S2 E12: Soul of the Rings

Teloopa discovers magic to be accessible to her while she is close to the rings Mijar used when he drained her. The only power she has leads to dragon attacks and random kidnappings.

He’s definitely heading for the Castle Ruins.

YEMILINA

Why?

NAZZY

Teloopa mentioned that he wanted to rebuild the castle. He made a speech about it at his Reclassifying Ceremony.

SOUND: Compliance spells fading in

YEMILINA

So he’s enslaved more than minstrels. He must have builders with him, too.

NAZZY

We’d better just get close enough to figure out how strong he is now. Watch him a while, before we make any moves.

WENOBURT

Don’t step there! Stop.

SOUND: Footsteps stop

NAZZY

What’s wrong?

SOUND: Crawling bugs fading in

WENOBURT

These beetles are trying really hard to push some horrible rings out of their tunnels. The rings are getting too hot. They have to get rid of them quickly.

SOUND: Feet shuffling

SOUND: Rings shifting in dirt

SOUND: Glowing ambiance

NAZZY

Ooo, glowing rings. Are they magical?

WENOBURT

The bugs don’t like them. Must be bad magic.

YEMILINA

I don’t like that glow either. It’s sort of pulsing, as if…do you think…could these rings be in sync with Mijar’s evil laugh? They’re pulsing all together, like they’re connected to the same thing. Listen! Watch!

MIJAR

(distant evil laugh)

NAZZY

I don’t think the rings are responding to his laugh, but he could be laughing about them. Maybe they’re a lure for a trap.

YEMILINA

Let’s walk around them.

SOUND: Pegasus wings fading in

SOUND: Overlapping footsteps

NAZZY, YEMILINA and WENOBURT

Teloopa!

TELOOPA

Really? So shocking to see me arrive by Pegasus? You didn’t bat an eye when I could teleport. You have to rub it in, huh? Goggle at me coming the slow way.

YEMILINA

I’m not goggling because of the Pegasus. It’s that book you’ve got. It looks thick and complicated. When I was at your house, I saw so much dust on those kinds of books, I assumed you never read them.

TELOOPA

(sigh)

I know. I’ve always had too much talent to study magic…but this is an extreme situation.

SOUND: Dismounting from Pegasus

SOUND: Glowing ambiance

TELOOPA

It’s here.

SOUND: Footsteps on dirt

TELOOPA

I don’t believe it! It’s really here!

NAZZY

What’s here?

TELOOPA

My power. Magic doesn’t drain into nothing – it changes. That’s how we get toxic waste like the Box of Doom had. Mijar had to drain my power into something else. This is where he drained me. Beforehand, he seeded the ground with tiny objects in case he got the chance to drain me.

NAZZY

Objects…these rings?

TELOOPA

Yes. My power was drained into these rings. If I get close enough—

WENOBURT

You shouldn’t! The bugs say they’re hot.

TELOOPA

Of course my power burns bugs. I hate bugs. But hey, at least they dug the rings up for me. I think all that dirt was blocking the signal.

NAZZY

Can I see your book?

TELOOPA

Sure.

SOUND: Book thumps into hand

SOUND: Book opens

SOUND: Footsteps

SOUND: Clinking rings

TELOOPA

Nice and cool…still glowing bright. Trouble is I need a powerful spell to transfer the magic back into my body.

YEMILINA

Couldn’t you just wear the rings?

TELOOPA

They’re vessels locking my magic up, not staffs for channeling it. 

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

TELOOPA

Luckily, there is one connection effect: they can sense my presence. So I’m thinking there’s a chance they decide to give me my power back on their own.

WENOBURT

But rings can’t think.

SOUND: Page turning

NAZZY

And you missed a page.

TELOOPA

I did not.

SOUND: Staffs crashing to the ground

TELOOPA

Why are there a bunch of staffs here? These aren’t mine.

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

NAZZY

You did miss something. There are two pages stuck together.

SOUND: Staffs crashing to the ground

WENOBURT

Why are there more staffs?

YEMILINA

They seemed to whip over here in a summoning wind. Do you suppose Mijar—?

TELOOPA

Is that piece of dragon dung around here?

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

TELOOPA

Oh, yeah, I see him now.

SOUND: Dung plop

NAZZY, YEMILINA and WENOBURT

(disgusted noise)

YEMILINA

Why is he summoning dragon dung? If he knows we’re here, it’s a terribly childish weapon.

NAZZY

It wasn’t him. The stuck page says: ‘Once exposed, the power-storing objects will respond to sound from the power’s original vessel. When said vessel is in close proximity, applicable words spoken will be perceived as summoning commands. This effect will intensify over time, eventually causing the power-storing objects to cave in on themselves – leaving behind a toxic magic waste that can no longer be transferred into a living being.’ So you have to be careful what you say near those rings, okay, Teloopa? Teloopa?

WENOBURT

She’s not listening. She’s watching Mijar.

TELOOPA

Why wouldn’t he use childish weapons? He’s a big baby! Even Enelcia is more mature.

NAZZY

Don’t say people’s names! You’ll summon—

SOUND: Objects falling on the ground

WENOBURT

Whoa, that’s a lot of stuff! There’s pillows, sticks, pool noodles, skipping ropes…what the heck?

NAZZY

Childish weapons…

SOUND: Body impact on ground

NAZZY

Big baby…

YEMILINA

A giant! Oh, you poor thing. You’re the youngest giant I’ve ever seen. Come have a cuddle.

NAZZY

(shriek)

ENELCIA

(grunt)

NAZZY

Enelcia.

SOUND: Feet shuffling

ENELCIA

You’re magically yanking me to your interventions now? This ‘help’ is getting downright aggressive.

SOUND: Frog croak

YEMILINA

This is not an intervention!

ENELCIA

Yeah, right! There’s more than one of you and you’re looking at me. And there’s a baby. You brought a big baby to judge me? How rude!

YEMILINA

We were giving you space. It was an accident. Teloopa?

WENOBURT

Stop watching Mijar! Listen to us! Please!

TELOOPA

(growling)

I’m coming for you, you rotten—

YEMILINA

(screaming)

Teloopa, stop! Stop!

TELOOPA

Ow, why so shrill? It’s not like a swarm of dragons is—

YEMILINA

TELOOPA

Nazzy, go get me another wolf-banishing drum! Please hurry!

(frightened noise)

WENOBURT

Back, dragon!

SOUND: Sword unsheathed

WENOBURT

SOUND: Shuffling feet

WENOBURT

Watch out, Nazzy!

SOUND: Claws slash

NAZZY

(scream of pain)

YEMILINA

Nazzy! No!

NAZZY

(groaning)

TELOOPA

Uh…Nazzy’s dragon-proof house!

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

WENOBURT

Yah! Take this and yah – huh-hah!

Inside! Hurry!

SOUND: Footsteps on dirt

YEMILINA

I’ve got Nazzy.

SOUND: Hands scooping rings

I’ve got my rings.

YEMILINA

Someone get that baby!

TELOOPA

(straining)

Oh, yeah. Okay. Got him…nope. 

SOUND: Body thump

TELOOPA

Never mind. He’s heavy.

ENELCIA

(straining) 

I’ve got the head. Keep the feet. Let’s go!

WENOBURT

(panting)

SOUND: Feet shuffling

Fighting dragons is a lot more tiring than I remember it being.

SOUND: Dragon breathing fire

ENELCIA

Wenoburt, stop fighting! Run for the house!

WENOBURT

Not until there’s another dragon slayer that will take care of this!

SOUND: Dragon wings

SOUND: Fierce dragon roar

WENOBURT

Sir JP!

SOUND: Dragon belch

ENELCIA

Now! Run!

SOUND: Running footsteps on dirt

Oh, he’s masterful at getting their necks with his big teeth! I suppose real dragons can’t think as fast as him.

He’s got them all down now. Well done, My Love!

SOUND: Soft dragon roar

MIJAR

That’s quite enough slaying, Sir Show Off!

MIJAR

Hmm, yes, that wind tunnel ought to hold you a while. I don’t like where your princess is, though. The wolves will have a terrible time getting at her throat through those walls.

YEMILINA

(struggling / screaming)

SOUND: Feet kicking dirt

You’re confused! You only wanted your wolves to attack me so the Queen could watch. She’s not even here!

MIJAR

Must you rush me? I’ve just been refreshing my minstrels’ compliance spells. I need time to breathe between magical miracles.

YEMILINA

Take all the time you need. Why not drop this spell holding me? Let me run a pathetically short distance away? There’s no need for you to juggle my restraint with everything else – encumbered as I am in this heavy gown, wearing shoes this nice.

SOUND: Music fading out completely

MIJAR

Your concern is touching, princess. As my compliance spells slip and the minstrels’ fingers slip on their lutes, I do feel the weight of too many spells at once. The ache in my head, it…(groan)…I said more music! Play continuously!

Now, I shall bring the maze. Her Royal Smugness will have the best possible view of your demise.

As a bonus, my goody-goody knight in the dragon’s clothing also has a spectacular view. It’s all you deserve for being the most disappointing creature I have ever made.

Teloopa, you have to do something!

TELOOPA

Uh…wolf muzzles!

TELOOPA

I mean I can’t make them go on the wolves. I can only summon them. Out of ideas.

ENELCIA

Then I’m going to do something!

TELOOPA

(dismissive)

SOUND: Footsteps on creaky floor

ENELCIA

Hey!

SOUND: Footsteps on dirt

ENELCIA

Mijar! You’re really going for the lesser punishment, here, aren’t you? I guess you sort of liked working for the Queen? Just a little bit, huh?

MIJAR

How dare you! I have sacrificed every scrap of my morality to deliver the harshest vengeful blow possible.

ENELCIA

Sure, she’ll grieve and cherish her daughter’s memory. She’ll heal. How about some festering wounds that never will? When someone you love hates your guts, there’s no escape from pain. There’s literally no escape if you stick Yemilina in that maze with her!

YEMILINA

Nooooooo!

SOUND: Wolves snarling

MIJAR

Hold that thought, my beasties.

SOUND: Magic staff

SOUND: Muted wolves snarling

MIJAR

Hmmm…I’m thinking of giving you choices, princess.

SOUND: Enchanted Maze opens

MIJAR

The entrance to the maze is wide open for you. The exit sealed tight for the Queen.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Come here, Yemilina! You can come in!

MIJAR

I’ll hold your killers in check just one minute while you decide: eternity with your mother or quick and blissful oblivion.

YEMILINA

(tortured noise)

MIJAR

(evil laugh)

Observe, my minstrels! Bards, immortalize this with new songs. The Queen’s own daughter would rather die than spend time with her!

(evil laugh)

SOUND: Muted wolves snarling

SOUND: Dragon roar

YEMILINA

It’s no use roaring at the wolves, My Love.

SOUND: Dragon roar

YEMIILINA

Oh. You’re roaring at me.

I hope that giant baby doesn’t have an evil twin like our other giant friend. Remember that Enchanted Mirror Place? Nazzy told us about it.

TELOOPA

WENOBURT

ENELCIA

So these rings turn speech into summoning spells? For objects, people and places? Get away from them!

Someone whose name I won’t mention reads too much future Cave People fiction. Souls in objects don’t make you evil. Not in the real world.

NAZZY

(groaning in pain)

ENELCIA

Oh, you look awful. Come on, back on the bed. I’ll help you.

SOUND: Shifting bodies

SOUND: Body thump on bed

SOUND: Shifting blankets

ENELCIA

Oh, Nazzy! Since you may be dying, I’d like to give you a gift. The gift of being right. I’ll change my frog baby back into an elf. Only for you.

SOUND: Frog croak

ENELCIA

I can do it. I can. Teloopa…change her back.

TELOOPA

I can’t, dumbass. I’m out of—

ENELCIA

You’re doing magic stuff now. Find a way to re-elf my baby before Nazzy dies of disappointment.

NAZZY

(weakly)

I think I’ll be okay.

ENELCIA
(gasp)

You’ve met your future self somewhere, so you know you live?

NAZZY

No…just…seem to have all my vital organs.

ENELCIA

What about the bleeding?

NAZZY

Someone should probably do something about that.

TELOOPA

Healing potion.

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

NAZZY

Is it yours?

TELOOPA

What if it is? What’s that question for?

NAZZY

I don’t trust yours.

TELOOPA

I could just let you bleed to death.

WENOBURT

The rings are evil! I will slice them up! Hi-ya!

TELOOPA

Whoa, whoa, I’ve always been mean. Leave them alone!

Shields.

SOUND: Shields falling

(frustration improv fading out)

ENELCIA

Drink this, Nazzy!

ENELCIA

You shouldn’t care if it gives you frog legs. Life over limb.

NAZZY

(weakly)

Fine.

SOUND: Sipping and swallowing

NAZZY

(stronger voice)

Much better.

ENELCIA

Now that you’ve got more time to lecture me, I’m gonna do some more thinking about the whole frog baby thing. I’m just not ready to make that choice.

TELOOPA

Arrrh, this is so stupid. Goblin nanny!

SOUND: Muted summoning spell

SOUND: Body thud

SOUND: Goblin complaining

ENELCIA

(Gasp)

That’s kidnapping! Again!

(distant shouting and panting)

TELOOPA

Goblins are great with kids. This one can help you with all the gross stuff, so you can stomach raising an elf baby.

SOUND: Goblin complaining

ENELCIA

Sorry, Sir. I don’t know where you got yanked from. Can we help you get home?

SOUND: Goblin muttering

ENELCIA

I don’t speak goblin. Does he need help?

TELOOPA

How should I know?

ENELCIA

What? Why would you summon a goblin nanny if you can’t even give him instructions?

TELOOPA

Nannies speak Baby. Your kid can tell him what to do.

SOUND: Frog croak

SOUND: Goblin complaining

SOUND: Retreating footsteps

NAZZY

And he’s leaving.

TELOOPA

Well, I guess he doesn’t speak Frog Baby. You blew your chance.

ENELCIA

You are the one with problems. Work on you!

TELOOPA

Wait…I said all kinds of words after ‘goblin nanny’ – where are my speak-and-they-come things? Cauldron. Newt eyeballs.

SOUND: Distant running footsteps

WENOBURT

(panting)

NAZZY

Wenoburt got your rings out from under those shields.

TELOOPA

Curse him! There he is! 

WENOBURT

(panting)

TELOOPA

He’s after my Pegasus!

SOUND: Running footsteps fading out

NAZZY

Mind if we say goodbye to the cave people?

ENELCIA

No time for that. We’ve got to get Yemilina out of that maze.

SOUND: Vivicord walking

SOUND: Enchanted maze ambiance

NAZZY

The vivicord is going right for it. If it can get through even with the entrance sealed…

ENELCIA

Hmm, probably something only a vivicord can do. Different biology.

SOUND: Vivicord passing through maze barrier

NAZZY

(fading out)
