Cinematic Love: Exploring 90s Rom-Coms with Janeil Hampton
Is love in the air or just a great movie night? Join me and my valentine, Janeil Hampton, as we share our passion for films, especially the romantic comedies that tug at our heartstrings. With Janeil's unique habit of meticulously logging each film on Letterboxd, we embark on a nostalgic journey through the 90s, featuring gems like "The Wedding Singer" and "Only You." Our cinematic ride doesn't just stop at romance; we also explore Janeil's fascination with the horror classic "Nosferatu" and our shared excitement for the upcoming Super Bowl as we cheer for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Do you believe in destiny or does love require a bit of deception? Through laughter and lively debate, we unpack the whimsical plot of "Only You," where mistaken identities lead to an enchanting yet comedic romance between Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. From Ouija boards to quirky encounters in Rome, we dissect the elements of spontaneity versus stability, and the intricate dance of love and deception. Janeil and I reflect on the captivating dynamic between the characters, pondering how these themes play out in real-life relationships.
Our cinematic chat wouldn't be complete without a spotlight on Adam Sandler's "The Wedding Singer." From humorous heartbreak to a heartfelt romance, we explore the film's charm and why it remains a favorite. The comedic chemistry between Sandler and Drew Barrymore, infused with an unforgettable 80s soundtrack, provides the perfect backdrop for this feel-good movie discussion. Whether you're a rom-com devotee or just enjoy reminiscing about iconic 90s films, this episode promises laughter, love, and a sprinkle of nostalgia.
excuse me, is anybody sitting here? Sorry, this is taken sorry all right. So we're here for the valentine's day episode, and what better guest to join me than my valentine this year, mr uh, janiel hampton. Thank you for coming, janiel thank you for having me I know you're a little bit nervous. It's, it's okay. But all we're doing is talking about movies and since I met you, I've wanted you on this podcast because you are a movie head. Like you're pretty active on Letterboxd.
Speaker 3:Mm-hmm, yeah, okay, yeah, I like that.
Speaker 1:Not a lot of people know about Letterboxd. That's probably the biggest flex. I brag about you all the time. But Letterboxd, how often do you log?
Speaker 3:you log it after every single, every single movie I watch, I'm gonna log it on there do you do like playlists, like for your favorites, and stuff like that?
Speaker 1:I I need to start doing that I'm not really that into it. You know, really no I just started using it a couple years ago. I like it because you can track how many movies you've seen. I guess how many movies I've seen last year.
Speaker 3:I'm gonna say 250 254.
Speaker 1:That was really close. That was really close. Yeah, but I go to the movies all the time. We've known each other for like less than a month, but we've gone to the movies like three times already. What has been Last year, let's talk about last year a little bit. What's some of your favorite movies from last year, 2024?
Speaker 3:well, nosferatu for sure, number one, dang it, I'm blanking, I'm sorry it's okay.
Speaker 1:Well, let's talk about what kind of movies you like first of all okay, well, rom-coms that's perfect, because we're talking about rom-coms for our valentine's day episode comedy like mystery.
Speaker 3:Those are really nice so comedy mystery.
Speaker 1:Um, so we're going to be talking about two movies. They're both going to be throwback movies for those listening. Both set in the 90s, happened by accident, but I'm glad I watched them. You picked a movie that I've never seen before and I was pretty excited to talk about because it was a pretty good movie, and I picked my all-time favorite adam sandler movie, the wedding singer. Um, let's talk about your movie, because we'll go into yours in just a second, or mine in just a second, and uh, but we're going to be talking about only you, with robert downey jr and marissa tomei. How did you? I wouldn't do you remember watching this for the first time?
Speaker 3:yeah, um, I had that on hulu so I was scrolling and I saw on hulu, I was like, okay, what's this? And then put it on and that was it.
Speaker 1:I forget all the time that both those actors are 90 stars, you know, because they've been in so much since then. But marissa tomei, she was in, like my cousin vinny, and you know all a bunch of stuff like that she's a great actress she is.
Speaker 3:She's pretty good. Um, I know her from a different world, first season and that's that's where I met marissa tomei, and then I saw her in like everything else I don't think I've noticed her in that. Well, I've seen that actually she was in the very first, very first season, um, and after that she left. She didn't finish it, so probably because she's a movie star now.
Speaker 1:Well, yeah, I guess yeah, I'm actually watching a movie in the background like Crazy, Stupid Love. I forgot she's in that movie too. I like doing that when you notice an actor and you notice them in all of them. We are recording this right before Super Bowl, like really like two hours before Super Bowl starts. We're going to go watch the game just to keep Super Bowl on the topic. But like, who do you root for?
Speaker 3:The Eagles Philadelphia. So just the topic but like who do you wouldn't root for um the eagles philadelphia, so just because.
Speaker 1:Is that why you're in green today?
Speaker 3:yeah, I guess, so I wasn't even thinking about that. But you have to like root for somebody, and, and when I think of philadelphia I think of like elementary.
Speaker 1:So when I think of philadelphia I think of Kevin Hart. That's kind of bad. Not bad, I guess.
Speaker 3:I guess I mean yeah.
Speaker 1:You watch that show frequently I love that show. I haven't caught up recently though. Well, I've seen clips of it on TikTok. It looks hilarious. It is really funny. But the only reason I really want to watch it is because they're doing a crossover episode with Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Speaker 3:Do you watch that show? My mom saw the episode.
Speaker 1:I haven't seen it yet Is it funny, she say it's funny.
Speaker 3:I think, yeah, Nice.
Speaker 1:Nice. I'm excited for that. I love watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now going into Valentine's Day, let's talk about Valentine's Day a little bit. Are you traditional Valentine's Like go to dinner dates and then you know like chill just chill.
Speaker 3:I think I've never had to do anything like that nothing crazy no, just staying home and like eating chocolate and watching tv, that's pretty, sounds pretty.
Speaker 1:Ideal for me. Remember back in the day how simple it was in school when everyone would buy like candy for the whole class and everything yeah, that was pretty cool. And have the party at the end, yeah, yeah, you had to make your own little box for the cards and everything that was pretty cool, um, but valentine's day movies.
Speaker 1:It's a big, not big year. It's just around the time of the year all these rom-coms come out. I just talked about companion, the other last episode. Um, there's been a great couple of movies coming out. Do you remember going to the movies around valentine's?
Speaker 3:day?
Speaker 1:no, not really, to be honest, I mean I remember one year I don't remember the name of it, maybe you know that it's like a. It was a romance movie, but like this guy it was like this guy was a cowboy or something like that. He worked on a farm, it was big. It was probably like 10 years ago now and I remember I was supposed to go see it with someone, but it was sold out. So we ended up going and seeing a Liam Neeson action movie instead.
Speaker 3:I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know what you're talking about.
Speaker 1:I haven't heard no one talk about it since then, so it wasn't that good. You're big into romance movies, though. What are some of your favorite romance?
Speaker 3:movies. Okay, well, Moonstruck.
Speaker 1:Moonstruck is a good one. We Moonstruck is a good one.
Speaker 3:We almost had it on this podcast, but it's already been on this podcast. Then I would say Only you, that one's pretty good Dang. I can't think of anything else right now, romance movies is like.
Speaker 1:There's like well, these are romance comedies. 51st Dates is a good one. Eternal Sunshine with Jim Carrey have you seen that?
Speaker 3:one. I haven't seen any of the ones you're listing so far.
Speaker 1:That one's pretty good. You haven't seen 50 Shades of Grey? No, what, wait, wait, wait. 50 First Dates Okay, no, I haven't seen that one either. But I love romantic comedy movies. I mean, that's so cheesy and, trust me, the movies we're going to be talking about today are super cheesy. But, um, I want to just dive deep into this, going into your movie first. Um, we're gonna be talking about only you. Came out 1994, both of us weren't around yet and, uh, for those you don't know, it came out 1994 as a teen, faith was told that her destiny was a man named Damon Bradley. Years later, she decided to marry someone else. A Damon Bradley calls to wish him well and Faith blows off her wedding to follow Damon to Italy. Starring people like Marissa Tomei, robert Downey Jr, bonnie Hunt, directed by Norman Jewison and written by Diane Drake. First, how many times have you seen this movie?
Speaker 3:Probably about five times now.
Speaker 1:Five times? Yeah, I would see this movie again. Probably not five times worth.
Speaker 3:I mean it's like a comfort movie now at this point.
Speaker 1:It is a comfort movie, I'll give you that. It is very good, but it's cheesy. It's so cheesy. I have hella notes here for this movie. I'll give you that. It is very good, but, um, it's cheesy. It's so cheesy. I have hella notes here for this movie. Let's see, let's go down the list, because we're just going to go down. Like you know, the plot line a little bit. For those of you who don't know, I just gave a very good description of the movie, because there's nothing more complicated than that. A woman this movie opens up 11 year old girl, first of all playing with a ouija board, do you do?
Speaker 3:that stuff, no, never, no, never do that you do you touch a ouija board, you lose my number.
Speaker 1:No, she's playing ouija board with her little brother and, of course, you're talking to the spirits. The only thing she asked, as an 11 year old girl who is my destiny man, who I'm gonna be with I was like this is kind of weird.
Speaker 3:You know she was talking about her grandma, so I think maybe her grandma put that in her head that everyone has like a soulmate or you know true love, and that's what she was asking the ouija board and but her parents even knew about it.
Speaker 1:Like she was playing with the ouija board, I was like you are messing with stuff you don't understand, you know how some people are.
Speaker 3:They just don't think it's real.
Speaker 1:Yeah, white people, now chuck it uh but then she doubles down on it, like a little bit later in life I think maybe she was like a pre-teen or she goes to a fortune teller at a carnival and she does it, gets a fortune reading, and then the fortune teller tells her like I'm getting a name, damon bradley. So like she's like, oh shit, this is real. Honestly, if I was here, I was like this is something I would 100 believe it. Would you ever do one of those? I would.
Speaker 3:I see them all the time at the state fairs. I do for fun, to be honest.
Speaker 1:I would want to, but I'd be too nervous to.
Speaker 3:Too nervous yeah.
Speaker 1:This whole movie has a theme of destiny I kind of believe in if.
Speaker 3:if you know your destiny, it's not really destiny, then I don't know, I don't know, I think it was like her chasing her destiny. You know, I'm saying like it was gonna happen either way, in my opinion yeah, but do you think like just knowing that is gonna be tampering? With it?
Speaker 1:no, I don't think so yeah, I guess you're kind of right. But I want to be specific. Like when she says, like I see a name Damon Bradley she doesn't say that's the man you're going to be with and it kind of turns out to be true in the end, like that name did mean something to her towards the end, regardless if it was going to be the man she was with or not. But years the time jumps to 14 years later she's in her 20s now. She's now engaged to a foot surgeon. You know who the foot surgeon's name is. I forgot Dwayne Johnson.
Speaker 1:It is really Okay Foreshadowing she tells her friends about her engagement, and she was. Yeah, I didn't even say yes yet. First of all, she takes it out of her bag. She's not even wearing the ring. It's like, yeah, he gave me 24 hours to make up my mind. I was like what kind of marriage is this? Starting off like at.
Speaker 3:It's like she knew she didn't want to marry him. Okay, and it was like she knew she was settling for him. Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, which is kind of heartbreaking in itself. But if you're going to be doing that, you just not get married.
Speaker 3:He's a foot doctor. Oh, that's a nice ring. They could have made his job a little bit cooler, though I think the whole point was that his job was supposed to be lame. He's not her dream person.
Speaker 1:Do you think if she would have said yes immediately if he was a brain surgeon?
Speaker 3:No, Because either way he's still a nerd, or like just like.
Speaker 1:Do you think she would have said yes if you worked at footlocker?
Speaker 3:no, oh, I think it was more so she just knew she was gonna like mesh with him, like that, the way she did with, um, robert downey jr's character you're saying so, it doesn't really matter where what his occupation would have been.
Speaker 1:In my opinion, yeah, I can see them. First of all, I didn't even talk about her name. Her name is faith in this movie and, like we've been talking about destiny this whole time, like it's very on the nose, that's like that blake lyley movie that just came out last year, um the one, that's all the drama right now I can't remember what it's called. Yeah her name was lily. I think it was lily and she owns a flower shop. I think her lame was lily blossom okay, that's kind of generic very cheesy on the nose.
Speaker 1:That's exactly what this was giving me, but I didn't realize her best friend is bonnie hunt in this movie. You know, I know her from cheaper by the dozen. She was in jumanji, she was. She was good in this movie, but I'm I was picturing like who would they cast? That they remade it today too? That definitely would have been like um, amy poehler maybe or something like that. You know what I'm talking about. Somewhat fun like that, a funny character, um, and she has an engagement party, huge engagement party.
Speaker 1:It was very nice. She gets ambushed all the time about questions like you know, which is normal stuff. One of the things that stood out to me is that her future mother-in-law came up to her with a box Like it's my wedding dress. It's been in our family for two generations. I want you to wear it. Or Dwayne said you would wear it. I was like this marriage is off to an awful start.
Speaker 3:That was kind of fake of him to just say, oh, should I wear your wedding dress?
Speaker 1:Without her like first of all, like we're same dimensions, you know. But I can see maybe if it was her own daughter giving that to you. But to give it to your future daughter-in-law, that's a way to like a bad foot in the door.
Speaker 3:I don't know. I would have told her. You know straight up, I'm not wearing that, it's an ugly dress.
Speaker 1:She tried it on and it for the 90s.
Speaker 3:It looked cute, I don't know, you know what I'm saying. Like I feel like the 90s was, like it was like sleek and like more modern.
Speaker 1:No In my opinion, that's what I think of when I think of a 90s wedding. I think 90s was like bigger and bulky.
Speaker 3:Hmm, I don't know. I think, of 80s, when I think of bigger and bulky to be honest, hmm, I feel like 80 90s, just toned it down just a little bit.
Speaker 1:I don't know. We weren't even around in the 90s. Yeah, we weren't. We're never going to do that.
Speaker 3:I guess from what I picture in my head.
Speaker 1:She tries on the dress as she's trying on the dress. She's trying it on. First of all, it cracked me up how she tried it on with black boots, random as fuck. And she gets a phone call and it turns out it's a man on the phone calling to say hey, I know you don't know me, but I was a friend of Dwayne's. I couldn't make it to the wedding, just want to wish you congratulations. So, okay, what was the name? Again? And it was Damon Bradley, the guy she heard as a kid.
Speaker 1:This chick was so whipped for this guy she dropped everything, everything in life, to go to the airport to find this guy. She ran out there in her wedding dress to go meet this guy and her friends go along with her and she gets there. It's too late, it's too late and the plane's gone. So she found out where the plane's going. She books a plane onto that. Uh, it was like a rome. If they're going to r Rome, they get there. They find all these like where he's gonna stay at his hotel. You know, they really tracked this guy down. And for being in the 90s, there's no internet, there's no phone, you can google and stuff like that to travel to a foreign country. I think it's wild back in the day it is.
Speaker 3:I talk about all the time.
Speaker 1:I couldn't be a pizza delivery driver in like the 80s, because without gps.
Speaker 3:It would have been too hard, I think, but I mean, I did think it's pretty cool, though, how she, you know, no hesitation, she just booked a flight over there, and you know, and then not even being able to speak the language fully, you know things you're kind of just like but on top of that she's engaged.
Speaker 1:I think they had nine days before they're getting married. She's engaged, going to this man and at the engagement party. I think this is the last time you actually see the husband in the whole movie. He has no idea he's oh, no, um, yeah, you know the brother confronts him because, the brother's dating her best friend, her brother's dating his her best friend, and um he, he kind of figures something's going on, so he tells them and he finds out her best friend's husband has been cheating on her.
Speaker 1:But that was the last we've seen of him, I think the other guy her husband, her fiance oh, yeah, you're right, yeah, yeah yeah, we don't see any confrontation with that later or anything like that or her actually Breaking up with this guy. So, anyway, she goes to Rome and she finds out when this guy is. Long story short, there's a lot of stuff that happens in between. It's a very funny movie too. First of all, um, she finds him at this restaurant but she gets bombarded by like running into people so she kind of loses them. He's walking away. She ends up bumping, literally bumping into this guy, and she loses her shoe. Like this is like Cinderella type of story and it's Robert Downey Jr playing Evan. No, what's his name? Peter Wright, peter Wright. And it's kind of odd or funny that she's looking for mr right and his name's right you know, she bumps into him and they kind of talk a little bit.
Speaker 1:He's obviously attracted to her very first sight, like it was like love his first sight for this guy, and she tells him the whole story. I'm here looking for this guy. I can't really find him, blah blah, what's his name? She goes um damon bradley. He's like I'm damon bradley. She ends up going on this most romantic night of her life. They went to carriage rides. They looked at like um statues, you know, they went sightseeing. They were just really in love with each other for one night. Next morning she confesses to him like hey, I gotta be honest with you, I'm engaged.
Speaker 1:He's, oh shoot. Like not only I'm engaged, I'm engaged to your best, one of your friends from college, and he was like panicking, oh shit. Like, not only I'm engaged, I'm engaged to your best one of your friends from college, and he was like panicking, oh shit, like he was starting to drink a little bit, and then he's like all right, well, I got something to confess to you too. He goes. My name isn't damon bradley, and that was like a twist for me. I was like, oh shit, I didn't know, I wasn't expecting that. Okay, so, uh, my name is damon bradley too. I mean, isn't damon bradley? It's like what did I say, peter? Right, emilia, she hates him.
Speaker 3:I don't blame her oh, she freaks out because you know she spent the whole night with this dude and then turns out he's not even like who he says he is. So I mean I would be a little freaked out too. I'm not gonna lie. You have no idea who you're even laying next to at that point but she didn't even like have an idea who she's laying to before.
Speaker 3:Okay, but it was you know she was like ditzy and like in love and like you know, on her little like I don't know I don't know a little travel.
Speaker 1:I feel like you, yeah, I feel like you can't even be mad at I could be mad at her too. That's what I'm trying to say, because like I said you fell in love with this guy all you know is his name because she like 20 something years to fantasize about this man.
Speaker 3:That's where it came from or maybe no, because she's like a hopeless romantic, you know yeah so I think so you would be pretty pissed, right like if like hey, my name.
Speaker 1:My name's not robert, like I'm totally like, I'm jesse, no I think, you're crazy. That would be pretty scary, honestly, I honestly, I would leave, I would run. But you find out later why he lied.
Speaker 2:Because, like I, had this big connection with you, I fell in love with you.
Speaker 1:You're the most beautiful girl in my world. I don't want to watch you walk out my life. So, yeah, like I want to pretend it wasn't a big deal, it's just a name. I was like it's not just a name, it's a whole identity. Like you stole, which honestly, like I'm surprised he didn't like legally change his name to david bradley. Her best friend in this movie is long wickles with her to roam. She has a whole side story in this movie. She falls, she's in a loveless marriage to her brother like he finds out she's. I think she finds out she's cheating, he's cheating on her. So she ends up like falling in love with the concierge at one of these hotels and they like travel around together.
Speaker 3:I think it was more so. You know her just wanting to get back at her husband because you know she thinks he's allegedly cheating not that he is cheating per se and that guy well, he was cheating right no, he wasn't. He wasn't cheating, but she just thought he was. That guy was slimy and I'm going to be totally honest.
Speaker 1:The concierge.
Speaker 3:Yeah, didn't they meet at the jewelry store or something like that when they went looking for Damon Bradley and he wasn't there?
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 3:And I think that's where they met. So it was very clear from the jump he was there for a fun time, not a long time. I thought he was really into her no, because even at the end, um, I want to jump forward you know, um. At the end, when they're driving away, she runs out to say bye, he just speeds off doesn't even like look back at it.
Speaker 1:I didn't even really pay attention to that, I guess I must have been talking or something that sucks. I thought she was gonna to move out there and stuff like that. Would you move to Rome? Hmm, would you move to Rome?
Speaker 3:Sure, why not? It'd be nice.
Speaker 1:There'd be like a million reasons why not.
Speaker 3:Why not?
Speaker 2:I wouldn't want to move to Rome I don't know. Hmm.
Speaker 3:I like the food and you know the people and all the.
Speaker 1:It'd be cool touring stuff, but I couldn't. I don't know if I could live in any foreign country, really I think I could I'm too scared to move down the street to a different neighborhood. No, um, but keep going back to like. You know he's fine. He confesses it's not really him. She's pissed, obviously. So she wants to go back to the airport, she doesn't he? Uh, peter does not want her to leave right away. So what does he do? He goes over like, hey, I found the guy you're looking for.
Speaker 1:If you want, I'll take her to you and now he wants to be her best friend now, which is? I thought that was like pretty weird.
Speaker 3:He doesn't want to lose it, you know.
Speaker 1:I get that, but I'm surprised she gave him the time of the day after that.
Speaker 3:She's desperate.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Being honest, being desperate.
Speaker 1:And she's like he's at this hotel, I'll drive you there. So they go and this is really handsome man, like he comes out of a pool like Farrah Fawcett with her hair all wet and stuff like that. So she goes on a date with them and it kind of turns out like this guy was a little bit of a perv.
Speaker 2:He was like, not a perv was like a not a purpose, kind of a douchebag.
Speaker 1:And turns out it was peter who hired this guy. This is I'm giving away major spoilers this movie. Trust me, it's worth the watch. But peter hired this guy to pretend to be here. Right, that's this guy. She ends up finding that out and like peter, like you're just stacking everything against you at this point. So now she's had enough. She's like fuck this, I'm going back to home to get married to my mediocre husband. At the airport they do run into the actual guy and he's like even lamer than her husband. It seemed like it's hard to say because we only spent like two minutes with this guy.
Speaker 3:He is though he looks. I don't want to be mean, but he looked kind of ugly and his head was super big, like you. His hair it was like like that, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:Do you think they just picked an average guys or they purposely picked him because of those features?
Speaker 3:yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1:You know, they wanted him to have like a, you know, a specific look well, yeah, I guess you couldn't have no one handsome more handsome than robert downey jr you the male lead and also the fact that he looked like a square.
Speaker 3:You know.
Speaker 1:He did look like a square and then I mean this is there's a lot of inconvenience or stuff that happens. That's stretching reality a little bit. And I told you because you were here the last five minutes. I was watching the movie. He goes, she goes. What do you mean? He, robert Downey Jr. He goes to the airport. He's getting ready to leave the airport and she's talking to the real Damon Bradley and she goes like I think I love him or no, how do you phrase it? He asked her well, do you love him? And she goes what? And all of a sudden the airport gets loud, like there's people talking, there's intercom going and he has to repeat herself like three times she, what? What did you say? I was like come on, girl. Like what are we doing here? It's like do you love him? And she goes yeah, I think I do. I was like bitch, this has been three days.
Speaker 1:Okay, come on, it's been three days since you've known this man.
Speaker 3:He's lied to you the entire time you've known him but he, you know it was like yearning he should, you know he did. He went through all this to show her that he loved her. So at that point I would have desperate, you would have gave it no, yeah let's go like, please, he was doing the most and she just wasn't having it, you know. So, yeah, but in a good way, no I don't think that's what makes it a good rom-com is because it's like you go home with this man.
Speaker 3:Sorry, it's like the concept of like a true yearning man, like this dude was following her, like everywhere you know, setting up all these lies.
Speaker 1:Yet I lies, but like yeah, he did it out of love I get it, but go home with this man.
Speaker 3:I would never trust the word this guy says I don't know, but he seems way more interesting than some kind of weird foot doctor guy.
Speaker 1:He did he seems like a very charming man. On the carriage rides he gave a lot of cool facts about the gods and trees and stuff like that. He seemed very insightful. Then he found out he had some boring ass job as corporate insurance or something like that.
Speaker 3:He was a foot salesman, no a shoe salesman, so I don't know, but I think it was also because he even mentions the fact that he wasn't even supposed to be on that trip that was a cool.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that was a cool like monologue, because he mentioned, like you want to hear of destiny, like I wasn't supposed to be here, I wasn't supposed to be at that restaurant.
Speaker 3:You know, he felt like all that was lining up and I could see his point there yeah, so I feel like you know it was destiny for both of them, so he also feels like she was his destiny you know that he was meant to meet her, which makes sense, and I feel like that's why he tried so hard but all this like takes place in like the last literally five minutes of the movie.
Speaker 1:Like she decides she loves them and they end up together. Because I was watching it, I was like there's how's, how's, like, how are they going to end up together? There's no way. When I last seen them, they were still pissed at each other.
Speaker 3:I don't know. I think it's giving like, do you think they?
Speaker 1:rushed it. At the end it was on a mass scale.
Speaker 3:I don't think they rushed it, I think it was more so. You know, when there's so much tension between two people, then it kind of turns into something else. Yeah much I hate you, like I, you know, I don't want to be around you too, like I actually do love him or like you know.
Speaker 3:That kind of thing in my opinion, you know and even when she was getting dressed for her date, he was like handing her all the things that she was already asking for. It's like he already knew her so well, to be honest, yeah, yeah, and they do them together.
Speaker 1:At the end of the movie they go home. I think the like the last shot is the plane taking off of them down together. That's all you see. But I wanted to see the conflict resolution between her and her husband, like getting divorced or how is she gonna I could just picture it.
Speaker 3:She would call and be like hey, I'm not coming home, we're over.
Speaker 1:That's it like pretty shitty for her too yeah, but you can get over it.
Speaker 3:He's a rich doctor. You can put somebody else I.
Speaker 1:I mean, you know what would have made this movie a little bit better If the husband or fiancé was more involved, like because you never got the sense of the feeling that the husband was that deeply in love with her either, like he was probably just marrying to marry, like people get married, because that's what she's supposed to do, you know, meet somebody, get married, have kids, blah, blah, blah, and that's what he seemed like he was doing. But she wanted to marry someone for love and she always thought it was her destiny to marry this one man. But if he was genuinely interested in her, like he was in love with her too and she, that would have been more of a dilemma for me. I like to see that dilemma better for her. Then she literally has to choose between these two guys, because this one is just an easy choice, like to go with this other stranger.
Speaker 3:I think it's about passion. You know, saying she didn't have that passion for her.
Speaker 1:I know, I, I 100 agree with you, but that's what I'm saying, like I, I wish he did have passion for her I don't know, I think that's.
Speaker 3:I just think it played out perfectly in my opinion. You know, I'm saying, yeah, like we, okay, so I'm marrying this flip doctor guy. I don't really like him he's not really into me either, but we kind of act like we love each other, I guess. And then here comes this amazing dude. You know it's like magical, we're like, it's like so much romance and fun and all that. And all of a sudden you know I mean I would get it, I would go with him too. So I mean, okay, okay.
Speaker 1:And the music in this was pretty good too. It's like a lot of like not foreign music, but like more, like more different languages. I think you said the movie had one of your favorite songs right, oh, the soundtrack, the main, like soundtrack the theme.
Speaker 3:I played it over.
Speaker 1:Like the orchestra.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it was actually on my most played last year for Spotify. I'm not even going to lie. That's awesome Because it just. You know, that's what I think of when I hear that song.
Speaker 1:That's great. That's probably exactly what they were going for yeah, and it worked.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it worked. I do got some random facts. Just a couple facts here. At this point in his career, this was Robert Downey Jr's paycheck at two million dollars for this movie, and he was only 29, 29 years old. Obviously he had a big career but then he fell off a little bit shortly, like in 99, 2000, because this whole you know, drug problem, arresting it and stuff like that. But then he came back in 2008 iron man and now this guy's like a billionaire. Uh, for that one scene, the montage of the romantic night when they first met, actually robin downer juni't even come in this movie until 45 minutes in the movie, which is wild, and this movie is an hour and 45 minutes long the cast was unable to shoot at the real mouth of truth as the nearby square was the target of a terrorist bomb shortly began filming, so they had to replicate it. You know that scene where they had to stick their hand in the mouth of truth. What?
Speaker 3:was that supposed to represent? Again, I think it was a movie from Aubrey Hepburn or something I've never seen the original movie either, to be honest.
Speaker 1:But you stick your hand in this statue's mouth.
Speaker 3:Something was supposed to happen right, it's supposed to bite you, or something. I I think he was trying to get your hand bitten off or something.
Speaker 1:Because they do have that joke where they both pretend like they lost their hands. That was pretty funny At one point this movie was almost called Just In Time instead of Only you. I think I would like that title better.
Speaker 3:Just In Time. I mean it works. I can see it Because Only you there's like three guys in this movie.
Speaker 1:It's Only.
Speaker 3:You. So out of everyone that's chasing her and that wants to be with her, she's like with this one guy I think you know so damon bradley, her fiance, and then you know, peter, so only you is at the. In the end, it's only him.
Speaker 1:So I think that came with a better title thing I don't know, I think it's cute, it's cute so this movie was one of your favorite rom-coms of the year. You know I usually ask one out of ten. What would you give this movie one out of ten.
Speaker 3:I'd give it an eight Eight. That's pretty good. That's pretty high.
Speaker 1:I think I'd give it a seven out of ten. Okay, it's good I would re-watch it again. Probably not five times worth.
Speaker 3:but Okay, but.
Speaker 1:You know know what this movie did want me to go back and watch more 90s romance movies, though like robert downey jr and um marissa tomei, I checked more of them out. Now this movie, that movie came out like it was in 1994. We're gonna fast forward a little bit to 1998 now, fresh off of billy madison, happy go more adam sandler came together and made the wedding singer. I like I told you this is my hands-down more adam sandler came together and made the wedding singer. I like I told you, this is my hands-down favorite adam sandler movie all time. I think it's so funny so I would have I don't want to say the word inspiring, but like inspiring, inspiring a wedding singer.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I do. No, it's a really bad hairstyle too.
Speaker 1:I thought it was really decent in this movie. It's okay.
Speaker 1:It came out in 94, or 96, but it was set in 1985. And, man, were they pushing that down your throat this entire time? 1985, because with their music, their clothing, the way they talked, it was hilarious. This whole movie is this whole movie because we've seen this, not in 1996. I think that made it more timeless for me watching it. As you know, I think I was the first thing that pre-teen had I watched in 1996. That would have bothered me a lot more how they're trying to make it look like the 80s and I think I just couldn't get past that, but I think this movie's timeless, regardless like what time of the year, what year it is.
Speaker 1:I would have left my ass off of this whole movie. For those of you who don't know, this movie is about Robbie, a singer, and Julia, a waitress, both engaged, but to the wrong people, fortune intervenes and helps them discover each other. Same thing. This movie is about destiny kind of thing. It's actually almost the same plot You're with the wrong person, someone else comes along kind of changes his mind a little bit. This one was more mutual, where the guy didn't lie about his identity, though uh, and it stars like adam sandler, drew barrymore, christine taylor trying to find this one guy's name. Do you like this movie overall?
Speaker 3:I liked it yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, this movie is very quotable. What are some of your favorite quotes?
Speaker 3:I can't remember a quote.
Speaker 1:This is going on the list. Actually, I think it's so funny this movie opens up with. Actually, you know what we talk about Faith being her name being on the nose, like this guy's name is Robbie Hart. This is a fun fact too. Like if you ever pay attention to Adam Sandler's characters in all his movies, I believe his last name always starts with an H, and that sounds right. Yeah, I believe the last name always starts with an H, and I want to say the female lead in this movie always starts with a J, if I'm not mistaken, one of those two.
Speaker 3:I don't know. This is a conspiracy theory.
Speaker 1:That's cool, I mean.
Speaker 3:I didn't know about that, so um.
Speaker 1:Going back to the movie, the movie opens up with Adam Sandler singing, performing as a wedding singer. He's right around. He's singing Right Round by Dead or Alive. I loved it. It set the whole tone for the whole movie. It was so much fun. Adam Sandler isn't that bad of a singer. I would say he's as good a singer as Ed Sheeran. Oh no, ed Sheeran's not that good. That's kind of weird. He's not singing. If that makes sense, it's. I think his, his levels, adam suther's levels are good as that.
Speaker 3:You're in you're gonna get a lot of hate for saying that I probably will.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I probably will. Uh, robbie hart, you know some of those characters. He's a very nice, genuine guy. He teaches. He's teaching this old lady, though, how to play piano for her. I don't know if it's renewing vows or just their anniversary party, but she's so poor. She pays this guy with meatballs and one of the scenes is like oh, I rented a tub of yours, so stick out your hands. She puts two big fat meatballs in his hands and then watches him eat it. It's like what the fuck are we doing here? And he's all excited and in love because he's getting married the next day and it turns a very heartbreaking scene because he gets left at the altar.
Speaker 1:That was a very big, powerful scene for me. I was like oh shit, I can only imagine what that felt like. So the next day he's all depressed and stuff like that. His best friend is a good friend because he came and checked on him and they were laying in bed. But even though he came and checked on him and they were laying in bed, but even though he came and checked on him, he just really came like hey, now that you're single, let's go out. You know, I don't know how good of a friend that was.
Speaker 1:So he goes back to work singing but he's like singing depressed love songs. It was hilarious. He gets in a fight with his father-in-law because he was singing Love Stinks. He was insulting the guests. It was hilarious. And then he meets one of the waitresses, Julia, out there. She's getting married. They're kind of friendly. They're very friendly at first. She seems like if I get proposed to, I'll invite you and your friend to the engagement party, which they do. And the friend comes up dressed up as Michael Jackson, Like the red leather jacket, the one glove. If you could, just you seem, If you were up in that time, you seem like you would do Janet Jackson definitely.
Speaker 3:I would, why not? Yeah, I'd rock it.
Speaker 1:And you meet Julia's fiance, Glenn Glenn Guglia. What a douchebag the guy was a jerk.
Speaker 3:I mean what a douchebag. The guy was a jerk. I mean, he was a douchebag.
Speaker 1:He was a very open douchebag too, and the only reason he said he was marrying her too is because he could trust her with the money.
Speaker 3:I don't know If I'm being honest, I thought she was kind of stupid, like how can you not see this guy's like? Right you know like cheating and just kind of using you, but I don't know.
Speaker 1:There's a lot of reasons she's out there like that it was like she just couldn't see him.
Speaker 3:This guy is a total jerk. How can you not see? He's a total jerk, though uh.
Speaker 1:But Robbie leaves the wedding business and he goes to do bar mitzvahs instead. So he auctioned at one of his venues for the bar mitzvah. He notices his little fat kid sitting in the corner all alone and he's like hey man, what's going on? What's? Why are you so down? He's like why is that girl over there to dance? But she told me she does a dance with losers. So he's like all right, I got one for you.
Speaker 1:So adam sandler goes back on stage. This is probably one of my favorite scenes of the whole movie. He goes back on stage and he's like I'm here to like can I have julia come to the center of the stage? He's like I want you to pick any guy in the state in this whole place, the less the coolest guy in here, not losery guy um to have a dance with. And she picks that kid he was talking to. So he's singing. It's a very I might go over here, watch this movie just for the scene alone. He's singing and she's dancing with him. It's a very sweet moment. And the guy starts getting handsy with her. He starts grabbing her butt so that he's like just go with it, just go with it. So Robbie gets off the stage, he goes down, he picks up, like a 13 year old girl too, and he puts her hands on his butt.
Speaker 1:I was like this movie would not get made today with that stuff. And then, you know, everyone starts doing the dance like old people, like that it was. It was funny, it was a funny scene and it was a very sweet thing. He kind of he didn't mean well by it, but just executed very poorly. Then the next scene's, like a wedding montage, seemed pretty fun, very funny. You know, one of the I was gonna say this for the end, but like a fun fact about this movie this movie took years to make for the script.
Speaker 1:They couldn't figure out the script very well, so the director gave the script to carrie fisher, the princess leia from star wars, to look over the script. She took six months with it and she came back with this masterpiece that we have. Someone asked her like how, what was your um secret? Like what did you do exactly to make this movie so great? She was like I just made the woman smarter and like I'm uh, made the love scenes better. So I guess that's kind of the point of that is like it's hard for men to write for a woman not just women, but like how to write for children, or you know, it's like that, like so I think it's good to get other perspective, and she killed it in this movie. This movie was very funny, but it does have a lot of emotions in it too.
Speaker 3:I think that is true, though, with the um, with men writing women and writing women characters. You know, there's only so much you can kind of like. How do I say it? You can't really think from a woman's perspective, basically, which makes it kind of hard to like write a character. That is, how do I say someone like someone that a woman can actually relate to, in my opinion, which is why you have a lot of what do they call them? Manic pixie girls? They're always so ditzy and free and it's not like that.
Speaker 1:I'm sure that's how the original script was. Oh, okay, I've picked up where we're at. There's a whole wedding montage scene that they're doing like that, trying cakes and stuff like that, going shopping and stuff like that. It's funny moments. But then they go robbie like oh, she forgot her jacket in the back seat, so he takes her to the next day. He's there and julia's there talking with her sister, I think it is and she was talking about the first kiss at the altar. And she's like oh, show me how you're going to kiss a Munrabi. And I was like okay, I was like what the fuck is happening here? Like she was just so cool with that, so they end up kissing. And of course Glenn walks in with a CD player too.
Speaker 1:That I thought was like something like 600 bucks worth and he kind of freaks out like, oh, I just can't give her a jacket. And she kissed me, but it meant nothing though, and he runs out the next day. They have a double date the sister robbie, julia and glenn. This is where glenn confesses like he was cheating on her. Robbie was so smooth that we got to confess that too.
Speaker 1:But it's not like he can go to julia and say like, hey, this guy's cheating on you, you know, because she's never gonna believe that. I don't know, maybe she would, she just didn't want to believe it. So he kind of get I'm skipping over a lot of stuff too but he kind of gets the courage to go out, tell her how she feels. But she walks up to. He walks up to her house. He sees her in the movie, in the sorry the movie in the window, trying on her dress and like talking in the mirror. But she sees him laughing and smiling, you know, like in her dress. He doesn't realize she's fantasizing about being married to robbie oh, okay so it's kind of like you've seen roman juliet, right.
Speaker 1:It's kind of like the thing like where she takes the poison and he does. She doesn't, he doesn't realize it's fake poison, so he kills himself. It kind of reminds me of that. So he goes depressed, so she's going to go through with a wedding. She kind of runs a rush this whole thing because she's kind of upset with the whole Robbie thing. So let's go to Vegas. So then Robbie hears about this and he's like I'm going to go to Vegas and stop this wedding. So he goes first class. There was a scene where oh, I'm gonna get hate for this too with the, the person at the airport was dressed like 80s, like with his hair covering his face. It's like some similar rock star back then. I can't remember who, but that was gonna be played by chris farley.
Speaker 3:I don't know. If you remember, I didn't know who he is yet from snl.
Speaker 1:He's like one of the funniest guys in the world. Oh, he passed away. Now he passed. He couldn't do it because he was going to rehab at the time. He actually passed away like two weeks before this movie released, but he would have made a role so funny. So robbie gets on a plane, he's in first class and he's like makes friends with the entire first class like they're all listening to a story and everything like that. And then they finally realize like, oh shit, he's like they're all listening to a story and everything like that. And then they finally realize like, oh shit, he's here. They're here in the back listening to not listening, but like they're just there. So robbie gets help from billy idol the guy biggest, one of the 80s icons to like help distract him. He sings him a song and everything like that, which is on my playlist. I had that song on my playlist yeah, yeah so, long story short, they end up together.
Speaker 1:It's a romantic thing and they get married at the end too, like all their friends. Who was in the movie? I'd like that scene when you bring everybody back from the movie like, uh, the drunk brother at the one of the weddings came back, was, he was the one new wedding singer now too, and that was pretty cool. You know they released a soundtrack for this movie, but that song with a brother-in-law or not, that brother-in-law, that guy singing at the end he's not on the soundtrack. Steve will show me. And the guy who was auditioning to be julia's wedding singer I didn't talk about her name is julia gulia that's hilarious.
Speaker 3:It's a weird name.
Speaker 1:It's a weird name um, but this movie, dude, it's so good. There was a two. Uh uh, you like broadway, you like I know you like musicals. There's a musical adaptation of this in 2006 that even it was so good it won a tony. I never do that, but would you like to see this movie back, brought back to broadway?
Speaker 3:yeah, I would watch the broad version, for sure.
Speaker 1:What movies have you seen on Broadway? Or plays, sorry.
Speaker 3:Plays I saw Annie. That was a while ago. I saw the Michael Jackson musical. Mm-hmm. It was here last year in Chicago, so that was really fun to see, that's pretty much it. Everything else I just watch on TV.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I think I, and that was Jersey Boys and that was awesome. Betty White was considered for the role of Rosie. I'm going to tell you these people were considered for the role of Glenn, the shitty douchebag boyfriend fiance.
Speaker 1:Jim Carrey, christopher McDonald if you don't know who that is, it's the guy who plays Trudy McGavin in Happy Gilmore Charlie Sheen, jack Black, owen Wilson Except for McDonald. If you don't know who that is, it's the guy who plays Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore. Charlie Sheen, jack Black, owen Wilson, john Cryer and Matthew Broderick were all considered for the role of Glenn. I think any one of them actually would have killed it.
Speaker 3:Jack Black, so I don't know if I could see him as a jerk one.
Speaker 1:Have you seen Anchorman? He had a small cameo in there. He played like a jerk. He kicked a puppy off the bridge. Oh okay, I don't know, maybe that's pretty cool though.
Speaker 1:Charlie Sheen would have killed it in this role. I think, though, he would have. Yeah. People who almost played Julia Natalie Portman, jennifer Lopez, jennifer Aniston, jennifer Gardner, julia Roberts, christina Applegate, cameron Diaz, sarah Jessica Parker, brooke Shields and Pamela Anderson were all considered the role for Julia. Yeah, but this is like the first movie with him and Drew Barrymore. They had like three other movies together too. I wonder, like if they weren't in this movie together, would they have that same relationship? Now, I don't know, because I feel like it kind of created that partnership.
Speaker 3:It did.
Speaker 1:They had great chemistry in this movie. But J-Lo, that was kind of weird. I think she was like this is 95-96. They were making this movie, so she's probably fresh on with Selena and some other big movies back then.
Speaker 2:I don't like her, you don't like Janet, I do not like her, me neither.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna say Paige. This Boone movie had a great soundtrack though, too, like a lot of 80s songs which I liked. That was cool. What would you give the Wedding Singer? 1 out of 10?.
Speaker 3:I'd give it a 7 7?.
Speaker 1:I'll flip it. I'll give it an 8 out of 10. Really an 8 out of 10? Okay, I love this movie. This is a more comforting movie for me than the only one.
Speaker 3:I mean I don't explain, but no, that's pretty cool. I guess for me it's a 7 because, you know, I just wasn't that into it it was still a good movie, though.
Speaker 1:What's your favorite Adam Sandler movie?
Speaker 3:I don't really have a favorite. I mean, an Adam Sandler movie is an Adam Sandler movie, you know, it kind of has that vibe to it.
Speaker 1:You know, I would say I think that's why I like this movie. It doesn't feel like an Adam Sandler movie though I would go with Grown Ups. Grown Ups. That's a bad choice.
Speaker 3:How about? I mean yeah that makes sense.
Speaker 1:Okay, I like this movie Mostly because his name is Robbie.
Speaker 3:All right, that's cool. No, I'm joking.
Speaker 1:Happy Gilmore, it was great. I'm excited for Happy Gilmore 2 coming out this year.
Speaker 3:You keep talking about that one. I haven't seen it yet, though.
Speaker 1:You haven't seen Happy Gilmore? No, I haven't. Have you seen Billy Madison, mm-mm or management? You haven't seen any of them. We're definitely re-watching all these movies I hope you know that. Um, I know you're big into movies, so thank you so much for coming on. First of all, I had a great conversation with you to talk about these. Thanks for having me. But future movies coming out what movies are looking forward to coming out this year, or would you?
Speaker 3:like to see me the michael jackson movie for sure so that's a fun fact we can talk about that.
Speaker 1:Uh, I excited for that too, actually, and his nephew's playing him in real life and he sounds and looks just like him, I heard. So that movie was set to come out fall of this year. I'm thinking it's going to get pushed back because they have to go back and reshoot the entire third act of the movie, because I guess they mentioned a lot this man's name who was involved in a lawsuit against the allegations against Michael Jackson, and legally they can't mention him. So they have to go back and rework around it now. So I'm wondering if it's going to change, how it's going to end.
Speaker 3:It can't. It can't All right, Because you know the whole family is involved, His estate is involved.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 3:To make sure that it's like as accurate as possible. So I don't think there's no way to like to go back and, kind of like, change things. It ends how it ends.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but you can like, you can leave stuff out. I'm not saying you can't change it, but you can leave stuff out.
Speaker 3:I guess yeah, but then it wouldn't be authentic. Yeah.
Speaker 1:I love biopic movies. You know they're making a Boyz II Men one. I'm not watching that, why I've never liked Boyz II Men to be honest, if they watched Janet Jackson, would you watch that one? Maybe, who was your favorite 90s singer?
Speaker 3:90s singer Michael Jackson. Okay, okay, I mean, that's a given.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you were Michael given.
Speaker 3:yeah, you're michael jackson, more than prince yes okay, for sure, um, you know the prince and michael beef was kind of crazy.
Speaker 1:So yeah, but didn't they squash it eventually? I? Don't know to be honest yeah, it was always kind of like that friendly competition yeah, I think that's what it was, because I remember when he pat, when michael passed away, they reported prince like he didn't leave his room for like nine, nine days or something like that. Yeah, Apparently.
Speaker 3:There's a story. It sounds completely crazy. I'm sorry I'm stuttering. There's a story where Prince tried to like run over Michael Jackson in the car Really. I don't know if it's true or not, but I still want to TikTok.
Speaker 1:Well, that's in the movie. That'd be cool.
Speaker 3:Do you think Prince will cool? Well, he said boom, I'm giving you like his, someone playing him.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, probably you know a mention of it. That'd be pretty cool. Michael was first right he came out. Well, obviously he was a kid when he came out yeah, michael came out first. Prince was cool. It's hard for me to. I don't know if I had a pig.
Speaker 3:I don't see michael but prince was awesome I guess because I never grew up on prince. You know, it was always michael jackson my mom was a big print.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she's a big prince fan, so I grew up with a lot of prints too. She was earth went in fire. My dad was bgs. They were gonna make a bgs movie. I don't know what happened with that, um, but yeah, a lot of good biopics coming out. I really love bohemian rhapsody. Have you seen that one?
Speaker 3:that was a really good one yeah, rocket man was very good.
Speaker 1:I'm trying to think there's a lot of good documentaries out there, but anything else that you saw this year 2025.
Speaker 3:I know the Fantastic Four movie you've been talking about.
Speaker 1:I've been talking about. I'm looking forward to that. I'm kind of like you know, either way, it can be good or bad, but you're still going to watch it. Yeah, I know you are, the new Captain America movie is coming it. Yeah, I know you are, the new Captain America movie is coming out next week and I know you're just dying to see that. Not really Like.
Speaker 3:I'm not caught up in anything, it's a lot.
Speaker 1:It's a lot. And then you know Glenn's coming out next episode for the new Captain America and I'm excited for him to come out because he went through and watched all the mcu stuff. I don't know all the shows, I don't think actually the show besides like one or two, but he's been going through watching all the movies and he's been loving it.
Speaker 3:You have fun. You tell me how it is, you know if you like it or not, and then maybe I'll go see it if it's good okay, okay that sounds like a deal um any shows or anything like that coming out.
Speaker 1:I know you're on a big concert this year. You said you're going to a Tyler the Creator concert.
Speaker 3:That's going to be really fun. I got pit tickets so I'm going to be in the pit. Hopefully I'm not on the stage, Hopefully I don't get wrapped into any mosh pits or anything like that.
Speaker 1:Does that happen at concerts?
Speaker 3:Usually, yeah, there are mosh pits sometimes. That sounds like you're definitely going to get caught in the mash.
Speaker 1:I don't want to.
Speaker 3:It's going to be pretty cool.
Speaker 1:Hell yeah, it's a good year. It's a good year. Valentine's Day is coming up this weekend, so happy Valentine's Day everybody. Happy Valentine's Day to you, justine. You're probably going to be on this podcast sooner or later again, but thank you for coming on today.
Speaker 3:I'm happy to be here.
Speaker 1:Uh, like I said everybody, next week episode is going to be the new captain america with glenn steel, so stay tuned. Next week, everybody, save a new seat Outro Music.
