The Data Protection Act 1998 is, currently, the only piece of English legislation which is specifically directed at protecting personal information and an individual's privacy in respect of it: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/celebrities-the-media-and-the-personal-data-privacy-wars
The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) should properly have been called the Data Privacy Act: it is about privacy of personal data and not merely its security. Recent cases - if successful for the claimants - will change the litigation landscape for everyone.
The protection of personal data is, as a result, the fast-maturing celebrity privacy remedy of choice.
The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/celebrities-the-media-and-the-personal-data-privacy-wars
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,800 lectures free to access or download from the website.
