Oh no, are we are are this a podcast? This is a podcast.
SPEAKER_01:I'm ready.
SPEAKER_00:And as we not know how we have you on the air with us today, of course it's Jay Lawrence.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, back from uh years of travel.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Well, I'm Z Michelson, of course, and welcome to the Z Michelson Travel Podcast, where we are exploring the world. We are talking with travel experts. We are talking with travelers, just like Jay.
SPEAKER_01:There's someone in my car, and there's police over there. Am I parked in the wrong place or something?
SPEAKER_00:No, I think he traveled into chasing somebody.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, good.
SPEAKER_00:We're we're outside recording.
SPEAKER_01:So you didn't want to see my cartoon. Early in January.
SPEAKER_00:No, no, no, no. You don't want that. But that's like three rows back, so I don't think you're that. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_00:You're not that far back.
SPEAKER_01:We, of course, are on location our favorite. We have so much history on this location.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, we are at, we're gonna give it a cheap, shameless plug. We're at Starbucks. Yeah. Yes, we're at Starbucks, you're enjoying your coffee. I'm enjoying my uh Preppuccino. It's a lovely day here in Florida. It's about 70 degrees. I know a lot of the nation right now in the month of January is a little nippy. But January is the perfect time to talk about cruising because it's wave season. Yes. That's kind of like the Black Friday of buying getting on a cruise. Oh wow. And Jay, you went on a Disney cruise.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, I went on my first Disney cruise just before Christmas. Oh, what was the ship, do you remember? The Dream. Oh, the Disney Dream. Yes. One of the older ships in the fleet.
SPEAKER_00:Right. And Disney's ships are not that old to begin with, but and I'm sure they always.
SPEAKER_01:I was there with 4,000 other fads just 4,000? Just 4,000.
SPEAKER_00:And you went, of course, with your lovely wife.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, and the rest of the family.
SPEAKER_00:And grandchildren were there?
SPEAKER_01:Yes. Yes. Except mother was under the weather to start with, so that kind of slowed things down. Oh no. And one grandson got sick. Oh no. Yeah. And so It was kind of like, well, what are we going to do now? Too much excitement for the kidney? Listen, we had we had one, two, three, four suites. And all had the balcony. And they opened the balcony up so all four of us could be connected, yeah. And that was kind of cool.
SPEAKER_00:That's fun.
SPEAKER_01:That was kind of cool.
SPEAKER_00:So you had four four cabins all kind of connecting via the balconies.
SPEAKER_01:Via the balcony, yes.
SPEAKER_00:That's nice. Now, how old are the kids? That was only properly.
SPEAKER_01:Well, one's in seventh grade and one's in fourth grade. Oh, so nice. The nice age. Yes, the the right age.
SPEAKER_00:Right age to Disney. So this is your first time on the ship.
SPEAKER_01:If you check back on another podcast, their ages will be different probably, but I'm trying to get them right once in a while.
SPEAKER_00:They're they're a Disney age, which is really good.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00:And Disney has a lot of things for the kids. Yes. And also a lot of things for the adults.
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:So what did you do?
SPEAKER_01:Well, first off, um I live in Orlando. I mean Orlando.
SPEAKER_00:Outside of Orlando from Duth.
SPEAKER_01:And so we drove to Fort Lauderdale, though. We the ship was on a Fort Lauderdale. Okay.
SPEAKER_00:So Disney does dock in Port Canaveral.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, yes. We drove to Fort Lauderdale, got a hotel the night before. That's the way to do it. I totally recommend that. And in the future.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01:Before you go. That way you're up in the morning, you're on the ship at one o'clock, you don't have to worry about getting to the ship for one o'clock.
SPEAKER_00:It's it's I also do recommend a stay at night when they come back. Yeah. Particularly if they get a flyout.
SPEAKER_01:Right.
SPEAKER_00:So it's always good to have that extra day.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:So you stayed at in Fort Lauderdale's?
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:And what particular hotel? Uh Hampton Inn.
SPEAKER_01:Hampton. Hampton Inn. Hampton Inn. That might Hampton Points. Oh, good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:So you did Hampton Inn and then the next day you got on the ship. Now, were the kids also staying in night in Fort Lauderdale? So everybody kind of we kind of embarked at the same time.
SPEAKER_01:Got together there.
SPEAKER_00:How many of all how many in all were you?
SPEAKER_01:Ten.
SPEAKER_00:Are you sure you have enough fingers? I'm watching you count on your fingers.
SPEAKER_01:Because we had the largest table in all the dining rooms. Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. So tell us a little bit about the Disney experience. Okay. You're ready? I'm ready for it. I was not wowed. You weren't wowed. No. Were you not wowed because it caters more to the children? No, I don't think so. Really? Yes. What made you unwood?
SPEAKER_01:I've been on several other cruises. Right. It just seemed to be the same kind of thing. Oh, really? Yeah. To me. It was to me. Now, you know, someone else could have enjoyed it a little differently. Okay. But I would the word is I was not wowed by the Disney clues.
SPEAKER_00:We weren't folded over. Yeah. I mean, because the Disney Cruise has uh entertainments. Did you go to the entertainment?
SPEAKER_01:Yes, we went to two shows. Two shows, yes. And they were good. Yeah, they were good. Were they were they character shows?
SPEAKER_00:Were they just music and entertainment?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Now, was that for everybody?
SPEAKER_01:Do the kids go to different shows? Well, but and speaking of shows, we saw zoo, what is that? Zootopia to Zootopia too. So on the ship, yes.
SPEAKER_00:Because they do have movies.
SPEAKER_01:Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_00:So Disney does have movies for the kids.
SPEAKER_01:Amazing. They have movies.
SPEAKER_00:And I and some of their ships have two fiatans for movies.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:I don't I don't know that in particular. They've only had one. Yeah. But I know that they have private areas for the adults to get away from the kids.
SPEAKER_01:Yes. I spent some time there. And how was that? Comfortable. Comfortable. All right. You're kind of like I know what you can't remember when they call it the 11th deck. So you're on deck 11th. The Alito deck.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:And all the food. And then behind the curtains, behind the wall, you could get into the adult section.
SPEAKER_00:Ah, so the adult area. So you can kind of break away from the kids a little bit. And that's what I always recommend. If you're not into Disney and you don't have any children, Disney may not be the ship for you to go on. Yeah. Because it is definitely catering to children. They do have the Disney characters. It is an experience for Disney.
SPEAKER_01:You know what? I don't think I saw a Disney character on four.
SPEAKER_00:How could you not have seen a Disney character?
SPEAKER_01:I wasn't in the right room.
SPEAKER_00:Well, you kept going to the adult, Ari, but they do have the characters on board and they do have the things for the kids. Now, what I did notice on some of the tours that I've done on their ships are there are a lot of lounges for the adults to go to.
SPEAKER_01:Oh. Oh, William Wishabon Star. Right. Yeah. Went to the pink lounge on the last night on the ship. The pink lounge was cabaret Broadway shows. Oh, very cool. Guy on the piano and just a very intimate little right. And my wife ordered a champagne cocktail, and it was only$33. Was that all?
SPEAKER_00:Now I'm going to ask this. Now, do they have because I know I know that Disney does have a price point. Did you uh order the cocktail package or the key package?
SPEAKER_01:We didn't know about it. I don't think they have it. We asked Kyle about that and they had beer packages, but that was about it.
SPEAKER_00:Right. So they didn't have they didn't have a lot of that.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. But I I know there's plenty of booze on Disney for the work.
SPEAKER_01:We could we could purchase that, yes. And it was okay. We did okay.
SPEAKER_00:Right. So you did okay. Now, what about pools and rock climbing walls, anything like that?
SPEAKER_01:Well, they had pools. They also had uh a slide, a water slide around the deck, of which I didn't want to take place of, you know. Well, you're you're not much into swimming. Right. The yeah, the exciting thing was my wife and I played miniature golf one day. Oh, okay. And uh I won. Incredible.
SPEAKER_00:You haven't played golf in a long time. I don't think either one of you have.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, my wife was a golf screen.
SPEAKER_00:I'm so I kind of Well, it's because it was miniature golf.
SPEAKER_01:It's miniature golf, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:So they do have miniature golf, they do have slides, they had a great basketball court on deck.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, fabulous. It was all screened in, right? You know, netted in. So the basketball doesn't go over the guys, young guys were playing. It was really fun to see.
SPEAKER_00:Now, did you see was there a lot of people in your age demographic?
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:There was. And do you believe that they were there with their families? Most of them. It was multi-gen.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:So they were doing multi-generational trips. Yeah. That's what Disney is really known for. Grandma, grandpa, mother, father, and kids. And that's what they came into. Now, some things that you're not telling me right now, and I want to know, is what was the food like?
SPEAKER_01:Oh, great. I'm glad you asked. Yeah. Unique on Disney planning is you have your assigned dining one night, and you go to another dining room the next night, and the night after that we went to another dining room. Right, you traveled. But the staff stays with you. Right. So the same server is serving you at all all the time. So they they remember who you are. Yeah, yeah. And so um you went to the enchanted garden. Enchanting garden. The uh Oh, I knew I was gonna remember this. That Royal Royal Dining Room. Right. And then animation.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, okay. So you had you weren't on the ship that long. What was it, a four night? Three night. Three night. Yeah, three nights. So you did one of the short, short Disney cruises. Now, did you go to their private island? Yes. Okay. The ship did. The ship did go to the private island. The lookout key. Jay Jay never got off the ship, it sounds like it just didn't feel like getting off the ship. Well, that's something that you can do. You don't have to get off on the private island. So tell me about the food in each one of these restaurants.
SPEAKER_01:The food in the restaurant for dinner was excellent. Very good. What did you have? Give me an example. Uh one night I'm sure we had steak. I don't remember all of the menus. I should have taken a note of it.
SPEAKER_00:Jane, you always have steak on these cruises.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, yes. Um but the uh Okay, so on day two, we ate at the uh Royal Dining Room, and the the Major Deus said, Come back tomorrow morning for breakfast. Right. We'll have breakfast for you. You can eat down here instead of going to the Leto thing. Right, because that's the buffet. Yes, the buffet. So uh my wife and I sit down. We get checked in and you know it's okay. It took me forever to hit a cup of coffee at that point. But you know, they don't have coffee in the rooms, you gotta go out together. Oh so I have you know, waiting for the coffee. Um I ordered I ordered blueberry pancakes with hash brands. Okay. These were the worst pancakes I've ever had in my life. Really?
SPEAKER_00:My and this was at the restaurant, not at the buffets.
SPEAKER_01:At the restaurant, yes. Interesting. They were like cardboard. Really? They were uh it was almost hard to cut with a knife. Wow. Now my wife had um ex benedict. Right. Cold, not really good. Oh, you know? Okay, so I pull over the Maitre Ding. Right. I say, This is the worst meal I've ever had. Right. I tell 'em, you know. Right. I said, you know, I've been in the restaurant business. I thought people should know if they do or do not like it. So I'm telling you, this is terrible. Right. I could have gone to McDonald's and got a better breakfast. Okay. That's what I told him. Right. So what did he do? He was panicking. Oh, he was panicking. Can I bring out the chef? Can I bring out the chef? He'll chef the chef will take care of you. What's the chef gonna do? I don't know.
SPEAKER_00:They'll redo it fresh.
SPEAKER_01:I don't think so. Those pancakes came out of a out of a box.
SPEAKER_00:Well, that's that's the whole thing. Lately, the cruise lines are starting to do a little bit different on the foods. Yeah. Now, did you go to the buffet for breakfast at all? Yes. And how was that?
SPEAKER_01:Enjoyable. Other than fighting for a seat. Okay. You know, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, so there's there's a one inside Kib. No to the buffet.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. A wider variety.
SPEAKER_00:Right. So go to the buffet, it'll be a little bit better. Um, sometimes the restaurants do get a little for breakfast. Yeah. But the restaurants at night were excellent. Yes. Right. Exatin itself. Can you tell there's a big car going past us racing down the road? You're at Starbucks. Right.
SPEAKER_01:In Central Florida.
SPEAKER_00:Right. So now you've had a breakfast that was not to your liking.
SPEAKER_01:So the next day, the next morning, actually, in the uh in the animation restaurant, the Matrix D came over and was still apologetic.
SPEAKER_00:Right, because we got the same people all the time.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, they offered us a bottle of champagne. Oh, on the house? Yeah. Well, I wouldn't take it any other way. Except for my wife ordering a champagne cotton$33. But my wife is worth it, you know.
SPEAKER_00:Yes. Now she she enjoyed that, I'm sure, but you've asked the bottle of champagne, and that was the dinner when you went to the animation.
SPEAKER_01:Actually, it was for breakfast. It was breakfast dinner. I mean, it was the breakfast the next morning.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, well, you went to the animation for breakfast.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Oh. Now what about dinner? Did you go to the animation that night? Do you stay with the same restaurant?
SPEAKER_01:I guess we had gone to an animation. Maybe it was the animation night. Right. The dinner, yeah. Right. Yeah. And so I uh we drank a little champagne. It wasn't exactly the I'm not a champagne person. It wasn't a job parallel. No, the people was in the head. At the paint club.
SPEAKER_00:It was. Yeah. So now tell me, you're allowed to go to the same restaurant, breakfast and dinner.
SPEAKER_01:Uh no, I don't think so. I didn't realize that. I don't know. The one day he said, come on back tomorrow morning here at the restaurant and we'll share now. We were a party of ten, like I said. Right. And the royal. In the royal dining room. We had the large circular table. Right. The biggest table in the house.
SPEAKER_00:Right, because there was so many there. Well, it was you and your wife, her daughter and husband, and two kids. So that six right there.
SPEAKER_01:Two got the other daughter. The other daughter and her husband. That's eight. And then and their couple of kids. Joe's father and mother.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, okay. So you had we had downstream, we had all the adults. Now, did you let the kids go and you the adults just kind of went with the city?
SPEAKER_01:The kids they know enough now to uh oh yes.
SPEAKER_00:They're Disney cruisers.
SPEAKER_01:I'm trying to think if there's one other thing I wanted to share with you about uh dinner arrangements, but we can talk later.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, so now you've gone to dinner a couple of times, you've been to the island, but you didn't get off. Did did any of you get off the ship?
SPEAKER_01:Times went off.
SPEAKER_00:Timinica went off the ship.
SPEAKER_01:She walked, walked it and came back early, as far as I was concerned. Uh I you know, I looked at the itinerary for the island, it looked like all they wanted you to do was spend more money.
SPEAKER_00:Well, yeah, because that's what most of the islands are. I'm I always I'm just a little uh, you know, a little folded you're a little frugal. Well again, this is Disney. If you get into a Disney experience, the Disney cruise limes, Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Paris, Disney you you're gonna pay.
SPEAKER_01:You know, I wanted the uh I want one of those coasters. Right. I wanted to get a coaster from the Pink Lounge. Right. My wife said, no, you don't. We probably have to pay ten dollars, twenty dollars.
SPEAKER_00:Gotta pay for the coaster.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Well, yes, and it it is a Disney experience, but the kids love it. And like you said, you didn't see any of the characters, and now we have a helicopter fly lower us. Welcome where you are. But they have a lot of things to do on there for the kids. Now, one thing the Disney ships do not have, I have to point this out, is there's no gambling.
SPEAKER_01:Correct. I appreciate that, but I I'm for that.
SPEAKER_00:No gambling on Disney cruise lines, and this one's a fairly smaller ship, I believe.
SPEAKER_01:4,000 people, so that's small.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's a small one.
SPEAKER_01:No, no.
SPEAKER_00:Because they're the newer ones are going up to 8,000. Oh, this one.
SPEAKER_01:Okay. And they're at the ranch track again. That's what I wanted to share with you about being on the ship.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:You know, you can walk down the Sarah. We were on deck five. You walk down and around, you know, it's it's you always it's a two-step process. Right. Right. We were turned around every time we couldn't figure out fast and four.
SPEAKER_00:You couldn't figure out the front, the back, the left, the right.
SPEAKER_01:We were out.
SPEAKER_00:So now usually there are all little tricks.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, what's the trick?
SPEAKER_00:Sometimes it's the carpeting. The carpeting sometimes is different. Uh the left to the right, the port to the starboard side. Sometimes you'll look at the carpeting. Sometimes you'll see the carpeting has some sort of arrows that they're not really arrows, but they're dick.
SPEAKER_01:We finally figured that out. We'll walk through the district. But several of the uh several of the nightclubs were yeah. Yeah.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Disney ships are very pretty. They're very nice, they're very large. Um, some of their newer ships, when you come on board, you're already in the center of the ship. Right. Those are the newer ones. So, and they may have their balcony that that's where the characters come out to introduce themselves. So some of it's the designs are a little bit different. Yeah. So you were on a different, you were on one of the older ones. You're off in the dream of California Dream County. Yeah, California Dream.
SPEAKER_01:Out in out in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
SPEAKER_00:Fort Lauderdale, California. Why do I keep saying California? Because that's that's the commercial California dream is right, right. Right. And I've been to Disneyland, which is in California. Yes. And I've been to Disney World, which is Florida. We live in Florida. And I also, you know, my daughter's been to several other Disneys around the world. Around Malorn. Yeah, my daughter's been to Paris. Yeah. She's a big Disney character person.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so that's what incidents. I came. Would you go again? Uh yeah, I think I will. Now and the getting off the ship. You know how it's usually a very big cluster?
SPEAKER_00:Right.
SPEAKER_01:Disney, I think, really does it right.
SPEAKER_00:Okay, how do they do it?
SPEAKER_01:They serve you breakfast. And then and then your you know tags your, you know, are is way more clothes. And then they give you a number, and you know, if you've matched we were chicken dale, you know, then you could go off. So then the line to get off to to wipe out Right, it's not as chaotic.
SPEAKER_00:It's not as chaotic.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. I thought that was a really good thing. Right. Now that's that's very popular.
SPEAKER_00:And your breakfast. Yes. I've I've been on several cruise lines that are eat first and then get off. And then now they're doing different things on the cruise lines where you don't have to get off at the crack of dawn. So there are there are different cruise lines. Well, that's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01:I always hate that.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Yep.
SPEAKER_01:Off listening. Yeah, such a good time, but now it's good. Down.
SPEAKER_00:So you spent several days on the ship. How was the weather when you went?
SPEAKER_01:Excellent.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Excellent. The amazing thing is leaving from the Orlando area to in Fort Lauderdale or Miami area. Temperature lows. Right. It's amazing how far south.
SPEAKER_00:Right. And it's not that far south.
SPEAKER_01:No.
SPEAKER_00:So you had nice temperature and it only went to the one island.
SPEAKER_01:One island?
SPEAKER_00:You didn't dock anywhere else.
SPEAKER_01:No. Well, yes, Jamaica. Oh, you did go to Jamaica. Which, of course, I did not get off. But this isn't maybe. Jay, you never get off the ships. Why? Why? It's you got the hotel you're living in. So we're docking. Right. Over here is a strip of island. It's a jettison on the deck. And it looks like um uh MS uh uh World Caribbean. World Caribbean has that that's gonna be like a strip. Have you heard about that? Yes. What what's the deal on that?
SPEAKER_00:And a lot of the cruise lines are having their own ports that are coming in so they don't have to tender in. Uh-huh. And if people don't know what tendering means, it's the ship is too large to dock at the port, so they'll dock further out, and then they have smaller boats that will take you into the port. That's tendering in. So they're building more dots that are capable of handling these larger ships. So that's probably what was going on.
SPEAKER_01:I thought it was very interesting here. Yeah. I I know a little bit about the travel industry, and I decided that'd be nice to know.
SPEAKER_00:I remember here as we go, and I kept telling me you gotta get on a ship, and now you're always on a ship. Well, not all, and you've been on quite a bit. So that's really good. So you said you would definitely go again. I probably will go again because the family will go again. The family will go again, and it's a good family experience. Disney does it right when it comes to family. Multi-generations are really top of the mark for Disney. And what you what you have is multi-gen.
SPEAKER_01:And you know, the weekend of January 7th through the 11th, right. It's the uh Disney uh marathon recend. 7th through the 11th. Disney World, yeah. And uh my wife's daughter participates in all of those.
SPEAKER_00:She runs in the so guess what?
SPEAKER_01:Guess where I'll be.
SPEAKER_00:You'll be down at Disney.
SPEAKER_01:I'm listening again, huh?
SPEAKER_00:Right, but you'll be at Disney World.
SPEAKER_01:Right.
SPEAKER_00:Right. And my daughter's father-in-law and brother-in-law also compete. Yep. As a matter of fact, that's where my my daughter's sister-in-law was proposed to by brother-in-law. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I was thinking about uh trying to do the 5K myself.
SPEAKER_00:Have fun. What do you like getting up at 3 o'clock in the morning?
SPEAKER_01:Good morning. Getting in there. Oh, wow. We had a 4,000 other people.
SPEAKER_00:Well, again, it is January when we're recording this, and it is wave season. Wave season is like the Black Friday of pricing for cruise lines. Contact your travel advisors, tell them you want to even get on Disney or one of the other multiple wonderful cruise lines that we have right here in the state of Florida. Because we have Port Canaveral, we have Fort Lawrencedale, we have Miami, and we have Tampa and Jacksonville. So there are plenty of places to get on these ships.
SPEAKER_01:Oh yes.
SPEAKER_00:And sailing is an experience that you have to enjoy yourself. And you don't have to do everything.
SPEAKER_01:Right.
SPEAKER_00:You can sit back and relax poolside, or you can sit in the lounge, or poolside thing.
SPEAKER_01:I uh it's the funniest thing. There's an ocean out here, and we got a swimming pool in here. I don't get it.
SPEAKER_00:And sometimes the swimming pool is closed in. You know, if you're going to Alaska, sometimes it's a little nippy.
SPEAKER_01:Well, I yes, I'm not going to Alaska in a swimming pool.
SPEAKER_00:Not yet, anyway. Yeah. Well, I went overseas. I was over, I was in the furthest part north overseas.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And I had a swimming pool, but it had it was enclosed. Yes. It was like a matrium, which was nice. You can go swimming, the pool water was heated. And even though it was July up in the Orkney Islands, I was wearing a coat and gloves.
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:It's a little nippy up there since you're in the north quadrant of the world. Right. Well, Jay, where are you going to next?
SPEAKER_01:I have no idea.
SPEAKER_00:I don't believe you.
SPEAKER_01:I'm going to Disney World.
SPEAKER_00:If you're in Disney World, think you'll be spending some time there again. Yes. Well, thank you for joining me today. And again, thank you everybody for listening. Remember it is wave season. Try to get your travel advisors to get you on board some of these fabulous ships. Thank you for listening. I am Z Michelson, and remember what I always say shoot for the stars, and if they only get to the moon, at least you made the trip.
