Hello, this is Judy Copenbarger, bestselling author, international speaker, money whisperer, financial expert, and creator of Money, Truth, and Life. Welcome to the Money, Truth, and Life podcast.
It is almost Christmas. Thanksgiving is coming up next week, and the holidays are right around the corner. And believe it or not, it is already Black Friday season.
So let’s talk about how to beat the Black Friday trap and spend smart, not emotional.
Black Friday has not even arrived yet, but the marketing has already started. That urgency is intentional. Marketers want you to believe the deal is only today, only now, and if you wait, you will miss out.
This time of year, emotional spending peaks. The holidays bring pressure to gift well, celebrate well, and create special moments. Add urgency to that, and spending can quickly get out of control.
Most overspending comes from one of two emotions. Fear or greed. Fear of missing out, or the belief that if you do not buy it now, it will be gone forever. That fear often shows up as FOMO.
We have seen this every year. It might be the hottest toy, the newest gadget, the latest phone, or a big screen television. Limited supply is often more marketing than reality, but it works.
So check yourself. Ask why you are buying something. Is it the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason?
When people regret spending, it is usually because they reacted emotionally instead of acting intentionally. The regret shows up later, often in January, when the credit card bill arrives.
To break that cycle, something needs to change. You need to do something more, better, or different.
One common mistake during Black Friday is confusing leverage with debt. Leverage means using a credit card for rewards or points when you already have the cash to pay it off. Debt is using the credit card because the money is not there.
That distinction matters.
One powerful strategy is waiting twenty four hours. Write down what you want or put it in your cart, but do not buy it immediately. Imagine how you will feel six months or a year from now. Will you be glad you bought it, or will you regret it?
That pause often creates clarity.
Another strategy is communication. Talk through purchases with the people who help you make financial decisions. Spouses, partners, or even a financial advisor. Especially when the item is expensive.
It also helps to set spending boundaries in advance. Write down what you want to spend at the low end, the high end, and the point where you know you have crossed the line. That structure protects you.
Retailers are experts at this game. Items marked down from inflated prices, end caps that require buying in bulk, and deals that push you to buy more than you need. Awareness is your first defense.
You are the target. That does not make retailers bad. It just means you need a plan.
Impulsive spending today can affect your long-term financial peace. Overspending leads to credit card balances, interest payments, and less money available for your future goals.
If this is already a tight year for you, it is not too late. You can still set boundaries, be creative, and give meaningfully without overspending.
Thoughtful gifts matter more than expensive ones. Creativity creates memories. A handwritten note, a scavenger hunt, or a thoughtful list of reasons you appreciate someone can be more meaningful than anything store-bought.
You can also start planning now for next year. Setting aside a small amount each month builds freedom. Opening an account or envelope with money already saved feels empowering.
Planning removes guilt, shame, and conflict, especially when more than one person is involved in spending decisions.
As Black Friday approaches, stay aware. Ads will be everywhere. Phones, computers, stores, and signs. Stick to your plan and execute it.
