Fuck The Rules Podcast
Season 4 Episode 15

One of my favorite people, a colleague,Lynn Polhill joins me to talk about her journey to working with teens. A genuine, kind, wicked smart, hilarious person and I'm also fortunate to be friends with her!

More info about Lynn:
"Lynn was born, the only daughter of sharecroppers, living rough in the hills of Tennessee... A BIO!!! Fuck that.  I'm just me.  Which is to say, no one particularly special or important or caught up in trying to make it so.  I was born, and moved 5 times before leaving home the first time @ 14, then 3 more times before leaving home for good @ 16.  I majored in Guidance & Counseling, graduated with a BA at the age of 20, and couldn't take myself seriously.  I moved to NYC, learned some things, moved to South Carolina and learned more.  Over the next 23 years I then began a parade of 12 moves that would cover 5 states, and offer a plethora of titles and experiences like no university can manage.  Somewhere along the way I grew up a little, realized I needed to take my career seriously for my son's sake, and decided to get my MA in Marriage & Family Counseling so that I could legitimately claim to do what I'd been doing for 25 years, offering sage wisdom like a bubble gum wrapper could only aspire to produce.

In 2016 I began working as a therapist with kids in the East Moline district, and in 2020 decided to take a chance on UTHS in making them an offer they couldn't refuse.  I was contracted to be an independent therapist working full time as part of CoVId recovery attempts with the students there.  Since then I've written many memos and emails, subsequently deleted, questioning why I chose that population, and offering not so sage advice on what to do with our current population of lost and lonely adolescents. I've been a sitting member of numerous disciplinary meetings, problem solving teams, risk assessment forums and after school clubs, all aimed at providing exactly what I've always wanted to do:  Support and advocate for kids with their families and communities, while staying in the shade of their enthusiastic youth. Along the way I've made some friends, met some really amazing people and hopefully been able to effect the lives of kids and parents for the good.I've never followed a damn rule in my life, not because I was a rebel, but because I couldn't be bothered to get permission to do what just seemed right.
