We find the achievement of an inner state of happiness elusive, yet the standard of living in the developed world improves. Politics, industry, science, art, the media and religion all attempt to make our lives happier. All seem to have diminishing levels of success. Lifestyle gurus and counselling are boom industries. We seem destined to embrace the pharmaceutical dream of a happiness pill. Such an easy option is deliverable: drugs are consumed in vast quantities and make huge profits. Are recreational drugs the only option?
