Trapped with her disowned mother, Yemilina is magically compelled to resolve one issue between them. Meanwhile, Nazzy prepares an ambush for Mijar.

YEMILINA

If I can get Yemilina to say aloud ‘mother,’ ‘mommy,’ ‘mom’ or ‘mama,’ she has to talk to me about one of our issues. She has to talk to me until we have resolved it.

What was that?

QUEEN AUGUSTA

A spell. In case you didn’t notice, we’re standing on a golden hexagon made from melted genie lamps. It grants conditional wishes. Yesterday, while I stood upon it, I muttered ‘if I finish one more lap around this maze, I have to get a decent meal’ and a royal picnic appeared at the end of my lap.

YEMILINA

You should have picked a condition that would actually happen. If you can get me to breathe, for instance.

(dramatic inhale)

Oops, missed opportunity. That could have been our talk.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

YEMILINA

Did I ever fail to get you the best of everything? I seem to recall giving you a diamond for your fifth birthday and once I found out it wasn’t the largest diamond in Wilzerlott, I had it removed immediately. You only cried for a few minutes, waiting for the replacement. Was that traumatic for you?

YEMILINA

Sitting with your face averted won’t keep me quiet either.

YEMILINA

Maybe you could keep you quiet, hmm? Do you possess that kind of self-control?

QUEEN AUGUSTA

I am blessed with very little of that. I think you know the feeling.

YEMILINA

I’m controlling myself right now! That’s why my nails aren’t bouncing off your rubbery eyeballs, trying desperately to give you an instance of pain.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

My emotional capacity for pain is so great, it cannot begin to compare with the bodily suffering of others.

YEMILINA

Arrgh! If that were true, I’d feel so much better. I hate you! I hate you! Feel that? I don’t. I should feel your pain satisfying me right here.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

(gasp)

YEMILINA

No, in my gut! That’s my gut. I still have guts even though I’m pregnant!

QUEEN AUGUSTA

What will you tell my grandchild about me? Must they hate me, too?

YEMILINA

That’s really up to you.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

YEMILINA

YEMILINA

He’s not going to last. You’re like a mountain in my shoe and I won’t live to see you crumble.

YEMILINA

What’s that up there?

SOUND: Dress movement

QUEEN AUGUSTA

A card you made for me many years ago. Someone hung it there on the outside of the maze, right in that transparent section, so I could see it. One of my loyal subjects must have salvaged it from the castle ruins.

YEMILINA

No, it was Nazzy.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

What?

YEMILINA

I remember drawing that big heart. I painted it with every colour I had, because Nazzy said there was no rush. She could take the card for me whenever I was finished. I wrote those words myself, but she helped me spell them: ‘Happy birthday. I love you, Mommy.’

SOUND: Genie spell

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Ah-hah! You said it!

YEMILINA

That didn’t count! I was reading!

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Choose one point of contention – an important one.

YEMILINA

You tried to kill Nazzy.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

One rash moment—

YEMILINA

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Surely my lack of success matters? Can one truly hate a hand for swatting ineffectively at a zipping fly? It’s funny, really.

YEMILINA

If you must know, I’ve hated the way you treat Nazzy, even long before you got homicidal. Even before you knew she was a time traveller.

What does a broken petal mean? It broke, look! I didn’t quite have it plucked off yet, so it doesn’t mean anything, right? I can’t decide with a broken petal. That’s a broken choice. Does that make the other choice automatically right? No. Can’t be. Arrgh, I’ve lost my rhythm, I almost had it!

Teloopa, where are the rest of the flowers? I need more.

TELOOPA

My yard is not a flower garden. It’s incredible you found a handful of blossoms to destroy. I usually have them mulched up for potions.

ROSE

Why are you going through all your stuff? Your potions aren’t part of the plan.

The Enchanted Mirror Place is just as malleable as we hoped. We’ve prepped it for an attack.

ROSE

NAZZY

Just time-consuming.

TELOOPA

I want my rings back, Nazzy.

NAZZY

Wenoburt will keep them safe.

TELOOPA

He shouldn’t have them! They hold my power. The power that should be in my body, and if it can’t be, at least it should be attached to me.

NAZZY

You were playing with it. That’s dangerous.

TELOOPA

You’re not my mother! You can’t tell me to be responsible.

NAZZY

I’ll stop telling you things, if you like, but you still can’t have them back. Not until they’re needed.

TELOOPA

Where are you hiding Wenoburt?

NAZZY

He’ll join us when—

TELOOPA

Bring him here right now with my rings!

NAZZY

I can’t do that.

TELOOPA

I’m not afraid of you.

NAZZY

I’m not afraid of you either. How about we wait this out calmly?

TELOOPA

You should be afraid of me! When I get my powers back, I could make you worse than a frog. I excel at a wide range of slimy critters.

NAZZY

Well, if we’re going to go there…your parents met in the year 817 AD on the first day of the Flood Festival, in the line up for the lunch buffet, exactly two minutes and nine seconds after the lunch gong sounded.

TELOOPA

(big gasp)

TODDLER GIANT

Do my evil twins really have enough boogers to stop the bad man?

NAZZY

I think you made more than enough. You should be very proud, Little Giant.

TELOOPA

Wait, wait, she threatened my entire existence! Didn’t anyone hear that?

ENELCIA

Pipe down, Teloopa.

SOUND: Fairy wings

ROSE

Deep breaths. Just be nice.

SOUND: Scuffing in grass

TELOOPA

(frustrated noise)

ENELCIA

Should we attack Mijar now? Teloopa might burst a blood vessel if we keep her waiting much longer.

ROSE

Or she might break all her stuff.

TELOOPA

NAZZY

I’m calm!

NAZZY

When I think you’re calm…you can do a test run on summoning the Mirror Place.

TELOOPA

(stormy breaths)

NAZZY

But first I’m going to rescue Yemilina.

I guess I’ve haven’t taken you this far back before, have I, vivicord? You’re okay. I’m far more likely to be eaten by a dinosaur than you are. After all, even dragons don’t like vivicord meat.

We’re only staying a minute. I just need a long timeline to spring forward with. From here to Yemilina in my time is like a long slingshot pulled taut and released. My ancestor assures me this much momentum will break through any magical barrier. It’s so helpful to ask anyone who’s ever existed for advice.

NAZZY

I know I didn’t record my conversation with my ancestor. It was research. I thought it would be boring.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

That is a point of contention for another day, don’t you think? Your father should be present to tell his side.

YEMILINA

Nazzy! What excellent timing. The Queen has just promised to treat you like family, and not the kind that gets turned into ghosts, isn’t that right…M—mmm…(sigh)…mother?

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Oh, my sweet girl!

YEMILINA

Don’t expect me to say it again.

NAZZY

That is good timing, because I have a controversial rescue plan.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Did you just break that barrier? Am I free?

NAZZY

It sealed again. It was just a quick punch to get me in. I had to visit dinosaurs to do it. Now I need another long timeline slingshot to get Yemilina out.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

Dinosaurs, really? That’s a bit, uh…it’s rather…well, I’m sure she’ll be safe with you.

NAZZY

I was thinking more like a long trip in the opposite direction.

YEMILINA

Ooo, you’re taking me to see the cave people of 2024, aren’t you?

NAZZY

Now seems right.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

(gasp)

But that’s the trip you made when you dropped her!

YEMILINA

Ugh, relax. That was a trip to 2022 and Nazzy was over three decades younger. She has since gained the wisdom to master this feat.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

If you drop her again, Time Med—

YEMILINA

Nazzy!

QUEEN AUGUSTA

—Nazzy, if you drop her again, I shall have to disown you!

NAZZY

That’s fair, Your Majesty. Ready?

YEMILINA

Yes.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

I’m not ready.

YEMILINA

She was asking me.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

But I might never see you again. How about a hug?

YEMILINA

Too soon. But I have decided to forgive my child self for her blind love. Nazzy, will you bring her here someday if her mother is trapped forever in this maze? You did it when my father was lonely, didn’t you?

NAZZY

Yes, I can do that.

QUEEN AUGUSTA

You could also free me, couldn’t you? Am I to be tortured for my failed attempts to murder you? May I not be pitied for the distance it put between me and my only child?

NAZZY

I’m not actually punishing you. According to my ancestor, invincible bodies are impossible to carry through time. We could still try it, I suppose, but I trust it would go very badly.

YEMILINA

You could be smooshed into the maze barrier – stuck inside the wall itself while Nazzy sails away without you in tow. Best make your peace in this spacious prison.

Why did you bring another vivicord? There’s already one in here.

NAZZY

I couldn’t just leave mine with the dinosaurs. This way, you can keep one to record what you’re doing.

YEMILINA
