S4E14: ta...kita...ta

Season 4 Episode 14

Musicians, vocalists or instrumentalists, dwell simultaneously in two worlds - an external world of practice and performance and an internal world of self doubts, dilemmas, contentment and possible bliss. The canvas becomes intense if the context is Indian classical music - Khyal or Carnatic. How does a musician navigate these worlds while staying focused on the art & craft? What are the joys and agonies of an accompanying artist? What are the subtle processes of ‘waiting & anticipating’ between a lead and accompanying artist? What does it mean to be ‘pragmatic & anchored’ in this profession? How to balance traditions with modernity and keep evolving as a musician?

To explore this subject and more, here’s a conversation with Vijay Natesan, one India’s finest Mridangam players. A ‘Talmani’ and a child prodigy having performed across India and around the world, come December, Vijay finds himself playing at the prestigious ‘Margazhi Festival’ in Chennai. “As an accompanist my role is to support the lead artist and elevate the overall musical experience,” he says.
