high fencing with"},{"startTime":403.915,"endTime":408.565,"body":"barbed wire fences enclosing it, and those inside can hear the planes coming and going."},{"startTime":408.835,"endTime":414.786,"body":"Each roar of a plane, a reminder of their own possible fate on the other"},{"startTime":414.786,"endTime":420.738,"body":"side of the world, a one hour drive outside of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, similar"},{"startTime":420.738,"endTime":426.69,"body":"fencing and barbed wire surround an immigration detention center holding several hundred immigrants per day"},{"startTime":426.69,"endTime":432.245,"body":"in the United States, which has the largest immigration detention system in the world."},{"startTime":432.475,"endTime":438.108,"body":"Immigration prisons are spread across the west coast and southern border and southeast isolated in"},{"startTime":438.108,"endTime":443.742,"body":"the middle of a of nowhere in central Texas, or buried in the vastness of"},{"startTime":443.742,"endTime":449.375,"body":"a desert in New Mexico are out of view within the buildings of an office"},{"startTime":449.375,"endTime":452.005,"body":"park in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado."},{"startTime":453.015,"endTime":458.94,"body":"While in the interior of the United States, local jails serve as the primary apparatus"},{"startTime":458.94,"endTime":460.125,"body":"for detaining immigrants."},{"startTime":460.755,"endTime":466.742,"body":"Some of the jails are placed far out of sight in agricultural farmlands, while others"},{"startTime":466.742,"endTime":472.73,"body":"are placed right in the center of a typical small town Midwestern county square, like"},{"startTime":472.73,"endTime":478.717,"body":"in Brazil, Indiana, in European countries like Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands and Italy, these sites"},{"startTime":478.717,"endTime":484.705,"body":"of immigration detention take on many different forms from that of, of a facility next"},{"startTime":484.705,"endTime":490.693,"body":"to a metropolitan airport, to military bank, uh, barracks in a remote mountain forest or"},{"startTime":490.693,"endTime":494.685,"body":"even to an ordinary looking apartment complex in a suburb."},{"startTime":495.625,"endTime":501.375,"body":"The physical forms and shapes of these places often vary creatively, so from one place"},{"startTime":501.375,"endTime":502.525,"body":"to the next."},{"startTime":503.335,"endTime":508.565,"body":"These systems of incarceration and injustice often elude definition to the public."},{"startTime":509.225,"endTime":515.597,"body":"But one of the constants through all of these places, processes and systems, regardless of"},{"startTime":515.597,"endTime":521.969,"body":"location, is the emotional and psychological trauma they have and with with those men, women"},{"startTime":521.969,"endTime":528.341,"body":"and children who experience them and even those local citizens who work to assist them,"},{"startTime":528.341,"endTime":532.165,"body":"and this trauma often alludes public attention as well."},{"startTime":533.735,"endTime":537.288,"body":"These are some of the places that I want to take you to during this"},{"startTime":537.288,"endTime":537.525,"body":"lecture."},{"startTime":538.185,"endTime":543.181,"body":"The voices and stories of those who I've met in these places will serve photographer, visual storyteller and independent scholar, and I've dedicated 20 years"},{"startTime":553.942,"endTime":559.98,"body":"of my career to long-term projects that explore the intersection of human rights, inequality, injustice,"},{"startTime":559.98,"endTime":564.005,"body":"genocide, identity, and most importantly the power of the state."},{"startTime":564.555,"endTime":570.565,"body":"Through books, exhibitions, film, performance, multimedia and other non-traditional modes of 11 year project I worked on from 2005"},{"startTime":586.64,"endTime":588.485,"body":"to 2016 called Nowhere People."},{"startTime":589.785,"endTime":595.758,"body":"The project documented the struggles of stateless communities and people around the world who had"},{"startTime":595.758,"endTime":601.732,"body":"been arbitrarily depl, deprived or stripped of their citizenship, mostly as a result of state"},{"startTime":601.732,"endTime":603.325,"body":"driven discrimination and racism."},{"startTime":604.865,"endTime":609.942,"body":"The project attempted to show the effects statelessness had on people in these communities as"},{"startTime":609.942,"endTime":615.02,"body":"well as the consequences of the deprivation of nationality had on their access or lack"},{"startTime":615.02,"endTime":618.405,"body":"of access to any number of different rights and opportunities."},{"startTime":619.475,"endTime":625.222,"body":"Nowhere people was a project about human rights, identity and belonging, but it was also"},{"startTime":625.222,"endTime":630.97,"body":"a project about the power of the state to arbitrarily exclude entire communities with total"},{"startTime":630.97,"endTime":636.718,"body":"impunity from the very fabric of modern society using citizenship as the weapon weapon to"},{"startTime":636.718,"endTime":637.485,"body":"accomplish this."},{"startTime":638.595,"endTime":644.34,"body":"Towards the end of that project, I was documenting the stories of people in Europe,"},{"startTime":644.34,"endTime":647.405,"body":"Italy, Malta, Serbia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands."},{"startTime":648.195,"endTime":653.817,"body":"Many stateless people shared stories, um, of the vicious cycle of immigration detention they had"},{"startTime":653.817,"endTime":659.44,"body":"experienced because of the lack of documentation and they could not be deported back to"},{"startTime":659.44,"endTime":665.062,"body":"some, to anywhere across the table from me inside the detention center at the Rome"},{"startTime":665.062,"endTime":670.685,"body":"airport, a Palestinian man told me every time I come here, my health gets worse."},{"startTime":671.425,"endTime":673.725,"body":"He had lived in Italy for over 30 years."},{"startTime":674.185,"endTime":679.645,"body":"It was his seventh time being detained on a rooftop in Malta."},{"startTime":680.245,"endTime":684.805,"body":"I stood with a man from Sierra Leone, a group of pigeons swooped overhead."},{"startTime":685.345,"endTime":688.965,"body":"He looked at the birds, closed his eyes, and then he smiled."},{"startTime":689.645,"endTime":692.925,"body":"I could only imagine where his thoughts took him at that moment."},{"startTime":693.885,"endTime":696.085,"body":"I felt like I would never get sitting on a couch rolling a cigarette in an apartment in the Netherlands."},{"startTime":706.685,"endTime":710.525,"body":"A man originally from Uzbekistan says, I can't trust people heard before and exposed yet another trauma inflicted by"},{"startTime":743.033,"endTime":745.525,"body":"a form of structural and systematic next project."},{"startTime":754.485,"endTime":758.76,"body":"Learning about those experiences of immigration detention at the time also raised a number of"},{"startTime":758.76,"endTime":759.045,"body":"questions."},{"startTime":759.045,"endTime":764.325,"body":"For me, attention is almost always dedicated on documenting the journey and the injustices people"},{"startTime":764.325,"endTime":769.605,"body":"face in the countries they flee from, and the arduous journey they take to get"},{"startTime":769.605,"endTime":773.125,"body":"to that place where they can seek safety and security."},{"startTime":774.145,"endTime":779.405,"body":"And in many cases, the story stops there, they've made it or they haven't."},{"startTime":780.615,"endTime":780.965,"body":"Today."},{"startTime":780.965,"endTime":786.875,"body":"Millions of people worldwide continue to flee wars, conflicts in, uh, human rights, abuse, the"},{"startTime":786.875,"endTime":792.785,"body":"collapse of states and economies and climate change and have left their homes in search"},{"startTime":792.785,"endTime":798.695,"body":"of a better life simultaneously, the B, the debate over issues of immigration and national"},{"startTime":798.695,"endTime":804.606,"body":"security have grown more intertwined, intolerant and extreme, but for hundreds of thousands of people"},{"startTime":804.606,"endTime":810.516,"body":"arriving at that place after, after they have spent months and sometimes years and during"},{"startTime":810.516,"endTime":816.426,"body":"violence, insecurity, the trauma just to get to that destination where they will believe they"},{"startTime":816.426,"endTime":822.336,"body":"will be extended safety and sanctuary turns out to be another traumatic phase in that"},{"startTime":822.336,"endTime":823.125,"body":"continuing journey."},{"startTime":825.185,"endTime":831.117,"body":"For decades, men, women, and children have been apprehended and locked away for months and"},{"startTime":831.117,"endTime":837.05,"body":"even years for nonviolent civil immigration offenses detained administratively as their cases are being heard"},{"startTime":837.05,"endTime":842.983,"body":"or as their asylum claims are being considered, or as they await deportation, they're removed"},{"startTime":842.983,"endTime":848.125,"body":"from society and languish in an ever expanding web of prison-like immigration detentions."},{"startTime":848.625,"endTime":854.682,"body":"The psychological trauma and collateral damage detention has not only on the detained but also"},{"startTime":854.682,"endTime":859.125,"body":"on family, friends, and others is long lasting and often paralyzing."},{"startTime":860.425,"endTime":866.62,"body":"For many immigration detention oftentimes is that point in a person's journey where they are"},{"startTime":866.62,"endTime":868.685,"body":"pushed to their breaking point."},{"startTime":869.635,"endTime":875.669,"body":"Systems of injustice are often elusive in form and shape policy structures, governments put in"},{"startTime":875.669,"endTime":878.485,"body":"place that fuel the detention of vulnerable."},{"startTime":878.485,"endTime":882.685,"body":"Non-citizens are often opaque, disorienting, and ever changing."},{"startTime":883.395,"endTime":888.662,"body":"This makes them more challenging to understand, which makes them more challenging to combat, which"},{"startTime":888.662,"endTime":892.525,"body":"makes those who are caught in them even feel more powerless."},{"startTime":893.505,"endTime":898.521,"body":"The coverage and discussion of issues of migration in immigration are often reduced down to"},{"startTime":898.521,"endTime":899.525,"body":"black and white."},{"startTime":899.625,"endTime":905.303,"body":"Yet in reality there's a lot of gray in between and this is the space"},{"startTime":905.303,"endTime":910.982,"body":"where I have always worked as a photographer, my role is to show and visually"},{"startTime":910.982,"endTime":915.525,"body":"translate what these systems actually look like and how they impact people."},{"startTime":916.445,"endTime":921.937,"body":"I spent the next seven years exploring policies, practices and the geographies of immigration detention"},{"startTime":921.937,"endTime":925.965,"body":"in several countries around the world and it's through this journey."},{"startTime":926.345,"endTime":932.263,"body":"The work not only documents the topography of immigration detention but ultimately looks beyond the"},{"startTime":932.263,"endTime":938.181,"body":"physical architecture of detention through the stories of the people that I met along the"},{"startTime":938.181,"endTime":944.099,"body":"way, the project asks us to expand how we think about detention and the incarceration"},{"startTime":944.099,"endTime":950.017,"body":"of immigrants from not just about the physicality of the walls of the existence of immigration detention and its current placement with an immigration"},{"startTime":976.667,"endTime":983.43,"body":"and asylum policy, a reflection on countries that profess ideals of because I was born in one of those countries"},{"startTime":991.353,"endTime":994.845,"body":"and this prestigious lecture hall is located in one of them as immigration detention"},{"startTime":1012.671,"endTime":1018.077,"body":"having lived and been based in Southeast Asia all of those years, the journey and"},{"startTime":1023.483,"endTime":1025.285,"body":"it would begin in Malaysia"},{"startTime":1034.105,"endTime":1039.073,"body":"For decades now, Burma has been the largest producer of migrants and refugees in Southeast"},{"startTime":1039.073,"endTime":1039.405,"body":"Asia."},{"startTime":1040.345,"endTime":1046.271,"body":"Ethnic groups indigenous to Burma like the Chin Man, Rohingya Han, Karen and Kain have"},{"startTime":1046.271,"endTime":1052.198,"body":"been subjected to human rights abuse, religious persecution and brutal oppression and conflict from
