Welcome And Solo Travel Mission

Speaker 3

Hello and welcome to Traveling Solo on z Michelson Travel Podcast, a zm E travel radio production presented by Collage Travel Media Network. And of course, I'm z Michelson. I'm a travel advisor, a media host, and an advocate for all of those solo travelers who refuse to wait to see the world. This is where independence meets intention and where you learn to travel solo with confidence.

Why Celtic Tours Fits Solo Travelers

Speaker 2

Hey, this is Z Michelson and as I have promised over the last couple of weeks, I am gonna be talking with vendors and travelers alike about solo travel. And today with me in the studio, I have Diana from Celtic Tours. Welcome back Diana.

Speaker

Hi. Glad to be back. Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 2

And I know Celtic Tours does a lot with solo travelers, so tell me a little bit more.

Speaker

Well, you know, Celtic Tours has decades of experience crafting immersive travel experiences for all types of travelers. Not just, uh, you know, couples or, but for solo travelers. In particular the itineraries make solo traveling feel really, really effortless and. Easy. We make things really, really easy for anybody who wants to travel on their own.

Speaker 2

And that's something that's very important to the solo traveler.'cause some people that are just learning to travel solo, they get concerned. They're a little afraid. Mm-hmm. And if the company is making them feel, you know, great and easy to follow. This is something that Celtic Tourists does,

Where They Go Beyond Ireland

Speaker

yo, absolutely. And one of the, the nice things, especially with our escorted tour, is that we are small group travel. So all of our groups are anywhere from from 10 to 28. Uh, we do have one that goes to. 32 people. So it's a very, very small, intimate group. So if you're traveling solo, you are not gonna be with 40 or 50 strangers. You're gonna be in a more intimate experience.

Speaker 2

And it's funny that you're telling me this, because that was on my last podcast I was talking about go with a smaller group.

Speaker

Right?

Speaker 2

Mm-hmm.

Speaker

Yeah, it does, it definitely does make a difference. Um, it because the group size, it makes them more intimate. So solo travelers feel more welcome. They, um, they're not lost in a crowd of people. They actually, you know, get to know everybody, and it's a more of a friendship kind of setting.

Speaker 2

So when you're doing this. When somebody calls and says they wanna be a solo traveler, they'll either call their travel advisor and say they want to do this. Now, does Celtic tours only focus on certain areas for the solo traveler?

Speaker

Oh, absolutely not. You know, Celtic Tours does all of Europe, so we have, uh, several different adventures and, and let's say for example they do wanna escort it tour, we can go to, Scotland. You can go to England, Wales. Of course anywhere in the United Kingdom mm-hmm. As well as Italy, Germany, we are having the Christmas markets.

Speaker 2

Oh, that's

Speaker

fun. Uh, yeah. The Christmas markets are coming, uh, very, very soon. So we're gonna have Christmas markets. And we just added Greece this year as well. So we have all different types of experiences. It's not just Ireland. We, travel all over Europe. We've kind of grown organically in our 53 years of, of being around. So,

Speaker 2

and again, you keep the, you keep the tours on a smaller level?

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 2

So people will feel like they're part of the family. One of my sayings is travel solo, but not alone.

Speaker

Correct. Yeah, exactly.

Safety And Guided Support

Speaker 2

So that's, that's what's nice about it. Now, a lot of my solo travelers are saying, well, what about safety? How is that looked after?

Single Supplements And Chauffeur Drives

Speaker

Well, of course that's number one. No matter who you're, where you're going, where you're traveling, that is number one, is safety. Mm-hmm. And of course, with our escorting tours, safety comes first. You're always with a guide. You're, you know, our guides make sure that you get every place, every location, and then you get to know your fellow travelers. So they're not gonna, you know, you're gonna wanna go with them to dinner, you're gonna wanna go locations, you're gonna wanna explore with them. Mm-hmm. So,, safety of course is always, always first.

Speaker 2

Now, you know, I know there are solo travel prices, so how does Celtic Tours work that for the solo traveler?

Speaker

Well, it does depend on how you wanna travel, you know? Escorted, you know that that's where everything is taken care of for you. So we do have a single supplement, but our single supplement isn't a double single supplement. It's not like, you know, you would do on a cruise line where they charge you double the cost. It does depend on the tour that you're doing. It can be anywhere from, you know,$200 on, up to maybe four or$500, depending on your chore itself.

Speaker 2

So that's nice.

Speaker

It is, it's very nice. There is a single supplement, but it's minor compared to some of the other. Places that you would book for a single. And then if, of course, if you wanna do a, a self-drive or a chauffeur drive even, we don't charge single supplements at that particular, you know, point. There is no, there's no single supplement for that. So

Speaker 2

a chauffeur drive, oh, I'd like to be chauffeured around.

Speaker

Yeah, you kick back and you enjoy the scenery. Mm-hmm. And you get a private chauffeur. And I actually did have a client who did that, and she did all of Ireland that way.

Speaker 2

Oh wow.

Speaker

the chauffeur would come and pick her up and he would take her to her next location, and then she. She would do day tours at her next location to show her as he's driving her, you know, around from place to place different, areas. He would tell her all about, Ireland and all of the nice, historical things about Ireland. So it was really, it was really, really nice.

Speaker 2

And she was traveling on her own.

Speaker

And she was traveling on her own? Yes.

Speaker 2

Fabulous.

Speaker

She was. She travels always on her own.

Speaker 2

She likes it.

Speaker

Yeah, she does. Mm-hmm. She enjoys it.

Speaker 2

I know a lot of people that are listening to my broadcast are always. Saying, well, this is the first time I'm doing it. I'm a little nervous. And then some just love it.

Speaker

Yeah,

Speaker 2

yeah. After, once they get their their feet wet, so to speak, they just love to go because you know, sometimes they don't have somebody to go with and you wanna go and do it.

Finding Locals And Hidden Gems

Speaker

Yeah, yeah. And you get to explore. One of the things that I do travel by.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

Uh, often just because of my line of work,

Speaker 2

right?

Speaker

So I travel by myself often, and one of the things that I love about it is that you get to talk to the locals. If I go into some place, you know, and I'm, I'm talking to the locals and I say, well, where, where would you go? You know, or I'll go to the hotel, where would you go? You know, instead of going to some place, you know, that's very, very touristy. I like the back woods, you know, I like kind of going in the back and. Seeing where the locals would go and then just experiencing that culture in a completely different way. And I'm not following anybody else. I'm not, I don't have to be with anybody else. I don't have to, I can do anything that I wanna do on my own pace and on my own

Speaker 2

level. Right.

Speaker

So, and I, I really, really enjoy that,

Speaker 2

That is a lot of fun sometimes just exploring.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And DIC tours, because you can do individual type tours. They will guide these people. They go to their tour guide or whomever, and they say, well, where can I go eat? And they'll, they'll kind of send you in a direction. So you don't feel alone.

Speaker

No, absolutely. I mean it, we'll even put an entire itinerary together with you, with suggestions for you. Right? So let's say you're a solo traveler and you're not doing an escort tour, you're doing something on your own. We'll put that entire itinerary together with your accommodations, with. However it is that you wanna get from place to place, whether it be chauffeur, train, you wanna go ahead and, uh, drive a car any way you wanna go, we would put that entire experience together and we'll give you suggestions. We'll tell you, oh, try this restaurant, do this because we've been there. We know the locations. So we definitely want you to, have an enjoyable, comfortable vacation.

Speaker 2

So, will Celtic tours also put together, like if they want to go to a museum or things like that? Mm-hmm. Celtic Tour says that as well. They'll put the whole package together.

Speaker

The whole package. So let's say, in Ireland, they wanna go see the. Book of keels, you know? Mm-hmm. So, of course we'll go ahead and add the tickets for that, or they wanna go to Jameson or Guinness, you know, we'll go ahead and put those, in there for them. Mm-hmm. So everything is taken care of for'em. You know, one of the things that I do recommend at a lot of locations, not just. Ireland, but, there's, they're probably at almost any major city,, England hop on hop offs. Absolutely. You know, you, those are probably the best. And we can actually book those for you. So you can just hop on, one of the buses and then, you know, go ahead and hop off and go to your next location. It is just a great way to explore on your own

Speaker 2

Right. We call'em hop on, hop off. They're like a bus pass,

Tickets And Hop On Hop Off

Speaker

right? They are. Exactly. Yep. And they're, they're located all over your own. Especially in the larger cities

Speaker 2

now, how, how are the accommodations for a solo travel?

Speaker

So, obviously it depends on where you travel, but the accommodations now, the accommodations that we use are always three star and above and any of the locations throughout Europe, we always make sure it's very, very comfortable. Great locations. Typically we like to do city centers so that we can walk other locations. And also they're, vetted. So we, they're very safe. They're, clean. They're, some of'em, you know, like I said, there are five star locations. Right.

Speaker 2

Some people don't understand what vetted means. Do you wanna explain that?

Speaker

Yeah. So that means that we go in and we make sure that,, these are locations that we wanna sell. We're very, very. Particular, we haven't been in business for 53 years being in such a small company.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

You know, without knowing what we're doing. So when we, offer accommodations, we make sure that it's someplace that, it's clean, it's, friendly, secure. We always make sure that it is a place that I would personally wanna stay.

Speaker 2

As

Speaker

well. Yeah.

Speaker 2

So that's something that's very, very important, particularly if you're traveling solo and if it's your first time traveling solo, you wanna be able to feel safe, you wanna be able to feel part of the group. And you don't want people questioning why are you by yourself?

Speaker

Yeah. And you want it stress free. You wanna be able to enjoy yourself. You wanna be able to, you know, go there and not have to worry. Okay, what's this? This, this, and this. You know? And I think that's, one of the things that solo travelers are afraid of. You know, they're afraid that they're gonna have to put everything together. No, let us do it for you. Let us put everything together. Let us put your, your transportation, your accommodations, your everything,

Speaker 2

right?

Speaker

So you don't have to, it should be stress free and should be an enjoyable vacation for you,

St Patrick's Day Tours In Dublin

Speaker 2

right? So that makes, it, makes it easier. So what else? Does Celtic tours do for the solo traveler?

Speaker

Well, of course we, offer, like I said, uh, many different locations. What about St. Patrick's Day? You know, doing St. Patrick's Day? We just ended St. Patrick's Day and every year it is a huge, huge festival in Dublin and, it's vibrant. Street parades, joyful crowds. I mean, it just really, really makes for an unforgettable experience and it can be done at your own pace.

Speaker 2

That's nice.

Speaker

Yeah, exactly. So, and then of course we also every year have an amazing escorted tour that we do in case somebody did wanna travel with others.

Speaker 2

Mm-hmm.

Speaker

Um, and every year we have an amazing, St. Patrick's Day, tour that we do where you're actually in Dublin for St. Patrick's Day, and you see the parade. Because you know, in Ireland, they don't just celebrate for one day. No, no, no, no, no. They celebrate for four days. Three days before St. Patrick's Day and ending on St. Patrick's Day. So you, if you get there, let's say you get there, you know, the 15th, you know you've got the 16th and 17th in Dublin, and you celebrate and then you go on and. You'll go to maybe Waterford or you'll go to, Kalani or, uh, cliffs Moore, you know? So then, so, so

there's

Speaker

so

Speaker 2

much.

Speaker

We add other things into the trips.

Speaker 2

Now, one of the trips that you had talked about in one of our past podcast was where you meet a matchmaker or something like that.

Speaker

Oh Our. Matchmaker. That is an amazing experience. It's called,, the Matchmaking Festival. There are so many festivals in Ireland, Scotland, uh, there's just so many

Speaker 2

festivals. They know how to celebrate.

Speaker

Yeah. They, they really, really do. And this isn't, and as I said, you know, it's not a one day festival. No, no, no. The Liz Var matchmaking Festival is from September the first through September the 30th. It is entire month of nothing but matchmaking. It is Europe's most iconic singles festival. So, if you wanna go meet the love of your life, you know, this is, this is the place. To do it. Thousands of people actually flocked this small, charming little town, and actually, they celebrate with music and dancing and, you are there with other solo travelers, so you're not by yourself. And it's an all ultimate mix of fun, freedom, and absolute possibilities.

Speaker 2

I'll say. It sounds like, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Speaker

It

Speaker 2

really, I, I'm married. I can't do that.

Speaker

Well, and there's, you know, there is also, um, Mr. Willie Daley. Mr. Willie Daley is a legendary matchmaker. He is actually known as the Last Matchmaker. He has a book and everything.

Speaker 2

Wow.

Speaker

And there's this cozy little bar, it's called the, last Matchmaker, or it's called, I'm sorry, the Matchmaker Bar. And it's a traditional Irish match, traditional Irish bar. And, there's all kinds of stories and people, uh, talk about the lucky love. Book, which is Mr. Willie's book. And, you can actually go over and meet Mr. Willie Daley and talk to him about meeting the, the man or woman of your dreams. And, it's just, a amazing festival that's just filled with, it's so much, and again, it's a whole month long. So there's. There's a lot of energy. There's, food all over the place. There's, um, it, it's just a lot of fun. They have daily music dancing themed weekend events, including the outing, which is for the L-G-B-T-Q Oh, wow. Yeah. Event. And so they, you know, it's, it's open to everybody.

Italy And Christmas Markets Across Europe

Speaker 2

Everybody from home. Yeah. And, you know, people have a misunderstanding here from the United States how. Pubs really work in Ireland. Pubs are more family friendly than they realize. So tell me a little bit more about the pubs over there.

Speaker

Yeah, the pubs are, so in Ireland, the pubs are, are, you walk in and, and everybody in Ireland is just so welcoming and so friendly and, they have local people that will go and set up and start playing music traditional. Irish music and folk music and it, everybody just joins in and they start singing and every, again, it's just a friendly place to go. Every time I go to Ireland, I always sit at the bar and I always, always strike up a conversation.

Speaker 2

They've never met a stranger,

Speaker

never met a stranger. Never, ever. Yeah. And, and the matchmaking bar is, is no different, you know, there. And since Mr. Willie Daley is there, you know, I think I mentioned this in one of my past podcasts, right? That the, the Irish Sheriff. Full of legends and folk, stories. Oh, they can to New York? Yes, yes, yes they can. Yes they can. And so they say that if you go over to Mr. Willie Daley and you touch that book that he has full of his matches,

Speaker 2

right?

Speaker

That you'll be married within six months. Ooh.

Speaker 2

So

Speaker

I'm looking for somebody to go over there and test it out for me and let me know if it works. Because I'm married, I can't do it.

Speaker 2

I can't do it

Speaker

either. Yeah. So we need

Speaker 2

to, I'm gonna have to go and look at my, my book here.

Speaker

We need somebody to go over and check it out for us. So

Speaker 2

not only does Celtic Tour deal a lot with Ireland, Scotland, and England. But you also go to other locations. Mm-hmm. Where are some of the other places that you go?

Speaker

Well, I'll tell you, one of my favorite places, is Italy, of course. Mm-hmm. You know, I, I think I've mentioned this in one of my other podcasts as well, but, Italy's just such a beautiful country and there is a great place in Tuscany that, we put you, it's right in one location, so you stay in one location for the entire time and you can go explore all of Tuscany. You can go to Sienna Pizza, ano, you can go all over Tuscany, you're 30 minutes from Florence. So, just beautiful, beautiful place. We have, cooking classes there. Mm-hmm.

Speaker 2

You

Speaker

know, especially for solos who wanna learn how to cook. Mama Anna is just absolutely amazing. She does also wine tastings.

Speaker 2

Nice.

Speaker

Yeah. So it, it's really, just very friendly. So

Speaker 2

again, for a solo traveler. Celtic Tours can put all of this together for you. If they wanna do the, the, uh, wheel and spoke or hub and spoke.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

They, they can say, well, I wanna go here. And Celtic Tours would take care of that for

Speaker

them. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 2

They would get the train tickets and everything.

Speaker

Yeah. Uh oh.

Speaker 2

Wow. Wow.

Speaker

Absolutely. Now there are, there are a couple of locations. We, we don't do trains. Right. But it's so easy to do. Right. I mean, it's, I mean, you can just go to go to the train and everything's in English, you know, and you just get your own tickets and things like that. There's

Speaker 2

options and I'm sure there's somebody that would. You know, at least point them in the right

direction.

Speaker

Oh, oh yeah.

Speaker 2

So they're not, they're not, even though they're solo, they're not alone. They are with

Speaker

Yep.

Speaker 2

Something that's familiar. Yeah. And

Speaker

they

Speaker 2

can feel at ease.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So Italy is another one of your nice places.

Speaker

Oh, Italy. And then we do, of course, Germany. Mm-hmm. Um, the Christmas markets I mentioned, you know, we're doing, getting ready to drop, our tour for the Christmas market.

Speaker 2

Wow. It's time to go Christmas shopping.

Speaker

It is, it is. And we, do, of course. Austria where it all started in Vienna, but we do Germany and we do Poland as well. I had no idea Poland had Christmas markets.

Speaker 2

I didn't either.

Speaker

Yeah. But they have beautiful Christmas markets in Warsaw and cacao. Mm-hmm. So we do a, whole tour there. So there's just a, so much more to explore that we can do for all of our clients.

Speaker 2

Right. So Celtic tours is not just Celtic

Speaker

No, no. Which

Speaker 2

makes it really, really nice.

Speaker

And that is. Huge, huge misconception because, you know where we started, we now we are Irish, you know? Right. That's where we started. You know, our owners,

Speaker 2

everybody has their roots.

Speaker

Right. Our owners born and bred know mm-hmm. Irish, and, that's where, that's what we love. Right. And that's where our name came from, because that's where he started, you know?

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

53 years ago, that's all he did was Ireland. But again, organically, we've kind of grown so much in 53 years. So now we don't just do Ireland

Speaker 2

so much. And again, you're, you're a small company, so people don't get lost in the shuffle.

Speaker

No.

Speaker 2

Which makes it nice.

Speaker

Yes.

Speaker 2

And you know, one of the things that I like about Celtic Tours is there's somebody answering the phones

Speaker

all the time. Every time you call, you don't get a automated system that says. Press one, press two. You know, you actually get a live person who answers your call during, office hours. And one of the other things when you're traveling, if, if something should happen right? You know, on your tour, maybe, maybe you can't find your transfer or, you know, something along those lines. We have, a phone number that is manned twenty four seven.

Speaker 2

Nice.

Speaker

So it is manned by our management team, so they are able to go ahead and take care of anything immediately for you.

Speaker 2

Mm-hmm.

Speaker

Which is, you know, peace of mind.

Speaker 2

Peace of mind.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I always recommend everybody that travels should get travel insurance.

Speaker

Oh, without a doubt. Without a doubt.

Speaker 2

Without

Speaker

a doubt. Always. Always.

Speaker 2

Because they're, you know, they're spending money, you know? And what if you have the what if question? What if this happens? What if that happens? And you don't wanna lose all that money?

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

So you,

Speaker

well at, like you mm-hmm. I was a travel advisor.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

You know, so, you know, I highly recommend, I don't travel without travel insurance. I actually purchase an annual plan every single year.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

Because I travel so much. Mm-hmm. So I wanna make sure that I'm covered for, for anything. For anything, yeah. For anything. Even when I'm on the road.

Speaker 2

Well, people think that, you know, if you're, if you're insured here in the United States, you'll be covered overseas. And that's not always the case.

Speaker

It is not. It is not, you need to, you need to check your policy and make sure that it is covered. And also check your policy for, the, emergency medical

Speaker 2

right.

Speaker

You know, you wanna make sure that you have enough money to cover you in the event. You have to be airlifted somewhere,

Speaker 2

right?

Speaker

I had, a client who was a diver and they had to be airlifted from a cruise ship to Miami.

Speaker 2

Ouch.

Speaker

Because they got the Benzs and they had to go in

Speaker 2

decompression

Speaker

chamber.

Speaker 2

Oh, decompression chamber.

Speaker

So between their. Insurance and their Dan Insurance, which is their driver's insurance. Right. Almost everything was covered for them, so it's very, very little out of pocket, so,

Speaker 2

right.

Speaker

You just never know. Everybody says, oh, I don't need it. I'm going, or, oh, you know? Right. But who's to say, what's gonna happen when you're on that vacation?

Speaker 2

Yep.

Speaker

You just don't know.

Speaker 2

I had a friend that went overseas and I forget where they were, but he was walking down the staircase in the hotel. The lights went out, he lost his footing and went tumbling down and he dislocated his arm somehow.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I says, but did you just wanna see the inside of the hospitals over there?

Speaker

Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

Speaker 2

Yeah. So it's good to have, it's always good to have.

Speaker

Absolutely.

Speaker 2

Yeah. Now tell me something else that Celtic Tours can do for the solo traveler.

Speaker

Well, I mean, we have all kinds of different hidden gems all over the place. And again, as I kind of mentioned previously, you have, if you're on your own and you wanna. We can help you find those hidden gems, those places maybe that aren't so touristy, places that, you know, in the kind of the local areas, other places to explore. So it, it just really depends on, the travel or the. Selves.

Speaker 2

So if the traveler decides to call their travel agent or call direct to Celtic Tours, they can say, well, these are the places that I wanna see and how I wanna go. Mm-hmm. And something can be put together for them.

Speaker

Yes. Yes.

Speaker 2

That makes it nice.

Speaker

Absolutely. Yeah. And we can work with your budget. Now you have to be realistic. You know, you can't call us and say, I have$1,500 and I wanna stay 10 nights. Right. And that includes my air.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

You gotta be a little realistic.

Speaker 2

Right.

Speaker

But we can work within your budget. So let's say for example, you want to. Stay for seven nights, you know? And your budget is, is so much. Um, well, well let's go ahead and just, you know, we'll make sure that you get a cab. Yeah. You can pick up a cab right there in Dublin and it takes you Right. You know, from the airport to your hotel, and then we'll do the hop on, hop off for you. Mm-hmm. You know, so we'll schedule all of that. We'll go ahead and get you into the Jamison factory or into the Guinness, you know, storehouse, uh, factory so

Speaker 2

they can make a true bucket list.

Speaker

Yeah. Just,

Speaker 2

you know, for themselves.

Speaker

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Which makes it.

Speaker

For sure.

Speaker 2

And again, security is top of mind with Celtic tours, which is nice. Everything is vetted.

Speaker

Yes. Mm-hmm. And we always, always tell you, of course, you've gotta be aware of your surroundings. Absolutely. Especially as a solo traveler. Make sure that you're aware of your surroundings. Again, as I mentioned, I, I do travel a lot by myself and I always make sure that, you know, you gotta be careful, you know, with pickpockets you gotta be, you know, especially in Italy, Italy's really bad about that. So you, you just gotta be aware. Right. And, and that. Hmm. That's where I think either, when you're speaking with somebody with Celtic chores mm-hmm. Or you're speaking with your travel advisor, make sure you ask those questions when you're going overseas because you wanna make sure, again, to be, uh, be familiar with your surroundings as you actually are traveling as well. So especially as a solo traveler.

Speaker 2

So before we end today, what would you, what would your biggest. Tip of the day, be for a solo traveler.

Speaker

Oh my goodness. Um, don't be afraid.

Speaker 2

I like that. Don't be afraid. Get out there,

Speaker

get out there. Don't be afraid. You know, make sure that you, you use somebody, you talk to somebody who knows what they're doing, and that makes you feel comfortable and makes you feel safe.

Speaker 2

Thank you, Diana, for joining me today. And again, this is z Michelson and like I always say. If you like this podcast, share it with your friends and feel free to subscribe. Have a great day.
