Michelle Ward & Shawn Cahill

Welcome to the first episode of Profit Points, where we, Michelle Ward and Shawn Cahill from Modern CPA, aim to provide valuable information to small business owners. In this podcast, you can expect to find business how-to’s, tax tips and tricks, and other great advice from a variety of professionals knowledgeable about small business.

In this interview with Craig Fleischmann of The Fleischmann Law Firm, we talk about all things business structure. Most people start a business without working with an attorney first when in reality they definitely should. So you’ve decided to start a new business, now what?

Many people ready to start a business are already familiar with the industry they are entering, whether they already are working in the industry, are purchasing a business they worked for, or are turning a hobby into a business. Craig expects that the people he meets will have already met with an accountant to determine projections and to come to him with their concept clear. What can a lawyer help you with once you’ve done these things?

Craig works with his clients to determine the best structure for their business. This means choosing if you want to operate as a sole proprietor, general partner, an LLC, a corporation, etc. In reality, this is for tax and liability purposes so you’re going to want to choose the structure with the least amount of risk and the most amount of benefits that are suitable for your new business.

In this episode, Craig shares all the ins and outs of choosing the right structure and why. The differences of the structures. Why an attorney can help you from making simple mistakes and other important legal checklists for your small business. There is so much useful information for your startup and I hope this gets you off to a great start!
