ServerlessDays Belfast 2024.

ServerlessDays Belfast is back at Titanic Hotel Belfast on Thursday 23rd May 2024

Our theme is 'Building Beyond Boundaries: ServerlessDays Belfast celebrates the spirit of Innovation'. Find out why you should come to the birthplace of Titanic and what you can expect from this year's ServerlessDays Belfast.

From the 100-year-old Drawing Offices at Titanic Hotel Belfast, we will celebrate how the Serverless Mindset enables engineers and organisations to break barriers and build like never before. We ask our speakers to speak of the courage, ambition and resiliency needed to build big. We will showcase international and local speakers, attracting interest across Europe and the US. Most importantly, we want to inspire Engineers in Ireland, the UK and the local tech community.

Serverless has transcended technology and is now a synonym for Digital Transformation. Engineers working for large and small organisations need a dedicated space to hear and share innovation stories, with Serverless First as the enabler. Senior executives sense that Serverless is at the intersection of technology and business. Everyone needs a network to access the playbook for the Modern Cloud.

Everyone is welcome, especially:
Engineers who are curious by nature are excited to explore new technologies and ways of working.
Leaders seeking the latest solutions and innovations, including product managers, programme directors, and CTOs.
This event is a dedicated space for you to network, share, learn and become inspired about Serverless and Modern Cloud. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dave Anderson:

Hey folks. Welcome to the next edition of Serverless Craic. We launched ServerlessDays Belfast. I will share the theme with you and we can chat about it. It's on Thursday, the 23rd of May at the Titanic Hotel. So the Titanic hotel is beside the Titanic Belfast museum. It's one of the original buildings of the White Star Line. ServerlessDays Belfast will be held in Drawing Room One which is where they used to design all the ships. It has a curved or barrel ceiling with glass to let in natural light. The ship designers drew the ships to scale and there's an old photograph of them from over 100 years ago.

Michael O'Reilly:

It is a nice spot and relevant to your theme.

Mark McCann:

I am looking forward to it. It will be hard to top last year's awesome SeverlessDay at the Game of Thrones Studios. The conversations and content last year was fantastic. The location and the history of Titanic helps frame the thinking around'building beyond boundaries' and how traditionally things were built, engineered, designed and architected compared to what is available to us today.

Dave Anderson:

This is the third annual ServerlessDays Belfast event. The first one was in Belfast in January 2020. Last year, we were in Game of Thrones Studios, which was very cool. And in 2024 we're in the Titanic hotel. ServerlessDays is a brilliant event. It's a one day conference, with around 10 talks on a single track single theme, and it's a community event as well. We all organise it as not for profit, so we end up breaking even. We keep the tickets as cheap as you possible through sponsorship from partners companies. And although it's SeverlessDays Belfast, it is the first serverless conference on the whole island of Ireland. And it's not just for Belfast by any means. Everyone's welcome. There's a large catchment area from Dublin, all the way up to the north of the island. People come from all over Ireland and from England, Europe and even the United States. We create a space where people attend an actual conference and not just a meetup.

Mark McCann:

What's always inspiring at these events is the impact and scale of the things that attendees are working on or developing. Even the side conversations blow my mind with how high up the value chain people are and how much of a global impact they're having with the work that they're doing. Through leveraging the mindsets, technologies and ways of working with a serverless approach. It's phenomenal.

Dave Anderson:

It is about mindset. ServerlessDays has been running for a several years. It's cool that people are show off projects and discuss the technical details but I prefer looking at the mindset change. The theme of the event this year is 'Building Beyond Boundaries' to celebrate the spirit of Innovation. Because people who are involved in serverless projects are driving real change by changing companies and mindsets. And to do that, you need to see the opportunity and you need the courage to actually try, and then the conviction to make it happen. And what I think is really cool, is the thread going back to the same place in Belfast ad building the biggest ocean liner in the world, the Titanic. And the scale of ambition required 100 years ago, to build what were effectively systems. It is no different now when you sit at you desk to build massive global systems. Our theme 'Building Beyond Boundaries' is not only about technical boundaries, it could be boundaries around your location, mindset, business or technical stack. It's about getting out of your comfort zone and building big.

Michael O'Reilly:

Things have changed in the industry over the last five to 10 years and with COVID. We have started to build applications to reach the customer, where they are at. We are deploying in South America remotely from Northern Ireland. 10 years ago, that was almost impossible. It will be interesting to see what other people are doing in that regard and how they've changed in their approach, or how the opportunities have changed.

Mark McCann:

It's about thinking why not us? Be ambitious and give it a go. A lot of the barriers to entry have been removed. And we're starting to see examples of people achieving success with these techniques and mindset shifts. And it's great for those coming up that they have something to look up to and aspire to. And be inspired to deliver impact and change across the world.

Dave Anderson:

When I first started working in Dublin for a telecoms company, we would create a tape. We would copy that tape and people would physically get on a plane and take that tape to somewhere like Sao Paulo to install software for a telecom operator. So to be able to do what we do now is absolutely insane. The storytelling part is important. People will do a technical show-and-tell but they also talk about how they did it, got buy in and the challenges they had. Which are the fascinating stories. We are a super accessible community in a safe environment. Nobody's an expert. We're all just trying to figure out and learn from each other. The 'Call for Papers' is on Sessionize. Look up@BFSServerless on X or search for ServerlessDays Belfast. On sessionize we are at sessionize.com/serverlessdays-belfast-2024. So if you fancy speaking, pop your talk in. If you fancy attending, grab an early bird ticket. It's a great reflection on the Serverless community that you see talks online and people writing articles and think they are amazing. And then you meet them and think, wow, they are normal people who are actually quite friendly. It's a nice commuinity of like minded people.

Michael O'Reilly:

I've never experienced a community like it to be fair. It is very inclusive and there's lots going on as well. Everyone has a growth mindset.

Dave Anderson:

So that's the craic! We are looking forward to a bunch of really good talks on 23rd May and the social events around that as well. Get your tickets now!
