. The tall man and the creepy factor. So just the overall vibe of it. My favorite scene was the spear scene where it hits the guy in the the caretaker in the head and shoots out the blood. I wanted more of that stuff. I think a lot of these movies that we're watching, some of them you're just like, I what I want more. I want more of the blood. I want to watch why in front or how in Friday the 13th, like they killed someone. I wanted to watch her get shot with the air arrow or something. Like, I want to see these things that they don't show. I wanted to see the little dwarves, the little um jawas.
SPEAKER_00Jawas.
SPEAKER_01I wanted to see their faces, like how effed up are their faces and stuff. I wanted to see that. And you got to see that. You gotta check out chapter two. I'm going to, trust me. I I'm when we come back for another one, I'll tell you what.
SPEAKER_03Alright, great, great. Alright, so my obviously everyone loves has a favorite kill, but uh I did I did get jump scared, surprisingly, uh, when for like the hundredth time they separate, and uh Jody goes to the funeral home to take out the tall man, and he tells Mike to shore up their house. So he's going around making sure all the windows are locked. The last window he goes to check, Mr. Tallman is right there. And just the way he's lit up and he looks so menacing, and he crashes through the window and tries to grab him. That jump scared me a little bit. So I did enjoy that.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't the fly that came out of the box. I was waiting for you to be like, the fly.
SPEAKER_03And I thought it went into uh Reggie's mouth. I was like, it went in his mouth, but nope it was in Mike's hair. Yeah. So I was like, all right. Why is there a fly? I don't know, it's not explained.
SPEAKER_01Just dots, just dots on a page is this film. So so any piece of them that that gets caught off turns into a fly. Well, anything, anything off of the tall man, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Right? Yeah, just weird stuff. We're moving on to final cut. In this, I just reveal the shocking ending of the film, and then we discuss our ratings one to five stabs, one stab, atrocious, no redeeming value, waste of time. Two stabs, bad, forgettable, poorly done. Three stabs, mixed feelings, mediocre, okay. Four stabs, good, interesting, enjoyable, and then five stabs, masterpiece, excellent, perfect.
SPEAKER_00Spoiler alert, by the way.
SPEAKER_03Oh, thank you. Yes. So if no one wants to listen to the ending and you want to, you know, fast forward maybe a couple minutes, go ahead and do that now. Thanks, Shelly. Welcome to the Sooking for Jody in the mausoleum, Mike is targeted by the silver murder ball, and Jody pops up with a shotgun and destroys it. Together with Reggie, they enter a brightly lit room which is filled with canisters containing more dwarves. Mike tumbles through a portal and is saved by Jody and Reggie, but sees a red hot world where the dwarves are toiling as slaves. A sudden power outage separates the trio. Left alone in the room, Reggie activates a portal, creating a powerful vacuum from which he narrowly escapes. In the ensuing storm, Reggie, who is now outside for some reason, is stabbed by the lavender lady slash tall man while Jodi and Mike flee, and the mausoleum vanishes in a weird kaleidoscope disco ball effect. Jody devises a plan to trap the tall man in an abandoned mineshaft by using Mike as bait. Back at their house, Mike is attacked by the tall man and chases him outside, where he eventually falls into the mineshaft and is buried underneath an avalanche of rocks triggered by Jody. Suddenly, Mike wakes up in bed. Reggie, still alive, tells Mike that he had a nightmare and that Jody died in a car wreck and proposes a road trip to make them feel better. When Mike enters his bedroom to pack, the tall man appears and yells, boy. Hands crash through the bedroom mirror, pulling Mike inside. The end. How did you forget Shelley? I know you wanted to talk about it earlier. How'd you guys feel about the ending?
SPEAKER_00I judged why are they in a little Mar like a Mars world?
SPEAKER_03I know it turned into slaves.
SPEAKER_00Why are they like marching? Like, dude, dude. Yeah. They're toiling.
SPEAKER_03They're toiling away. They're those those small slaves, poor guys.
SPEAKER_01Matt, how'd you feel about it? I wasn't blown away by the ending too much. I did like the old man standing in the in the mirror and stuff. Just kind of like scared. It's not over yet. It continues to be. I did like that. Again, I I don't know. I guess mixed feelings on the end of it.
SPEAKER_03I'm not a big fan of like, oh, never mind, it was a dream. I really don't like too many of those. If they're done well, great, but you know, I wasn't I wasn't crazy about the ending. I was like, oh, this was all a dream. And then I didn't know, like, I was trying to go, I watched it a couple times, and I'm like, so where does the dream start? Like, I can't pinpoint it. So I'm not a really big fan of the ending, but uh I didn't I did enjoy that little jump scare where you know he's in the room in the mirror and yells boy at him. So you know, mixed feelings. But anyway, so guys, let's move on to our stabs. Shelly, give us the stabs.

SPEAKER_03It's a two. It's a two. Matt. No redeeming qualities, no nothing. Is that what two is? I forget. I I I always I I gotta check back too. No, she didn't give it a one. She gave it a two. No, it's okay.
SPEAKER_00But forgettable, it's forgettable. Yeah, redeeming. No redeeming values was a one, I think.
SPEAKER_03So two stabs is bad, forgettable, poorly done. Which is fair. Right.

SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, and even if you did, I can even if you did, I mean, I can understand that. I can see the different qualities in the movie. I mean, it's not a not a uh stellar movie, but you know, it's for me it was interesting and great. And that's why I gave it a four. Ooh, I gave a solid four. Just because I was really into it. Um watched it two times. I know there's not a lot. You only watched it twice? Oh no, I've watched it probably at least three or four times. Yeah. But like I just I know there wasn't much explanation of a lot of things, but uh I didn't need it, I guess. I mean I needed it, but I didn't need it. Something about it rubbed you the right way. Yeah, I kind of liked it. I just like that. I keep going to the stupid eeriness of it.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, you know, when I when I was trying to give this movie a rating, I was all over the place. I could have went a five and I could have gone with one. So, you know, overall mixed feelings I had about it. So I went with a three. I said it's good and bad at the same time overall, but I liked it and would watch it again, so it landed on a three for me. There you go. SPEAKER_00Uh he thinks that um he just didn't think it was it was for him. Really, no character development, stories seem thrown together, and the kills were meh. He gives it three stabs, and that's going a little high.

SPEAKER_00We got Lisa C said she's she did the review a little different. Phantasm as a standalone movie is decent. Again, sci-fi horror, not the fave, but overall not too bad. Did enjoy the element of what's going on and what's gonna happen next. So she did like that. Keep to hook and watching more. Now throwing the sequels, and this is a whole different movie. The movie series goes to a place that makes you go WTF, and the ending of the series might disappoint viewers. So standalone movie, three and a half out of five. The series is a two and a half out of five.

She watched it a few times and still have no idea what they saw. And then there's my dad's email. Yes.

SPEAKER_00Again, uh, so this is Steve F. And again, I first thing I did was call him and said, Why is this one of your old crazy? He said it's because it's the first horror movie he remembers seeing. So he didn't see any of the other like Friday the 13th or anything like this was one of the first ones. So he said this is actually the first horror movie he ever saw. Brought us the tall man, cloaked Jawa type dwarfman, Reggie, who couldn't give up the franchise, and Jody's sweet ride, the 1971 Plymouth Cuda. His cons. How is the tall man picking up a casket by himself? What the hell is this fucking weird flies? The Lavender Lady is just another form of the tall man, all the shit going on in Jody and Reggie sitting around playing guitars. What the hell is with the weird fly?

SPEAKER_00His pros that it was for the first real horror movie he ever saw. Was it a great no, but it was fun. Uh, he likes the quote, boy.
