Speaker 2:It's about time you got here.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I know there's been lots of traveling. We've been doing lots of traveling, both you and I and our spouses. Oh boy, yep, we've been busy.
Speaker 2:Yep, yep.
Speaker 3:Busy, busy bees, but busy bees.
Speaker 2:But you know what? What I just want to? Let everybody know that this is being brought to you by collage travel media network, bingo, and it's home to collage travel radiocom and zmax radiolive. Yes, and of course, my podcast podcasting.
Speaker 3:And then you do travel as well. I am a travel advisor you're a travel advisor and we've been traveling this year. And we're going to be doing more traveling.
Speaker 2:My calendar is getting full.
Speaker 3:Well, we can actually do these podcasts while we travel too. Absolutely yeah, that'll be fun. That'll be fun, and we have lots of groups going too, so people can travel with us?
Speaker 2:Well, that's what I want to know about. We've got to start talking about the groups for next year.
Speaker 3:We are, we're going to start talking about the groups for next year. We are we're going to be talking about groups for next year. We have one for cruises.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 3:On Celebrity Cruise coming in July yes, 2025. And we also have one going to Ireland for 2025 in late September. All right, so we are excited. We're getting stuff together yeah yeah, we're probably going to do an Italy one too.
Speaker 2:I was going to say this kind of reminds me of 2020. Uh-huh, 2020. When we started this dang thing, we just kept traveling. Yes, All right let's get to the podcast. What do you say?
Speaker 3:Well, you know, I'm always reviewing topics and tips and more traveling. I get all of this information from all sources. I get newspapers and magazines and what I try to do is I try to pass the information on to everybody and I know many people are becoming more and more frustrated at the major airports.
Speaker 2:Right Flight delays, crazy crazy crowds and a whole lot more what about major airports.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I know, major airports have the top airlines.
Speaker 2:Right.
Speaker 3:And that's why so many people choose those airports, right? But today I'm going to chat about smaller airports that may help you feel a little bit more relaxed, and some of them do have some of the major airlines.
Speaker 2:I think that would be a good idea.
Speaker 3:You think Right, yes, yes, so you know, I've been to smaller airports, I've been to a lot of small airports and I've been to some of the major airports, right. So I know how both of them are and as everybody knows my feelings on the Denver airport.
Speaker 2:I was just that's what flashed through my mind was walking through the southwest area from Denver. There were so many people. How many planes can they have?
Speaker 3:Tons of people, tons of planes. They're going under a massive construction right now and that's also getting everybody very confused. Also, for people who don't know, the Denver airport lies on the outskirts of the city 25 miles out of the city of Denver, right. So just be aware of that.
Speaker 2:It happens to be the largest land area of an airport. Second to the largest in the world.
Speaker 3:And your son lives out there. My daughter lives out there, so when we fly, we're flying into Denver. Yes, so I know traveling out of some of the smaller airports when I fly and, yes, sometimes the smaller airports have the budget airlines Right, but not all budget airlines are bad. That's what I've been hearing. Yeah, so you go to the smaller airport. You can usually can easily get through check in all very quickly.
Speaker 2:Very quickly. Can I grab a cup of coffee?
Speaker 3:You can grab a cup of coffee and with the budget airlines you know budget airlines you can get through those lines faster and, of course, they have coffee and food on the other side. Right, you can even save yourself a couple of dollars. Wow, yeah, yeah. So it's based on that. So let's talk about which smaller airports what's?
Speaker 2:a smaller airport.
Speaker 3:Okay, so you want to go to LA? You want to go to Los Angeles, or perhaps San Diego, yeah, okay, both airports are very big. I've been to LAX many, many times, so try flying in or out of Long Beach. Long Beach does have JetBlue, southwest Hawaiian Delta and American Well, that's pretty good.
Speaker 2:Yeah, Delta and American Well that's pretty good.
Speaker 3:Yeah, the Long Beach Airport is located off of the 405, which is a major highway in California, and only about four miles from the ocean, so if the beach is where you want to go, it's right there.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so okay, ring, ring, ring. Yes, travel agent yes. I would like to go to Los Angeles. Okay, how do I miss the to go to Los Angeles? Okay, how do I miss the LAX airport?
Speaker 3:How do you miss it? How do I miss it? Well, we first find out what airlines they like. Okay, some people love to fly Southwest. Yes, so I can say okay, you love Southwest, let's get you into Long Beach and it is a nice airport. I've been in and out of Long Beach a couple of times. It's not bad at all. So you're probably going to have to rent a car, you know, particularly if you want to go to San Diego. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 3:So if you go to this Long Beach to go into San Diego, hop on the 5 and head south. It's about two hours, but it's a lot better than spending two hours standing in a line Right and getting all sorts of frustrated I'm thinking it was at the uh john wayne airport, is that uh? John wayne, is is different.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's north isn't it a little north and that's a smaller airport?
Speaker 3:yeah, it's kind of south near ontario it is yeah, so you know and they've changed names around quite a bit but long beach airport, that's where you want to go if you're heading towards los angeles or san die, because it's still a pretty nice airport. It has some of the major airlines and the drive to San Diego can be very pretty, you know, because you're driving along the coast, so you've got a lot of coastal views.
Speaker 3:Yeah, so it'd be pretty cool. Yeah, I've driven up and down the five, the one I've been all over California north and south.
Speaker 2:Now what if I don't want to go to California and I want to go to, like, boston or someplace?
Speaker 3:Okay. So if you're going to the far, far northeast, like Boston or Portland, maine, you may want to consider Bangor International, and you know, I know Jerry is very fond of Maine and you know, I know Jerry is very fond of Maine. It's only about an hour from Bar Harbor but it's also an easy drive to the state's most popular summertime areas. So you may have to drive a bit to get to Boston, but if you want to see some small areas along the way.
Speaker 2:you might want to think of Bangor, maine, bangor, international. Well, of course you drive. Boston is such a large area you could be driving to the outskirts anyhow, so it'd be easier to get to.
Speaker 3:Exactly it cuts. You might want to drive, it might make you drive a little bit more, but at least you've landed, you're in a location and you can get to where you're going and you're not standing on a line getting frustrated trying to get in and out of an airport and it makes it a lot simpler.
Speaker 2:Yes, mm-hmm, yes.
Speaker 3:So before we take off for another airport, like that, I am only punning you. Okay, that's my trivia music.
Speaker 2:So here's a trivia question what are you punning me for?
Speaker 3:Right, take off from another airport oh yeah. Take off from another airport. Yeah, okay. So in which South African city can you find Boulder's Beach, which is inhabited by a large number of wild penguins? Which is inhabited by a large number of wild penguins. I believe I need a multiple choice on this.
Speaker 2:Okay, let me see if I can find your multiple choice on this South African cities. See, I don't. You're the one who wanted to go to South Africa.
Speaker 3:Yeah, you know, I like animals.
Speaker 2:The penguins, do we want to do another tribute question?
Speaker 3:Well, there's a ton of penguins on this beach. Okay, how could I put this? Let's see, I don't know if I can give you any. You're a South African from South Africa, okay, well, I don't think you're going to get it. I can't give you any kind of hint, because I'm trying to figure out a hint like I gave you the other day.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry but you've got me at a loss because I do not know any cities in South Africa.
Speaker 3:Okay, so Boulders Beach here's the answer is located on the Cape Peninsula in Simonstown in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and it's commonly known as Boulders Bay, and it has tons and tons of penguins. It's absolutely adorable. You see all the little penguins there. The water is absolutely gorgeous and it's called Boulders Beach, simontown, cape Town, south Africa, so that's where it's at.
Speaker 2:Okay, Now on the list of did Jay get these questions right or wrong? I want this one to be out in the left field.
Speaker 3:Well, cape Town, cape Town, South Africa. It's kind of popular. But yeah, there you go, Cape Town, south Africa, boulders Beach Go see the penguins. It is very pretty. So there you go, jay. We'll have to put that on our bucket list.
Speaker 2:Okay, it's called Stump the Old man. Here we go.
Speaker 3:Stump Jay, stump Jay. Maybe we can call it trivia. We'll call it Stump Jay, new name for the episode.
Speaker 2:Stump Jay.
Speaker 3:Stump Jay, all right. So let's get back to the airport, shall we?
Speaker 2:What about Texas? I ever go to Texas.
Speaker 3:You know I have not been, I have not flown into Texas. I've driven into Texas many, many times, but I haven't flown in. Yeah, so if you're thinking of Dallas instead of Dallas-Fort Worth, think of Dallas Love Field Airport.
Speaker 2:Absolutely the old Love Field.
Speaker 3:Right, it's a little bit older. It's less than 20 miles from Dallas.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it's more compact and it may be a cheaper alternative if you're flying into Dallas. It's also a major hub for Southwest Airlines.
Speaker 2:Absolutely so, if you like Southwest Airlines.
Speaker 3:there you go and it's actually closer to downtown Dallas, and apparently the airport just had some recent updates too.
Speaker 2:I would hope.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean it's been around for a while, but they've been updating and, like I said, it's only 20 miles from the city.
Speaker 2:Basically, when you're looking at small airports, you're probably looking at Southwest. It's got most of the service. Would that be wrong?
Speaker 3:Probably not completely accurate. Not completely accurate, you just have to question it. All right Certain things. They don't have it.
Speaker 2:Okay, so we've been to LA. We've been Boston or not Dallas? Where are we going next?
Speaker 3:Now, if you're flying to Philadelphia or Newark now I've flown into Newark. It is a crazy airport you may want to consider Lehigh Valley International. Oh, the airlines that service here are American Allegiant, delta and United Okay, so you've got a couple of biggies there, you know and also Allegiant. This airport is located about halfway between both Philadelphia and Newark airports, so it's not too far. It's about an hour's drive either way, and of course, it also knocks on the door of Manhattan. So New York City, new York City, new York, new York, right. So this airport is small. It's clean and convenient.
Speaker 2:And that's the important thing.
Speaker 3:Yeah, because when you get into places like New York, I hear a lot of dinging and that's not me. It's not me, I don't know where it's coming from we're getting dinged. Somebody's dinging us? Do I have my?
Speaker 2:phone on or something. No, I don't know.
Speaker 3:My phone's off to the side, so it's not even yelling at me.
Speaker 2:I wonder okay.
Speaker 3:Maybe somebody wants to get on one of these planes they want right away. Okay. So just knowing Philadelphia or Newark, think Lehigh Valley International. It's a smaller airport but it services some of the bigger planes American, delta, united and, of course, allegiant Okay.
Speaker 2:Allegiant is okay. I think we're going to be talking about that a little later. Yep, yep, yep so let's talk about where else are we going?
Speaker 3:Well, everybody's heard of SeaTac. You know, you've heard of SeaTac. Jay, Seattle, Tacoma.
Speaker 2:No, I haven't you haven't.
Speaker 3:That's the major airport in Seattle.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 3:Okay, so we've been talking a lot about the East Coast, the South and the West, like.
Speaker 1:Texas.
Speaker 2:But this is Washington. State.
Speaker 3:That's probably one of those things that's on my bucket list, because I've never been to Seattle. You've never been to Seattle, never been to Seattle? Oh my, you have to go to Seattle. It's a great city, yes, it's a great little city. So SeaTac is the major one there and I've flown in and out of this airport. Now, I didn't find it hard to navigate. It was large but not too crazy. It was large but not too crazy. So I was surprised. But if you want less crowds, think Plainfield Airport, and this is in Snohomish County. Can you say that again? Snohomish? Can you spell that for me?
Speaker 2:S-N-O-H-O-M-I-S-H County. It must be a county in the state of Washington, right.
Speaker 3:So if you're looking up at the state of Washington on your map, you're going to go and look to the east, so it's east of SeaTac. Not too many airlines fly in and out of here, though, but there are two majors that go in and out Alaska and United, so that's pretty cool.
Speaker 2:Alaska Airlines travels quite a bit and United Airlines is a major, so if I want to go to Alaska from here, I'd probably have to fly United to this airport, snohomish.
Speaker 3:And then Plainfield Airport, and plain is P-L-A-I-N-E Wow.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 3:So just think Alaska and United. However, with this airport, it's only about 30 miles north of downtown Seattle and it's an easy car ride to Vancouver.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 3:And I've been to Vancouver as well.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Now I've driven from Seattle Airport the SeaTac Airport to a hotel. It took me over 30 minutes to get to the hotel and that was in downtown Seattle, so just keep that in mind when you're looking at this. So again, you can skip some traffic on Interstate 5.
Speaker 2:Now, what you've been saying here is that most of these airports are like 25 miles from these major areas. Well except for the one in Los Angeles, and we talked about the fact that Denver's airport is 25 miles Outside the city already. But when you think of that sucker, you go out into the prairie, you're going out on the prairie land.
Speaker 3:Right. Basically, you see the big horse with the red eyes coming into.
Speaker 1:Denver. Did you see that one?
Speaker 3:Yeah, that's kind of scary. All right, so before I get to the last of my list of smaller airports, we want to talk about a travel tip.
Speaker 2:Well, you know, and you have something to say, I've got something to say.
Speaker 3:What do you got?
Speaker 2:to say. Speaking of smaller airports, right, my wife and I were flying out of Bozeman, right, montana, which is a smaller airport, right, but it's one of those airports that's really grown.
Speaker 3:Now didn't you fly into Denver?
Speaker 2:Flew to.
Speaker 3:Denver, and then you flew back home from Bozeman Jack.
Speaker 2:So the trip was I rented a car to drive from Denver to Bozeman, Right, Okay, so the rental car company. May I say its name? You can. The rental car company Ava's tried to gouge me for 11 days that I never had the car.
Speaker 3:And you told me that you had to do a drop-off early because you guys were flying out early, so there was no person to really take your paperwork. Right, Right, right. So there was no person to really take your paperwork right, right, right.
Speaker 2:We left the car at the airport at 4 am in the morning for a 6 am flight.
Speaker 3:And then they said that you never returned the car until a certain time because they didn't file the paperwork, and blah, blah, blah.
Speaker 2:You know that's it. But finally it's taken me 22 emails back and forth. I have contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge Absolutely, and which they finally helped me with Right, and so I finally did get a credit Right. So I'm feeling much better.
Speaker 3:Okay, there's a couple of ways around this.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 3:One is when you got to the airport, you had to drop it off at a certain location. I'm feeling much better. Okay, there's a couple of ways around this. One is when you got to the airport, you had to drop it off at a certain location. I'm sure, yes, Right, Did it have a number bin that you just drove into where it says you?
Speaker 2:know A2 or whatever it did, and I think it was 54.
Speaker 3:Okay, but.
Speaker 2:I don't, I can't.
Speaker 3:Take a picture with a timestamp on your car.
Speaker 2:I can't Take a picture with a timestamp on your car. That's what I didn't do. Yeah, that's what I didn't do so.
Speaker 3:This way, you know, you could have immediately sent it to the Avis people and then I would have, upon arriving in my hometown, contact Avis to let them know hey, I parked the car in such and such and give them a heads up, because sometimes, you know, people are human and they make mistakes and they're not filing these things appropriately. So, yeah, you may run into it now. So if you had somebody like a travel agent, yes, helping you, they would have been able to talk to you and talk to them with a with a car rental with a car rental.
Speaker 3:Travel agents do car rentals as well.
Speaker 2:Now. So the only thing I had to verify the fact that I didn't have the car on that date was I took a selfie of myself and my wife at the Orlando airport at three o'clock in the afternoon, Timestamp.
Speaker 3:Luckily you had that one. So always make sure you take a picture of where you're dropping off the car, with a time stamp on it. This way, in case there's any question, they can see it. Because, again, people are human.
Speaker 2:They're not filing their paperwork on time, or the computers have a glitch and that doesn't get filed properly, and blah blah, blah, blah, blah so you know, up until today, when I was going to do this podcast, I was ready to go crazy, but at least it's been rectified and I'm feeling a little better.
Speaker 3:I knew it would get rectified. It's just a matter of time and it's a headache. Yes, so you don't want the headache?
Speaker 2:As I said, 22 different emails are asking for let me see the original Right for let me see the original Right that I had. I had a copy of the original agreement.
Speaker 3:Yeah, that's good. You always make sure you save your paper and you take the pictures. Oh, the other thing, uh-huh.
Speaker 2:And I contacted they wanted me to make. They said did you really fly out of that airport at that time, right? How do you verify that? Well, you're supposed to keep.
Speaker 3:Your ticket.
Speaker 2:And of.
Speaker 3:You didn't have it on your phone. I get a paper, jay, what am I going to do with you? We got to get you into the 20th century at least.
Speaker 2:And I talked to a representative from Southwest and she said did you keep your boarding pass? I said no. She said well, I don't either. I throw mine away too.
Speaker 3:Yeah, just make sure you have it on your phone too. Always have backup, backup, backup. Because, yes, have it on your phone too. Always have backup, backup, backup. Because, yes, we live in a computerized world and computers crash and burn and all sorts of fun stuff I'm not used to.
Speaker 2:I cannot get into this phone using the phone as my ticket.
Speaker 3:Oh, it's so easy.
Speaker 2:But but okay, so I probably should have taken a picture of that boarding pass.
Speaker 3:Absolutely.
Speaker 2:That's what I could have done.
Speaker 3:I take pictures of everything, so it's always good to have. And you talk to a lawyer and they'll say, when you fall down, take a picture right away. So always keep that in mind.
Speaker 2:So that is my travel tip.
Speaker 3:That's your travel tip. Okay, do you want to hear my travel tip? I'm not sure we have time for it, no time for it, but that's okay. There are a lot of things to do in travels and travel tips. So, jay, I only have a couple more small airports today.
Speaker 2:All right. Well, let's talk about some small airports.
Speaker 3:Okay, Thinking of going to New York City or the surrounding areas. Of course, everyone's heard of JFK.
Speaker 2:Which is a big airport. It's a monster.
Speaker 3:And LaGuardia, which is a small old airport.
Speaker 3:It's not that small, it's pretty big. I don't like flying in or out of LaGuardia, and there's a reason for it. Um, they have a short runway right and that runway is very scary, Like when you're about to take off. It's like am I going in the drink or coming down? Are we going in the drink? Are we going to make him? But they always seem to land. But I personally don't like LaGuardia. I don't mind JFK, it is a little bit more chaotic. But instead of thinking LaGuardia or JFK, think of MacArthur Airport.
Speaker 2:Where is that located?
Speaker 3:That's located in Islip, new York, which is on Long Island, and it houses Southwest American and Frontier service this airport. It houses Southwest American and Frontier service this airport. Oh, okay, so if you're thinking of considering a trip to the Hamptons or Fire Island, if you want to go into New York City New York City, the Big Apple, manhattan, it's Long Island you can jump on the railroad out there. Or, you know, I don't recommend taking a car into Manhattan. No, you really don't need one. And if you take one in there, be prepared to get cranky and aggravated. But you can jump on the railroad, long Island Railroad. It's only about a 10-minute cab drive from the airport. I've been on the Long Island Railroad. It is a commuter train. Just keep that in mind when you're on the li rr. Commuter trains are fantastic. Well, the long island railroad has some issues.
Speaker 2:It does have some issues, so just bring your patients with you, but it's an easier fix okay, yeah, um, I'm saying, if I want to fly into new york city and I'm calling southwest right, are they going to immediately run me into this airport?
Speaker 3:No, you'll have to ask for it.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 3:Because you'll say well, I want to go to New York, and that's the first thing they're going to say JFK, okay, that's going to be the first things off their lips.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 3:But you say, well, I don't want the traffic. What about MacArthur? Bring it to their attention, okay, Okay.
Speaker 2:All right.
Speaker 3:Also say that with your travel advisor, because a travel advisor is going to do the same thing. They're going to put you in the bigger airports, unless you tell them. I don't want the headache, I want to be at the smaller airport.
Speaker 2:And I'm sure my travel advisor is going to ask the right questions to make sure the person knows where they want to go.
Speaker 3:Right, where are you going, what do you want to do and how much aggravation do you want? So now, the last on my list right now is where I sometimes fly in and out of, and that's the Sanford Orlando International Airport. Yes, yes, it's very simple. It's easy to navigate. You get through the checkpoints very quickly, but need to be aware of the airlines that service the airport. I use allegiant uh-huh, okay, but I also need to watch their flight dates, because sometimes you can go but you can't always come back well, that's what I was.
Speaker 2:That is the exciting thing about that airline to me because they give you economy rates. Get you there, but you got to know you got to stay a week.
Speaker 3:Well, the whole thing is like just you know, not too long ago I was going to go out to South Dakota. Yeah, but we could get there in that month, but we would have to wait like almost two and a half months to get back, because that's when the service stopped. And then it picked back up two and a half months later. So we couldn't go at that time via the airline Wow. So we couldn't go at that time via the airline Wow. So always be aware of that.
Speaker 2:So what other airlines fly out of Stanford?
Speaker 3:Well, they also have Spirit, Sun Country and United. But remember it's an international airport, so you got to remember some of these planes will not fly in and out. You always have to double check. So just check if they fly there and if they fly out when you want to travel, just like what happened with me when I was checking the proximity to Orlando and the theme parks. It's about 30, 40 minutes as the crow flies.
Speaker 2:Absolutely.
Speaker 3:You know, and so you don't have to worry about all the craziness. And, like I said, you get in and out of that airport so easily. Right, it's a piece of cake. You don't have that craziness.
Speaker 2:So if you're coming into the Orlando area, it's another question to ask.
Speaker 3:Right, because this plane fly into.
Speaker 2:Orlando. Orlando, yeah, or Sanford, which is a smaller airport.
Speaker 3:It's a smaller airport and they too are going through some changes as well because they're building up as well, so it's not going to be as big as Orlando. And, just to let people know, Orlando is a little chaotic right now because now we have A-side, B-side and C-side in the Orlando airport, so Orlando is getting busy.
Speaker 2:It is. It's becoming very popular, and trying to find a place to park is even worse. It's becoming very popular and trying to find a place to park is even worse.
Speaker 3:Well, when I went to go pick up my sister, they closed down A-side parking and B-side parking. No, they closed down A and C and left B open, and I had to go meet her in C.
Speaker 2:C was open, I mean closed.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, Wow. Yeah, they were closing parking lots, which kind of got me a little annoyed because I had to take the tram over to that in particular side.
Speaker 2:Well, that was that's. But I used to think I could park and see at any time, you would think. But now of course they've got the railroad there.
Speaker 3:They got more building, they got the railroad there, they're doing some, and the seaside was supposed to be only for international flights, but now JetBlue is on that side as well, so just keep that in mind when you're going to pick up people as well. So if you hate those large and chaotic airports, check on some of those smaller ones that might be near you and the way you want to go.
Speaker 2:This is like opening up a new idea for me. I mean like ask there might be another airport to go to Because you just think of well, I want to go to Boston, right? I?
