[00:00] Judy:
Hello, this is Judy Copenbarger, best selling author, international speaker, money whisperer, financial guru, and creator of Money Truth and Life. Welcome to the Money Truth and Life Podcast.
Today we are talking about the end of summer financial check in. Have you done yours? This is your opportunity to reset, refocus, and recharge.
[01:30] Judy:
You should be doing a financial check in a few times a year. For most people, four times is too often and two is not enough. Three times a year is perfect — every four months. January when you are getting your taxes together, May before the summer begins, and right now, as school starts back.
[03:15] Judy:
This is also the time to look at your numbers for the first eight or nine months of the year. Prepare for year end by checking contributions to your IRAs or 401Ks, and look for tax saving opportunities. There is still time to make smart adjustments.
[04:45] Judy:
Review your business records, meeting minutes, and expenses. Organize what you have and plan for what still needs to be done. This is a great time to get ahead of year end deadlines and start the next quarter stronger.
[06:00] Judy:
A lot of people finish summer with regret. They say, “I had great financial habits, then I blew them over June, July, and August.” Why? Because routines fall apart during summer. Without structure, it is easy to overspend on food, entertainment, and convenience.
[08:00] Judy:
If your routine changes, create a plan for your non routine. Even when things are less structured, planning helps prevent financial drift.
[09:20] Judy:
When you do your check in, keep it simple. Make a short list of three things that did not go as planned. Maybe an unexpected credit card charge, a missed opportunity, or an expense that caught you off guard. Write down what you can do better next time.
[10:45] Judy:
Be honest with the numbers. Look at your real spending, not estimates. Check your credit cards and bank charges. See what you truly spent on Amazon, groceries, and subscriptions. It is easy for small purchases to slip through unnoticed.
[12:10] Judy:
Use the needs, wants, and wishes rule. Ask yourself whether your recent purchases were needs, wants, or just wishes. Staying aware will help you manage your spending plan.
[13:45] Judy:
And check those subscriptions. Streaming services, apps, or software you no longer use can quietly drain your account. Cancel what you do not need. Even small amounts add up quickly over a year.
[15:00] Judy:
If you overspent this summer, tighten your belt for a short while. Plan simple meals at home and look for creative entertainment options that do not cost much. It will help you recover and prepare for the holiday season ahead.
[16:40] Judy:
And do not forget your mindset. That is the foundation of financial success. If you believe you can improve, you can. If you believe you cannot, you are right too. Forgive yourself for past mistakes and move forward with determination.
[18:00] Judy:
Focus on the one percent rule. Do one small thing better today. Just one percent improvement each day adds up to hundreds of positive changes over a year.
[19:15] Judy:
Finally, remember that the key to a successful financial check in is consistency. Reset your spending plan, review your habits, and prepare now for the rest of the year.
