Welcome to the little bracket of horse. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Derek.
SPEAKER_03And I'm Roger.
SPEAKER_04And we are Little Bracket of Horrors. And today we have a guest with us, an old co-host of the show and family member of mine, Matt W. Matt, what's up? Welcome back. Hello, hello. How are you guys doing? We're doing pretty sweet. Uh, thank you for agreeing to watch this. But I figured I'd reach out to you because we covered the original Smile back in 2023, and it was a film that you had brought to us for the podcast. So I thought it would be nice to get you back for this episode. Thanks. So uh yeah, thanks for agreeing to this.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, no, thank you guys so much for for having me back. It's uh a little a little bit of a change of uh of people since I last left, but but uh looks like you guys are holding down the fort and you're doing well, and I appreciate uh giving the opportunity to come back and say hi.
SPEAKER_03Awesome. Um, it's a nice compliment to my gray hair, which is nice sexy gray beard. Yeah. Silver fox. Only uh Derek just I don't think Derek has any gray on the bitch.
SPEAKER_04Not yet. Maybe in some the area we can't see.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, he's he's hiding stuff.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I that's the only part of my hair that I dye, and it's purple. You are one of them. I got it. I am purple pubes. But let's play let's play a little catch-up. Matt, what have you been up to since you left the podcast three years ago and uh all that good stuff?
SPEAKER_02Has it been three years?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, 2000 thing.
SPEAKER_10You did two seasons with us and then skipped, skipped out. You left out I did, I got big.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, you did. Yeah, in more ways than one. Um, just uh just uh been hanging out, um working, uh actually uh quit my job um of 20 years and decided I'm gonna start my midlife crisis right now, and I started up a company. So uh so here I am now. I um I'm actually doing uh transportation service for for just people going to the airport, beaches, you know, whatever it is they need, I'm there. So I pretty much uh drive strangers around. I'm your I'm your your ultimate Uber Lyft guy, but I my own company.
SPEAKER_03So do you play them your your music while you're driving them? Do you put them AK on?
SPEAKER_12I put yeah, I do. I put my cover band music on of me singing other people's stuff. Yes, yes, like hey guys, check this out. This is me. Yeah, I'm still in a I'm still in a band and stuff. We're uh we're still playing out and stuff, but uh, but yeah, that's that's pretty much it. Sent my son off to college, Daniel. He's been on Little Bracket of Horrors uh with Ian. Um sent him off to college. So he's uh he's over in Penn State and uh my daughter's got about two more years of high school, and Melissa and I are are uh contemplating what we're gonna do when we're empty nesters. So I don't know. Enjoy yourselves. Yeah, we're gonna have to we're gonna do those like conversation cards that you sit and at dinner so we can have stuff to talk about.
SPEAKER_04I have I I bought those for Carrie and I. They're good, they're good, they're awesome. Yeah, they are awesome. They're great for relationships.
SPEAKER_03You guys can always always adopt another child from like one of those other countries.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, no, we're we're not that good.
SPEAKER_03We're not those people, we're not good people.
SPEAKER_12No, we're not good people. We we're selfish.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that's it, Derek. That's all I got, buddy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, awesome. Well, like I said at the beginning, thanks for joining us. I'm excited uh to have you back on the show. So let's let's kick this off. How we kick them all off. Roger, you want to watch anything scary or anything scary happening? I did update us on.
SPEAKER_03I was ready this time, had my phone out. Perfect. But I I caught on if you rerun the video, I looked confused when Matt started talking because I was like, oh, where's my phone? I forgot it was to my right. I have found it. All right, so let's get started here. Last time we talked about I uh I went and saw I watched the first Practical Magic, but I was we had tickets to go see the sequel, which we went and saw Practical Magic 2 was at Lisa Pick. Yeah, and like say I uh enjoyed the second one just as much as I enjoyed the first one. Not bad. Not bad for uh uh witch witchy movie uh with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Is it like a comedy, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, the this one has some uh some comedy, some uh some some thrills, uh some action, yeah, some magic, some practical magic. But uh it was decent. Uh then we watched at home, we watched off shutter, which memory you can get for $79 a month if you subscribe. Um we watched the movie or you just get somebody's password. That too. Which we don't condemn here or condone condone here a little racket of horse.
SPEAKER_04No commend or condone that. Commend yeah.
SPEAKER_03So we watched the movie called Exit 8. And now this one is from Japan, and uh this one's pretty cool. It it's a guy that gets off at the subway station and walks an endless uh corridor that keeps repeating. Oh, has to figure out how to get out of it. It's based, I guess, on a game too, but like each time um he goes through a corridor, you have to decide if anything if it's uh uh anything's different or if it's real or not. And if you've yeah, a cup you have to start back from like the first one and it's endless, and like you could like I guess do it and starve to death if you don't get out of it. So uh it's pretty it's actually really, really a lot of fun. Lisa liked it too. Um then we watched the movie The Last Video Store, also off shutter. It was just a Roger pick night, and uh it was okay. It was alright. But let's get into what I loved, and that is Resident Evil. You went and saw it. Went and saw the Thailors uh last week, last Wednesday, um, before Lisa and uh company took off her Connecticut. Uh Elf came and stayed with us that night, and we went and saw the movie, and I absolutely loved it. Uh five-star rated, loved it, uh, from our boy Zach uh Krager. Krieger, yeah. Is it Krager or Krieger? That's what I was trying to figure out. Like, I don't want to mispronounce it, but our boy from who directed weapons and before that, Barbarian, and both of those were also Roger, Roger Love's four-star movies. But this one, for being a Resident Evil video game fan, this movie was perfection. And he did it. Uh finally, there's finally a good Resident Evil movie. And uh what pissed me off is the fans that uh berated him and threatened him and all that before the movie was even released. That he came out and said before uh movie started making money, I'm never gonna do a video adaptation again. And then the fans saw and they're like, Alright, it was actually pretty fucking good.
SPEAKER_10Shut up.
SPEAKER_03But it it kind of takes all the Resident Evil and kind of like takes some of the best parts from it and uh rolls into this one. And this one is like sets it up or like uh happens at the same time during like the Resident Evil 2 storyline in the game, and like you kind of see like where like one of the bosses is like how like they're formed, and it's just really really good and just hits all the points, and I just highly recommend it. It's it's it's just just an yeah amazing movie. I can't wait to watch it again. But that's uh highly recommended one. And I just lost my place. There we go. Then I watched Smile Smile 2 last night. Uh but uh did you watch it for the first time last night? No, uh for the second time. Okay, but uh after that, I uh it took me uh what I started watching this movie Friday night and finished it last night after Smile 2, real quick. I had a couple minutes left. It was called the movie Match, which was a to be original. So um it's kind of like a barbarian knockoff movie. Uh okay. They like rip rip a lot of stuff off. Uh I saw it's I saw it on someone's um feed that like, oh you gotta watch this movie sick. But it's uh I give it two stars, two and a half stars. But uh a mom does jerk her son off during the movie. So spoiler alert.
SPEAKER_04Spoiler, Jesus Christ. But uh I don't know if that even qualifies for spoiler alert. I don't know if anyone needed that spoiled.
SPEAKER_03Moms jerking off sons match off Tubi for you. We don't, and with that, that is everything I've watched, and I throw it back to you, Derek.
SPEAKER_10Thanks.
SPEAKER_03You're welcome.
SPEAKER_04Great segue. Uh Matt, what about you? Have you have you watched anything scary or anything scary happen recently?
SPEAKER_12No, I I I can't say. I mean, um I guess I guess I could tell you a quick, quick, scary story as a driver. Um, this was through Uber Lyft. I had a passenger I was picking up who uh his brother helped him get into the car, and he instructed me that I was going to be taking him to a hospital. He's having some chest pains and having uh hard time uh breathing. So apparently shouldn't they call an ambulance? What the fuck is going on? You would think so. You would think so.
SPEAKER_03Ambulances are more expensive, Derek. It's 500 bucks a ride. Just call Soul Life rides.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, yeah. By the way, that's the name of my business. Uh anyone out there looking for a ride. Um, but yeah, so uh rushed him to the hospital without speeding and you know, doing all that nonsense, but got him there, and I was uh I was a little pissed off. I was a little mad at the whole scenario. So um, so yeah, that's I guess the scariest thing. Other than that, no scary movies or anything. Um, you know, sending my son off to college is kind of scary, I guess, but yeah, um, not not the kind of scary where you know lives are in danger or anything. So, but uh, but yeah, that's about it. Yeah, nothing really.
SPEAKER_03Man, I just want to ask you a question. You offer a ride in your car, but how much is it to ride that mustache, baby? That's mustache. Oh, yeah, the whole thing. Well, he has a little stash in the beard, but I got a stash, right?
SPEAKER_04Derek's like, he's just it's the boy, he's just a beard. He's done like that. I don't know. It's like telling someone, oh, you have a really nice porch when they live in a mansion.
SPEAKER_03It's like, yeah, but what about if that if that porch is loaded with if that porch has a couple flat screens, some video games, and a bar, bring a nice fucking porch. Check that porch out.
SPEAKER_12Check it out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But uh for myself, I I haven't really I haven't watched anything. I did have like, I guess what it would you would consider a nightmare the other night, but I had a dream that uh Roger and I were recording a podcast episode, like in my house in person, like old school, how we used to do it, Matt. Yeah. And somehow on during the recording, I had passed out, like fallen asleep. And when I came to Roger was still just talking and continuing on, and I had missed the whole episode.
SPEAKER_03Was your pants still on?
SPEAKER_04Yes, all were you sore? All my all my clothes were intact, but I was just like I didn't take a danger.
SPEAKER_03I was like, I thought maybe I slipped you and Mickey.
SPEAKER_12Do end up with pants off and people passing out and people passing out and waking up with a headache.
SPEAKER_04But yeah, that was that was such a weird dream, and I don't know if it was like because our last episode, I had messed up the upload or something, so I don't know if anyone remembers. We had to we ended up uploading it and publishing it a day later than when I wanted to. So I wonder if my like subconscious was like not letting go of my mistake, like making me punish in my or like punishing me in my dreams for it. So I don't know, it was it was weird, but uh I clearly care a lot about this podcast. I'm having dreams about it. Um, but yeah, like I said, I haven't been watching anything. I did go to a I went to a show last week. It's been a while since I've been out to any any shows, but I did go see turnstile, cold world, and hate breed, and it was really awesome. It was it was fucking in a field in Pinellas Park. I don't know if you ever it's like England Brothers Field if you've heard of it, Matt.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, we've played there, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, you've oh so you have played there. You played at the same place that turnstyle just played at last week, yeah. But yeah, it was fucking awesome. It was cool to like reconnect like with the music I love, and I'm looking forward to going to more shows uh this year. And I next Friday, I'm going to see a ska band, Streetlight Manifesto. So that'll be fun. And yeah, that that was that's that's it.
SPEAKER_03That's gonna help with me. I was gonna guess real big fish.
SPEAKER_04No, I was wrong. I am I am late to the Streetlight Manifesto. I I knew of their band prior catch 22 in like the early 2000s. Uh but uh yeah, Streetlight Manifesto, I started listening to a couple years ago, and they were at work tour when we went last last uh year, but I did not get to catch them because we tried to hightail it out of there before we got caught in the rush. So uh I promised myself if they ever came back around that I would go and catch them. So they just dropped the record a couple months back, and I'll be going out to Janice Live to catch them. So that's uh looking forward to that. You boys ready to get into this movie? I'm ready. All right, Roger. Now is the time for Dig Up the Bones, and this is where Roger introduces the movie and gives a brief summary. This used to be Matt's job, now it's your job.
SPEAKER_11Take it away, Roger.
SPEAKER_12I hand it to you. Watch the professional after three years, after three years, it is now yours.
SPEAKER_03All right, so we have ourselves Smile 2 released October 18th in 2024 with a 6.7 IMDB rating, 86% rotten tomato with an 81% rot uh audience score. Nice straight R. So it's not for the children. No, that's right. Uh, runtime, not so friendly, little rocket horrors, 127 minutes. This is the longest. It's almost almost doubled the time of what we averagely been watching. Um, with a aspect ratio of 2.001. So it's like a little bigger than 1851, but like it's still full screen, so it's kind of just blown up. Um budget was 28 million dollars, growth 69 million in the US and 138 worldwide. Um synopsis, it's about I'm gonna tell you what it's about. It's about to embark on a new world tour. Global pop sensation Sky Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and uh inexpicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame. Sky is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control. Uh tagline is I'll never let you go. Never let go. And we'll see that throughout the movie. That does not let go. Uh, starring Naomi Scott, who plays Sky Riley. She was also played Jasmine and Aladdin remake, uh live action Aladdin and in Power Rangers. Uh also in here is Lucas.
SPEAKER_04She Jasmine and Power Rangers, too?
SPEAKER_03Oh wow Jasmine and Aladdin, but she also was in the uh a Power Rangers remake movie from a few years back. Cool. Um Lucas Gage, who plays Lewis, was also in the movie Companion and also in the Netflix series You uh for season uh previous season, I believe. Um Rosemary DeWitt, who plays Elizabeth Riley, the mom, was also she did six episodes of The Boys, and she was also in La La Land, which is a favorite of mine. Interesting. Uh also starring Miles, I want to mispronounce Gutierrez Riley. Yeah, something like that.
SPEAKER_04Guerrez. All right.
SPEAKER_03There you go. Is it uh it's fine. I have a speech issue with certain syllables and words, so I just mispronounce it all the time. Uh I'm not drunk, even though it probably sounds like I am. Uh who plays Joshua?
SPEAKER_12Sound like you're drunk. You always drunk on you, baby.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know. I'm writing that later.
SPEAKER_02Somebody misses you.
SPEAKER_03You're canceled.
SPEAKER_10Somebody misses you.
SPEAKER_03He played Joshua. He was also in Agatha, he did uh Agatha All Long and in the uh current show called uh Off Campus a few episodes. Also starring Dylan Gulula, who played Gemma, who also did TV show Shameless for five episodes and or maybe eight episodes, somewhere around there, and un the unbreakable Kimmy Smith. If you haven't seen that, that's pretty fun. That's pretty funny. Yeah. Um, written directed by Parker Finn, who also did the original smile, and distributed by Paramount Pictures. And Derek and I have been there together. That's right. We did a backlot tour. Yeah, I took you on a backlot tour of that one, uh, after we did Warner Brothers. That was sick. So I got two reviews here. I got a four out of five uh from someone in the UK, a critic, who said the special effects are bracingly revolting, the malevant smiles are as creepy as ever. And the film had the added bonus of some killer choreography in every sense of the word. It did. Some catchy tunes, too. I know, some very catchy tunes. And uh Sarah Michelle Fetters from Movie Freak.com did not like it. She gave it a 1.5 out of four. She says, While I'm sure, I'll again be in the minority. And just like its predecessor, Smile 2 made me angry, and that's all there is to say. I will say the way the audience scores and overall score of this movie, she isn't a minority because yeah, people liked it.
SPEAKER_04She's like, I didn't like it. That's it. That's a shit review. Tell us why. I fucking hate this piece of shit. Fuck.
SPEAKER_03But uh that's it.
SPEAKER_04That's digging up the bones, Derek. I'm throwing it back at you. All right, well, you can throw it back at me. Uh, yeah, thanks for digging up them bones, Roger. But uh before we get jump into our discussion, I want to get your guys' initial reactions to the landing on Smile 2, which was my pick, by the way. So, Matt, with you being our guest, uh, you know, I reached out to you. How did you feel having to watch the the sequel to one of the movies you brought to the podcast?
SPEAKER_12Well, initially it was honestly I was excited because the first smile I absolutely loved, and I have some kindred kindred to that movie, um, if that's the right word. Um, I don't know if I want to go into all of the reasons why, but um used to have just a recurring dream as a child of uh you know these this creepy like sailor guy with a rolled-up stocking hat would walk past the window and just this like real sinister smile with these bulging eyes. So when this movie came out, um uh I was excited to watch it just because of that. And then uh when you asked me to, you know, participate in this, I was I was even more excited. So to uh to forcibly have to watch Smile 2, which was I mean it's just only because of just life and other things going on. So but um but yeah, I was super excited, very excited.
SPEAKER_04Well, awesome. Thanks for the kind words. Uh Roger, what about you? How'd you feel about uh having to cover this film?
SPEAKER_03Oh well, good time. I've seen it before, uh, because I really liked the original Smile and I actually missed Smile 2 in the Failers. I just I don't know, I forget what was going on in 2024, but I didn't get a chance to go see it. I think we were just busy, and it was just uh just uh didn't get a chance to uh get out and see it on the big screen. But uh we saw Minute Hit streaming, we watched it and we were both Lisa and I, I believe we both really, really liked it. Uh I would even say better than the first one. And uh argue that it is better than the first one, and uh that's that's uh feat you don't say too often about sequels. So uh no, no, it's it's I know it's a good time, and I was like, hell yeah, I was like finally a Derek pick, and uh we get to dive into it.
SPEAKER_04Hell yeah. Uh yeah, this this was my pick. I brought it to the podcast, but for anyone who may have listened to our top horror movies of 2024 episode that Roger was uh recording with me and uh his lovely wife Lisa. But um you may remember my number one film for that year was Smile 2. So spoiler, I'm about to gush for the next hour or two or three on this movie. So that's all that's all I'll say about my initial reactions.
SPEAKER_03Um you need a do you need a pillow for your lap so we don't see that erection you're about to get?
SPEAKER_04I have I have the camera high enough high enough enough.
SPEAKER_03Are you sure? Derek, I've seen that monster.
SPEAKER_04It might it might be it also smiles at you. So yes.
SPEAKER_12It does have the entity into it, so it's you know scary.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It does spread a lot of disease.
SPEAKER_10Um, anyways.
SPEAKER_03Only when you rub it.
SPEAKER_12Well, or somebody else rubs it.
SPEAKER_03Preferably.
SPEAKER_04All right. So let's get into our discussion of feasting fees. And this is where we talk about the pros of the movie, the cons of the movie, the characters dialogue, and we finish it off with our favorite kills slash scares. So, Matt, with you being our guest, please take away with your pros. Pros.
SPEAKER_12Alright. So um I like the way I know it sounds cliche and silly and stuff, but I really do like the way that the movie was filmed. I like the different angles of the cameras. I like how when she's spinning in her chair, you know, the camera's following her. So it's almost like a, you know, sort of like a like a GoPro sort of thing. But um I like the I just like the um filming of it. I thought it was I thought it was really good. And then there's I was trying to remember, Derek and and Roger, there's a reason why it's filmed upside down at some points. I I can't remember the the last movie, it did that too, and then it just reminiscent of that. I was like, oh, there's a reason why they did that, and I forget, but you can tell me. So mainly the the uh cinem cinemography theme. Cinematography. There we go. That's the word. Yeah, cinematography.
SPEAKER_04You've been away from the podcast for three years. I don't know.
SPEAKER_12I don't know how things are I don't know words well, good. Um perfect, but uh, but yeah, I really like the way that it was filmed um and everything. So yeah, that was that's my biggest my biggest pro. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I wonder if it goes upside down, if it's supposed to be like rubbing us off like a frown and like let's turn that bitch upside down, make that smile. I don't know. I don't know. Derek, maybe you know.
SPEAKER_04Well, I I I think it it has to do with moments of hallucination and uh how the how you know the world is being turned upside down for them. But you know, it it it wasn't anything that was like particularly spoken about, but it was just like a thing that he wanted to visually use to you know cue unsettling things about to happen. So it it wasn't much of that.
SPEAKER_03No, like when when it goes upside down, are we in her are we like in her head? Because at points in the movie we're like we're just in her head, and like yeah, not like actually seeing like reality. So when it goes out down, are we just in her head and we're just seeing like the creatures and everything? Because that's at one point you're like she's in one place, then all of a sudden she wakes up and at the end of another. Yeah, you don't know anything in between other than what we see, but you know it's doesn't exist. So it's like when it goes upside down, are we just from that point in her head and not like in reality? I don't know. I'm just I'm just talking out loud.
SPEAKER_04No, I mean that's that's that's totally a theory, and I'm I'm sure if we like went back through with like a fine-tooth comb, we could like you know draw parallels to what you said and when the camera was going inverted and stuff. So I'm sure I'm sure it's there.
SPEAKER_03I'm ready. I got my comb. Let's do this.
SPEAKER_04All right, Roger. What about you? Pros.
SPEAKER_03Pros? Uh I'm gonna talk about that first five minutes in the movie. It's just it just it just starts and just hits you hard, man. And that in that slamming title card, you know, and uh how we we start the movie with the character at the end of the last film, uh, six days later, where he watched uh the lead of the first movie, Torture Self. Um spoiler, Doug is on fire. And uh watch the first one to watch. If you haven't watched Smile One, you're listening to this. Well, turn this off. I'll just ruin the whole movie for a while. Just go back and watch the book.
SPEAKER_04Let's watch the first one and listen to our first podcast, and then watch Smile 2, and then you know like this one starts with you know, no fluff.
SPEAKER_03There's no we don't we don't we don't re-recant the first movie at all. We don't sit there for like a 10-minute clip show of everything that happened in the first movie. Just starts it, bam, here we are, six days later, let's go in uh continuation, and uh just starts with some good good action kills that night, you know, we knifed the guy that's spoilers gonna be my favorite kill, uh, and just and just and just doesn't stop, you know, just just boom, baby. I really like that. Um doesn't fuck around. And um also uh shooting-wise, I really like the close-ups of whenever they do a close-up of the people's faces and reactions and and emotion and the smiles, especially that of Lewis. I just I always think that as like the iconic shot, like one of the when he his smiling face, like upshots, like one of the iconic shots in the movie.
SPEAKER_04He seriously has one of the best smiles out of like the the two movies, he has like the best smile.
SPEAKER_03I want to see him, I want to say I would like to see him dressed up as like the Joker, because I think he would look really fucking good as like if you played like a Joker type character, because uh he reminds me, he he reminds me of like Keith Ledger a little bit. I don't know why when I see him, um gives me that vibe. But um really like that. And also the movie promotes proper hydration because there's so much water in front of me. Every other scene, she's has their giant I think it's Voss V O S water. Yeah, that fancy water stuff that's always on. Like that's like top shelf water at the grocery store. Like it's like next to her to the Evelyn.
SPEAKER_12It's gotta be, it's it's in a glass bottle.
SPEAKER_03Not not that lower shelf stuff of like Dasani bullshit, right? That like tastes like tap water, it's top shelf quality, goddamn water that she's drinking. And she should, she's a pop superstar that's like Lady Gaga. Well, Lady uh that's what I assumed he was shooting for. It's like mixture of like Lady Gaga S pop pop star sensation um that she's drinking during the entire movie. And shout out to the catchy pop songs that pop in and out. I'm a pop music guy on top of my metal, and I like I like a good catchy pop song. And I and and you just get little clips of them, but I was like, man, this actually be a good full-like song. I don't know if I can remember if they were I don't know if they recorded the full-length version of it.
SPEAKER_04I didn't check, but uh I know they had uh they put out like a smile to EP that is a yeah. I I saw I was looking up online, it's like it is available, so oh okay.
SPEAKER_03Maybe I'll add it to the old the old record collection. There you go, buddy. But um, yeah, overall movies movie looks good, shot good, clean, crisp. Yep. Uh everything looks great in it. You uh 28 million dollars budget. Okay, looks good. Yeah, yeah, solid, solid looking thing. But yeah, that's it for me.
SPEAKER_04All right, so with my pros first, I'm gonna I'm gonna speak on Naomi Scott. I was completely unaware of her before I watched Smile 2, and now I am I'm desperate to see her in more horror films. For me, like her eyes sell terror more than anyone else I've watched in a movie. And you know, she dances, she sings, she acts, and she's phenomenal at all of them. And and moments when in the movie, like when she was yelling at people, like I wanted to hide, like she was so fierce, and then when she was vulnerable and being opened and like not listened to by her mom, you know, I wanted to hug her and like you know, comfort her. So like I think she just had a stellar performance, and I will forever champion her work in this film, and uh yeah, also she looks amazing as a blonde. I will say that her her with uh her hair highlighted blonde. I was like stunning.
SPEAKER_03It's like we're getting the like rise and fall of Britney Spears in this movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know I I know I know that happened.
SPEAKER_10You think that's what happened to Britney Spears?
SPEAKER_04The entity goddess, yeah, yeah, as an evil entity godder. But yeah, um, besides Naomi uh on this film, I I wanted to also give a and put a shout out for Parker Finn in my prose. This whole idea was brought about from his early short film. Um, I think it was called Laura hasn't slept, uh, which is great and available on YouTube. I I watched it a while back, but that was the you know the predecessor to the original Smile. Going into this, I was unsure of the decision that Smile 2 would be the immediate second film for him, because I was worried that um he would redo the first film and like make something that was so unique, like feel stale. And even when I saw that that uh you know it was it was infecting a pop star, uh, I was still kind of poo-pooing it in my head. But based on the previous work that he did in the first one, I still planned on seeing this, and I'm glad that I did. Um I think with the second film, he showed a depth of ingenuity. I I didn't know that it was possible. I didn't know that he could get it get even crazier with it. And even with what's been explored in this film, there is still so much more to see. And I'm glad that he left he left a lot of things open to interpretation. And you know, we can explore those with like further smile movies. Also, credit to him. I know he used the same cinematographer, editor, composer, like a ton of different people that helped him build the success of the first film. He also brought back for the second film. So I think that's you know, that's a commendable uh decision on his part to to bring those people back. So just to kick off my pros, I wanted to highlight a couple of those people. Um now I'll get into some other I'm gonna be a while here, so kick your feet up.
SPEAKER_12I got a bed right next to me. I'm gonna go take a nap.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, go lay down, go lay down. We know how you uh when you were on the podcast before, we know how you fell asleep watching a ton of movies.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I'd have to watch them like three or four times. So yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_04As far as the scares and kills go, uh so many creative scares and kills.
SPEAKER_05And cool, Ian.
SPEAKER_04Just yeah, just walk through. Just we're getting, did you hear that? Was that Ian? Yeah, dude. So well, it happened, Roger.
SPEAKER_03Close up. Derek gets one one or two close-ups per episode.
SPEAKER_04I have a magic camera.
SPEAKER_03I give it a I give it some sign language and it zooms in on me. When you look when you look that fine, we gotta bring in, you know, that's how you bring in the ladies and the lady listeners.
SPEAKER_12You don't need a you don't need a uh a whole video video uh like crew. It just it just automatically knows zoom in on Derek and his beautiful features.
SPEAKER_04But anyways, so we're getting we're we're having renovations done in our kitchen, so our wall is open right now. So Ian just walked through the hole in the wall, grabbed some treats, and screamed. So thanks, Ian. Good job. Oh Jesus. Uh so anyways, getting back to my pros. Uh, but yeah, I just think a ton of creative scares and kills. And on this podcast, sometimes we'll be left searching or digging to find something for the kills and scares conversation. But Finn really gave us a ton of different parts to pick from. So I'm excited for us today to get into that section of our conversation, and I'll and I'll leave it at that. But uh, Roger, you you touched on a little bit, but the score for this done by the same guy, let's uh see if I can say his name, Christopher Tapia DeVere or Christopher. Hey, but um just like Finn in the film, he took what he created sonically in the first film and built on it and made it something more in this, and we still got like the low-end rumbles and like overall unsettling musical cues. But with Smile 2, like I noticed how even with Sky's music, uh, like that was tied in a little bit in the moments where they're like high tension. And overall, I think the score and this the sound design was definitely a little bit more aggressive than what we got in the first film. So uh fantastic, fantastic work on a score. Um, overall, the story. Um, I love a head scratcher of a film, and this one long after the credits keeps you replaying moments in the film and like asking yourself whether it was real, like whether it really happened or if it was like just the smile virus playing games with us. And like, for instance, I think it was Gemma, Gemma calling Sky in in the SUV, when like the evil Gemma is driving, and that realization of like, oh, I haven't been spending any time with her, like what the fuck? And then also when Sky's mom bludgeons herself in the neck, then it's shown like it flips it again, and like Sky's holding the shard of glass in her hand, and at the end, you know, we see her mom perfectly fine. So just having this storyline that's like unreliable, having you guess anything everything is a lot of fun. And I feel like the film is it's fucking with us as much as the smile entity is messing with Riley, and I just think it's really entertaining, and I love that part of it. Uh, and with that as well, there's like a subplot of this like being in control thing where a lot of times when uh Sky is having like a hallucination, she'll like close her eyes and like try to refocus and like gain control of the situation, and then when she opens, like she's back in quote unquote the reality. But at the end of the film, which we come to see as and it's you know, a line in a film is like you were never in control, like this entity always was running this. I did it again.
SPEAKER_03You're not in control of that camera. I'm not, I can't control the camera.
SPEAKER_04But I I but I love that part of the film, the ending was amazing too, and yeah, I just I can't say enough stuff about this film. Those are my pros. Jeez, put it back in your pants.
SPEAKER_03I did the long pro segment.
SPEAKER_11I feel bad. Mine was like, I like the way it was filmed. It's good.
SPEAKER_04Good. You put as much effort into it as that negative comment from Rotten Tomatoes. So thanks for that.
SPEAKER_03I'm still she's still angry.
SPEAKER_04She's angry. All right. All right, so let's move into our cons. Matt, what did you not like about Smile 2? Oh no, you guys are not gonna like me. Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_12You are not gonna like me. Smile one was much, much better, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_04Hot take.
SPEAKER_12I I thoroughly enjoy enjoyed Smile One. Smile two. I don't know, man. Um trying to trying to come up with some some uh it just wasn't it wasn't as as good. Um I was getting a little frustrated. I gotta clear my throat. Do you need some boss water? No, no, I I need uh I I know that when you record you gotta edit that stuff. So um I was trying to get it. Not anymore.
SPEAKER_10It flies.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, so no, I just I just think it was I do like the be I did like the beginning, like what Roger said. It kind of set it and it was like, oh, this is this is gonna be a badass movie. And then when it went over to you know Skylar, and and I and I did appreciate, you know, the control and stuff like that. And she's a you know, this pop star who's seems to be in control, but she's not in control in her own life, and and then with the entity, but I just I wanted more, I wanted more surprise shit. Um, I liked um was it Lewis, the the drug dealer. Yes, yeah, I really liked him a lot. I wanted more of him. Um, maybe a couple other visits back and forth to him, and then and then he creeps out a little bit more and bashes the shit out of his face. I mean, that that was awesome. I love that part. But I just it felt very, very they could have they could have done a lot more editing on this movie. Um I feel like again, I'm not a professional, but I just I just it just lost ways and I feel I feel kind of kindred to the guys that you or to the uh person that you guys are busting balls on. I just I just I don't know, man. I wasn't scared. I wasn't but the con the concept of the concept is great, right? The concept is great. Um, and I did like the pop stuff, but I just it didn't give me what smile one gave me. Smile one was just like like kind of like trippy, like I just remember specifically the scene where the girl comes out to the car and her head flops down and twists around and stuff like I want that shit. I want like just sudden, like out of the blue, just oh normal, and then boom. I don't know. I just wasn't it wasn't what I thought it was gonna be. I have to say I was kind of disappointed. Um, so yeah, unfortunately, but but concept still great. Love the concept, love the idea. I just I don't know. I wanted more. I I wanted more. Um, so yeah, that's that's that's my pathetic take.
SPEAKER_04I mean that remind that reminds me of the scene where Sky's getting have her having her photo shoot done, and the photographer is just telling her he needs more. Yeah, so Matt is the photographer of the movie.
SPEAKER_12Well, the other thing too, go ahead, Roger.
SPEAKER_03Did it make you angry?
SPEAKER_12Uh I got I got rather annoyed. I got rather annoyed because I was leading to anger. Yeah, this is this is frustrating. I was frustrated more than Matt. I was frustrated. Yeah, um, and then I I mean I get it, like, you know, the the the one thing that you know, I I like the snotting, the the the nose, the face filled with snot and stuff. Like, I just I mean that's so minor, but I just I just couldn't take it. I'm like, just fucking wipe your face. I don't want to snot all over your nose and stuff. Yeah, it's like I don't know. That's that's my news. That's minor. But yeah, I don't know, man. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I feel bad. Do not apologize more. Do not apologize more.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Movies are subjective. You know, everyone's gonna like the same thing, but Matt, fuck you.
SPEAKER_12And Derek, like the the the background of of your of your setting there, I wanted more of that. I like I like it. Okay, cool, yeah. But I wanted I wanted more of that kind of stuff, like you know, so we'll see. I mean, we'll go into it a little bit more, maybe, but but um there's a there's a lot of uh possibilities for some more smiles, and maybe maybe we'll we'll get what I want. So yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right, Roger, what about yourself?
SPEAKER_03Cons. Uh I'm gonna I'm gonna talk some specific movie things I picked out. And I saw that I was like, man, that's just that's just having this just having a bad week. But uh I'm gonna say that uh drugs and alcohol kids, just say no to that because that will that's where you get your down roll spiral in life. Uh if we look listen look at the lesson learned by Skye that you know a little crazy. She you know intentionally crashed her boyfriend's car off the cliff, you know, get a little high, get a little alcohol, you know, and you just gotta be careful. Careful, don't get don't get a crazy girl. And uh luckily I lucked out and uh I love my wife. Uh she's segue into your wife, and uh uh she's not crazy. Uh the fact that I in crazy and love her. Oh crazy in our relationship. Look at that segue.
SPEAKER_04I have to be careful with my hands. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, don't don't do it. Yeah, I'll do it for you. But you know with your half thumb there today.
SPEAKER_04Everyone look, everyone go on YouTube and you can finally see Matt's half thumb that we talked about for two seasons.
SPEAKER_03And if Lewis didn't go down the hard dark path to selling some drugs, use the Lewis today. Really, yeah. So, you know, drugs, alcohol just lead you lead you to uh killer entities that smile. Uh so you remember that the life lesson. Also, shout out to uh people with bad backs because also and the reason why I'm saying this is because last weekend, uh the week before I was at a I was down for the count, couldn't go to Holland Horror Nights because I had a little issue in my body. Then the following weekend, I woke up Saturday morning with a giant fucking knot in my back, and I was limping around Saturday and Sunday. At least I had a like used roller on me and like heat and cold to get it out, and I was just in so much pain. I was like, ooh, two weekends in a row where I can't do anything. But I I but I was feeling with Skye when she was uh touching her scar and her back. I was like, baby, that was me last weekend. I feel your pain. Uh so yeah, bad backs, that's your core of your body. Keep it healthy, keep it good because your back bad, you can't do shit.
SPEAKER_04You're f you're F to the A.
SPEAKER_03Also, um I was gonna say, one, when you wear tidy whiteys, make sure you wipe your ass because when you leave your underwear on the ground, even though it was an hallucination, you leave no skid marks. All right, and I saw that, I was like, fuck man, that's some dirty underwear. Alfredo, right? Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Alfredo left some sauce in his undies. See, I like that scene. I like that scene.
SPEAKER_03The entire time, but man, wipe your fucking asshole. You know, clean that shit in the shower. You won't you won't leave uh skids. Because we and say, like he got this guy or got with a lady, and you start undressing, take off your underwear, and there's some fucking shit stains on it, it's gonna take her out of the mood. You know, you're not gonna get second base, my friend.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like you're speaking from experience.
SPEAKER_03No, I've never I haven't shit my pants.
SPEAKER_04It's gonna ruin everything, trust me.
SPEAKER_03If you wear boxers, if you shit your pants, you know, guess what? You ain't gonna notice. Especially if you've got brown boxers, there you go.
SPEAKER_04Shit stained color underwear. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03And uh let me I got one more. Let me just look at a little closer because this is a continuous. Continuation of Roger can't read his own handwriting. Hold on, I'll figure this out.
SPEAKER_04My favorite part of the show.
SPEAKER_03All right, here we go. I found I figured it out. And to that one fan that ruins the meet and greet. She's having a good meet and greet with fans, and that crazy, yeah, he's part of the smile crew. We wouldn't we know that. But from my experiences at conventions, all it takes is that one dipshit that goes in there and thinks, hey, I'm your biggest fan, I love you, and just wants to get all touchy and feely with the with the with the with the guests. And you know, then that's why they stay behind their tables and why they don't come out behind and be a little more friendly. It's because it takes one dipshit, one asshole to do that. And we have experience that at Spooky Empire.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I bet.
SPEAKER_03With people and and and just reading about at other conventions where like uh a guy assaulted uh Kate uh Beckinsell. Kate Beckinsell. Kate Beckinsell? Oh no, got a little tried yeah, yeah. He got uh he got she she he got arrested and uh she she took about 20 minutes, but I heard she came back out and finished that day. It was big on her. But uh I I've seen her in person before at uh the London premiere of Click. Uh her and that Hasselhoff I saw in person, right like two feet in front of me. I was just I was just happening to walk right into it, and I walked up to the gate and she walked right behind me. Lisa covered years. I understand why that guy is older, she looked pretty fine. But but I'm not gonna I'm not gonna tell him this hole. This is bad.
SPEAKER_04We can't talk about the tragedy of it and then somehow understand it.
SPEAKER_12I know you keep showing up in those uh bowling shirts. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, right. That's right. Ladies like you're right there.
SPEAKER_09Oh shit. Hey, settle down.
SPEAKER_03But that's uh that's my that's that's my that's my cons for the for the film.
SPEAKER_04Um very well done, Roger.
SPEAKER_03Thank you for your your unique perspective on pros and uh I like to I like to take it from a different perspective so we're just not repeating each other.
SPEAKER_12PSAs.
SPEAKER_04It's all PSAs. I love it. Um for myself, I had to do a little bit of digging, and you know, I I did come up with something, it's not necessarily a con, but maybe something they could have done better. But at the end, the smile monster. Um, I love the look. I love the practical work and the creation that went into like the reveal of the beast at the end, it was all really good, but I think it would have been cooler and scarier if instead of the creature, we got like car crash sky, you know. The the look of her crazed, bulging eyes was way scarier to me than anything else in this film. So, though I did enjoy the creature design, I feel like if they had the car crash sky like crawling up to her on a stage with like that exaggerated stare, it would have been way more of a creepy ending uh to like show that Sky's mind was gone and she was being completely taken over. So, um, like I said, it's not a huge con, it's not a big con, really, at all. But uh maybe just like utilize the the creepy eyes of the car crash sky would have been awesome in that moment.
SPEAKER_03It sounds like you had a dig for that one. You're probably like, fuck, I love this movie. This is the greatest movie ever made. The way you talked about the pros, that's what I'm assuming.
SPEAKER_04So I know it was a last-minute ad. I almost was gonna say I got nothing, but I wanted I wanted to give something for this section, so I I I found that. So those are our cons. Let's move on into characters.
SPEAKER_03Matt we we were wait, hold on. We were con real quick. Do you think that Dr. Guy even existed at all? Or was he or we're talking about Morris? Yeah, yeah. Was he was he uh I was gonna get in.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna get into this in my characters, but no, let's chat no, let's chat about it now. We're doing it.
SPEAKER_03Well, you're talking about you're talking about that section of the movie, so I just wanted to ask you if you thought was he a smile monster the entire time or smile smile uh inner head or thingy. I have some some thoughts too.
SPEAKER_04He was he was straight a hallucination, he never existed. I don't know. I I I just feel like he he was a tool for the monster to keep her mind in like a cage area while it moved her body to the to the arena for the final for the final show. So I think I don't think he was real at all. What about you, Roger?
SPEAKER_03I'm assuming the same thing. He was part of the smile smile crew, and uh that's like behind you. But yeah, I I I think it was just a way for her to give her a little hope that uh so a little distraction from what was going on, so she just he can um that guy manipulate her from other directions too. Yes, you know, and uh and that's it.
SPEAKER_04And it gave her false hope because Morris's whole part in this movie to play was that ooh, we have a way to beat this. When she goes, she goes to the pizza hut, all that stuff, but like just to find out like no, she never had control, and his whole part was an hallucination, along with obviously Gemma. But yeah, that was uh that's what I thought. I know Matt, Matt, you said you you had thoughts on Morris as well.
SPEAKER_12Well, I think I think that he was real initially. I think when they were sitting in the bar and they were having the conversation and she kept saying, Fuck, you know, fuck you, blah blah blah, he was real. Then when she needed him, he wasn't real. So the whole so that's just kind of my take of it. I thought he was real initially. He did witness his brother being killed. Um, I don't know how he would know it was an entity or whatever, but that's beside the point. But I think he was real initially, and then when she needed his help, um the uh the monster provided her help. He gave her help. Yeah, nice. So that's my take.
SPEAKER_09All right.
SPEAKER_04Uh, what about I mean, we're talking about Morris. Uh Matt, any other thing about any of the characters you wanted to touch on?
SPEAKER_12I mean, again, the the one that I the one that I really liked was just the um was uh Lewis Furlog. Furloggy? Yeah? Yeah, I just liked him because I I thought, I mean, like you said, his his face when he did the smile was was fantastic. I thought him as like this, you know, out-of-touch drug dealer was was fantastic. You know, how he got the entity was really was pretty cool too, with the guy going in and trying to, you know, transfer the entity onto these, you know, drug dealers or whatever. And then Lewis was there, you know, he pops up. Oh shit, what's going on? You know, wrong place, wrong time. Yeah, so then he gets in infected or whatever you want to call it. And uh, I really liked his character. He was probably my favorite character in this movie. The drug dealer. The drug dealer, man. He was he was great.
SPEAKER_03His uh his apartment is pretty sweet. I I wrote down Lewis too. I was like, man, me and him could be friends. He loves pinball, he likes playing guitar, even though he does sell drugs. But I was like, fuck, I can hang out with that. I can hang out with this guy.
SPEAKER_04If you were just railing against drugs, you'd be like, I can hang out with Lewis.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, I mean you know, there's people that do things that you might not do or or are gonna do for a living, but you know, whatever. I'm not gonna be like judge a guy because he's trying to try to you know how much the apartment like that in New York City would cost? That's fucking that's expensive, motherfucker.
SPEAKER_12That's a five or six grand right there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, if that, yeah, uh probably more, but like you know, he's probably a successful successful drug dealer. Yeah, I'm assuming very good at what he does. He just buys some toys. He he and he loves Call of Duty, loves video games too, because he had Call of Duty uh Modern Warfare, I think, three on his uh TV. Yes, only because I also have that game, so I recognize it. So uh it's like oh shit, he's playing.
SPEAKER_12He had a samurai sword. All right, that's true. It's fucking cool. Dope, right? Yeah, yeah, dope. I'd be off in the corner playing with the samurai sword while he's you know sniffing lines and playing video games.
SPEAKER_11Oh yeah, man. Can I play to that? Yeah, go for it.
SPEAKER_04Cutting yourself, having to take yourself to the hospital, yeah. Probably, or you could just call Soat Life Rides and they'll take you to the hospital.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, I thought you were gonna say, like cutting yourself some bread. Give me the hospital as quick as possible.
SPEAKER_11Give you an extra tip. Yeah, I'll tip you good, I promise.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, give me look at me being a good brother, plugging plugging your your business as much as I can in the episode. People listen to this, right? Sure, why not?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a couple if carry was on this, we would be huge in Iowa right now. Like that's an extra like hundred listeners in Iowa.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Iowa.
SPEAKER_03That's interesting. They love Carrie in Iowa.
SPEAKER_04Uh that the uh oh my gosh, Tammy and the T-Rex episode that we did. Remember that, Matt? Yes. Uh we got like maybe 200 some listens from Cedar Cedar Bluff, Iowa, or whatever. I was like, what did this happen?
SPEAKER_03What happened here? That's still the that's the second biggest episode we did, or was it or is that that number that overtook uh dash cam?
SPEAKER_04No, nothing will ever, ever, ever, ever overtake Dash Cam. We have like 3,000 listens for that episode. Dash Cam. It's it's it's and like 90% of the listens are over in the UK.
SPEAKER_03So shout out to Ray from Texas.
SPEAKER_04Let's go, Ray. I hope Ray's okay. I haven't heard from Ray in a while. Ray, we love you. We hope you're okay. All right.
SPEAKER_03Hopefully, you didn't have a bag, Chimmy Changa. Chimmy Changa? Texas Chimmy Changas. Texas Chim Changa. Chimichangas.
SPEAKER_04Um, all right. Uh, what about you, Roger? Any any characters you want to speak on?
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna talk about Sky for a sec, man. She's just having the worst week ever. You know, he just a girl just trying to be a pop star, trying to trying to make a living. Uh trying to make a living, yeah. And she's just trying to score some dope. And you know, she witnessed Louis, you know, take his own, take his own life, lose weight. Do do lift too, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I saw him with the shirt off. He's got he's got pecs.
SPEAKER_03So he's in shape, you know. Um, but maybe that's karma, right? Because she tried killing her boyfriend.
SPEAKER_04Driving him off and and and and she's a troubled and flawed character. Yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Taking him off the road. So uh, you know, but I guess what comes around, uh what goes around comes around type of thing with her. Um uh shout out again a shout out to Lewis. Cool dude. Uh we never got a chance to see his chops on the guitar though. Uh yeah, if he could play a lick or he could just do Mary Has a Little Lamb. Who knows?
SPEAKER_04I bet I bet he can play uh Crazy Train. Probably could. Dun dun.
SPEAKER_03But uh I also want to talk about Gemma.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's talk about Gemma.
SPEAKER_03She reminds me of the friend that just tells you what you need to hear. She's not gonna be the one that's like everything's gonna be okay. She's the one that's like, no, you're like, you know, get your shit together, uh, type of friend. The friend that the friend I I wrote down, the friend that keeps her real. And we all I think we have people now in our lives that just don't bullshit and just say, no, motherfucker, you messy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, even though she wasn't, we didn't we never saw the real Gemma.
SPEAKER_03I'm assuming that's just what the Gemma, the creep that's the that's fake Gemma the entire movie. Um that's just probably what is in her head of Gemma and what the creature made, which I guess pretty accurate because it fooled her the entire time. But uh we never got a chance to meet the real Gemma, and maybe that's good for the real Gemma that she didn't come into this situation.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I mean, uh uh fake Gemma in the bed told Sky that uh, you know, because Sky was like moaning and groaning about why this all this stuff was happening to her, and she's like, Maybe it's because you're an evil person. She was like, What did you say?
SPEAKER_12And then we got that cool scare. But yeah, that was that was a good that was a good scene. I like that one because again, reminiscent of childhood. My cousin did that to me, turned over and smiled like that, and I punched him right in the face. Yeah, anyways, yeah.
SPEAKER_03He wasn't like, hey Matt, you want to try some?
SPEAKER_12Hey man, oh no, stop it.
SPEAKER_03You wanna play Tommy Sticks?
SPEAKER_12We were like eight years old, six, seven, eight years old. So I'm like, I think that's when that stuff happens. It does.
SPEAKER_03So badly, but uh that's uh that's it with me on care, other than the mom being, you know, or you know, kind of a kind of a C U N T.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, she was like she was a complete stage bomb.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but uh, you know, that's it on the characters we want to hit up. What about you, Derek?
SPEAKER_04Uh yeah, so you know, Sky was everything to this film. I mean, we were following her a majority of the time, minus I think the opening scene with Joel, but we were with her the whole time. And Naomi Scott did an awesome job. Character was, you know, like I spoke a little bit ago, obviously flawed. Uh, and it was tough to get like a grasp on her, like if we were sympathizing with her or what we how we felt about her. But ultimately, you know, it didn't really matter how we felt because things were happening and they were gonna happen regardless of how we felt. So um, but she was still she was a great main character. Uh the only character that we haven't really touched on that I want I I guess I'll bring up is uh Darius, who was the um he was the guy running the like children's charity or whatever. But I'm just curious, like, what's up with him and why does he have beef with Joshua?
SPEAKER_12Which one was Joshua?
SPEAKER_04Joshua was like her assistant.
SPEAKER_12Oh, her assistant.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because when he walked in the room, like everyone said hi to him. He gave a big hug to Elizabeth, her mom, and then uh Joshua went to walk up to him and give him a hug, and he was like, Hey man, and he just completely dodged him and like went straight to sky. I was like, What's going on there? Why the beef was like Joshua is like a ray of sunshine, always positive, super nice guy, but he's just he doesn't have the time or day for him. I thought that was cold hearted.
SPEAKER_12Darius is a dick.
SPEAKER_04Darius is a dick. That's what I think is going to be.
SPEAKER_12I think so. But yeah, he's a mug music executive. Yeah, he is involved with Skylar's career.
SPEAKER_03So hey, you want a record deal? How about use that mouth? That's probably how it happened. That's that's the real terror. That's been there. This movie. Matt's been there. He had to do what he had to do.
SPEAKER_12I did. So I come that's how I got my cover band.
SPEAKER_04All right. So uh yeah, I think we touched on everyone pretty much for this film. So let's jump into dialogue. Matt, did you have any pieces of dialogue that you wanted to highlight?
SPEAKER_12I guess the only thing I mean I can that's coming off the top of my head that I I just liked was uh her, you know, telling herself that she's in control. Uh she kept reminding herself that she's in control, she's in control, and she thinks she is, but she's but she's not. Exactly. She's not anywhere near being in any kind of control. So um, I guess I like that. Um, yeah, that was probably my my I guess my favorite dialogue. Very good.
SPEAKER_03Roger, how about you? I wrote down a couple notes. I always enjoy the classic uh what in the fuck uh quote uh that they use in the movie. Also, two standouts I have from lines are well, before we start stucking each other's dicks by Gemma, my girl Gemma, a classic. Yeah, I've used that. I use that one, I've used that one before in my life.
SPEAKER_04A lot of guys.
SPEAKER_03Good guys. Yeah. Also, what my probably my favorite line in the comment always makes me uh chuckle is uh from from Sky Riley, who uh near the end says, I can't believe I'm gonna die in a freezer in a pizza hut. And I always think that's a good one. Yeah, like who knows? You just never know where you end up at the you know at the end. Uh, but Pizza Hut, that's Lisa's favorite pizza. Oh cheap pizza. We'll just say cheap pizza is Pizza Hut. I prefer on the cheap pizza side, little Caesars.
SPEAKER_12Thank you.
SPEAKER_03That's the real cheap $5 hot and ready pounded through the screen.
SPEAKER_10I can't I can't do that or my screen will zoom in. No, don't I'll high five. You can do a close-up of you.
SPEAKER_03Five dollar hot and ready every Friday night when I was in college. I would eat on that through like Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I because I had as every other college kid, no money. But five dollar hot and ready, baby. Uh, and I will always say the Caesar wings are delicious. Either baked, get double, double buffalo sauce. And you can pour them after you eat them, you pour the sauce on your pizza, and it's delish on a pepperoni.
SPEAKER_12Okay. Or quite the connoisseur.
SPEAKER_03But uh, yeah, I I if I had to choose, I'd rather die at a uh Caesar, uh little Caesars. Yeah, uh if you had to choose at a place to die at pizza, what would you choose, Derek? I don't uh hut, a Caesar, a Jimmy, uh say Jimmy John's, a Papa John's.
SPEAKER_04How about this? We're gonna we're gonna step it up. Put me in a mellow mushroom freezer.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit. That's mid that's mid-shelf pizza right there. That's that's our top shelf. That's mid. That's mid. That's pretty good, Derek. Thank you.
SPEAKER_12I'm with Roger.
SPEAKER_10Put me in a little Caesars. Let's go.
SPEAKER_03Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_10Let's load my load my bloated carcass into a little Caesars.
SPEAKER_03Yep, pizza pizza, baby, pizza pizza.
SPEAKER_10Pizza pizza all the all the way.
SPEAKER_03But uh uh that's my uh that's my question of you you two this SF's. Where do you want to die? Where do you want to die? But uh but that's it on the dialogue that stood out for me. What about you, Derek?
SPEAKER_04So I I really like the part where uh Sky went to that children's charity gala and the prompter frozen her, so she just started ad libbing. So I'm just gonna I'm gonna give the the end of the ad lib, but she goes on to say you'll be spending years of your life chasing success, thinking when it comes, it will magically fix everything that's bad and wrong about you. And then you achieve success and you realize that you can't fix the deeply broken person that you have always been, and now you can't escape the miserable thing that you've become, and one day you realize how badly you wish you could trade it all in just for one fucking moment of happiness. Then the prompt comes back on, she composes herself, and she's just like, Oh, sorry about that. What I meant to say is I hope the next generation of young artists find themselves truly inspired tonight. I know I sure am. After just going like dark, just like, oh, here we are. We're back, we're back on planet Earth. Like, I I thought that scene was funny. There's a lot of like little comedy moments in this movie, but uh that moment uh was pretty pretty funny for me. So I liked it a lot.
SPEAKER_03And I was then she well, then she knocked an old woman off the stage, and you probably were like, Oh, it was the best.
SPEAKER_04Look at that little bitch go. I know, I love that. That was fun.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so that was pretty good. I thought it was funny, it was very good.
SPEAKER_04But then I I also did like as someone who uh can fumble over their words, and I have a podcast, so that's an issue. But I liked her little vocal warm-up that she had, and she she just said, I need some water for my daughter. I need some water for my daughter. I need some water for my daughter. The second line was I need a waiter and some water. I need some waiter, I need I need a waiter and some water. So I need some waiter and some water to get the lips and the tongue working.
SPEAKER_03I bet she has the clearest pee ever by drinking that much water. It's just crystal crystal. She could probably pee in a Voss bottle and still look like water. It's it's so clean. Well, other than the drug, maybe not.
SPEAKER_12Didn't her didn't her mom say something like when she woke up in uh what it wasn't even a hospital, where was it?
SPEAKER_04It was it was it was a rehab facility, yeah.
SPEAKER_12Her mom, her mom said she was extremely dehydrated.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit, the bitch was drinking water the entire fucking every senior. That's what I'm saying. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_10What lies?
SPEAKER_03She had an IV in her arm too, on top of that. It's like fuck she is overly hydrated. Drinking too much water is just it's pretty, it's it's a bad, it's not good for you. You can do that.
SPEAKER_04It's called uh dry drowning, right?
SPEAKER_03It's like what water intoxication or just oh Roder, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You're right. I'm wrong. Dry drowning might be something else.
SPEAKER_03Say it again, Derek. I don't care if I have to at home and when I'm for a married man, I only hear that every once every blue moon. Oh god, sounds like I always thought it would.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna look in the I'm gonna look in the camera so it looks like I'm looking at you, Roger.
SPEAKER_03I'm looking at my camera, looking at you.
SPEAKER_04Okay, well, no, look at the screen so you can see me looking in your eyes.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Roger. Yes, you're right. Oh god, it does it tastes so sweet.
SPEAKER_04Do you need a towel to mop up that mess?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_04Gross. All right, let's go. Just put glasses on.
SPEAKER_12Some podcasts about scary movies, right?
SPEAKER_03You just put glasses on, Matt.
SPEAKER_11They put on. Put my own entire time, man.
SPEAKER_03No, have that shit. I fucking just put them on. Fuck.
SPEAKER_11You gotta you gotta take your mind off a dick's bro.
SPEAKER_12So hard. Have you seen your brothers? I have. Yeah, we've done some pretty uh mean things to him as a little kid.
SPEAKER_10So yeah, well, that's why I have a great personality, right? That's it.
SPEAKER_12That's it. Oh shit. Oh, Matt fell off a cliff. Well, my computer, I forgot to plug it in. It just told me it's low.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, go plug your computer in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think I think Matt just hit a line off screen like Lewis. That's what I really think is going on. Matt's okay. We we accept your dronic and dronic drug abuse.
SPEAKER_04Well, Matt's for Matt's joining us remotely from uh trail in the woods, so yeah, uh I thought he fell off the trail.
SPEAKER_02Oh beautiful back here. Yeah, it's beautiful.
SPEAKER_10Um, did you get it plugged in? Are you fine? Yeah, it's plugged in.
SPEAKER_12Okay. Here's the thing. I plugged it in because I was getting ready and I plugged it in underneath the desk table here, and I did not plug it into the computer.
SPEAKER_09So you got a warning.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, so it's like blink. I was like, oh shit. Nice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. All right. So that takes us through dialogue. Let's go to kills and scares. Matt, what do you have for kills and scares?
SPEAKER_12Um, well, I mean, my god, how can you how can you uh have any kills or scares without the uh Lewis's kill? I mean, that was fantastic, right? It just started one bash, and you're like, oh, he he messed himself up pretty good, and then he just kept going. And then just like, oh, now you're seeing skull, now you're seeing teeth, now nose isn't even there anymore, it's just smash. So um, so that would that's definitely my favorite. Um, and then obviously, you know, a good old mom starts stabbing away at herself, those are those are good too. So um, yeah, those are mine for sure.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the the mom scene. Uh I was I was wincing a ton just because any kind of throat wounds, I'm like, ugh. But then then they had to cap it off with an eyeball gouge. Yeah, and I was like, oh my god, the scene was not meant for me at all.
SPEAKER_10I can't accomplish this.
SPEAKER_03It was rough to watch. It's a terrible way to fake fake die. Yeah. Painful.
SPEAKER_04And then cutting her cheek. She cut her cheek. Yeah, and then she did that. Yeah. Poor poor mom. She she got it pretty rough.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but she was okay. She was okay in the end. Yeah, I mean, she was all hallucination. Well, then she saw her daughter kill herself on stage. Amongst thousands of other people, so they're all they're all they're all part of it now.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, yep. Yeah, all they're all infected.
SPEAKER_04All could be all because of that sneaky fellow behind Roger.
SPEAKER_02You're petting him. Hello.
SPEAKER_10Hey buddy, he's my little buddy. We know the sex of it, Derek. Uh, I'm gonna say he they them. He they them short, and yeah.
SPEAKER_04Sh me. Uh, yeah. Um, for me, I think you know, Joel's death was was cool just because it was a conduit from the first film to this film was connection. So I enjoyed that.
SPEAKER_03And I feel I feel bad that he he gets killed by the truck because he passed it off. He did what he had to do because Lewis gets infected. So he he he's he's safe. Yeah, then he runs away and gets hit by the fucking truck and gets killed anyways.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_03I was like, oh man, that dude's having a bad week too. Oh, then I forgot I forgot to mention how um it pans away and it's a smile and blows to the blood truck. That was cool, yeah. Yeah, that was pretty cool, yeah. Like that's reminiscent to that of the poster of the movie of her first.
SPEAKER_04No, I I love that. I thought that was awesome. Um, I guess I guess it's a scare, but um, it was when Gemma was in the bed and I kind of talked about it a little bit, but they've done it before where they've like mixed in like somebody with like an automobile noise. They did it in the first one and they did it again with this, but her face like being lit up as like a car light, and then and then the horn of the car was just again very creative, and I just loved I love that scare so much because like we were expecting something to happen, but I was not expecting her face to be lit up like that, and just to get to hear a car horn. So uh, you know, we talked about the creativity, but I but I thought that was really cool. Um, another scare that I absolutely have to talk about is behind me. I'm not good at pointing, but the choreography, the the smiling dancers choreography. Uh I mean, just a wall of people with like the evilest smiles crawling all over each other, and like all that guy right behind you, Derek.
SPEAKER_12Except for that, nope, nope, not him. He's good. Go the other way. That guy with the Gary Ray shirt on, or whatever it is, something. Yeah, this guy right here, he's not scary.
SPEAKER_04He's silly, he's silly, silly guy, anyways. Uh most of them were terrifying, they're they're all terrifying for me, but um, yeah, I just thought uh I'd love that scene. Like they they started off in the hallway, like crawling towards her. Well, they started off in a closet, but then they got to the hallway, and that hallway shot of them like crawling towards her, and then just like the mirrored vision of them, just like it looked like a hundred people coming after her.
SPEAKER_03So I f I thought it was like local community theater that just showed up in her closet. It's like, oh, they're about to do uh do a nice little rendition of something here.
SPEAKER_04I didn't look, but I guarantee you that the the choreographers that were in the scene, I guarantee you they're they were the choreographers with her or the dancers that were with her in uh in her practice space and then on on the stage, and guaranteed that they use the same people. Yeah, um, but yeah, um I think that's that's it for kills and scares for us. Did were there any other parts you wanted to talk about, Roger?
SPEAKER_03You skipped over me, Dirk. Oh, I skipped over you completely. Black guy don't exist. This is the second time you've done this in our but it's fine. It's fine. I know I'm invisible, but I'm right here, baby.
SPEAKER_04Well, you your shirt your shirt is kind of blending in with your background. Here is that help show some I got a little show some man chest. I need some man chest.
SPEAKER_03My hair looks like no, I'm not a hair, I'm not a hairy person. Look at that. Yeah, look at you.
SPEAKER_11But you get some facial hair.
SPEAKER_03A little bit, a little bit. It's all my ass. That's where all my hair is at. Lisa will tell you I have a hairy body.
SPEAKER_04It's all that's all inside my ass.
SPEAKER_03It has no shape, it's flat, but that's it's hairy. Has all that's where all the hair is at.
SPEAKER_04Is it also gray?
SPEAKER_03No, only I'm a head baby. Yeah, hasn't hasn't hasn't gone below the waist yet. You can dye it purple. Oh well, maybe I'll do uh orange. We do I'll do orange if you do purple, it were like Halloween colors.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's cool.
SPEAKER_03All right, Matt can do uh another color that's Halloween, like green or something.
SPEAKER_12Oh, green, yeah, green. I like green.
SPEAKER_05Nice.
SPEAKER_03All right, so shout out again to the good knife kill in the beginning. I really like that one where he's like, You want to see something? Oh, yeah. Right across his chest and just rips him up and right across the throat. Then him getting hit by the truck again on the outside. I was like, man, he did it, and then just dies anyways. Karma. I mean almost like with Sky, with Sky jerking the wheel and going off the cliff. It's like in reverse, where like she ends up with the with the curse, where he gets rid of the curse by having to kill someone, then get hit by the car. So it's it's like almost the same type of cycle, just kind of in reverse, if you think about it. Yeah, um, and it just came to me right there. I didn't write note for that. I was like, huh, that kind of makes sense. On the phone. Um, little woman going off the stage.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that was great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, and that that guy that played uh what was Hudson, her boyfriend was fucking Jack Nicholson's son. So of course his smile is gonna be you know very unsettling in that moment. So yeah, what a great, what a great moment. Yeah, and that lady gets launched off the stage. It's fucking sick.
SPEAKER_03And uh, there's there's a good jump scare. Where was it? I wrote something jump scare. Oh, little Lewis jump scare. When Lewis reappears uh off to her side, it's like that gets uh it made me jump when the first time I watched this movie. And actually last night too. Yeah I forgot about it.
SPEAKER_10Shit.
SPEAKER_03I thought that I thought that was really, really, really good. Uh because jump scares, like, I don't I don't like when like it's obvious it's coming and like you know it's about to come, but like when it just out of blue and you're not realizing Resident Evil Flashback to Resident Evil, call back to Resident Evil, which I saw in Failures recently, has a lot has a couple jump scares that they blend into the movie. You don't see it coming, it just happens and it just gets you, and it got us all three of us every single time. Uh I think three three really good ones in the movie, just so you know. But I like I like when directors are able to do that, and it's just not some obvious bullshit that you know, like with the music and then just like woo, here I am, you know, type of thing. So but that's it. That's my favorite kills and scares of this movie. Right back at you, Derek.
SPEAKER_04There is another one I I just want to touch on real quick. No, no, you had your time, motherfucker.
SPEAKER_03All right. We have to move on. You skipped over me.
SPEAKER_04And I spoke of it a little bit, but it was it was a moment of like a jump, like a jump scare and a kill. But it was when Morris was talking about how his brother was one of the victims, and uh he was saying how he he ripped his jaw off of his face. And you know, we're just we're just sitting, we're just sitting in this, you know, shitty bar, just having a conversation, not expecting anything else to happen. And to get that jump cut to his brother just face getting absolutely rearranged, and blood and and you know, all the all the gore just dripping off was uh uh a jump scare and a gnarly kill. So, you know, we got a two for one with that moment. So I just wanted to highlight that as well before we get into finally cut. And this is where I discuss the ending of the film, and then we give our ratings of one to five stabs. One stab, no redeeming value, two stabs bad, three stabs mediocre, four stabs good, five stabs, MFN masterpiece. Now, Matt, you are about to witness the greatness that is Roger on the fly as he does interpretive dancing to my final cut.
SPEAKER_03I do interpretations now of Derek describing the movie.
SPEAKER_11Nice.
SPEAKER_04All right. After a flashback reveals that Skye caused Paul's death by intentionally crashing the car during a drug-induced argument. Sky awakens at a retreat and argues with Elizabeth over the upcoming tour. Suddenly, Elizabeth smiles, smashes a mirror, and fatally stabs herself with a shard. Skye attempts to leave, but to her horror, realizes that it is he and that it is she who has stabbed Elizabeth. She attracts attention from the hospital workers, and Joshua, when seen covered in blood, but she escapes the retreat and reunites with Gemma. Stealing a car, they go to meet Morris. She receives a call from the real Gemma and realizes that the Gemma who's in the vehicle with her and with whom she spent the entire week is the entity. After regaining control of the car, Skye meets Morris at the abandoned pizza hut where he plans to use the walk-in freezer to prevent prevent brain damage when stopping her heart. Morris temporarily leaves, and the entity appears as Sky's former self from the car wreck. After a struggle, she fights it off and injects herself with a syringe meant to stop her heart. Unfazed, the entity mockingly affirms that Skye is not in control. Sky then finds herself on stage for her opening tour performance at the Herald Square Garden. She sees as still alive Elizabeth watching from the audience and realizes the entire day had been an illusion. The entity appears as Sky's current self before tearing its stomach open and showing its true form: a giant, skinless, semi-humanoid creature with multiple smiling mouths on its body. You could just duck Roger.
SPEAKER_11Jesus duck. Or go out of frame. Come on. There you go.
SPEAKER_04I saw you miming it. I was gonna be it'd be easier if we just left. All right.
SPEAKER_03So sweating, Derek.
SPEAKER_04Come on, that's it's not Sky screams and falls into a trance before the entity possesses her. Now smiling menacingly, Skye fatally smashes herself in the eye with her microphone in front of thousands of horrified spectators. The end. What did we think of the ending of Smile 2? Matt, feelings on it.
SPEAKER_12I actually did like the ending. I thought it was kind of cool. I thought it was nice having, you know, that scene where you don't see her actually bludging her eye out with the microphone. You just see the audience in horror of what's going on. And then, you know, then she's on the ground with a with a mic in her eye. So I thought I thought the ending was really cool. And then even more cool is you know, the the theme of this movie or whatever is that you have to, you know, you have to kill in front of you know the entity out, you have to kill in front so the entity goes into somebody else. Well, now we've got a whole audience of people, thousands of people that seen this, you know, this death. So does that mean now that we've got you know thousands of these uh infected people out there? And how long is this thing gonna go on? Are we gonna have decades of smiles movies? So um, but I did like the ending. I thought it was well done. I thought I liked it. I like the transition into real life, so it was cool. Yeah. Nice.
SPEAKER_04Roger, what about you? How'd you feel about the ending of the film?
SPEAKER_03I liked it. I liked that uh it opens it up for number three. You know, now it's on a bigger stage. Yeah, no pun intended. Uh, but uh uh yeah, it was it was it wrapped it up nice of the story we're we were following along. Uh sucks uh to be sky. Uh sucks to be sky. Sucks to be sky, took it took took one to the eye. Uh eye shot, baby. You know, fuck. Yeah, at least it was just one, right?
SPEAKER_04Not the card you want.
SPEAKER_03No, no. Uh but uh, you know, now everyone, everyone's in fact. It kind of reminds me of in a way the ending to the first ring movie where they kind of uh return the tape to like the video store, and like now like some random person's just gonna watch it and it could, you know, go bigger and just keep spreading. And like this, now everyone's seen it and it's like fuck. You know, but they don't know, no one knows about it, right? So like most of these people are just gonna die and just in front of other people and it's just gonna keep spreading and spreading and spreading like like you know, like an STD in a way. You know, uh shout out to uh It Folllows because that's that storyline.
SPEAKER_04But uh we gotta get that on the podcast, we gotta cover that.
SPEAKER_03I know the sequel's coming out soon. They just finished they just wrapped it up the other day. I saw very cool. Um excited for that one. I really like that movie too. But um, yeah, yeah, the ending was good. It wraps up nice and tight, bow. You know, Sky Story is finished, and we'll continue along. But her music will live on, just like dude.
SPEAKER_04You gotta get that record. You're the record man.
SPEAKER_03I will, I will. I have the smile one sound uh score. I don't think I have two yet. I have to grab it from Waxwork Records.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Alright, so I thought the ending was fantastic. Uh, it showed that Sky was helpless all along and that whatever the curse wants, it gets. And like Matt, you said with you know, all the people in the audience, like what does that mean for the next movie? Like, did they all get infected? Are we gonna have like a horde of infected people running around like with this murderous entity coming at them? So, or you know, is it just gonna be one person? Who knows? So uh I have I have relegated myself to not trying to anticipate what uh Parker Finn is going to do with his next movies. So I I'm just I'm open to wherever he takes it. But I thought the ending was super cool. I enjoyed it a lot.
SPEAKER_03The only way you can defeat this thing is if like in the first movie, you just have to lock yourself away from like everybody because you have to do it in front of somebody. So if you don't ever in front of people, it you won't take your own life. So you could just live in isolation the entire entire time, you'll be fine.
SPEAKER_04But Rose tried to do that in the last film.
SPEAKER_03But but the guy showed up, the boyfriend.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know, but like she locked she locked everything and all that, but uh Joel still got inside.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, then he was trying to force her out because he because she she had the right idea to do where you just gotta like just look like Matt is in the woods by himself. He'd be fine if Matt was affected right now. He's part of nature now, man. He just just him and him and the tree.
SPEAKER_04Let's not forget that someone did beat this. It was that uh Robert Talley from the first one, the guy that Rose went to talk to when he he was in jail because he murdered someone, and that's where Joel got the idea. So there is one person in this universe that is alive still. So I wonder if he comes back.
SPEAKER_03I would much rather be dead than have to spend the rest of my life in prison. So I would rather like fuck it at this point. Just let it just let it take me.
SPEAKER_04All right. So yeah, let's let's get into our stabs. Matt, what do you stab?
SPEAKER_12Smile to so I wouldn't say it was like the worst movie ever. Um, and it wasn't like that bad. Um, so I I'm gonna give it a solid three. Um, I wish there was more. Four's a little too gracious, in my opinion, so I'm gonna stick with a three. That's solid.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh Raj, what about you? The Raj.
SPEAKER_03I gave it four stabs or four smiles. Which way you want to look at it. But I like it. Uh, it's it's a good one. I like the series so far. Um, I'm excited to see where they if they make or I'm I'm sure they will make a third one where it where it goes.
SPEAKER_04Um, if my pros were any kind of indication of how this would go, I love everything about this movie. I and I think it's it's bulletproof. And like I said, with the open-endedness and what it could mean for the future of this franchise, I'm excited for. So I went with five stabs. Wowie. Yeah. That's a lot of stabs. It's my first five stabs for this year. I had a couple last year, but first for this year.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it is, I believe.
SPEAKER_04All right, so that's our thoughts on Smile 2. Let's get our fans' thoughts. Next section is Voices from Beyond. And this is where I go through our social media and uh collect all your thoughts on it. So, first up off of Facebook is Quinlan D. And Quinlan says, with this and caveat, you recently picked two of the movies on our spooky cinema list for 2026. For anyone who doesn't know, Quinlan joined us before on an episode. But him and his uh wife do uh 30 30 horror films for 30 days for October, and they post it up every day, and it looks like uh caveat and this is on his list. So when he speaks of spooky cinema list for 2026, that's what he's talking about. So if you guys want to go follow Quinlan on Instagram, but Lisa Lisa and I do the same thing.
SPEAKER_03We do 30 for 30 in October. Yep, we get we'll make our list soon.
SPEAKER_04Very nice. But he goes on to say, I'll have to backtrack and listen after we get to them in the coming weeks. So Quinlan will be checking that out in a little bit. Next up, we have Matt F. Matt says to prepare for this movie, I watched the first installment of the franchise and really liked it. So I was looking forward to Smile too. However, I was not expecting so much since it was a sequel. Boy, were my expectations wrong. I love this movie from the very beginning to the end. Naomi Scott was amazing as Sky Riley, and I don't think that I can say anything bad about this film. I just might give this one five mics to the eyes out of five, and I will. I can't wait until the third installment, ellipses. So Matt, Matt, I think knows something.
SPEAKER_03We we've uh we've had some bangers all of a sudden, like some uh some fan fan phase in the last few episodes. Yes.
SPEAKER_04Awesome. Uh also uh from Facebook, we have Lisa R.
SPEAKER_03Ooh, the beautiful and talented Lisa R. And very voluptuous. Let's just point that out.
SPEAKER_10Should big boobies very voluptuous, is that what you said?
SPEAKER_03Yes, should big boobies.
SPEAKER_10I know what that means.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, big boobies.
SPEAKER_10What does that mean?
SPEAKER_03Big boobies.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, big boobies. All right. So Lisa R goes on to say Smile 2 takes everything that worked in the first movie and cranks it up. More disturbing imagery, more psychological torment, and definitely more quote, what the hell did I just watch? Unquote. Naomi Scott absolutely carries this movie. Her performance makes the descent into paranoia, fear, and psychological chaos feel genuinely intense, and the movie does a good job blurring the line between what's real and what's happening inside her head. There are some great scares and some seriously messed up sequences, but the movie occasionally leans a little too heavily into the shock factor. Some of the twists become easier to anticipate, and the runtime feels a bit too long in places. Still, when Smile 2 wants to be creepy, it delivers. There are several scenes that will probably stick with me for a while, and that creepy smile is somehow even more unsettling when you know exactly what it means. Overall, a solid horror sequel with a fantastic lead performance, some genuinely disturbing. Moments and enough insanity to make the theater experience good. Also, love that it does pick up after the story plot of one. Lisa gives it 3.5 out of five stabs.
SPEAKER_03So maybe the back injury wasn't from the accent at all. It's from her carrying the entire film.
SPEAKER_10Good call.
SPEAKER_04Good call. We're sorry, Sky Riley, that you had to carry 100% of this movie. And it fucked your back up. All right. So our last comment is off of Instagram. And it actually comes from uh Kevin W at splitplug.art. And they uh make a ton of t-shirts. They actually I'm wearing oh, nice.
SPEAKER_03The crushed ice shirt. I like that one.
SPEAKER_04Uh this shirt says Jason prefers his ice crushed. Damn right, you know. So yeah, uh, for anyone who likes horror teas, go follow split uh splitplug.art on Instagram. But uh Kevin goes to say uh an almost perfect sequel that improves on the original. Naomi Scott was incredible, and that is our voices from beyond. So thank you to everyone who contributed this week. We truly do appreciate it.
SPEAKER_03And thanks for not turning the movie off for the first in the first five minutes and thinking that it sucks.
SPEAKER_04Like because of one cut of the dead one cut of the dead.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, dude, go back and watch the rest of it. Supposed to be that way.
SPEAKER_04We have to stay past the 27 minutes. Yes. Yes. Uh next section is lose eggs. And this is where if we have any uh fun facts or lasting thoughts, we bring it here. Roger, I'll throw it to you first. Do you have anything you want to share here?
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, I didn't expect you to go here first. Go back. No, not too much. I just I I like this. I like this one. Uh will we ever defeat this entity? Who knows? I hope not. Probably not. Uh long as it makes money, we won't. Uh forever may it rain. Good overall fun, fun movie. Um, you know, and and the the concept of it so just simple, but it works so so well. And uh, you know, shout out to the director. Yeah, uh, what's his face? Parker Finn. Parker Finn.
SPEAKER_04His parents, his parents, when he was born, called him what's his face.
SPEAKER_03Yes. But that's it. That's it for me. Nothing, nothing, nothing too crazy on my end.
SPEAKER_04Matt, did you have any fun facts or anything you wanted to bring for this section?
SPEAKER_12Briefly looked up some stuff real quick while we were talking about it. So uh yeah, Naomi Scott actually performed Sky Riley's music. Um the uh filmmaker didn't just have her pretend to be a pop singer. Scott recorded and performed the original songs created for Sky, including New Brain, Grieve You, Blood on White Satin, and Death Me. Um, the music was released as a real soundtrack EP, Roger, helping make Sky feel like an actual pop artist rather than simply a character in a horror movie. Um I could go on, Derek, if you want, but I got one more. I'll do one more. Yeah, do one more. Um Parker Finn deliberately designed Smile 2 so that Sky and the audience gradually lose their ability to determine what's real. By the final portion, some scenes some scenes were thought were genuinely happen happening and revealed to have been hallucinations created by the entity. But we already knew that. That was a dumb one, so whatever. All right, of course, the last one's gotta be stupid. Are you alright?
SPEAKER_03I saw you pound your pound your chest there. Are you are you are you having a heart attack?
SPEAKER_04Someone take me, Elizabeth. Take me Elizabeth. Is that Randy Savage?
SPEAKER_12No, that's from uh what's that show? Um The Jeffersons.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I was completely in a different area. Yeah, whatever. Anyways, I'm old. So I got some fun facts. Um, this goes hand in hand with our last film, but the opening scene was filmed in like a one-shot sequence where it was, in fact, several takes digitally stitched together. Uh, Kyle Gollner did perform his own stunts for that sequence, though. But throwback to one cut where that opening 27 minutes, I think it was, Roger, was was a straight one cut. We kind of had a uh a scene like that, but obviously they stitched it together. But uh just wanted to highlight that. Naomi Scott said she modeled Sky Riley after Lady Gaga. Furthermore, when she's scrolling through her contacts to find Gemma's phone number, you can see Gaga above Gemma's contact. So there was a couple there was a bunch of people in her contacts. If you if you pause the screen, you funny. I think Conan was on there. Uh uh, yeah, Drew Barrymore, anyways.
SPEAKER_03Um Lewis, Lewis, Lewis, Lewis was in there.
SPEAKER_04Get there, Lewis.
SPEAKER_03They're they went to high school together.
SPEAKER_04I know they're high school buddies.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right. Next up, I have uh Naomi Scott co-wrote several of Sky Riley's songs with producer Alexis Kesselman. Uh, a little bit of a nod to what Matt had talked about her performing the songs. Um, she worked with the producer uh to create some of those. I thought that was cool. But uh writer-director Parker Finn confirmed plans to continue the series with the third film, stating, we've maybe only scooped a single glass of water out of the ocean. I think it's really fun to imagine a lineage of smile movies where each one become more becomes more off the rails than the previous one. Uh, in December, it was reported that Smile 3 was in the works and it was set to start filming last year. But I have an update because I went and looked on my own. I didn't just rely on IMBD, but we have a release date for fall of 2027. So Smile 3 will be out next fall, so almost a year from now. So that's exciting for us. Um another fun fact, uh, Parker Finn makes a cameo in this film as the photographer in the photo shoot scene where Sky is wearing all the chain mail stuff. I think I talked about uh he type he kept asking her, I need more. So uh Parker Finn made a made a cameo in his own movie. That's cool.
SPEAKER_03Was he photographing or is he directing this at that moment for more? He was doing both.
SPEAKER_04He was doing both, yeah. Multitasking. He was it was very meta, it was very meta moment. Uh uh something fun that I found. Uh, are you guys fans of the Hamilton musical?
SPEAKER_03I've never seen Hamilton, but I had a chance to see it in previews on Broadway when it first came out, but I chose to go see Finny Neverland instead, which at this point was a poor choice by me. Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_04No, Hamilton's Matt, you've seen Hamilton, haven't you? I haven't. Oh shit. Okay. So this one's just for me then. For any fans of Hamilton, uh, John Raw, who played uh Anton the choreographer, he also stars as General Lee and Lee Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. So congratulations to me on saying Lee Manuel Miranda's name without butchering it too much because that's a tongue twister. Show is Joe is. He did it, baby. Uh, I I thought he looked familiar, and I was like, is he is he General Lee from Hamilton? And sure enough, show enough, he was. Uh, another fun fact, uh, the abandoned building that Morris takes Sky to to quote unquote kill her is an actual abandoned pizza hut in Ellenville, New York.
SPEAKER_03Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's an actual pizza hut.
SPEAKER_03Ellenville, that that's not far from where I used to live, I don't think.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03You were in Jersey.
SPEAKER_04Weren't you in New Jersey?
SPEAKER_03No, I was in New York. Oh, I thought Orange County, New York. They filmed, they filmed uh quite a few movies in that area. Yeah. Uh George Clooney, I remember when they filmed, I forget the name of it. The one where he was like a lawyer trying to battle a big business. Uh what name of that one? It was from Dustel Don. Clayton. Michael Michael Clayton. Michael Clayton the movie Michael Clayton was filmed in that what it was filmed around where I lived. Oh it was always in the newspaper that George Clooney was in the area. Uh Tu Wong Fu. Oh. Uh thing Sorry. Hello. Parts of that was filmed in where I used to live. Um other things. But yeah, the area gets uh some some play every now. It's a beautiful area, it's mountainous. Like it looks like what we see how it looks like behind Matt right now. That's what the area kind of looks like, what the area kind of looks like. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So all right.
SPEAKER_03Nice.
SPEAKER_04And that's it. That's all I got for loose ends. Uh that takes us to the end of our episode talking about smile too. And next up, we need to replace it on the wheel, and that is in our section wheel of death. And uh first, I need to go to our master list, but before I do that, let me share my screen with y'all. How you guys doing? Talk amongst yourselves.
SPEAKER_12How's work going, Roger?
SPEAKER_03It's going good, it's going good, Matt. How's uh how's your new business going?
SPEAKER_12It's going uh pretty fantastic. There's a lot of people that need rides places.
SPEAKER_03That's good. That's good for you.
SPEAKER_12Yeah, yeah, it is good for me.
SPEAKER_04All right, so uh you guys can stop talking.
SPEAKER_10How do I spin it, Derek? How do I spin it? You don't touch anything. You said it's not working.
SPEAKER_04All right, so this is our master list in which we pull all the movies off of. So we need to replace smile two on the wheel, and it's time to spin our master list. Are you guys ready? Spin it. All right, here we go. Ooh, and we've landed on Friday the 13th, part three, which is a viewer submission. Uh I just would have to look it up on my sheet, and I'm not doing that right now. So let's put Friday the 13th, part three. Roger, we watched this together.
SPEAKER_03We did it in in 3D, baby. They have uh 3D TV and glasses in the at home here. So very cool, which looks really, really good in 3D. I like watching Derek. You hit two. It's part three.
SPEAKER_04Did I hit oh Jesus? Thank you, Roger. You're welcome.
SPEAKER_03I'm here for the attention to the details.
SPEAKER_12That's here for Roger. This pro this podcast could probably not survive without Roger.
SPEAKER_03No, it's gone off the rails so many times today with just it'd just be Derek by himself.
SPEAKER_12Shouting into a void, zooming in cameras and all right, guys.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna read off the 10 movies before we spin this bad boy. Are y'all ready?
SPEAKER_03Ready, good all right.
SPEAKER_04So uh first movie on the wheel, we have Video Drome. Ooh. Next we have Planet Terror. After that is Terrified. Next up is one of my movies, A Bay of Blood. And then we have Body Bags.
SPEAKER_10After that, Ice T. Yes, what'd you say? Body bags, isn't that starring ice tea? I don't know, is that an ice tea song? I think it is. Oh, that's body count. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_12Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_04All right, dad. All right. Um, next up we have The Orphanage. After that is Brain Scan, followed by Together. Next up, we got a Roger movie, the coffee table.
SPEAKER_03Oh god, I want it so bad. I know you do. It's so fucked up.
SPEAKER_04And then finishing off our Wheel of Death, we have Friday the 13th, part three. Yes, all right. Everything looks to be in order. Are you boys ready to chant? Yes. All right, guys, it's time to spin the wheel. Ready? One, two, three. Wheel. Oh wheel. Next up is a Derek pick. Back to back. Back to back. Who would have thought? But we have a bay of blood. Roger, can you find out where that's playing at?
SPEAKER_03I know it's on shutter because I saw it on there recently, but let me bring it up on the old list here. It's something I've never seen before. So I'm excited for that. It's a 1971 Mario Baba.

SPEAKER_12So here's what I think. Oh, that's a good one for smile too. That's Lily.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh Roger's here. Oh, Roger's here.
SPEAKER_04Pump. So we watched this movie called uh One Cut of the Dead. And the one lady in it was doing self-defense classes, and nice. It was a it's a uh she would throw her arms up and yell pump.
SPEAKER_02You had to say pump. Pump? Pom. Palm. Like palm of your hand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Palm. Pom. Whatever. Whatever. Let's see.
SPEAKER_03Can you hear me or no?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can hear you.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02What's up, Roger Dodger?
SPEAKER_03Hey Matt, how are you?
SPEAKER_02Looking good, buddy.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, I'm a few minutes behind. A little long. Is that your bowling shirt, dude? Yes. There's no there's no time. No time for that. I literally just locked in the house like 15 minutes ago. We have no time for this. I don't even have a background. Hold on. I think my background. Hold on. Yeah, I know, I know.
SPEAKER_04Matt's stuck in the grass. Yeah. I'm hiding. You ever see that movie Ants? Oh, never mind. You changed it.
SPEAKER_11No, not again.
SPEAKER_12But that's never been done before.
SPEAKER_03Just floating away. There it is. Ooh. Not for the faint of heart. It's the monster. It is.
SPEAKER_04It sure is. Matt with a picture of Matt in his background. Matt on Matt. Alright. Is everyone set? Is that what you have? Roger. That looks good. Yeah. Monster's about to eat your face.
SPEAKER_03Let me zip this all the way down. Oh, there you go. Oh shit. Yeah. All right. That's nice. A little more conservative. There we go. Conservative. All right. Alright, I gotta change my little wording thing from POM, even though you don't see it anymore.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, kind of, yeah, especially with that white frame around it. Matt, did you you haven't you didn't happen to check out our last episode, have you?
SPEAKER_11I did not.
SPEAKER_10What? Why didn't you? Why not?
SPEAKER_11Whatever this is, I have no idea. Okay. Stupid forest. Yeah. Look like you're out hiking. Yeah. I love to hike. Let's just keep it. I don't give a shit. Whatever.
SPEAKER_03I should wear some camo and look like you're hunting.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you're wearing green, so it's pretty close.
SPEAKER_03Those are your mother phone.
SPEAKER_04For the for the guns.
SPEAKER_12You're making fun of me, man. God damn.
SPEAKER_03That's what we do on the show.
SPEAKER_12I just, I just, I haven't seen you in so long. Yeah. And already you're you're you're making fun of me. Not cool, bro. All right, Derek, let's start this bullshit.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
unknownBoop.
SPEAKER_03You should rate this up. You need to rate this with the old uh not safe for work sticker on this episode because of the sexiness of these three men. It's not gonna be safe for any women. Listen to this thing or watch it.
SPEAKER_04It can't be contained. Not for kids. It cannot be contained and it should not be consumed. Duplicated. Yeah, it's just gonna spread like the smile disease. People are gonna murder themselves because they can't take it. Too hot.
SPEAKER_10They're too attractive. Too much. Too sexy. Too sexy. I'm at the beach, just relaxing. Are you still recording? I thought you were done recording.
SPEAKER_04I haven't ended it yet.
SPEAKER_03These are for these are the blooper times.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, blooper times. Yeah, blooper reels. Our beginning to our beginning stuff, and right now are blooper reels.
SPEAKER_12Alright. Well, thanks, guys. I appreciate it. That was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_03That was cool. I'm gonna go feed my dogs now and eat eat something. I haven't eaten anything all day.
SPEAKER_12Same here.
SPEAKER_03Before I went bowling.
SPEAKER_04I told I told Ian we would order pizza.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I ordered pizza last night. Yeah. I'm having chili. I made chili. What toppings are you getting?
SPEAKER_12On Derek's pizza. I don't know, Derek, what toppings are you getting? Are you asking?
SPEAKER_03You're the one getting the pizza. I don't know.
SPEAKER_12So eat toppings under chili. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_03No, no, there is toppings for chili. Okay. All right.
SPEAKER_12Once I set it, once I said it. Okay. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, yeah. We'll probably get half of it with like green peppers uh and just pepperoni because that's what Ian likes, and then the other half will probably be meat lovers.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. I bet you can say one half just green pepper. I was like, that's the most boring sounding pizza I've ever heard in my life. Just cheese sounds more exciting. Yeah, no, I got peppers. I got pepperoni and mushroom on mine yesterday.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I hate mushrooms. Carrie likes mushrooms and I like mushrooms.
SPEAKER_03Love me some mushrooms.
SPEAKER_04I like mushrooms.
SPEAKER_12I should have some black olive on it, too. I'm gonna bail. I gotta get going. So appreciate you guys. Thank you so much. Yep. And uh Roger, it's always a pleasure looking at you.
SPEAKER_03Back at you, brother.
SPEAKER_12Alright, guys. You guys have a great day. You too. Peace.
SPEAKER_03Peace. Peace. Look at all the trains. I like the trains. Is he frozen? Matt. Matt, are you frozen? Matt Blink if you if you're frozen. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Matt, have you been overtaken by the entity?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02He's gonna smile at us soon. He's seriously frozen.
SPEAKER_03No, he's frozen. He didn't even laugh at that.
SPEAKER_04There goes Matty Cakes. Bye Matty Cakes.
SPEAKER_03Bye Maddie Cakes.
SPEAKER_04All right. Cool. This uh two hours, 20 minutes, but I started recording like 20 minutes before.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. This one's this one seemed a little faster, a little shorter. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_04I believe it or not, I actually cut out a portion of my prose. There was two scenes I highlighted that I was like, you know what? Let's just keep this going.
SPEAKER_03I've like this entire podcast, just Derek talking about how much he loves Smile 2. This is before an hour, 45 minutes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I was just like, it's fine. I don't have to go into minute detail. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03But spoiler alert for the best of 2026, Resident Evil is probably gonna be top three, if not number one, on that list. Oh, you're good. So early fucking good. That fun. Bringing in. It's uh you can watch this one. It's not like anything super uh crazy. It's just resident evil. If you if ever played the games, then he's fine. It's not any more violent or uh there's no boobies or anything any nudity or anything like that. There's some you know, it says F word a few times, but okay. Whatever. But it's it's fun. It's it's definitely fun. There's kids are in the movie, they get fucking destroyed. Yeah, so it's it's awesome.
