Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Z Michelson Travel Podcast. This podcast is devoted to the travel industry. Z says let your imagination run wild and start dreaming about where you want to go, and dream big, reach for the stars, and if you only get to the moon, at least you enjoyed the trip. Your guide to travel is Z Michelson, a travel advisor, and sitting at the controls is Jay Lawrence, your concierge of podcast travel. Now here's Z. That's me, that's me, I'm Z.

Speaker 2:

And I'm Jay Lawrence. You know we always have fun on our shows.

Speaker 3:

Yes, we do, and this is going to be one fun and exciting program, because I know you have a guest today.

Speaker 2:

I know I have a guest today, but I want to let everybody know that we are brought to you by Collage Travel Media Network. Yes, but I want to let everybody know that we are brought to you by collage travel media network. Yes, and it's home to collage travel radio and ZMAX radio dot live, yeah.

Speaker 3:

And, by the way, we have a new logo on the ZMAX thing. I know I've seen it.

Speaker 2:

It's so cool. It's so cool, it's so. Hey like well man sixties and seventies.

Speaker 3:

play the music of the 60s and the 70s.

Speaker 2:

And a little bit of the 80s.

Speaker 3:

And a little of the 80s. Yeah, Did I miss that.

Speaker 2:

You did. That's because you're a child of the 60s and my wife keeps saying oh, I love that song.

Speaker 3:

Oh, I have not heard that, oh, I love that song.

Speaker 2:

So we play the music that everybody loves to hear, back from the 70s to today's hits and, of course, my podcast. But you know, today I did promise to bring in Diane from Emma Waterways and she's got a whole lot of new information to let us know about and I'm really excited to talk to her. And, just like we promised, we are going to be chatting with Diane from Amma Waterways. She was just traveling all around with her family having a great time, but today we're going to be talking about some of the new promotions that Amma Waterways has out, and she just has a whole slew of them. Diane, welcome to the show. How are you doing today?

Speaker 4:

Thank you so much. I'm so happy to be here and you're right, I have been traveling and now I'm back, but it motivates me to travel even more every time I go out there. But you are so correct. On July 1st, Ama Waterways came out with a whole slew, as you said, of promotions. We extended some of the ones we had, but we've even, you know, really beefed it up and there's some incredible opportunities as long as you book now and book early.

Speaker 2:

Book now, book early. And you know we had talked off mic that. You said you know, because right now this show is airing in August of 2024. And you said that they can actually book everything by September 30th but they don't have to sale now.

Speaker 4:

Absolutely, and a lot of these promotions that I'll tell you a little bit about go all the way through to 2026.

Speaker 2:

Oh my gosh, oh my goodness 2026. Sometimes it's hard for me to think that far ahead it is.

Speaker 4:

And you know it's so funny because in old pre-COVID days we always were just a year out, but now people are planning further and further in advance. So we're making the inventory open and available to start booking and planning early, especially if they're going as groups. Because you know it's if you have more the luxury of time when you're working with groups, you know you get more people together and you know when you travel with the group it's so much fun.

Speaker 2:

And it's family fun. You know you got a lot of a lot of different generations all going on Grandma, grandpa, you know sons, daughters and the kids, right.

Speaker 4:

I'm glad you said that because you know the trip I just returned from was a three-generation trip. It was me my daughter and my granddaughter and, of course, the rest of the family. But to me, I realized I was doing a three-generational trip. Can I tell you something? At the end of the trip, we were at the airport ready to fly home.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 4:

And we all looked at each other and none of us wanted to go home. We already said we can't wait. What are we going to do for our next family vacation? Oh, fun, Yay. We all still love each other. We all had a great time and we can't wait to do it again.

Speaker 2:

Right, they always say get to know your family by going on a trip with them and you really get to know the family Absolutely. But you were kind of a special grandma too, because I heard you took the kids to a Taylor Swift concert.

Speaker 4:

Oh yeah, oh yeah, that was the icing on the cake. Yeah, I do win the best grandmother award. I think the best grandmother award.

Speaker 2:

I think. So now, getting back to AMA waterways, give everybody an idea of where you sail to, because you have many ships.

Speaker 4:

So we do. We actually, as of next year, have 29 ships, and it was announced we're going to add nine more.

Speaker 4:

So we are in a growth mode. The reason why it's so many more that are being added is because we did have some of our ships that were being fully chartered by a company we did business with out of Australia, and now they're no longer doing that, which is actually good in our world, because now we get back that inventory which we desperately need. At the moment, the Rhine River and the Danube River continue to be the top selling destinations. They are tracking really, really well and I will tell you that it never, never seems to dwindle in the interest. We constantly are tweaking the itineraries on the Danube and the Rhine to include different extensions, different tours off board the interest. We constantly are tweaking the itineraries on the Danube and the Rhine to include different extensions, different tours off board the ship. So it's just always making it fresh. So even if you've been before, you could go again.

Speaker 2:

Right, because there's so much more to see. You know you can't, just you can't see everything. The first trip you have to go again and again Now, when you travel on these, when you travel on these ships. They're not gigantic ships, they're perfect sized. What's the average passenger load on these ships?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, that's what's so wonderful about river cruising it's average about 160 passengers.

Speaker 2:

That's nice.

Speaker 4:

We do have some smaller ones. The one in Portugal is 100. The international ones, like the one in Vietnam, is 124. So there are different But's a 196 passenger. And it is very special and I love, love this ship, but because of its sheer size and the width it can only navigate the waters on the Danube.

Speaker 2:

So it's only on the Danube. The Ama Magna yes, that's right, I've seen pictures of it. You know I'm dying to get on it. It's gorgeous.

Speaker 4:

It is beautiful and you know Rudy did announce. Rudy is our owner, rudy.

Speaker 1:

Schreiner.

Speaker 4:

He actually is the one that started the company back 22 years ago and he did announce he is going to build another special, alma Magna. He loves that ship so much, so I don't know what it's going to be called yet, but maybe it'll be Alma Magna 2. I'm not sure.

Speaker 2:

That would be easy. That would be easy.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Now a lot of people. They're afraid to travel solo, but you focus on some of this. You do have solo travelers on board your ships.

Speaker 4:

We absolutely do it, ama. We've always embraced the fact that a lot of people travel as single, even if they're married. Maybe one of the spouses can't go and they travel as a solo.

Speaker 1:

Right, I understand that you understand that right Me too.

Speaker 4:

I often go without my husband because I just have to, for whatever reason. So we've always had a program where the worst case scenario, I say, is that solo traveler would pay 50% more. Now, in the River Coos world, that is extraordinary to start with because, most of the companies charge you double right, we do not do that we also have select dates where we charge reduced single supplements, only 25% or only 10% but at this moment there's even a list for 2024 sailings where we've actually waived the single supplement.

Speaker 2:

Whoa. So all you single people out there that aren't traveling with a partner or a spouse, keep that in mind. Call your travel advisors and let them know hey. I want to get on board and they're not by themselves on these ships. It's like a whole family on board.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, and you know what? Even on Alma, what we do is when you get on board and we know you're solo traveler the very first, not the first night, but the second night we have what's called the solo traveler reception and anybody traveling as a single we meet together. That way we know we're all in this together, and then we even often set the tables with only maybe setting a five instead of six, so you never feel like you're out of place.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 4:

So and honestly, river cruising is very conducive to people talking to each other and getting to know each other, so the barriers and the walls are kind of broken down. It's not like on a big cruise ship where you can get lost.

Speaker 2:

It really is very intimate and that's nice. And your excursions are included in the travel, correct.

Speaker 4:

Correct All excursions. And with Ama it's not just one single excursion like most riverlines, with us it's multiple, multiple. You could go anywhere from slow walking trips to fast walking trips, to hiking, to biking, to learning to make some kind of culinary delight, to special small group experiences well, I think jay's, jay's wife would like that, because she was a a teacher that she was a home ec, so she would probably love that Learn some tricks and tips.

Speaker 4:

I love those. I've learned to make candy in Belgium. Oh yes, I've learned to make goulash in Hungary. It's really fun things that we do.

Speaker 3:

Oh wow. Can we have your address? I'd like to come visit your kitchen.

Speaker 4:

You want to come for some goulash? I'm very good at making goulash. I do make some killer goulash now, since I took a lesson in Hungary.

Speaker 2:

There you go Now. Is there anything different other than going for that? I mean, you can go on these bike tours, and it seems like they can take or pick which level of exercise they're looking at when they go on these excursions. Absolutely.

Speaker 4:

So, with Alma Waterways specifically, our average demographic age is 55. That means we're getting older people and we're getting younger people, and because of that, from the very outset of the company, we've had diversity in our shore excursion activities. So, no matter what your level is of agility, whether you are a slow walker you just had knee surgery or whether you're a fast walker, we've got that for you to choose from. What I love the most, though, is that you're never obligated to a shore excursion In advance. We ask you to sign up for the one you prefer, but then, once you get on board the ship, if you change your mind, you've signed up for the bike tour, and that day you're just not feeling it. It's OK, just tell us, go and get on, jump on another tour. We're very, very flexible with Ama Waterways. We're a family business. We want you to feel at home on board. We want you to feel that you don't you're not, you know forced on into one particular thing just because you made a choice before you left.

Speaker 2:

Oh wow, just feel at home. That's fun. And you said these are all included in the price.

Speaker 4:

Yes, there's no extra charge for that, even the bicycles, even the bicycles. And there's 25 bikes on all our standard ships and on the Magna we have 50 bicycles, wow. So you just go out and take them as you like, or you can go on the biking tours that we've already got biking guides scheduled for.

Speaker 3:

Oh good, Because I want to go biking Right, jay loves to bicycle.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm a biker, he's a biker.

Speaker 4:

My husband's like that too he loves it when we go on the rivers. He does all the biking trips. Now do they have the e-bikes too? No, we do not, I'll tell you why? Because they're very heavy bikes so they're hard to carry on and off the ships. If they fall people can have you know, more things could happen. So we just say you've got to be able to bike. But I will tell you, the bikes are German touring bikes.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay.

Speaker 4:

Very, very easy to pedal, to navigate.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's really good. Now, while we're chatting and you've traveled quite a bit, I'd like to talk about a travel tip. What is your favorite travel tip?

Speaker 4:

Oh, I would love to give you my favorite, one that I only just recently decided is the most important thing people should think about, and it's packing. And I will tell you why. Because in the last several trips I've taken, sometimes things happen with airlines and things change and there's weather conditions and your flight has to be moved. And I have learned to pack light. I can't even believe it myself, but I have learned to pack in a flexing carry-on and a backpack and it is my favorite thing I've done recently, because I've also found that when I get to my ship or I get to the hotel, wherever I'm going, it's so much easier. I get in, I find my things, so I've learned to pack creatively, color matching things so that you know you've got your blacks, your whites, your browns, your blues, whatever it is you're bringing.

Speaker 2:

So you want to kind of cross match things.

Speaker 4:

Cross match things. You know the top matches the same black pants Everywhere you go. Now see, you can have laundry service and it's very reasonable. On Ama, we actually have a self-service laundry on the Magna, really, on the other ships, yeah, and on the other ships you can put in for your laundry, but it's very inexpensive, wow. So my biggest tip right now in the world we're living in, with all the changes going on with the airlines, is pack light, try to figure it out. Learn how to pack in a carry-on if you can, and you will not regret it.

Speaker 3:

When you went with your family, were you packing light?

Speaker 4:

It sounded like you had a lot.

Speaker 3:

And how long was that trip?

Speaker 4:

You're right. Well, the reason we really had to force ourselves we had six people renting one car. This particular trip wasn't on a river. We went to Ireland and we had to share a car, and so we each were forced to pack the carry-on and a backpack. And it worked great. Everything fit in the car very nicely when we were leaving and going from place to place it was much easier to repack everything because there wasn't as much stuff Right, there wasn't as much stuff.

Speaker 2:

Now, what is your must-have in your packing?

Speaker 4:

My must-have? Hmm, for me personally, I think it's just I must have a pair of black. If you're talking about clothes, I need a pair of black pants, because they match everything, and I always must have a coat that's multi-weather proof, in other words. Yeah, like a jacket.

Speaker 2:

Cold wet Right.

Speaker 3:

And that fits into your travel bag, your carry-on.

Speaker 4:

Usually not. Usually, what I do is I wear the jacket that I'm, that's my main jacket that I'm going to use if it rains, if it gets colder or whatever, and that's my wear on one and also my comfortable shoes.

Speaker 1:

Those are the two things.

Speaker 4:

I learned my lesson because one year I flew over there and didn't have my comfortable shoes on, and it was a year when I was still checking bags. And I will tell you guess what? They lost my bag. And I went to Amsterdam, and the first thing I had to do was go to a shoe store and buy a pair of shoes Comfy shoes Now, granted, I still love the shoes I bought there, but I learned my lesson, so I'm always yeah, Great tip.

Speaker 2:

Thanks, Diane. I know people are going to want to figure that out.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, it really works and once you get used to it, you feel really comfortable with it. You know you've got your most important thing, your jacket, your multi-purpose jacket, and you've got your comfy shoes and you're good. Oh, and you know what? One other packing tip I'll tell you. I always put one change of clothes minimum in my backpack if I have to check a bag Right.

Speaker 2:

So if you do find you need to, check a bag, please, please, do that Just a little bit of a change of clothing. Please do that Just a little bit of a change of clothing, even if you can only do your bloomers, exactly.

Speaker 4:

I've had so many guests that have arrived when their bag didn't arrive with them, and I feel so bad if they don't have even one change of clothes in their carry-on.

Speaker 2:

Now getting back to your ships, you know one of the things that I'm going to be working on down in the future. You know one of the things that I'm going to be working on down in the future. My husband is a World War II buff and he would just love to see Normandy, so I know your ships go in that direction and you do tours and excursions over there. What is that like?

Speaker 4:

It is amazing and I'm glad you brought that up, because it is July the 9th and the Olympics are coming up in Paris almost right?

Speaker 2:

Well, the Olympics are going to be over by the time we air this show.

Speaker 4:

I'm glad, but I'm thinking that they'll show a lot of footage about Normandy during the Olympics. Normandy is actually not just a beach where we know what D-Day took place. It's a region of the country and it's stunning, it's beautiful, and so when you do our Paris to Normandy trip, it's a, it's a Seine river, and you start and end in Paris or you can start and end in another destination, le Havre, and depending on the itinerary you choose, we have two of them. But when you go on this particular trip, not only are you treated to the Normandy beaches, but also the beautiful, beautiful river area along the way, where you see places like Han floor, you see places like Rowan, which has rich World War Two history there, but yet it's set in such a stunning area. So, yes, plan the trip there. That's that. I would highly, highly recommend it. We do something very special at the cemetery at the Omaha Beach area we go to the American Senate Cemetery and we do a special wreath laying for our guest of Ama.

Speaker 4:

It's a very emotional day. It's very. You feel very connected. It's very important and you'll go away never forgetting that moment that you got to experience this.

Speaker 2:

Unbelievable, unbelievable it sounds like Ama Waterways brings the culture, brings the life, brings everything to you while you're traveling. And I understand, the food is pretty good too.

Speaker 4:

The food is off the scale. We have won many awards for our food service. We are members of Chez Neu Rotissiere from Paris, so the food is, without saying, going to be exceptional. If you have any special dietary requirements, please don't hesitate to tell your travel advisor. We will put it in the record. We can handle everything except kosher. Kosher. We can't handle because it requires you to separate food. Yes, it's too small space that we work in. But everything else, please tell us we can help you Fabulous, Now off mic.

Speaker 2:

We were chit-chatting about select sailings, where you have some percentages and dollars off.

Speaker 4:

Yes, so tell me about that. The big news on January, on July 1st, we did announce that we are having on many, many select sailings, over hundreds of them. I was starting to count, but I've lost count. There are 20% savings available to you.

Speaker 1:

Wow.

Speaker 4:

There's no catches, it's just on those select sailings you get this special additional discount. This is huge. This is a very large discount that is only available occasionally. So I would really encourage you to please check with your travel advisors if, oh, wow, as of this moment, all 26 inventories open, that's on the Rhine, the Danube, all the rivers in France there's many rivers in France the Doral River, portugal, all of these rivers on the select sailings that have been designated.

Speaker 1:

Wow.

Speaker 4:

So there is an urgency to you know, call and get yourself booked, and you know what See, to book with Alma Waterways is only a $400 per person deposit. That is it? At the time you book you are in a cancellation period of $200. But most people are immediately buying travel insurance at that time because it covers them for any pre-existing situations that take place. Right, if there is a future cancellation and you do not have to pay on the waterways, your balance until 90 days before departure, that's nice too, now.

Speaker 2:

We're focusing right now on Europe. You know Portugal and. Europe, but you guys go more than just there.

Speaker 4:

We do the. You know portugal and europe, but you guys go more than just there. We do. Besides the beautiful rivers in europe, we also do, of course, um the egypt trip, which is on the nile river super big trend right now.

Speaker 4:

It's doing really well, so big in fact that we added a brand new ship just two months ago, the amalilia. So we now have two ships on the Nile River the Amidalia, the Amalilia Absolutely exceptional trip, best way to see Egypt. I've done it. Go for it. Starts at 11 days, combining the cruise with the land in Cairo and an extension to Jordan, if you should choose. Then we've got the Africa trip trip which is in south africa, which does the chobi river on the confluence of namibia and zimbabwe, and that gets you to victoria falls, gets you to south africa, gives you traditional game viewing in the bush, gives you game viewing by water out of this world. Then we've got the Mekong, vietnam, cambodia. Wow, the 124 passenger ship takes you from Vietnam to Cambodia or vice versa. Exceptional but super popular right now that one has to be booked early Right.

Speaker 2:

Got to book in advance and you know contact your travel advisors.

Speaker 4:

It's very, very important, yeah, and we will have one last big surprise Starting in January of 2025, we will begin cruising in Colombia, woo.

Speaker 2:

Whoa yes.

Speaker 4:

So excited. The Magdalena River is waiting for us. The two beautiful ships being built, Amma Magdalena and Amma Melodia, will start. We cannot wait to get them up and running.

Speaker 2:

And that's in 2025.

Speaker 4:

So that's coming, can they?

Speaker 2:

book for this now. Can you look at it?

Speaker 4:

Absolutely Actively. We're taking many, many bookings. In fact, it's filling up fast because the ships are only 64 passengers.

Speaker 2:

Oh, wow, right. So it's almost like you're on a private ship all to yourself.

Speaker 4:

It is. I can't wait to do it. It's called the Land of a Thousand Anthems because of the different types of music styles there. It's beautiful, colorful, and I think once the world sees us river cruising down there, they're going to flock there. They already are. By the way, colombia is doing really well with tourism at the moment. It is really at the top of travel trends list, so this provides you with a really exceptional way to see this country.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you know, you know me, I love, I love to be on a ship unpack once and you just go and float around and go to the different places. It's fabulous, the best way to travel. It's amazing. Ammo Waterways can take you all over on these beautiful ships and they're not so crowded like we're seeing in many, many ship trends right now. They're nice, the food is good. Ammo Waterways has lots of inclusives in the sailings. Am I correct? That is correct.

Speaker 4:

Everything is pretty much included. The only thing's not included. We include unlimited complimentary wines, beers and sodas through all mealtimes, which is almost all the time Outside of the mealtime. If you'd like to buy something at the bar, you can, but it's very, very economical. But we also have the sip and sale hour prior to dinner, which provides complimentary cocktails for you for a whole hour before dinner and you could shop in our gift shop. You could get a spa treatment, but other than that, we've included everything for you along the way. Our cabins are large and spacious, with double balconies, which means twin balconies, of both French and exterior balconies. There's just a few staterooms on the bottom deck that have fixed windows, but for the most part, everyone gets some type of a balcony situation as well. So it's just a lovely, lovely way to travel on the rivers.

Speaker 2:

Well, again, Diane, thank you for joining us. I think next time we talk we're going to be talking probably more, because we're going to get close to fourth quarter and seeing that Columbia dream come true.

Speaker 3:

Yes, and 2026.

Speaker 1:

And 2026. And 2026.

Speaker 2:

And you got those nine more ships coming out. I can't wait. I know it never ends Well, that's great. Thank you again for joining us today and we look forward to chatting with you again.

Speaker 4:

Sounds great. Thanks for having me. Hope to see you on the rivers.

Speaker 3:

It was nice hearing from.

Speaker 2:

Diane. She always has some great news with amma waterways. It's fabulous and, like I said, I am looking to do something with them soon. So groups, groups, groups. But you know, jay, it's this time. Yeah, it's your trivia question time I've got uh diane.

Speaker 3:

Can you come back? I I need Diane back here please.

Speaker 2:

Well, I think this one you might get. Oh, yeah, yeah. So here's the question In what country did the first Starbucks open outside of North America? You know we're both Starbucks drinkers, oh no.

Speaker 3:

Outside.

Speaker 2:

Outside of North America. So where did they go after North America? What was their first hit?

Speaker 3:

Oh, gee, oh, I'm so, I know.

Speaker 2:

Where would you think you wouldn't be able to get a Starbucks? England is my only, of course you can get a Starbucks in England, but where did they go first?

Speaker 3:

Really.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, where did Starbucks go first, right?

Speaker 3:

outside.

Speaker 2:

Outside of North America.

Speaker 3:

The Arctic Circle. I don't Come on.

Speaker 2:

You would really need a Starbucks there, that's for sure.

Speaker 3:

This is a fantastic trivia question and I have no inkling.

Speaker 2:

Do you want me to give you the answer?

Speaker 3:

Well, I think we better.

Speaker 2:

Okay Japan.

Speaker 3:

Okay, I can definitely see that, Yep yep, yep.

Speaker 2:

So that was the first country outside of North America that Starbucks opened up in.

Speaker 3:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Japan. They need their coffee too.

Speaker 3:

They need it All right Now. Diane was mentioning something about the military we met. Yes, we didn't get to mention that.

Speaker 2:

We got so much information from Diane and then, when we were hanging up with her, she says oh, by the way, don't forget, on select sailings, the military, if you are active or retired, they got two for ones. Oh, wow, yeah, two for ones, and they do have discounts on pricing on others it's on select sailing. It's on select sailing but what a deal.

Speaker 3:

I mean I might be able to work that in.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and you know a lot of people have family that are in the military and they want to do this and select sailing. So contact your travel advisor and say, hey, you know, my grandfather is retired military and we want to do this. And they do two for ones on select sailings. Good idea Unbelievable, unbelievable, yeah. But again we want to thank Diane from Emma Waterways and, by the way, I will be putting together a few groups with Emma, all right. So if you want to sail along with us, you've got to let me know.

Speaker 2:

Yep, you've got to shoot me an email and my email is real easy it's zmichelson at gmailcom. How do you spell that? And Z is spelled Z-E E. So remember, if you want to go along with us, you've got to let me know, because these ships are not that big.

Speaker 3:

No, like 150 average. Right, that was the average.

Speaker 2:

So some were like 94, some were like 190. Right, you know, but they're not the 10,000 sailings.

Speaker 3:
