#9: How to Say YES!
Sep 10, 2018
How do you maintain control over your most precious resource?
After spending years somewhat aimlessly and unintentionally committing to this obligation or that, I finally decided enough was enough. Struggling with saying no to people out of fear of disappointing, I ultimately flipped things around. Rather than struggling with saying no, we should actually struggle with saying yes! Besides, we only have so many minutes granted to us, we shouldn’t be so frivolous and hasty with any of them.
Enjoy this episode where I highlight the 9 questions I ask myself when considering whether to accept or respectfully decline various demands on my time.
The 9 questions fit nicely, and evenly, into 3 different categories:
How does it FEEL?
1. Do I want to do it?
How does it FIT?
2. What is the feeling state I could expect from this?
3. Will I have foreseeably have the opportunity again? Do I need to do it, or is there an alternative?
4. What is the realistic time commitment?
How does it FURTHER?
5. Is there a clear end?
6. What will I remove or replace?
7. What transferrable skills will I acquire?
8. What perspective will I gain and will I be stretched or challenged?
9. Will it build my network?
Let these questions be a tool to help guide you on the journey. There is arguably nothing more important than how you spend your time – don’t let others decide this for you. Don’t be ruled by a lack of security or clarity of your purpose in this life and on this earth. Don’t ignore the value of each moment, each hour you’ve been given. You’ve got one life: you don’t know when it’ll end but you can give it a boost right now by being more intentional over how you spend your time. The days are long, but the years are short. Spend wisely.
