Hello, this is Judy Copenbarger, bestselling author, international speaker, money whisperer, financial expert, and creator of Money, Truth, and Life. Welcome to the Money, Truth, and Life podcast.
Today we are talking about holiday financial triggers. Have you ever noticed how many emotions come up during the holidays? There is a lot going on this time of year, and it can be challenging to stay calm and spend with clarity.
I have so many great memories of Christmas growing up. Family gatherings, traditions, the tree, the food, all of it. But I also want to acknowledge that this season is not easy for everyone. Some people have experienced loss, disappointment, or difficult memories around the holidays. It is important to be mindful of that.
Even for those who love this season, emotional triggers show up. There is pressure to bring the right gift, wear the right outfit, decorate the right way, or keep up with others. Comparison sneaks in easily.
There are also food and drink triggers, social expectations, and constant opportunities to spend money. You cannot walk into a grocery store without seeing holiday displays at the end of every aisle. It is easy to grab something extra and toss it into the cart without thinking.
One of the best ways to manage these triggers is to go in with a plan. Know what you intend to buy and why. When you unload your groceries or packages, ask yourself if you bought what you planned or if emotion took over.
The holidays create many opportunities to overspend. Gift exchanges, parties, school events, work gatherings, travel, hosting, and entertaining all add up quickly. There is often pressure to do more and give more than usual.
At our house, we have learned that we cannot do everything. We have to choose which events to attend, which gatherings to host, and where to invest our time and energy. That can be emotional, but it also protects our peace.
Comparison plays a big role in holiday stress. This can show up in gift giving, especially with extended family or group exchanges. The desire to fit in or impress others can drive spending decisions that do not align with your values or budget.
I encourage you to focus on connection rather than comparison. Gift giving started as a meaningful tradition, not a competition. One thoughtful gift can be just as meaningful as many expensive ones.
Overspending often leads to guilt and regret, especially when credit card bills arrive in January. Without a plan, it is easy to fall into the same cycle year after year.
Simple strategies can help. Make a list. Set a spending range. Decide in advance what you are willing to spend. Shop with intention. Pause before purchasing.
Creativity can replace excess spending. The experience of giving can matter more than the price tag. Traditions, games, handwritten notes, or shared activities often create stronger memories than expensive gifts.
At our house, we have traditions that focus on fun and connection rather than cost. These moments bring laughter and togetherness without breaking the budget.
Everyone is creative in their own way. Creativity does not have to look a certain way. It might show up as thoughtful planning, meaningful gestures, or finding new ways to connect.
The goal is not to eliminate joy or generosity. The goal is to stay calm, spend with clarity, and protect your financial wellbeing.
