Worship Week Wins And New Life

Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Unsexy Church Podcast. It's a podcast ministry of First Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida, where our mission is to help you connect to a thriving life in Christ. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, Darren. How are we doing? Doing good. Doing really good. Man, we've had some exciting things going on. Um, been uh uh it's been been a week, been a week. Um the debate is finally settled about what the best week of the year is. There's been an ongoing debate between uh VBS, worship week, and Thrive Camp, which is the best week of the year. Finally, uh it was settled this week. It's worship week, because Pastor Bob, you had something super exciting happen.

Yes, our our uh grandson was born during the best week of the year.

Although technically Ben would point out to you that it started after it was started the week after technically a week of seven days, and we didn't start until Monday, and that Sunday is still part of worship week. Okay, so that's worship week was really good.

The kids did awesome on Sunday. They they did a really good job leading in worship. And Harris Edward Bloch was born on Saturday night, so early Sunday morning. So we're excited for Ben and Maddie and brand new grandson. Super cool. Yeah, yeah.

That's that's so awesome. Yeah, we did. We had a we just we've been anticipating that birth now for 42 weeks. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. She went a little long. Went a little long, but man, it what a what a great day. What a great day. Um, so we're excited about that. We're excited about that for you guys. Um, and we did, we had a great, great worship week that this year. I think we had a little over 30 kids, um probably two-thirds of them middle schoolers, which was a change for for us, which was uh honestly had me a little worried when I started seeing the registration. Sure. I thought, oh boy, what are we gonna do? But man, they uh they they grabbed it, they took ownership, they just did a fantastic job this year uh leading us through worship. We spent a lot of time in uh John chapter four, looking at the woman at the well, uh culminating for us anyway with the um the idea of worshiping in spirit and truth, our our whole body, uh not just going through outward motions, but our our inner heart being bowed to submission to to to the Lord. Um they worked on three brand new songs for us anyway. Um the the band learned them, the vocals learned them. We we had AVL folks, we had social media folks doing stuff, we had a ton of adult volunteers helping us out. And so it was just it was a great, it was good, it was good. It was fantastic.

They did really well. It wasn't one of those where you go, oh, that's really nice. The kids were up there. Yeah. They did, they did really no, they they legitimately they sounded great, they did great in their skits.

They just it was really, really good. Yeah, we had drama, yeah. Part of it. We had drama, not not any not the bad kind, no bad drama. No bad drama, only good drama, man. It was great. All right, so we've got uh today's June 30th.

Niagara Tightrope Fun Fact

We normally do these on Monday, which would be the 29th, but today we're recording on Tuesday, the 30th. Um, I've got a fun fact for you guys.

Oh boy, let's Jordan, let's see how fun it is today. Here we go. Here comes our fun fact.

French acrobat, Jean Franco. How do you say that? Francois. Francois. Jean Francois. You asked the Belgian guy how to speak French. His stage name was Blondon. Oh, I know this one. Became the first person to walk across Niagara Falls on a tight rope. Oh, the rope was like 170 feet in the air, and it spanned it, you know, the length was over 1,100 feet or about 1100 feet. That's crazy. That's long, man. But there's a really cool thing that he did. Uh he he entertained folks. Uh what do you do you know what he did? Mid-crossing? Handstand? No. That's not, I mean, maybe he did, but the thing he's famous for is he he cooked an omelet way across. He made an omelet, mid-crossing, to entertain thousands of spectators below. So that's your fun fact of the day. You might have thought I would have gonna go somewhere else uh with my fun fact, because there is a big holiday coming up. That was smooth.

And so it was running on his cue right there. Yeah, I was I was so focused on what that was. He was enraptured in your celebrities.

Oh, really? He was so in July 4th. July 4th, which I mean, I know I give you a hard time about being French, but I mean the U.S. is grateful for the French uh back in the day, you know, Lafayette. Man, we uh it's our nation's birthday, right? And it's not just any birthday, it's uh 250th uh birthday. What's there's a word for that? What's that?

Oh bicentennial is 200. That's 200. Oh, I should have looked it up. I used to I don't know had it.

So while you're looking that up, didn't Blondin also like push a wheelbarrow across? He probably did. He probably was the guy that said, Who how many of you believe I can do this? And they're all cheering, yeah. You can do it, you can do it. He's like, all right, great, get in the wheelbarrow. Exactly. Nobody would get in the wheelbarrow. We believe you can do it, oh do you?

He probably did. Yeah, he probably is the same guy. Um I want to know, he says he's the first one to do it successfully. Were there some before that had attempted unsuccessfully?

Wheelbarrow across 1100 foot rope. Gosh, that's crazy. 160 feet above the water. Ooh, let's see. Because walking was not enough. It mentions uh maybe he did the the omelet in the wheelbarrow. Oh okay, okay, okay. And oh, by the way, people have died trying to tightrope across. Okay, well, there you go. There's the connection to somebody. There's always a connection. Somebody.

Always somebody. What are you looking up? I hear it is. Okay. I don't know if I can pronounce it. First, first of all, I'm dyslexic and I mix letters up. So semi quincential. That sounds right. Semi-quincential. That's 250 years, man. 250 years. Aren't you glad you're an American? I am. I am. Aren't you, Jordan? Oh, wait. Not yet. I'm not yet. He's working on it, though. He is. He is working on it. He's legal. Oh man. In case anybody's wondering out there. Oh gosh, this is getting off the rails quickly.

Can Christians Be Patriotic

Um, man, we uh so yeah, we've got a huge uh a huge holiday this this coming week weekend, which you know I think has brought uh a lot of people are asking questions, you know, and and we can get into debates about Christian nationalism and and all those kind of things, but we just kind of wanted to briefly just kind of touch on is it is it okay to be patriotic and a in a Christian? Is that is that all right?

You want my long answer or my short answer?

Charlotte was short, well, if your short answer is just yes or no, uh we need some explanation. Give me uh give us a little bit more than a yes or no.

The the short answer is yes. It is perfectly fine to be patriotic. For sure. Um the longer answer is as long as you have the proper perspective. Wow. What do you mean? So we recognize that as Christ followers, we are citizens of heaven primarily, and we are just sojourning passing through this world. And so we have to have that biblical worldview, that eternal worldview, that we live for the eternal, not for the temporary. Um but there's absolutely nothing wrong with being patriotic about our country. Romans chapter 13 tells us to honor those who are in authority over us until they tell us to do something that dishonors the the one who has ultimate authority. So I think it's altogether right. I I'm very patriotic. I still get goosebumps when I hear the national anthem. I still root for the USA team to go far into the World Cup and beat Belgium. Beat Belgium. Beat Belgium. You know, hopefully they'll get that shot. Yeah. But yeah, no, there's nothing wrong. Now, you mentioned Christian nationalism. I I think that's a phrase that gets thrown out there that nobody can define. Right.

Not well, they're putting their own definitions to it right now.

Right. And but that's not what we're talking about. We're just talking about a believer being proud to be a part of this country.

Yeah.

There's not there's nothing wrong with that.

You know, I think it's it's altogether right um to thank God um for being born in whatever country you're you're born in. Um I can I can be thankful to be born in the United States of America. Um you know, Paul exercises his rights as a Roman citizen, you know, in the book of in the book of Acts. And so um I think in a lot of a lot of people in our world today will they almost, you know, because they take this term Christian nationalism and make their own definition with it, they'll almost paint it as sinful to be patriotic, to to be thankful for the blessings of being in the United States of America. Um and I think that's that's part of the perspective, understanding that we uh um we are who we are, where we are, only because of the grace of God. Um only because of his providence and his sovereignty, and just as easily as he is ra he raises kings up and he and he pushes kings down. And so uh just keeping that in in perspective, as you said. You know, we are heavenly citizens first. We are Christians who happen to be American. We're not Americans who happen to be Christians.

And so And being patriotic does not mean you automatically agree with everything that happens in your country. You you don't just give a blank check and say, well, whatever, we're Americans, we can do whatever. That's not at all what patriotism is.

Yeah, and there's a there's still the understanding that no matter what nationality you are, what country you are, every single person is made in the the image of God. And so um we you we need to understand that and we we know that. And again, we don't think that um I mean, I've got to be careful here. We don't think Americans are better than anyone else. Every single person is uh is made in the image of God with dignity and worth and value. And God has placed people in their times, in their places, in his sovereignty, and and it's okay to recognize that and even celebrate that. Yeah. Um I would say, I don't know, man. Let me ask you this. What are you gonna do for 4th of July?

It's a Saturday night, so very little, honestly. Very little. Sunday morning's coming, so you know, and I've never been a I've never been a shootoff fireworks kind of guy. I enjoy watching them. I've just not been one to go out in the backyard and do that, but I'm not against it. I'm just not not sure.

So Mandy and I have never really been the fireworks people. Now, do I like I like watching things blow up? And I'm I'm I'll be honest. He's from Missouri. I do like that kind of stuff, right? I enjoy that. I like watching it. Um Mandy's scared of them, but then we both have the the joint uh sentiment of that's a lot of money going through this motion. I just like I'll let someone else do that and I'll watch it. But uh we'll probably stay. Well, um, yeah, I think we'll probably watch our at our house, man. We've got a they call it a lake, but it's a pond. And right now it's a little puddle. We've not had hardly any rain. I mean, it's like drying up. Fireworks over the puddle to drying up fast. And you I mean, usually that is a war zone out behind our house. I mean, they are just blowing the place up. And so we usually will just sit out there and watch those folks do that.

With your water hose available in case one of them lands. Yeah. Right. I enjoy a good professional fireworks display. Yeah. You know, that the probably the most patriotic one. We were we took the kids to uh vacation in Washington, D.C. And got to sit over in Arlington in the cemetery looking over the national mall. And that was pretty cool. That was really cool.

So yeah. You know, just another thought that crosses my mind as we think about this um couple things. Um I've got to travel a little, not a lot. I'm not a world traveler, but I've traveled internationally. Um and of the places that I've been internationally, they are beautiful and they're amazing. Um but man, I am so glad that I live in the United States of America because of the rights and the freedoms and even the standard of living that that has been afforded to us. Um I man, I'm thankful. I'm thankful. I wouldn't want to live anywhere anywhere else. I like to visit other places, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. And then that makes me think about the number of men and women who have shed blood and given their lives so we can. And uh man, I d I think it's okay to be thankful for those things. No, absolutely.

We mentioned the World Cup earlier, you know, thousands, millions of people are coming to the U.S. to observe the World Cup from different countries around the world. And there's so many media reports about how much they are loving the U.S. And they're saying the U.S. on media is different than the U.S. in person. Yeah, right. And when you get here, it's not at all what they what they're portraying.

Yeah, exactly. Yeah, so so interesting. It's interesting. Um, so July 4th for me always just means summer. And uh we are we're you know a third of the way into summer pretty much here.

Summer Pause With Ministry Plans

on. Um, we're gonna probably take a break from weekly podcast here in the summer on the Unsexy Church. We'll start back up mid-August uh as we get things you know ramped up and going back into full swing. That doesn't mean there's nothing going on here. There's a lot going on. We've just had an extremely busy June. I mean, first week of June was VBS, second week was SVC, third week was Centricid uh camp, fourth week was worship week. Uh we're getting ready to go into the July 4th holiday, and then just in a couple of weeks, Thrive Camp will be happen will be happening. But then we have a lot of other things coming up. So uh we just kind of want to talk about some of the things that we don't want you to miss out on this summer, things that will hopefully point you to Jesus and will help you uh thrive in your walk with Christ. Um so maybe like the first thing coming up is pretty quick here, July 7th.

Men’s Dinner And Local Missions

Um, we have a men's dinner. Um uh and it's kind of centered around one of our mission partners, the the Timothy Initiative. Um what's what is the Timothy Initiative? We don't have to give uh the whole thing, we're but just kind of brief.

Sure. It it is helping men come out of um issues in their lives, some in incarceration, some drug addiction, those kind of things, and rehabilitate them, help them get back into um a godly lifestyle, help them to to to walk with Christ. And so they're doing a great work. They they have a home, uh, they have a farm that they use. And so in a couple weeks, we're gonna go uh to the home and just have dinner with them and uh in an evening of Bible study, and then in the future we're gonna go out to their farm and do a a more broader thing. But this on the seventh, we're just getting men together to to talk about what that's gonna look like.

Talk about, pray about, plan it a little bit, right? Exactly. Just kind of get get us ready to to do the things. And that we had the director from the Timothy Initiative here at our men's breakfast a couple months ago, and it was uh it was a great, it was a great, great. I thought that seemed to really strike strike a chord with with with our men. And so I'm excited to see what God does there.

Encouraging our guys to come to both to that meeting on the seventh and then look for an opportunity to get involved with this ministry along the way. Exactly.

One thing I've just forgot to mention uh that happened in June as well, is we had a women's gathering um on the 20th. Just this last Saturday. Yeah, last Saturday. Um I mean it's been so crazy. I really haven't had a chance to talk to anybody, but they they had a I know they had a great registration, you know, as far as people registered that I'm so I'm sure they had a great turnout. Um that again, and there'll be other events for ladies coming up, so be on the lookout for that as well. Um we've got a several, you know, we've got Timothy Initiative, we've got several mission projects coming up um local with some of our local partners. Like what are what are some other things we've got coming up?

Uh one big one is in August with our Tampa Baptist Manor. Yeah, you know, the the um apartment we have apartment building we have for 55 plus um fixed income. Uh and so every year we go over and just uh encourage them and love them and have a dinner with them. Our guys do up a barbecue and we have some entertainment and just uh just let that group know that they're they're loved. Yeah. That's always a lot of fun.

It's just neat to to talk to those folks. And I think since we've been doing that three years. Um seems like we're we're gaining ground, uh gaining gospel ground over there. We've um we have a chaplain over there. We um you know, we seem to get more and more of those folks coming uh to our services. So I'm pretty excited about that.

Yeah, our members that that uh attend here and then of course live over there have really turned that into their mission field. Yeah. And they're really trying to reach their fellow apartment folks. And yeah. Uh Thomas, who you mentioned is the the chaplain, and Charlie, who's the administrator. Um both good men, both good godly men are doing a great job over there. So yeah.

Yeah, and that's I mean, that's just one thing if you want to be in prayer about. I mean, you we could pray about that mission field. There's a lot of people over there that need that need Jesus. And so you don't have to be a Baptist to live there. You don't have to be a Christian to live there. Not at all. And most of them are not. And so it's a it's a it's white under harvest, right? And so uh lots of stuff going on

Thrive Camp And Student Discipleship

over there. We mentioned uh earlier in July uh Thrive Camp's coming up, and that's one of our biggest weeks of the year for students, probably the biggest week of the year for students.

Ben would argue the best week. Yes, yes. I mean, although now that his son's been born, he might he might be swayed.

I think your son thinks differently. That's all I'm saying. You know, I'm on his son's side.

Um so Thrive Camp, we started back what five, six years ago now. It was during COVID because we we couldn't um there weren't camps going on, so we created our own. Yeah, and it's grown ever since then. And I think there are a dozen or more churches that are participating together with us now. Yep. Um they go up to the panhandle and spend some time there bringing a guest speaker and we always get solid, uh, strong, uh, great speakers, man.

Yeah. The the band that they have come is amazing, uh, solid guy as well. And so, man, that's that's always good.

Yeah, the kids always come back from that, just oh man. As you would expect from a summer camp. But it's it seems to be even more uh it it's not just let's go have fun. They have a great time, they write their own features, they do all kinds of fun things, but but it is just a week where they are just focused on on their walk with Christ.

Yeah, there's great teaching, there's time in the word. Um it's it's there's you know, a time of times of worship, but then also, like you said, just a lot of a lot of fun too. And so it's nice to get students away um from screens, from phones, from maybe even influences that uh that they don't need to be around and just help you know, help help point them to Jesus all all we all week long.

It's been interesting over the last few years to hear testimonies of students who say their first introduction to the church and to Christ was through Thrive Camp. Somebody invited them to come to Thrive Camp. And we've had the privilege of baptizing several kids then because of that. It's amazing. Yeah, really cool. Um they leave on the 12th, right? That's the 12th and the 16th. Yep. Y'all be in prayer for Thrive Camp as they travel up and as they're there. Yeah, it's a week from Sunday.

So coming up soon. What else do we have going on this summer?

Uh we got a big marriage retreat coming up in July. That's right. So that's the 24th. And the 25th.

Right. So that's Regan and Robin Miller.

Yeah. Correct. Regan was the student pastor here back when Trish Brenson was Trish Kendrick. So that's uh so it's been a little bit. Just a couple years ago. It's been a few years ago. But uh um he knows a lot of folks here. He uh he's got a lot of connections here. A lot of folks know him, love, love him. He um left here, became a missionary to Vietnam for for a few years. Now he's a pastor in Texas, I think Nassau Bay uh Baptist Church. And so we're I've had a lot of phone conversations with him. We got to meet him actually at the SBC. I'm pretty excited about about him coming.

What what's the structure of that look like? What what is the marriage when when I hear marriage retreat? Um my initial reaction is typically oh yeah, right. What what is it gonna look like?

Yeah, so this will be very, very laid back, very casual. Uh child care is provided. A couple will come. You don't have to be a couple if you're pursuing pursuing marriage or looking forward to marriage. Um you will uh you can come as well. But you'll come Friday night, uh, starts at six o'clock. Um we will um have a main session. There'll be a time of worship. There'll be some fun things that we do, some games. Um, nothing embarrassing, nothing weird. You know, some of those games get a little strange, but uh what we'll have main session teaching um on Friday night. Then we'll we'll have time um where you and your we'll give you and your spouse some homework to to do, um where you ask each other questions, answer just kind of more not really homework, but more conversation starters to help you kind of work through, talk through and process what was just talked about. Saturday, more of the same. Um you'll be there Saturday morning at nine. A light continental breakfast will be provided, a main session with with worship, with games, good teaching. Um we'll give you a lunch break. Uh, there'll be another break in between as well, but we'll give you a lunch break where you and your spouse will go and um again process what you've talked about. We'll give you some materials, some questions to kind of work through. You'll come back to some breakout sessions. We'll have a men's breakout, a women's breakout, um, and we'll do that and and then come back and have another main session, and then uh you'll have the evening again till eight o'clock uh to go out to dinner and uh again process what what what you've talked about, maybe uh maybe make goals, make make make plans, and then you have to come back pick your kids up at eight o'clock because we gotta get folks out of here so they can go to bed and come to church on Sunday morning. Right. So um it's gonna there's gonna be some giveaways, um some uh some prizes, uh, and we're just we're really gonna have a good a good time. It's gonna be fun.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so we're we've been looking, we've been playing this for a little bit, looking at this for a little while. A lot of people in our church have asked for it, and so um you'll you'll see a lot more about this coming up here really soon, probably this Sunday. Um we'll start talking about it more and more.

I've I forgot to mention back in July um or at the end of July, um, we have another opportunity to serve alongside one of our ministry partners, Walking with Warriors, where we host a luncheon for first responders, primarily police officers and sheriff's deputies. And um, and that's that's always exciting to be able to do that. And we just have them come by and feed them and love on them and just let them know how much we appreciate them. And we have so many volunteers for that every year. They really want to be a part of that. So that's the 31st, if I remember right.

Yep, yeah. Joy Club is gonna meet uh August 6th, I think I believe, is and so um that'll be a good time. That's always fun. Uh great food, great time. I think they're gonna we're gonna sing some and and I I think you have a guest speaker as well. So yeah, that's gonna be that's gonna be a lot of fun. If you're if you're 55 eligible for A R P you can come to Joy Club. I in Missouri there was a a group of young they called it next gen leaders or something like that. And the guy that was in charge of it would would say, if you're one year he'd say, you know, if you're 40 and under, you know, you're a next gen leader. Won't you come up? We'll pray for you. The next year he'd say, if you're 41 and under. Yeah. So I feel like that's kind of what Joy Club is if you're whatever my age is, right? Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, yeah. Uh so anyway, just unsexy church is going to take a break, but a little hiatus, but not ministry.

No, but FBC Tampa does not take a break. Yeah. Hey, before we before we finish, just as when we come back in August,

Fall Restart And Your Questions

right? Um, we resume Wednesday nights, August 12th, I think. Yeah. Um, and so that'll be a wana kicking back off. Our student ministry will continue. They they continue throughout the summer, but they'll just ramp up. They'll ramp up back into the school year. Uh, and then we have our discipleship classes for adults, and we're going to do something a little different.

Because you ask.

Right. So it it's just sessions where we respond to questions that of the folks of the church. You know, it could be a theological question, it could be a social question, whatever it may be. And then we'll have a teaching time, and then we'll sit around tables, multi-generational tables, and have some table discussion and then come back together to wrap it up.

Exactly.

And so it's good, it's gonna be a good time. Yeah, looking forward to that. I'm excited about that. I'm excited about what God's doing at FBC Tampa. We have new faces here every Sunday. Absolutely. And uh we I think we're gonna have some families come and not to toot my horn at all. I'm just saying, but because of worship week. Uh-oh. Um not to toot his hair. No, but I'm just saying everything, everything we do, you know what I mean, just seems to draw folks and point them to Christ. And and hopefully that um that that that's what's happening again and will continue to happen. Um, as always, thank you for joining us.
